How to Choose a Streaming Stick as Fire TV Moves to Vega OS

Choose a streaming stick by checking its exact operating system and whether your must-have apps are available for that model—not by relying on the “Fire TV Stick” name. Amazon now sells Fire TV sticks on both Vega OS and Fire OS, and the two platforms do not have the same Android-app compatibility. If you rely on sideloaded apps, verify support before buying a Vega OS model.

Start with the operating system, not the Fire TV brand

Fire TV is a product family, not a single operating system. Amazon’s developer documentation describes Fire OS as a fork of Android and identifies the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Plus as Fire OS 8 / Android Level 30. The same table lists the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Select as Vega OS 1.1. Amazon’s Fire OS overview says Android apps are likely to run on Fire OS devices; that description does not establish Android compatibility for Vega OS.

Amazon’s developer portal also lists a 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) and identifies the 4K Select and Fire TV Stick HD separately as Vega OS devices. Check the model’s official product listing in your country, because similar names can conceal different software and specifications. Amazon’s Fire TV device specifications are a useful starting point.

Will your apps work—and can you sideload?

Make a short list of the services and apps you actually use, then verify each one in the official store for the exact model and sales region. The sources available do not establish a complete, current app-by-app comparison across Vega OS, Fire OS and Roku, so no platform should be assumed to include every service you want.

Amazon’s move to Vega OS changes the sideloading question. Ars Technica reports Amazon’s statement that newly released Fire TV Sticks will not support installing Android apps or other software from outside Amazon’s official app store. An APK that works on a Fire OS device should not be assumed to work on a Vega OS stick. If an app is essential and you cannot confirm it in the official store, choose a model only after resolving that uncertainty.

The 2026 Amazon listing’s TV-USB power feature may simplify installation, but check your television’s USB power capability and the product’s regional instructions before relying on it. HDR formats also matter only if your TV supports them and the content you watch is available in that format. Amazon’s published specifications list HDR10+ for the 2026 4K stick; Tom’s Guide notes Dolby Vision on the Roku Streaming Stick 4K. Tom’s Guide’s streaming-device coverage names Roku Streaming Stick Plus and Streaming Stick 4K as alternatives to consider.

Use this decision path

  1. Write down your must-have apps. Check each service against the official store for the precise stick and your country. Do this before comparing convenience features.
  2. Decide whether sideloading is essential. If you install Android apps outside Amazon’s store, do not choose a new Vega OS stick on the assumption that Fire OS compatibility carries over.
  3. Match picture features to your TV. Confirm resolution and the specific HDR formats you need, such as HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, on the model’s current official listing.
  4. Check installation requirements. Compare Wi-Fi capability and power options, including whether your TV can supply power through USB if you plan to use that setup.
  5. Choose the ecosystem you want to use. Compare Amazon’s Fire TV environment with Roku’s, but treat interface preference separately from verifiable app and hardware support.
  6. Check current local listings. Confirm exact generation, availability, specifications and price in your country; product names and lineups can change.

Do not confuse the interface update with the OS change

Amazon says its Fire TV interface redesign began rolling out in February 2026 and was available worldwide on current-generation Fire TV Stick devices as of its June 22, 2026 update. That interface rollout is distinct from the shift of some new sticks to Vega OS: a redesigned screen does not establish which operating system or apps a particular model supports. Amazon also reported speed gains of up to 20–30% in some cases on devices customers already own; this is Amazon’s claim about the interface update, not an independent comparative test. Amazon’s Fire TV redesign announcement describes the rollout.

How to treat the speed claims

For the newly announced Fire TV Stick 4K, Android Central reported Amazon’s claims of 35% faster app launches and content starting up to 20% faster. Those figures are manufacturer claims, not independently verified comparisons, and should not outweigh app compatibility or the features your TV supports. Android Central’s report on the new Fire TV Stick 4K attributes the figures to Amazon.
