For everyday streaming, TV shows and occasional movies, start with a sensibly sized 4K smart TV that has the apps and connections you need. Pay extra for strong brightness and reflection handling if the room is bright, or prioritize contrast for darker viewing. A 120Hz screen and advanced gaming features are optional if you do not play games.
Choose a screen size that fits your seating distance
Measure from your usual seat to the TV before settling on a size. As a starting point, Target’s February 2026 retailer guide suggests 7–9 feet for a 55-inch TV and 8–11 feet for a 65-inch TV. These are guidelines rather than universal rules; room layout and personal preference also matter.

- 55 inches: Consider it when your seating distance is around 7–9 feet or a larger screen would dominate the room.
- 65 inches: Consider it when you sit around 8–11 feet away and have room for the wider screen.
Target describes 55–65 inches as a common everyday-TV sweet spot, but the right choice depends on your space. Avoid buying the largest screen your budget permits without checking how it will look from your seats.
Which features matter for everyday viewing?
4K resolution and smart-TV apps
4K means 3840 × 2160 pixels, according to Target’s guide. For streaming and regular television, a value-oriented 4K smart TV is a sensible place to start. Check that the streaming apps you use are available on the TV’s platform, and confirm the exact model’s specifications rather than relying on a series name alone.

HDR, brightness and contrast
HDR support is one feature Target recommends considering, but the room matters as much as the label. In a bright room, compare brightness and how well the screen handles reflections. In a darker room, black levels and contrast may have a bigger effect on movie viewing.
HDMI connections
Count the devices you expect to connect, such as a console or soundbar, and check both the number and type of HDMI inputs on the model. Target recommends at least three HDMI ports as general buying guidance; your needs may differ depending on your equipment.

Do you need 120Hz or HDMI 2.1?
Not necessarily. Target identifies a 120Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and HDMI 2.1 as features to prioritize for newer console gaming. If you mainly stream shows and watch movies, they may not justify a higher price. If gaming is a secondary use, check that the particular TV supports the features you want on the ports you will use.

Is a basic 4K TV good enough?
For many people, yes: a value-oriented 4K smart TV can cover streaming, shows and occasional movies without paying for gaming features or premium picture technologies they will not use. Samsung Canada describes its Crystal UHD U8000H as a practical everyday option, while placing Mini LED in a higher performance tier. Those descriptions explain Samsung’s product positioning; they do not establish an independent value or performance ranking.

What to check before you buy
- Measure your viewing distance and compare it with a screen size that fits your seating arrangement.
- Decide what your room demands: prioritize brightness and reflection handling in a bright space, or contrast and black levels for darker viewing.
- Check the exact model’s apps and ports against the services and devices you actually use.
- Pay for gaming features only if they matter to you. For a console, verify supported refresh rate, VRR, ALLM and HDMI 2.1 on the specific model.
