A dollar peg is not automatically safer or more useful than a euro or other non-dollar peg. A stablecoin targets a reference asset; it does not guarantee that the market price will always equal that target.
The practical choice is therefore a risk-and-use-case decision, not a contest for the “safest” ticker. The checklist below shows how to compare dollar-referenced and non-dollar options without confusing a stated peg with a promise of cash-like stability.

What a stablecoin actually promises
A stablecoin is designed to track a reference asset such as a fiat currency, commodity, or basket. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes both reserve-backed and non-reserve mechanisms. Those designs can produce different risks, and a token’s secondary-market price can move away from the price at which an eligible holder may redeem it.

- Reference value: the currency or asset the project says it targets, such as one U.S. dollar or one euro.
- Redemption value: the amount the issuer or another designated party will pay under its terms, and who is allowed to use that route.
- Market value: the price available on an exchange or payment venue at a particular moment.
Arbitrage by direct minters and redeemers can pull a market price toward a redemption price, but ordinary holders may not have direct access to that process. A token can therefore trade above or below its reference even when the issuer continues to quote a one-to-one redemption value for eligible customers.

Common stabilization designs
| Design | How it seeks stability | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Reserve-backed | Assets are held to support issuance and redemption. | What assets are held, who controls them, how liquid are they, and what legal claim does a holder have? |
| Crypto-collateralized | Other digital assets support the token, often with over-collateralization. | How large can collateral losses be, how are liquidations handled, and what happens during a market shock? |
| Algorithmic or supply-adjusting | Rules change supply or incentives rather than relying solely on conventional reserves. | What assumptions keep the market coordinated, and what breaks if confidence or liquidity disappears? |
| Commodity- or basket-referenced | The target is a commodity or group of assets rather than one fiat unit. | Does the reference match your expenses, and how are valuation and redemption determined? |
The SEC’s descriptions explain the broad categories, but they do not certify any particular token. Treat the mechanism as a starting point for diligence, not as a safety rating.
Start with the currency you are exposed to
List the currency of your near-term expenses, debts, payroll, taxes, and settlement obligations. A person who pays contractors in euros may reduce exchange-rate mismatch by holding a euro-referenced token; someone invoicing and settling in U.S. dollars may prefer a dollar reference. This is a matching decision, not investment advice and not a claim that one currency is safer.
When a dollar reference fits
- Your liabilities, invoices, accounting records, or trading pairs are primarily in U.S. dollars.
- The payment venues and counterparties you use have deeper dollar-token liquidity than local-currency alternatives.
- Your jurisdiction and service providers actually permit access to the relevant dollar-referenced asset.
When a non-dollar reference can help
- Your spending and savings are mainly in euros or another supported currency, so a dollar token would add an avoidable conversion step.
- You need to settle with a counterparty that prices contracts in a non-dollar unit.
- You want to reduce the day-to-day mismatch between your digital balance and your household or business budget.
A non-dollar peg does not remove issuer, reserve, liquidity, custody, legal, or blockchain risks. It only changes the reference currency. Exchange-rate risk can also run in the opposite direction: if your expenses are in dollars, a euro-referenced token will fluctuate in dollar terms even if it tracks the euro successfully.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the same comparison sheet for every candidate
Once you know the currency you need, compare at least two candidates using identical questions. Record the answers and the date checked; disclosures, network support, and local availability can change.
| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Currency fit | Reference currency or basket, and how closely it matches your obligations. | A perfect peg to the wrong currency still leaves you with conversion risk. |
| Stabilization method | Reserve-backed, crypto-collateralized, algorithmic, or another design. | Failure modes differ when collateral falls, liquidity dries up, or confidence changes. |
| Reserve quality | Asset types, maturity, liquidity, custody, concentration, and disclosure frequency. | Assets that cannot be sold quickly may not support timely redemption in stress. |
| Assurance level | Issuer report, independent attestation, or full financial-statement audit. | These documents provide different scopes of assurance; they are not interchangeable. |
| Redemption rights | Eligible users, minimum amounts, fees, timing, identity checks, suspension clauses, and settlement currency. | Direct redemption is different from selling to another trader. |
| Secondary liquidity | Order-book depth, spreads, trading pairs, payment rails, and local on/off-ramps. | You may need to exit through the market rather than the issuer. |
| Jurisdiction | Whether the issuer and your exchange or custodian serve your country and under what rules. | International recommendations do not replace local law or contract terms. |
| Network support | Exact token contract and blockchain on the service you intend to use. | The same brand of token can exist on multiple networks that are not interchangeable for transfers. |
| Total cost | Network fees, trading spreads, withdrawal charges, conversion fees, and any intermediary charge. | A low headline fee can be outweighed by a costly network or thin market. |
| Remuneration | Whether advertised yield comes from lending, exchange activity, or another arrangement. | Yield is a separate counterparty and activity risk, not a property of the peg. |
Dollar-pegged and non-dollar options: the real trade-offs
Liquidity and availability
Dollar-referenced tokens often have more trading pairs and payment integrations, but the relevant question is liquidity on the venues you can legally use. A globally popular token may still be hard to convert in your country or on your preferred network. A non-dollar token can be operationally better if it is the asset your local exchange, payroll provider, or merchant actually accepts.
Currency mismatch
Holding a dollar token while your budget is in euros creates a foreign-exchange position. Holding a euro token while your obligations are in dollars creates the reverse. Neither is automatically wrong; the right choice depends on when and where you will spend or settle.
Issuer and reserve concentration
Using several tokens does not automatically diversify risk if they rely on the same issuer, banking partners, reserve custodian, or blockchain infrastructure. Map those dependencies rather than counting tickers.

Price behavior during stress
In a stressed market, a token can trade below its reference because holders rush to sell, market makers withdraw, redemption queues form, or the reserve assets become costly to convert. A token can also trade above its reference when demand for immediate settlement exceeds available supply. A stated one-unit target is not a guarantee of an unbroken one-unit market price.
Inspect reserves without mistaking disclosure for a guarantee
Read the issuer’s current reserve breakdown and note the “as of” date. Do not call reserves “cash” unless the current breakdown supports that description. Identify whether assets are bank deposits, short-duration government instruments, other securities, crypto collateral, or a mixture, and look for maturity, liquidity, custody, and concentration information.
Then identify the assurance document. An issuer’s transparency report, an independent attestation, and a full audit answer different questions. An attestation may test a balance at a point in time; an audit generally covers a broader set of financial statements and controls. Neither document by itself proves that every holder can redeem instantly in every jurisdiction.
BIS research on stablecoin runs finds that transparency interacts with beliefs about reserve quality and the cost of converting assets. Volatile collateral may fail to support par convertibility after a large negative shock. These are mechanism findings and case-study analysis, not a live solvency assessment of a particular issuer.
Check the legal route from token to fiat
Find the exact redemption terms before you buy. Answer these questions from the issuer’s current agreement:
- Who may redeem directly: every verified holder, only institutions, approved intermediaries, or another defined group?
- What minimum amount, identity checks, fees, banking arrangements, and settlement times apply?
- Is redemption at par into the reference fiat, or is another conversion formula used?
- Can the issuer pause, reject, or delay redemptions under sanctions, compliance, banking, or force-majeure clauses?
- What legal claim does a holder have against the issuer or the reserve assets if the issuer fails?
The Financial Stability Board’s 2023 recommendations call for a robust legal claim, timely redemption, and, for single-fiat-referenced arrangements, redemption at par into fiat. Those are recommendations to authorities, not proof that every token already provides those protections.
Also separate an issuer redemption from an exchange sale. An exchange sale depends on another buyer, available liquidity, fees, and the venue’s continued operation. It can produce a different price from the issuer’s stated redemption value.

Account for regulation and geography
The BIS notes that “stablecoin” has no universally agreed legal or regulatory definition and that the label itself does not imply stability. The rules governing issuance, marketing, custody, tax treatment, and redemption differ by jurisdiction and can change.
The SEC’s April 2025 statement addresses a specific category of U.S.-dollar stablecoins under the facts described in that statement and reflects a Division staff view. It should not be generalized into a universal legal conclusion for every stablecoin, holder, or country. Check your local regulator, the issuer’s eligibility rules, and the terms of your exchange or payment provider.
Verify the exact blockchain and custody path
“The token is supported” is incomplete. Confirm the token contract and network together. A wallet or exchange may support one representation while not supporting another, even when the symbols look identical.
- Copy the deposit network shown by the receiving service.
- Compare it with the withdrawal network and the token contract you control.
- Check whether fees are paid in the network’s native asset.
- Send a small test amount before a large transfer.
- Keep the transaction ID and verify final settlement on the relevant block explorer or service record.
Sending an asset over an unsupported network can make it inaccessible. Manufacturer compatibility lists from Ledger and Trezor show why model, token, contract, and network details must be checked immediately before use; support can change.
Keep yield separate from stability
If a platform advertises a return on a stablecoin balance, determine what creates that return. It may be lending, market making, exchange remuneration, or another activity rather than an interest payment guaranteed by the issuer. BIS analysis notes that centralized-exchange remuneration can be linked to reserve returns or market activity and can have different volatility.

A practical selection procedure
- Write the liability currency. Record the currency and timing of the payment, savings goal, or settlement you are trying to cover.
- Define the holding period. Separate a minutes-long transfer from a months-long balance; liquidity and custody needs differ.
- List eligible candidates. Include only tokens and services available in your jurisdiction and on the networks you can use.
- Read the mechanism description. Note the collateral, supply rules, and stated stabilization process.
- Capture current reserve evidence. Save the issuer’s reserve page, reporting date, and assurance type; do not reuse an old snapshot as current.
- Map redemption. Write down who can redeem, minimums, fees, timing, banking route, and suspension conditions.
- Test real liquidity. Check the actual trading pairs, spreads, withdrawal limits, and local conversion path you would use.
- Confirm network compatibility. Match the exact contract and blockchain across your wallet, exchange, and recipient.
- Price every step. Add spread, network fee, withdrawal fee, conversion charge, and any custody or intermediary cost.
- Set a failure plan. Decide in advance what you will do if the token trades off-peg, withdrawals pause, or your preferred venue becomes unavailable.
What to do when the peg does not behave as expected
The token trades below the reference
First determine whether the move is a temporary market spread or a broader redemption and liquidity problem. Check official service notices, redemption status, order-book depth, and your eligibility. Do not assume that a discount is automatically a bargain; it may price in delayed redemption, impaired reserves, or restricted access.

The token trades above the reference
Premiums can reflect urgent demand or a shortage of supply on a particular venue. Buying at a premium creates an immediate risk that the price returns toward the reference. Confirm whether you can obtain and transfer the asset through another venue before paying more than the target value.
A withdrawal is rejected
Recheck network, contract, minimum amount, address format, compliance status, and whether the service has paused withdrawals. Do not repeatedly resend funds until the receiving service confirms the supported route.
Direct redemption is unavailable
Confirm whether you are outside the eligible category or below the minimum. If you must sell on a secondary market, treat the resulting price, spread, and counterparty exposure as a different transaction from issuer redemption.
Self-custody is optional, not a stability fix
A hardware wallet can keep private keys in a dedicated device, but it cannot improve an issuer’s reserves, create a redemption right, prevent a depeg, or override local restrictions. Ledger states that its app supports major stablecoins including USDT and USDC and that keys remain in the device’s Secure Element. Trezor publishes token-and-network compatibility details. These are manufacturer statements, and support can change.
If you choose self-custody, verify the exact model, token contract, and network in the manufacturer’s current documentation; protect the recovery phrase offline; and perform a small test transfer. Custody security and stablecoin stability are separate risk layers.
Worked decision examples
A euro-based freelancer paid by euro clients
The starting candidate is a euro-referenced token because it reduces the need to convert every invoice into dollars. The freelancer should still compare reserve disclosure, direct-redemption eligibility, local exchange access, fees, and network support. If the euro token has very thin liquidity and the client can pay only in a widely supported dollar token, the operational cost of the “better-matched” peg may outweigh its currency benefit.
Recommended Free Tools
A business settling U.S.-dollar invoices
A dollar-referenced token may reduce conversion steps. The business should verify banking access for redemption, accounting and tax treatment, withdrawal limits, and a backup venue. A dollar reference does not remove issuer, reserve, legal, or blockchain exposure.
A traveler holding funds temporarily
The traveler should prioritize the currency accepted at the destination, reliable local off-ramps, and a network with predictable fees. Holding a token that cannot be converted locally defeats the purpose of the peg, even if its reserve disclosures are extensive.
Decision rule
Select the token whose reference currency matches your obligation and whose issuer, reserves, legal redemption route, liquidity, jurisdiction, network, and custody path you can independently verify. If a candidate fails a critical check—especially direct access, legal eligibility, reserve clarity, or network compatibility—choose another route or keep the funds in a conventional account. No dollar or non-dollar label can substitute for that evidence.
