Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a survival horror game by deciding what you want to do when danger appears: fight it, hide and evade it, or explore an unsettling world where combat is only one part of the tension. Then check the game’s camera, separate combat and puzzle difficulty, platform, and accessibility options in the exact edition you plan to play. Those details vary by title; no single game or perspective suits everyone.
Which survival horror game should I play?
Start with the threat relationship you find compelling, not a broad label such as “scary” or “hard.” Survival horror can make a tense encounter about aiming and resource decisions, avoiding a creature that responds to your actions, or piecing together a disturbing place between occasional fights.

- Choose combat-focused tension if you want to plan encounters, use weapons, and manage pressure during fights.
- Choose stealth and evasion if the appeal is feeling vulnerable and adapting while a threat is nearby.
- Choose a blend if you want exploration and atmosphere alongside combat that does not make the protagonist feel like an action hero.
For a concrete evasion example, Steam describes Amnesia: The Bunker as a first-person horror game with an ever-present threat that reacts to movement and sound. Its listing also identifies stealth, resource management, and exploration. That is a useful fit to investigate if you want tension built around avoiding danger and adapting, rather than assuming every survival horror game centers on frequent fights.

It also includes modernized combat. These elements can coexist: combat does not necessarily make a horror protagonist feel powerful.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
Do I want a horror game with combat or one where I hide?
Ask what you want most encounters to make you consider. In a combat-oriented game, the tension may come from how to approach a fight. In a stealth-oriented game, it may come from whether to move, make noise, or risk drawing attention. A mixed game can alternate between both, but the balance matters: a few desperate fights feel different from repeated tactical encounters.
Do not assume a genre label tells you the frequency of combat, how much control you have in a fight, or whether threats can be avoided. Look for official descriptions of the specific game and consider whether its advertised mechanics match your preferred moment-to-moment decisions. For instance, the reactive threat described on the Amnesia: The Bunker Steam listing signals a different kind of pressure from the combat and exploration described for Silent Hill 2.

Are survival horror games too hard?
“Hard” can mean several different things: surviving fights, solving puzzles, handling restrictive controls, or facing a challenge mode with little room for error. Check these dimensions separately, and confirm them for the platform and edition you intend to play.
Combat and puzzle difficulty may behave differently
For the PS5 version of the Silent Hill 2 remake, PlayStation lists adjustable difficulty and assists. Konami’s support guidance says combat difficulty can be changed later in Settings, but puzzle difficulty affects game content and cannot be changed during a playthrough. If puzzles are your concern, choose that setting with more care than a combat setting you can revisit.
Rank #3
- Solve a Deadly Mystery: What begins as a small-town murder investigation rapidly spirals into a nightmare journey. Uncover the source of the supernatural darkness in this psychological horror story filled with intense suspense and unexpected twists.
- Play As Two Characters: Experience both Alan Wake’s and Saga Anderson’s stories and see events unfold from different perspectives. Switch between Anderson’s life-or-death race to solve the case and Wake’s desperate attempts to rewrite his reality to escape the depths of the Dark Place.
- Explore Two Worlds: Experience two beautiful yet terrifying worlds, each with its own rich cast of characters and deadly threats. Discover majestic landscapes of Cauldron Lake in the Pacific Northwest and the idyllic towns of Bright Falls and Watery. Contrasting sharply, attempt to escape the nightmarish cityscape of the Dark Place.
- Survive With Light: With limited resources, take on powerful supernatural enemies in desperate close-combat situations. It takes more than just a gun to survive: light is the ultimate weapon in the fight against the darkness and will be your refuge when enemies threaten to overwhelm you.
- The physical version of Alan Wake 2 Deluxe Edition includes the following: ● Alan Wake 2 physical game. ● The Night Springs and Lake House expansions. ● Deluxe Edition cosmetics and items: Nordic Shotgun Skin for Saga, Crimson Windbreaker for Saga, Celebrity Suit for Alan, Parliament Shotgun Skin for Alan, and Lantern Charm for Saga. ● Alan Wake Remastered (Digital Edition - included as a gift with purchase DLC on a voucher).
Check whether a game offers a challenge mode
EA’s Dead Space gameplay settings page documents selectable difficulty and an Impossible challenge mode. Treat a named challenge mode as distinct from the ordinary difficulty choices; confirm the available modes and their rules for your version before choosing.
Does camera perspective matter?
Yes, if you have a strong preference about how you want to see and navigate a game. First-person and over-the-shoulder presentation are different ways to experience the same broad genre, but neither is inherently scarier or easier for every player.
Rank #4
- Cosmic horror that makes you question what's real and what's not; the line between reality and alternate worlds begins to blur.
- True survival horror: scavenge for weapons and supplies in limited quantities and run/hide to survive by any means necessary.
- Examine crime scenes and piece together clues and evidence in order to solve a series of gruesome murders.
- Explore a realistic and gritty apartment building and discover hidden areas and pathways in your search for the truth. Diverse AI: fight or hide against entities that are unpredictable and use your environment to create distractions.
- Gruesome horror around every corner and an unending feeling of tension and helplessness as you explore deeper into the complex.
- First-person: Steam identifies Amnesia: The Bunker as first-person.
- Over-the-shoulder: PlayStation describes the Silent Hill 2 remake this way.
Use those descriptions as practical comparison points, not promises about how frightening or comfortable a perspective will feel to you.

What should I check before choosing a game or edition?
Store pages and settings can differ across platforms and editions. Before buying or starting, verify the product page for the exact version you plan to use.
Best Value
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
- Platform and edition: Confirm the game is available for your system and that details you rely on apply to that version.
- Controls and comfort: Look for remapping, stick sensitivity or inversion, and options for simplifying quick-time events if those matter to you.
- Assists and reminders: Check for control or tutorial reminders and whether the game can be paused.
- Difficulty settings: Find out whether combat and puzzle difficulty are separate, and whether either can be changed after starting.
The PS5 product listing for Silent Hill 2 lists remapping, stick sensitivity and inversion, simplified quick-time events, control and tutorial reminders, and game pausing. These are listed for that PS5 product; do not assume the same options are present in another port.
How do I pick a first game in a long-running series?
You do not need to choose the entry that fans call the definitive one. Start with the kind of experience you want—combat, evasion, atmosphere, or a mix—then use an official series guide to narrow down an entry that matches.
Capcom’s Resident Evil: Where to Play, published October 18, 2024, is explicitly intended to help players choose a first or next Resident Evil game. Treat it as a starting point for exploring the series, then check the chosen game’s platform and options against your preferences.
Quick Recap

- Compare combat difficulty, puzzle difficulty, and assists as separate settings.
- Confirm first-person or over-the-shoulder presentation suits your preference.
- Verify platform and accessibility details for the exact edition you will play.
- If you are choosing a series entry, use its publisher’s guide to identify candidates, then compare their actual mechanics and settings.
