Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a specialty coatings supplier by starting with the exact substrate, end use, production process, performance targets, and destination market—not by comparing broad brand claims. Then assess whether each candidate can provide grade-specific documentation, relevant test evidence, application support, quality and change controls, regulatory documentation, and a workable supply plan. A coating that performs on one substrate or production line may not work on another, so qualification should reflect the construction and conditions where it will actually be used.
What should you define before comparing suppliers?
Write a short application specification before requesting recommendations. This gives every supplier the same problem to solve and makes their proposals easier to compare. Include:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Substrate and construction: identify the material, its surface or finish, and—where relevant—the complete layered structure, including inks and other coatings.
- End use and service conditions: describe what the coated product must do, the environment it will encounter, and how long or how often it must perform.
- Production process: document the application method, equipment, line speed or production scale, and available drying or curing conditions.
- Performance targets: specify measurable requirements such as adhesion, abrasion resistance, chemical or moisture resistance, friction, barrier performance, or appearance.
- Markets and restrictions: name the destination jurisdictions and any relevant food-contact, emissions, restricted-substance, or other regulatory requirements.
- Operational constraints: note storage conditions, handling requirements, acceptable process windows, and any limits on changes to the existing line or product.
Ask suppliers to identify the exact grade they recommend, the assumptions behind the recommendation, and any conditions that could change the fit. A recommendation that does not specify its intended substrate and process is difficult to qualify.
How do you compare supplier evidence?
Use one scorecard for all candidates. Evaluate the evidence against your specification rather than treating a general product description or a supplier’s broad capability statement as proof of fit.

| Area to assess | Evidence to request | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|
| Application fit | Grade-specific technical data sheet (TDS), application guidance, and written confirmation of the intended substrate, method, and process assumptions | Whether the proposed material and operating window appear compatible with your use |
| Performance | Relevant test methods and results, plus a proposed trial plan for your substrate or construction | Whether the required properties have been demonstrated under conditions meaningful to your product |
| Safety and handling | Grade-specific safety data sheet (SDS), storage conditions, shelf life, and handling guidance | How the material should be managed at receipt, in storage, and during application |
| Compliance | Current declarations or other regulatory documents that identify the applicable jurisdiction and intended use | Whether the documentation covers the market and application you are evaluating |
| Quality and control | Lot documentation, certificate-of-analysis (COA) expectations, traceability, nonconformance procedures, and change-notification practices | How consistency, deviations, and material changes will be managed |
| Technical service | Named support for testing, application trials, troubleshooting, and scale-up | Whether assistance is available when moving from a recommendation to production |
| Supply continuity | Information about regional supply, capacity, lead-time resilience, and contingency planning | Whether the supply arrangement suits your operational risk and production needs |
Ask each candidate to state what it has tested, which method it used, the substrate or construction involved, and the conditions of the test. If evidence comes from a different construction or process, treat it as a useful starting point—not as a substitute for application-specific validation.
How should you qualify a coatings supplier?
Agree on the qualification plan before committing to a production trial. Define both the test conditions and the pass criteria in advance so that the result is not left to subjective interpretation.
- Confirm the proposed grade and scope. Review the supplier’s written recommendation against your substrate, end use, application method, process window, and destination market.
- Review current documents. Collect the relevant TDS, SDS, application guidance, and regulatory documentation. Confirm that each document applies to the specific grade and intended use, and check its revision date.
- Agree on the test plan. Select performance tests that correspond to the product’s actual requirements. Set the sampling approach, test conditions, acceptance limits, and responsibility for testing before work begins.
- Run a representative trial. Use the intended material construction and production conditions as closely as practicable. Record application settings and any deviations that could affect the outcome.
- Assess the result against the agreed criteria. Separate measured outcomes from observations, investigate failures or process instability, and document any changes required before a repeat trial.
- Set the supply and quality controls. Agree what lot information and COA data will accompany deliveries, how nonconforming material will be handled, and how changes will be notified and assessed.
Do not rely on a single successful laboratory result if the production process, substrate, or end-use conditions differ materially from the test. The purpose of qualification is to establish a defensible fit for the actual application, not simply to approve a sample.

What is different about packaging coatings?
Packaging performance can depend on the complete package structure and production line, not just the coating in isolation. Arctic Materials’ packaging-coatings information specifically notes that seal strength, release force, coefficient of friction, and barrier results depend on the construction and should be confirmed for the substrate, ink system, and line conditions.
For properties that matter to your package, set up trials on the intended construction and assess the relevant functions—such as sealing, release, friction, or barrier performance—under representative line conditions. Request the supplier’s application method, coat-weight window, drying or curing schedule, storage guidance, and shelf-life information for the proposed grade.
Regulatory suitability must be confirmed for the exact use and destination market. Arctic Materials states that its coatings are not offered for direct food contact; packaging relevance alone therefore does not establish direct-food-contact suitability. PPG describes regulatory support for packaging requirements, while Sherwin-Williams describes its Safety by Design development process as screening materials for regulatory and environmental compliance alongside package and application performance. Treat these descriptions as accounts of supplier capabilities, then request the specific documents and test evidence that apply to your package.

What should industrial buyers test?
Translate terms such as “durable” or “protective” into measurable service requirements. Depending on the application, this may include adhesion, chemical or moisture resistance, thermal limits, mechanical strength, abrasion or wear, or friction behavior. Choose test methods that reflect the substrate and the conditions the finished product will face.
ELANTAS describes technical support, application trials, and customer-specific testing for industrial coating properties including adhesion, thermal resistance, mechanical strength, and chemical durability. Ask a supplier to explain which of its test results apply to your use and what testing it can perform on your actual substrate. Agree on trial conditions and acceptance criteria before testing rather than deciding after results are available.
Make ongoing quality controls part of supplier qualification, not a separate afterthought. PPG’s Global Supplier Quality Manual – PPG Industrial Segment, Version 2 revised September 2024, covers topics including supplier qualification, incoming quality, special testing, lot documentation, shelf-life information, traceability, change management, risk management, and nonconformance procedures. The manual says printed copies are uncontrolled; verify the current controlled issue before adopting its specific requirements.

How do you evaluate suppliers for leather applications?
Start by specifying the leather type and finish, the finishing and application process, the target appearance and hand, the durability properties required, and any chemical restrictions. Ask for evidence from trials on leather and finishing conditions that match your own; results on a different substrate or finish may not transfer.
Zschimmer & Schwarz’s industrial-specialties catalog identifies leather-industry specialty chemicals and surface-treatment offerings across several substrate classes. That catalog information does not, by itself, establish that a particular coating is suitable for a specific leather type, finish, or process. Request the exact grade recommendation, relevant performance data, and application-specific trial evidence before selecting a supplier.

- Which exact grade do you recommend for this substrate and end use, and what assumptions does that recommendation make?
- Which tests demonstrate the required properties, which methods were used, and can you test our substrate or complete package construction?
- Which current TDS, SDS, and compliance documents apply to this grade, intended use, and destination market?
- What application method, process window, drying or curing conditions, storage conditions, and shelf life are specified?
- What lot documentation and COA parameters are available, and how are traceability, nonconformances, and material changes handled?
- What trial plan and measurable acceptance criteria do you propose for qualification?
- How will you address supply continuity, regional availability, or a material change that could affect production?
How should you make the final shortlist?
Advance suppliers that can connect a specific grade to your documented application, support that recommendation with relevant evidence, and commit to a qualification plan with clear acceptance criteria. Before approval, close any gaps in market-specific compliance documents, trial results, lot controls, change notification, or supply-continuity information.
Score candidates against the same requirements and record unresolved issues rather than masking them with an overall impression. The available supplier materials support this qualification approach, but they do not establish current prices, regional availability, or delivery commitments; obtain and verify those directly with each candidate.
