Choose an artist whose portfolio fits the tattoo you want, then verify the studio’s current licensing or inspection status with the local authority where the work will take place. During a consultation, ask how the artist prevents contamination, what experience and training they have, what health risks and healing to expect, and what written aftercare they provide. Rules differ by location, so there is no single credential or checklist that applies everywhere.

Start with the work you want

Look for an artist with finished work in the style, scale, and placement you have in mind. If possible, ask to see healed tattoos as well as fresh work: healed examples can help you judge how the artist’s work looks after recovery. Ask how long they have been tattooing and how much experience they have with similar designs and placements. Queensland Health recommends asking about experience and requesting photographs of clients’ tattoos: Queensland Health’s questions for tattoo operators.

A strong portfolio is evidence of artistic fit, not proof of safe working practices. Assess the studio and the procedure separately.

Check local licensing and inspection status

Tattooing rules are jurisdiction-specific. Ask whether the studio or artist must be licensed or registered where the tattoo will be done, then verify the status with the relevant local authority rather than relying only on a certificate shown at the premises. Where inspection records are available, check when the site was last inspected and whether a result can be confirmed.

Location What the cited guidance says What to verify
England The UK Health Security Agency says there are no legal requirements for professional competence and no nationally recognised or accredited tattooing and body-piercing training courses. UKHSA guidance for England. Do not assume a particular qualification is a statutory competence credential; check applicable local premises rules and available records.
Queensland, Australia Queensland Health advises choosing a licensed studio and suggests asking about the operator’s infection-control competency. Queensland Health guidance. Confirm the studio’s licensing status and ask the operator about infection-control competency.
Florida, United States Florida’s Department of Health says both the tattoo artist and establishment must have a department license. Florida Department of Health tattooing information. Check the artist’s and establishment’s current licenses with the Florida Department of Health.
Texas, United States Texas DSHS says a studio must hold a current department-issued license, and licenses are site-specific. Texas DSHS tattoo and body-piercing studio information. Check the current license for the specific studio location, not just another site owned by the same business.

An artist’s portfolio, years of experience, or private training may help you judge their suitability, but these are not interchangeable with a statutory license. Requirements can change; consult the relevant authority for current local rules.

Ask how infection control works in practice

Rather than judging by décor or a clean-looking reception area, ask the artist to describe the steps taken before, during, and between clients. Public-health guidance points to observable precautions: handwashing, fresh disposable gloves, clean work surfaces, skin preparation, sterile needles and other items that penetrate skin, and appropriate cleaning or sterilisation of reusable equipment. Sterile packaging should be opened just before use.

Use the consultation to discuss health and healing

Tattooing punctures the skin. Public-health guidance identifies infection—including bloodborne viruses and bacterial or fungal infection—as a risk when infection prevention is inadequate; allergic reactions are also possible. Tell the artist about relevant allergies, skin irritation, or health conditions, and ask what risks apply to your situation. Toronto Public Health notes that artists should ask about allergies to pigments and materials such as latex or iodine.

  • Do you need to know about allergies, skin irritation, or health conditions before proceeding?
  • What complications should I understand, and what signs mean I should seek medical advice?
  • How long might healing take for this tattoo and placement?
  • What written aftercare instructions will you provide?

Queensland Health advises washing a new tattoo with clean running water and mild soap as an example of early care, but follow the specific written instructions from your artist. Toronto Public Health identifies pus, redness, swelling, or tenderness as possible signs of infection and advises seeking professional medical care for concerning symptoms. Consumer aftercare products are not a treatment for infection.

Judge the quality of the consultation and follow-up

A useful consultation should give you clear answers about the design, practical process, risks, and recovery, without pressuring you to decide before you are ready. Queensland Health puts the point plainly: “You should ask any question that allows you to be informed and comfortable with a decision about getting or not getting a tattoo.” Queensland Health.

Ask how to contact the studio with a healing concern and whether it offers aftercare support or follow-up visits. Western Australia’s guidance suggests considering studios that provide aftercare service and follow-up visits: HealthyWA tattooing and body-piercing guidance. Compare price alongside the quality of the work and support; a low quote alone does not establish that a studio is the right choice.

Questions to take to your appointment

  1. Is this studio licensed or registered with the relevant local authority, if required? When was it last inspected, and where can I verify the result?
  2. What training or infection-control competency do you have? How long have you been tattooing, and how much experience do you have with this style and placement?
  3. How do you clean the skin, work surfaces, and reusable equipment between clients? Which items are single-use?
  4. How are sterile needles and other items opened and handled?
  5. What do you do if gloves touch a non-clean surface or the procedure is interrupted?
  6. What risks, healing time, and aftercare should I expect, and will you provide the instructions in writing?
  7. What allergies, skin irritation, or health conditions should I tell you about before the appointment?
  8. Who should I contact if I have a concern while the tattoo is healing?

These questions draw on consumer guidance from Queensland Health, Toronto Public Health, and local authorities; adapt the licensing questions to the rules where the studio is located.
