How to choose a South African bank account for receiving money from abroad

Choose the account that delivers the highest predictable rand amount for your specific payment—not the bank with the lowest advertised receiving fee. Ask each bank for a transaction-specific estimate using the same currency, amount, purpose, account type and sender fee instruction. Then compare the exchange-rate quote, recipient charge, possible correspondent-bank deductions, declaration steps, account eligibility and the deadline for accepting or converting the money.

What determines how much you actually receive

An international payment is a chain of transactions rather than a single bank charge. The sender’s bank may charge for sending, one or more intermediary banks may deduct handling fees, and your South African bank may charge for receiving or converting the funds. The amount finally credited in rand also depends on the bank’s foreign-exchange buying rate at the time it processes the payment.

Capitec warns that fees from other processing banks may be deducted and may not be known before the payment arrives. Nedbank documents three common charge instructions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • OUR: the sender pays the transfer charges specified by the sending bank.
  • SHA: charges are shared between sender and recipient.
  • BEN: the recipient pays, so charges can be taken from the incoming amount.

These instructions do not guarantee a particular net amount because intermediary-bank practices and the conversion quote still matter. Compare the estimated rand credited after all known charges, not a receiving tariff in isolation.

Start with the payment details your sender needs

Give the sender the exact instructions supplied by your bank. A wrong account number, account type, SWIFT/BIC or clearing code can delay a payment or cause it to be returned. South Africa does not use an IBAN for ordinary local bank accounts, so do not substitute an invented IBAN; ask your bank which fields the sending bank requires.

Bank Details published for incoming payments Important qualification
Standard Bank Account number, account type, universal branch/SORT code 051001, and SWIFT SBZAZAJJ. The bank recommends a cheque or savings account. Its guidance says cross-border transfers can take a few business days; that is not a guaranteed service level.
FNB SWIFT FIRNZAJJ, plus the qualifying account details requested in its Global Receipts workflow. Accepted funds are paid into a cheque account, and the digital service is for qualifying-account holders.
Capitec SWIFT CABLZAJJ in field 57A and the account number in beneficiary field 59. Follow Capitec’s field-by-field instruction rather than relying on a generic bank-details template.
Absa SWIFT ABSAZAJJ, the account number and clearing code 632005. The cited instruction page does not establish a universal receiving fee or eligibility rule.
Nedbank SWIFT NEDSZAJJ and the current-account name and number listed in its payment instructions. Confirm that the digital inward-payment workflow applies to your particular account type.

Send the details through a secure channel and have the sender copy them exactly. Include the beneficiary’s full name as registered with the bank, physical address if the sending bank asks for it, account type, branch or clearing code where required, and the payment purpose. Ask your bank whether it wants an intermediary-bank field for the sender’s country or currency; do not guess one.

Standard Bank’s published receiving instructions are available at standardbank.co.za/southafrica/personal/learn/how-international-payments-work. Absa’s SWIFT details are at absa.co.za/personal/bank/international-banking/swift/.

Use a like-for-like cost comparison

Request an estimate from every shortlisted bank with identical inputs. A useful comparison sheet contains:

  • Amount and source currency, such as USD 2,000 or EUR 1,500.
  • Sending country and the sender’s bank.
  • Purpose of payment: salary, pension, gift, loan, own-account transfer, business receipt or another reason.
  • Your exact South African account type and whether the bank will credit rand or permit a foreign-currency balance for this route.
  • One-off or recurring frequency.
  • Whether the sender will use OUR, SHA or BEN, where those choices are available.
  • The bank’s quoted conversion rate, recipient fee and any taxes or other disclosed charges.

Ask for the expected rand amount after the bank’s conversion and recipient charges. Then ask whether a correspondent or intermediary bank could still deduct money before settlement. Keep the estimate with the date and time: exchange rates move, and an indicative rate is not a committed transaction quote.

FNB defines its bank buying rate for telegraphic transfers as the rate used to buy foreign currency received by SWIFT for deposit into a local rand account. It also says an indicative rate may differ from the actual rate quoted for the transaction. See its explanation at fnb.co.za/forex/understanding-forex/.

Compare the banks’ receiving workflows

Standard Bank: straightforward sender instructions

Standard Bank’s international-payment explainer gives a practical sender checklist: account number, account type, universal branch/SORT code 051001 and SWIFT SBZAZAJJ. It recommends a cheque or savings account for this purpose. The same explainer says a cross-border transfer can take a few business days, so treat that as a general expectation rather than a promised arrival deadline. It does not, by itself, establish that Standard Bank will be cheapest for your currency, amount or fee instruction.

FNB: digital acceptance and a 30-day conversion window

FNB Global Receipts lets qualifying-account holders use Online Banking or the mobile app to select the balance-of-payments (BoP) reason for an incoming payment and complete the acceptance process. FNB says the recipient has up to 30 days to convert the funds into rand; if they are not converted within that period, the payment is returned. Accepted funds go to a cheque account and use SWIFT FIRNZAJJ. Confirm that your account qualifies and obtain the current fee and exchange-rate quote before choosing this route. Details are at fnb.co.za/forex/payments/global-receipts.html.

Capitec: declaration before credit and variable intermediary costs

Capitec states that the account holder must declare money received from abroad before it is credited. Its foreign-exchange instructions specify SWIFT CABLZAJJ in field 57A and the account number in beneficiary field 59. Capitec’s current international-payments page states that its international receiving fee changes to R100 from 1 October 2026. That is a published bank fee, not an all-in price: processing-bank deductions and the conversion rate can change the net rand amount. Capitec also says it cannot guarantee exact clearing times because the foreign bank may use an intermediary or local bank. Read the instructions at capitecbank.co.za/personal/transact/foreign-exchange-services/ and the fee page at capitecbank.co.za/personal/transact/international-payments/.

Absa: clear SWIFT and clearing-code fields

Absa tells senders to use SWIFT ABSAZAJJ, the beneficiary’s account number and clearing code 632005. This is useful when a sender’s bank asks for both a BIC and a local clearing identifier. The cited page does not provide a complete comparison of receiving charges, conversion rates, account eligibility or processing times, so obtain those details directly before making a decision.

Nedbank: rate quote, reason selection and return option

Nedbank’s digital inward-payment service allows the recipient to select a reason, view a rate quote, accept the payment or return it to the sender. Its brochure says the recipient has up to 30 days to accept; if the payment is not accepted in that period, it is returned. The sender can choose OUR, SHA or BEN where supported. Nedbank lists SWIFT NEDSZAJJ and the current-account name and number in its instructions. Check the workflow at personal.nedbank.co.za/bank/international-banking/payments.html and the feature conditions at nedbank.co.za/content/dam/npw/NPWRSA/Banking/digital-inward-international-payments-features.pdf. Do not assume every Nedbank account type has identical functionality.

Understand declarations and exchange-control compliance

Incoming foreign-exchange transactions are subject to South African exchange-control requirements. The payment purpose is not a cosmetic field: it determines the balance-of-payments category and whether the bank needs supporting evidence.

FNB says recipients select the reason or BoP code and that cross-border transactions are reported to the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) through the authorised-dealer process. Capitec requires the account holder to declare incoming funds before credit. A bank may ask for documents that demonstrate the source and purpose of the money.

Before the sender transfers money, ask the receiving bank which code and documents apply to your case:

  • Salary or freelance work: employment, contract or invoice evidence may be requested.
  • Pension or annuity: the bank may ask for a pension statement or payer information.
  • Gift: a donor letter or other proof of the gift’s nature may be required.
  • Loan: keep the signed loan agreement and disbursement details available.
  • Own-account transfer: provide evidence that both accounts belong to you if requested.
  • Business receipt: invoices, contracts, registration details or other commercial records may be relevant.

There is no universal document list for every payment. Do not select a convenient reason that does not describe the transaction; incorrect declarations can delay settlement and create compliance questions.

Track the acceptance and conversion deadline

A payment can be held while the recipient supplies a reason, accepts a rate or completes a declaration. FNB says recipients have up to 30 days to convert incoming funds to rand before the payment is returned. Nedbank says recipients have up to 30 days to accept an inward payment, after which it is returned to the sender.

  1. Ask the sender for the transfer date, amount, currency and payment reference.
  2. Watch your bank’s online-banking inbox, app alerts and email for an inward-payment notification.
  3. Open the transaction and select the accurate payment purpose or BoP code.
  4. Review the quoted exchange rate, recipient fee and expected rand proceeds.
  5. Upload or supply supporting documents if the bank requests them.
  6. Accept and convert the payment before the bank’s stated deadline; save the confirmation.

Do not wait until the final day. A weekend, public holiday, missing document or unanswered compliance query can consume processing time, and a returned payment may incur another sending and intermediary charge.

Choose the right account for your pattern of receipts

Occasional personal transfers

For an occasional gift or own-account transfer, prioritize clear sender instructions, a simple declaration flow and transparent total-cost estimates. A low published receiving fee may not compensate for a poor exchange rate or a large BEN deduction.

Monthly salary, pension or freelance income

For recurring receipts, workflow friction matters as much as price. Confirm whether you must manually declare every payment, whether the account accepts the payment type, how quickly the bank presents the rate quote, and whether your records can show each declared purpose. Compare a representative month rather than a single small transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Business payments

Business receipts can involve invoices, contracts, tax records and more detailed source-of-funds checks. Ask the bank’s foreign-exchange or business team which account type is eligible and whether the quoted retail workflow is appropriate. Do not assume a personal account can receive commercial payments simply because it has a SWIFT code.

Foreign-currency retention

The evidence reviewed describes conversion into rand for the cited workflows; it does not establish that every bank or account can hold the incoming currency. If you need to retain dollars, euros or another currency, ask specifically whether that account supports foreign-currency settlement, what conversion events are mandatory, and which fees apply.

A practical shortlist method

  1. Eliminate ineligible accounts. Confirm account type, residency or customer status, payment purpose and whether the bank accepts the expected currency and sender route.
  2. Prepare one payment specification. Record amount, currency, sending country, frequency, purpose and preferred OUR, SHA or BEN instruction.
  3. Request written estimates. Ask for the receiving fee, conversion-rate basis, estimated rand credit and possible intermediary deductions.
  4. Test the workflow. Ask how you declare the payment, where you see the quote, which documents can be uploaded and how long acceptance takes.
  5. Score reliability. Check whether the sender instructions are complete, whether a branch or clearing code is required, and how the bank handles a rejected or returned payment.
  6. Recheck before sending. Bank tariffs, rates, eligibility and digital labels change. Confirm the current terms on the day the sender initiates the transfer.
Decision factor Question to ask the bank Why it matters
Net proceeds What rand amount is expected after your quoted rate and recipient charges? The receiving tariff alone cannot predict the amount credited.
Intermediary exposure Can correspondent or processing-bank fees still be deducted, and under which fee instruction? Unexpected deductions can make a nominally cheap route expensive.
Eligibility Does my exact account type accept this payment and purpose? Some digital services are restricted to qualifying accounts.
Compliance Which BoP reason and supporting documents apply? An incorrect or incomplete declaration can hold the payment.
Deadline How many days do I have to accept or convert before return? Missing the window can send the funds back and create new charges.
Timing What is the normal route time, and what events can delay it? Intermediaries and compliance checks mean no single bank-time promise applies to every transfer.

What to do when a payment is delayed or short

The sender says it was sent, but nothing appears

Verify the beneficiary name, account number, SWIFT/BIC, clearing code and payment reference against your bank’s instructions. Ask the sender for the transfer confirmation and value date, then give those details to your bank’s international-payments team. Check whether the bank is waiting for a declaration or document rather than assuming the transfer has failed.

The credited amount is lower than expected

Compare the sender’s debit, the fee instruction, your bank’s receiving charge and the final conversion rate. Ask whether a correspondent bank deducted a fee. The same currency and amount can produce different rand proceeds on different dates because buying rates move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bank requests documents

Provide documents that match the declared purpose and respond through the bank’s secure channel. If the payment was labelled incorrectly, ask the bank how to correct the declaration rather than submitting a contradictory explanation.

The payment is close to its deadline

Complete the declaration and acceptance immediately, contact the bank if the digital option is unavailable, and ask whether the bank can extend or manually process the payment. If it is returned, confirm whether the sender must initiate a new transfer and whether the fee instruction should change.

Is there a single cheapest or fastest bank?

No. The available evidence does not support an overall winner. Your result depends on the currency pair, transfer size, sender’s bank, intermediary route, OUR/SHA/BEN choice, account eligibility, conversion quote, payment purpose and how quickly you complete the declaration. A bank with a lower listed receiving fee can deliver fewer rand if its rate is less favourable or an intermediary deduction applies.

Use matched, transaction-specific estimates and reassess them when the amount, currency, frequency or purpose changes. Reconfirm tariffs and digital workflows because the cited guidance was checked on 13 October 2026 and these details are volatile. In particular, Capitec’s R100 receiving fee is stated as effective from 1 October 2026; verify the current tariff before relying on it.
