How to Choose a SPAD Sensor for LiDAR, 3D Imaging, or Low-Light Detection

Choose a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) by working backward from the measurement, not by selecting the highest advertised photon-detection efficiency. First specify wavelength, signal level, geometry and timing; then compare photon-detection efficiency (PDE) with dark count under the same conditions. Finally verify count-rate behavior, dead time, cooling, timing interfaces, optics and software. A single-channel module, a 320×1 linear array and a megapixel imaging sensor are different classes of instrument, not interchangeable performance tiers.

This framework is intended for engineers, product developers and laboratory buyers selecting SPAD hardware for direct time-of-flight (ToF), 3D imaging or extremely low-light detection.

What a SPAD measures

A SPAD is a single-photon avalanche diode biased above its breakdown voltage. One absorbed photon can trigger a self-sustaining avalanche; quenching circuitry stops that avalanche and restores the diode for the next event. The output is therefore a registered photon event rather than a continuously proportional photocurrent.

That behavior is powerful when photons arrive separately. Hamamatsu Photonics describes the choice this way: “The photon counting method is the better choice when you’re measuring extremely low light levels, so low that each individual photon arrival can be measured separately and the number of photons can be counted.” At higher flux, events can overlap. An analog detector or an SPAD system designed to aggregate many microcells may preserve amplitude information more usefully than a saturated single-photon counter.

In practical selection, distinguish three architectures:

  • Point or single-channel modules: one photon-counting output for a spot, timing experiment or spectrometer channel.
  • Linear arrays: one-dimensional channels for line sensing, spectral measurements or time-resolved laboratory instruments.
  • Two-dimensional imaging sensors: many pixels for spatial images, depth maps or 3D cameras, with substantially greater readout and data-processing requirements.

“Best SPAD” has no meaning until the required architecture and measurement are defined.

Question What to record Why it changes the choice
What is measured? Single-spot range, speed, spectral intensity, a 2D image, depth per pixel or a time-resolved waveform Sets point, linear or 2D geometry and the required output format
What is the source wavelength? Laser or emission center wavelength, bandwidth and possible wavelength drift PDE and optical filters are wavelength-dependent
How weak is the return? Expected photon rate, integration time and minimum usable signal-to-background ratio Determines whether PDE, dark count, cooling or a larger active area dominates
What timing is needed? Range precision, timing jitter, timestamp increment, repetition rate and maximum event rate Separates detector jitter from electronics resolution and throughput limits
Is spatial resolution required? Field of view, pixel or channel count, pixel pitch and frame rate Identifies whether a point detector, line array or imaging array is appropriate
What environment applies? Temperature range, ambient light, vibration, allowable power and enclosure constraints Affects dark counts, cooling, shielding and packaging
How will it integrate? Bias, quenching, trigger, synchronization, output protocol, cabling and software Some products are complete instruments; others are bare detector or sensor devices

Match the spectral response before comparing efficiency

Confirm that the source wavelength lies inside the detector’s useful response band. A PDE measured near a device’s peak cannot be transferred to a different wavelength, and two values measured at different wavelengths are not an apples-to-apples comparison.

For example, the Hamamatsu C11202-100 specifies a 320–900 nm response range. Pi Imaging Technology’s SPAD Lambda specifies 400–950 nm. A visible source may suit both, while a near-infrared source near 940 nm falls outside the stated range of the first example but inside the second. That observation does not establish system performance; filters, optics, detector temperature and bias still affect the result.

Record the complete optical chain:

  • Source center wavelength and spectral width.
  • Detector response at that wavelength, rather than only the peak value.
  • Filter transmission, lens throughput and window losses.
  • Whether ambient or solar radiation occupies the same band.

For pulsed LiDAR, also check whether the detector and front-end recover fast enough for the pulse width and repetition rate. A broad spectral response can be useful, but it may admit more background light unless filtering is applied.

Compare PDE and dark count together

Photon detection efficiency, or detection probability in some vendor terminology, is the chance that an incident photon produces a registered event under stated operating conditions. Dark count rate is the event rate measured without the desired optical signal. Weak-signal performance depends on both: increasing PDE helps collect signal photons, while dark events consume count-rate budget and raise the background floor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare values only when wavelength, temperature, excess bias and measurement bandwidth are aligned. Manufacturer definitions also differ: a “typical” value may not be a guaranteed limit; a median dark-count figure is not the same statistic as a maximum; and a peak PDE is not an average over the response band. If conditions cannot be matched, retain the numbers as device-specific reference points rather than ranking the parts.

Ambient light and scene background can exceed intrinsic dark counts. Use narrow optical filtering, shielding, gated acquisition or background subtraction where appropriate. For pulsed ToF, a gate that opens around the expected return can reject unrelated photons, but it introduces timing-control and synchronization requirements.

Temperature is a major practical variable. Dark counts generally change with temperature, so test candidates at the temperature range in which the product will operate. If the module includes cooling, account for its power, warm-up time, heat rejection and condensation controls rather than treating “cooled” as a free sensitivity improvement.

Understand timing, dead time and throughput

Direct ToF systems infer distance from photon arrival time, so timing behavior is more than a single “resolution” number. Examine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Detector timing jitter: variation in the time between photon arrival and a valid pulse.
  • Timestamp or time-to-digital resolution: the smallest interval represented by the timing electronics.
  • Dead time: the recovery interval after an event during which another event cannot be registered.
  • Maximum count rate: the rate at which events can be accepted without unacceptable distortion or loss.
  • Gating and time tagging: whether the system can select a time window or record individual arrival times.
  • Synchronization: trigger input, laser reference, clock stability and channel-to-channel skew.

A fine timestamp increment does not prove equally fine end-to-end range accuracy. Cable delay, discriminator walk, detector jitter, clock error and software timestamps all contribute. Pi Imaging lists 20 ps time-tagging resolution for SPAD Lambda and describes time tagging as optional in some system configurations. Fraunhofer IMS discusses SPAD timing in the picosecond range for photon-arrival measurements. Treat those statements as specifications of particular implementations, not a universal accuracy guarantee.

At high return rates, dead time and saturation can bias distance or intensity. Ask for the recovery model, linearity behavior and count-rate definition. A detector that is excellent for sparse photons may lose events when a nearby bright reflector produces a burst.

Select geometry for the measurement, not the marketing category

Single-channel point detection

A point detector is appropriate when one optical spot or one timing channel is sufficient. It can simplify alignment, reduce data volume and provide a large active area for collecting diffuse returns. For a single-spot range measurement with no spatial resolution requirement, Fraunhofer IMS notes that parallel SPAD elements over a larger detector area can increase usable range and reduce required laser power. This is an application-specific observation, not a guaranteed range improvement for every optical design.

Linear arrays

A linear array supports a line, spectrum or multiple independent timing channels. Verify channel pitch, active area per channel, uniformity, channel-to-channel timing skew, aggregate output rate and whether the readout is parallel or multiplexed. A 320×1 device is not a 2D camera: it cannot provide a conventional image without scanning or additional optics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two-dimensional arrays

A 2D SPAD sensor adds pixel count, fill factor, pixel pitch, crosstalk, readout architecture, frame rate and data bandwidth to the selection problem. Nominal array dimensions do not reveal the effective photosensitive area or the fraction of each pixel available for photons. For depth imaging, determine how many pixels can time-tag independently, whether histogramming occurs on-chip, and how overlapping returns are separated.

Also distinguish optical field of view from detector area. A larger sensor may increase collection area but require a different lens, while a smaller pixel pitch can increase spatial sampling yet reduce fill factor or per-pixel photon budget.

Application-specific priorities

LiDAR and direct ToF

Specify range precision, maximum unambiguous distance, pulse repetition rate, return-photon budget, eye-safety limits and whether the scene is scanned or imaged. For a single spot, prioritize active area, timing jitter, dead time and background rejection. For scanning systems, include scan rate and synchronization with the beam-steering mechanism. For flash or solid-state 3D LiDAR, prioritize pixel count, per-pixel timing, array uniformity, frame rate and data transport.

Check the complete optical and timing path: laser pulse width, transmit-receive separation, filter bandwidth, trigger latency, timestamp clock and calibration procedure. A detector with excellent intrinsic timing can still deliver poor range precision if the front-end discriminator or clock dominates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3D imaging

Define field of view, depth resolution, lateral resolution, frame rate and the number of simultaneous returns. Determine whether the scene contains bright and dark objects in one frame, because dynamic range and per-pixel saturation then matter. Ask how multipath, background light and overlapping echoes are represented in the output. A development sensor or announcement may demonstrate a concept without being an orderable camera module; confirm the actual package, interface, software and supply route.

Low-light detection

Decide whether the output must be a single count, a spectrum, a time trace or a spatial image. For photon-starved measurements, integration time, dark count, afterpulsing, optical throughput and shielding can matter more than peak PDE. If individual arrival times carry information, require time tagging or a compatible external time-to-digital converter. If amplitude or continuous intensity is essential and photons overlap frequently, compare an analog-capable detector architecture rather than forcing a photon-counting readout.

Check the complete module and electronics

A detector die is only one part of a usable instrument. Verify whether the quotation includes:

  • Stable bias generation and avalanche-quenching circuitry.
  • Amplifier, comparator and defined output logic levels.
  • Cooling method, temperature monitoring and heat-sink requirements.
  • Trigger input, synchronization output and clock reference.
  • Gating, histogramming or per-event time-tagging hardware.
  • USB, Ethernet, serial or other data interface, including sustained throughput.
  • Driver software, application programming interface, firmware updates and operating-system support.
  • Optical window, connector type, mounting dimensions and environmental limits.
  • Calibration data for PDE, timing offset, dark count and channel uniformity.

Hamamatsu describes integrated cooling and electronics in its C11202 series. Pi Imaging describes USB3 connectivity, software, optional control lines and cooling for SPAD Lambda. Those integrations can shorten development, but they also impose package, power and software constraints. A bare sensor may offer more design freedom while requiring a custom bias, quench, timing and thermal solution.

Examples of distinct SPAD form factors

The following figures are manufacturer statements for different products and years. They are illustrations of architecture and specification style, not a cross-vendor performance ranking.

Example Reported characteristics Appropriate interpretation
Hamamatsu C11202-100 Single-channel visible-region photon-counting module; 320–900 nm response; typical 0.03 kcps dark count and 70% PDE measured at 25 °C, peak wavelength and ±5 V; digital output Integrated point-detector example for low-light counting. Recheck the current datasheet at the intended wavelength and operating point.
Pi Imaging Technology SPAD Lambda 320×1 linear array; 400–950 nm window; 50% peak detection probability at 520 nm; median dark count below 250 cps; 20 ps time-tagging resolution, with time tagging optional in some systems Linear, time-resolved or spectral laboratory example; not a general 2D LiDAR camera.
Canon SPAD sensor announcement, December 15, 2021 3.2 megapixels, 6.39 μm pitch, operation in 0.002 lux, 69.4% PDE, and 24.4% PDE at 940 nm with 100 ps temporal resolution Illustrates the imaging-sensor direction and reported low-light/3D capability. The announcement does not establish current component availability.
Fraunhofer IMS SPADeye2-CMOS Described by Fraunhofer IMS as a SPAD-based CMOS LiDAR sensor for direct ToF applications Useful OEM and sensor-development reference; do not assume retail inventory or a directly orderable module.

Run an equivalent comparison before committing

When several candidates survive the requirements screen, use the same test conditions for each. A practical comparison sequence is:

  1. Fix the wavelength: illuminate every detector with the same calibrated source or narrowband test wavelength relevant to the product.
  2. Fix temperature and bias: record detector temperature, excess bias and warm-up state for every measurement.
  3. Measure dark events: block the optical input, use the same acquisition interval and report the statistic used, such as typical, median or maximum.
  4. Measure signal counts: use a known photon flux and report detected counts, integration time and background level.
  5. Measure timing: feed a common pulsed reference and separate detector jitter, electronics timestamp increment and trigger skew.
  6. Sweep rate: increase photon flux until dead-time correction, saturation or nonlinearity appears; record the usable count-rate range.
  7. Test background rejection: add representative ambient light and evaluate optical filtering, gating and false-event rate.
  8. Exercise the interface: verify sustained data transfer, trigger latency, dropped events, software timestamps and long-run thermal stability.
  9. Document geometry: record active area, pixel or channel pitch, fill factor, lens coverage and alignment tolerance.

Keep a conditions column beside every number. That record is more useful than a single ranking because it shows whether a candidate remains suitable when the wavelength, temperature or signal level changes.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing the largest PDE: Fix by comparing PDE and dark count at the application wavelength and temperature, then including background and dead time.
  • Comparing unlike geometries: Fix by separating point modules, linear arrays and 2D sensors before looking at numerical specifications.
  • Treating timestamp resolution as range accuracy: Fix by budgeting detector jitter, discriminator, clock, trigger and calibration errors.
  • Ignoring saturation: Fix by obtaining count-rate and dead-time behavior for the brightest expected return, not only the minimum signal.
  • Assuming a development announcement is a purchasable product: Fix by confirming package, availability, evaluation access, interface and support with the manufacturer.
  • Forgetting optics: Fix by calculating filter, lens, window and alignment losses alongside detector efficiency.
  • Underestimating integration: Fix by listing bias, quenching, cooling, synchronization, cables, software and mechanical mounting as procurement requirements.
  • Using unmatched vendor statistics: Fix by labeling typical, median, peak and guaranteed values and repeating critical tests under common conditions.

Availability, pricing and lifecycle checks

Specialist SPAD products can be sold as modules, evaluation hardware, OEM sensors or development information rather than as continuously stocked catalog components. Confirm current stock, regional purchasing route, minimum order quantity, lead time, export restrictions, documentation access and expected production lifetime. Do not infer price or availability from an older announcement or a research demonstrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a production design, ask about lot-to-lot variation, calibration retention, replacement policy, firmware support and whether the interface is proprietary. For a laboratory prototype, a bundled module with cooling and software may reduce engineering time even if its power and form factor are less flexible. For a high-volume product, a sensor die or OEM package may be preferable, but only after the custom electronics, thermal design and supply commitments are understood.

A decision rule you can use

Select the smallest architecture that satisfies the measurement: a cooled point module for one-channel photon timing, a linear array for line or spectral work, or a 2D SPAD sensor when simultaneous spatial samples are essential. Reject any candidate whose response band misses the source, whose dark-count and background behavior cannot meet the signal budget, or whose timing and count-rate limits fail the brightest and fastest expected returns. Among the remaining options, choose the package that provides the required cooling, synchronization, data path and software with acceptable power, optics and lifecycle risk.

The credible shortlist is therefore a set of candidates tested under equivalent wavelength, temperature, bias, background and timing conditions—not a universal winner based on one headline specification.
