Choose a sightseeing backpack by how it fits your torso and hips when it is loaded—not by your height or the word “travel” on its label. Measure yourself against the specific model’s size chart, adjust the harness, and walk around with a realistic day’s load before deciding.
How to choose a travel backpack: start with fit
Backpack sizing depends on torso length and hip circumference, and size ranges vary by brand and model. Check the measurements and sizing chart for the exact pack rather than choosing from your overall height alone. If you are between sizes or uncertain, trying multiple sizes or getting an in-person fitting can help.

How should a backpack hip belt fit?
Position the hipbelt over the upper half of your pelvis, following Osprey’s fitting advice. It should feel snug and comfortable, without painful pressure. Shoulder straps should sit comfortably, and the pack should feel stable rather than shifting as you move. The right adjustment depends on your body and the pack.

Try the pack with your sightseeing load
A comfortable backpack for walking all day should feel comfortable with the things you will actually carry. Put a representative day’s load inside, adjust the harness, and walk with it for a while. If possible, compare more than one size or pack with the same load. A bag that feels fine empty may not feel the same once it is packed.

Choose capacity and features for your actual day
Choose enough volume for your intended sightseeing kit without assuming that bigger is better. A larger bag can encourage you to carry more than you need. The sources do not establish a universally correct capacity in liters for sightseeing, so use your own expected load rather than a universal size recommendation.

Once fit is acceptable, compare the practical details that affect your day:
- Harness adjustment: Check the hipbelt and shoulder-strap fit, and whether the model offers an adjustable torso system. Such systems can broaden the fit range, but are not included on every travel pack.
- Weight and capacity: Compare the empty weight and volume of the specific models you are considering.
- Access and organization: Consider whether the openings and pockets make it easy to reach the items you expect to use.
- Ventilation: Check the back-panel design if airflow matters to you.
- Compression and security: Consider whether the pack can be compressed when it is not full and whether you can secure it in the situations you expect to encounter.

Check airline rules against the exact packed bag
