For a camping chair that fits a heavier person, look beyond its advertised weight capacity: compare seat width and depth, seat height, back height, and folded size too. ALPS Mountaineering lists its Camp Chair at 425 lb capacity, with a 19-inch-wide, 16-inch-deep seat, but those specifications are not an independent test or proof that the chair will suit every body type.
How to assess fit beyond weight capacity
A capacity figure tells you the maximum load stated by the maker or retailer; it does not tell you whether the chair’s seat will feel roomy, whether its height will suit your legs, or whether the back and arms will feel supportive. Match the dimensions to your body and preferred sitting position, and treat comfort descriptions as design details rather than guarantees.

- Seat width and depth: Check usable space against how you like to sit, including whether you need room to shift position.
- Seat height: Consider how easily you can sit down and stand up from the chair.
- Back and arm design: A taller back or padded arms may be useful features, but they do not establish an ergonomic fit for everyone.
- Transport: Compare the chair’s weight and folded dimensions with the way you plan to carry and store it.
ALPS Mountaineering Camp Chair: published specifications
ALPS Mountaineering lists the Camp Chair with a 425 lb capacity, a 19-inch seat width, a 16-inch seat depth, a 17.5-inch seat height, and a 19.5-inch backrest height. Its product page gives a chair weight of 11 lb and folded dimensions of 30 x 23 x 6.5 inches. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent load-test results. The manufacturer describes a Pro-Tec engineered aluminum frame with steel tubes and connectors, 600D polyester fabric, padded curved armrests, and a cup holder/pocket. It also highlights the taller back. REI likewise notes the taller back and describes a padded seat. These features may matter to your preferences, but neither the feature list nor the published measurements can guarantee comfort or support for an individual. Balance capacity against portability
At 11 lb, with a folded size of 30 x 23 x 6.5 inches, this chair may be less convenient if you need to carry it far or fit it into a small storage space. Check those measurements against your vehicle, gear storage, and route from parking to campsite. A high stated capacity is only one part of choosing a chair you can realistically bring along.
What the available rating does—and does not—show
REI’s listing for a former version shows 4.2 out of 5 from 30 reviews, but identifies that version as unavailable and points to a newer one. That rating should not be treated as the current newer model’s score, or as evidence that this is the best-rated chair across the market. The available information supports comparing the chair’s stated specifications, not declaring a category winner.

A practical pre-purchase check
- Confirm the exact model and read its current capacity statement from the manufacturer or retailer.
- Compare seat width, seat depth, and seat height with the fit you want; do not assume capacity alone predicts fit.
- Review back height, armrests, and padding as features to evaluate against your own comfort preferences.
- Check chair weight and folded measurements against your carrying and storage needs.
- When comparing ratings, make sure the listings refer to the same model version and show comparable review counts and dates.
