1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe right TV for an external hard drive is the one whose exact model supports the way you plan to use it: playing personal media, recording broadcasts, or both. USB playback and USB broadcast recording are separate features, so check the model’s regional specifications, supported drive format and capacity, port power, and file compatibility before buying.
Decide whether you need playback, recording, or both
For media playback, the TV reads compatible photos, music, or video files from a connected drive. For broadcast recording, the TV must explicitly support USB HDD recording and may require a designated recording port. A TV that can browse files from a USB drive does not necessarily record television to it.

Sony’s support guidance says an external HDD intended for recording should connect to the TV’s recording USB port. Port labels and recording availability vary by model and region, so consult the exact model’s manual and specifications rather than relying on the presence of a USB socket alone. Sony’s BRAVIA USB HDD compatibility guidance
Compare the specifications that determine compatibility
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Playback versus broadcast recording | Playback support does not establish recording support. Look for an explicit USB HDD recording feature and any recording-port requirement. |
| Filesystem and maximum capacity | The TV may accept only specified formats or drive sizes. Requirements can differ by model family and year. |
| Power requirements | A bus-powered drive may draw more current than the TV port supplies. Check the TV’s limit and whether the drive needs its own power source. |
| Port label, speed, and location | Recording may require a marked port, and USB speeds may differ among ports on the same TV. |
| File extensions, containers, and codecs | A supported drive filesystem does not guarantee that each video or audio file will play. |
| Country and model year | Features and supported formats can change across regional variants and generations, even within a product family. |
Understand the limits on drive format, capacity, and power
There is no single filesystem, capacity, or power rule that applies to every television. For example, LG USA’s USB connection guidance recommends FAT32 or NTFS and an external drive of up to 2 TB for the TVs covered by that guidance. It also specifies a drive rated at 5 V and 500 mA or less. These are LG’s stated requirements for that guidance, not universal limits for all TVs or all LG models. Sony’s compatibility information sets different requirements across model families, and newer models may support formats or capacities that older ones do not. Check the exact model’s documentation before formatting a drive; reformatting can erase its contents. If a drive needs more current than the TV port can provide, a separately powered drive may be necessary, subject to the TV maker’s compatibility guidance.
Use the right USB port and check its speed
Port count alone is a weak way to compare TVs. One port may be required for recording, while another may offer a different data speed. Sony’s BRAVIA 9 II / BRAVIA 7 II help guide says all USB ports support Hi-Speed USB and identifies the blue port as SuperSpeed. It also says USB hubs are unsupported in that guide. Follow the port instructions for the exact TV rather than assuming every port or hub will work for every purpose. Sony Help Guide: Playing content stored on a USB device

Check file compatibility separately from drive compatibility
A TV may recognize a drive and its filesystem yet still fail to play a particular file. Sony cautions that playback can depend on the media file, while LG notes that supported extensions and codecs vary by model. Before choosing a TV for a personal video library, check the model’s supported video and audio containers, codecs, and any relevant limits listed in its help guide. If a file is unsupported, changing the drive’s filesystem alone will not make its codec compatible.

A documented example: Sony BRAVIA 7 II K-85XR75M2
Sony’s UK specification page for the 2026-model-year K-85XR75M2 lists FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS for USB drive formatting, four HDMI inputs, and USB HDD recording marked “Yes (1Rec),” with Italy excepted. This is a model- and region-specific example, not a recommendation for every BRAVIA 7 II size or regional variant. Confirm the specification for the exact TV sold in your country. A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Choose the job: Decide whether you want to play stored media, record broadcasts, or do both.
- Find the exact regional model: Compare the full model number and country variant, not just the series name.
- Verify recording explicitly: If you need recording, confirm USB HDD recording in the model’s specifications and identify the required recording port in its manual.
- Match the drive: Check supported filesystem, maximum capacity, voltage, and current against the TV’s documentation.
- Confirm port details: Check which port to use, its speed, and whether hubs are supported.
- Check media formats: Verify the codecs and file extensions used by your video and audio library.
For instance, if your priority is recording broadcasts, a TV listing that only mentions USB media playback is not enough evidence; find an explicit recording feature and port instructions. If your priority is playing personal videos, confirm the formats used by those files as well as the drive’s filesystem and power needs.
