The right soundbar depends on what you want to improve: clearer TV audio, stronger bass, or a more immersive surround setup. Compare the full system—speakers, subwoofer and connections—not just its price or Dolby Atmos label. RTINGS’ 2026 roundup names the Samsung HW-Q990F its overall pick, the JBL Bar 1000MK2 its mid-range pick and the Hisense AX5140Q its budget pick. Those are one publisher’s dated recommendations, not universal winners.
Start with the kind of upgrade you want
A basic bar can simplify a TV-audio upgrade; a surround system adds speakers and placement requirements in exchange for a more enveloping presentation. Soundbars generally take less space and can be easier to set up than a comparable traditional home-theater system, according to RTINGS’ 2026 roundup, which says it has tested more than 250 soundbars. That testing total is not a market statistic.

- For TV and dialogue: Prioritize clear dialogue and straightforward setup. A higher channel count or Atmos support alone does not establish that a bar is the best choice for everyday viewing.
- For movies and immersive audio: Look for the included surround speakers and physical up-firing drivers as well as supported formats. The room and speaker placement affect what you hear.
- For gaming: Check HDMI passthrough resolution and refresh rate, and look for latency information where available. A soundbar may support Atmos but still constrain a console or PC connection.
- For music streaming: Confirm that the wireless services you actually use are supported. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and services such as Spotify Connect are not interchangeable.
Compare complete systems, not just the bar
Channel figures describe speaker configuration, but do not tell the whole story. Count what is included, where each component must go and how it connects. These three examples are RTINGS’ choices in its 2026 roundup; current prices and availability were not established in the cited coverage.

| Example | Configuration and included hardware | Notable trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung HW-Q990F | RTINGS’ overall pick; 11.1.4 channels, a subwoofer, two satellite speakers and up-firing drivers; supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. | RTINGS says the successor HW-Q990H adds some features, but considers the Q990F better value after discounts. Prices and stock vary and were not verified. |
| JBL Bar 1000MK2 | RTINGS’ mid-range pick; 7.1.4 channels, battery-powered detachable satellites and a 10-inch subwoofer. | Its HDMI inputs pass through up to 4K at 60Hz, not 4K at 120Hz, according to RTINGS. That can matter for gaming setups. |
| Hisense AX5140Q | RTINGS’ budget pick; 5.1.4 channels, dedicated satellites and up-firing drivers. | RTINGS’ reviewed configuration has Bluetooth but lacks Wi-Fi and Spotify Connect, which limits wireless-service options. |
RTINGS’ labels are useful starting points, not a guarantee that one model suits every room, source device or budget. What Hi-Fi? publishes its own budget guide and says it pairs each tested soundbar with a reference TV and compares products within price and feature classes. Its rankings can differ because its comparison and editorial judgments are its own.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Check the TV connection before choosing
Find the TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC and check the audio formats supported by the TV, soundbar and source device. What Hi-Fi?’s budget soundbar guide explains that ARC can carry Atmos in lossy Dolby Digital Plus, while eARC can carry higher-quality formats such as Dolby TrueHD Atmos. The format you receive depends on the capabilities of every device in the chain and how they are connected; eARC on one component does not make an unsupported source or soundbar compatible.
If you connect a console or streaming device through the soundbar, check its passthrough limits as well as the TV’s ports. For example, the JBL Bar 1000MK2’s 4K/60Hz ceiling may be a mismatch if your gaming setup needs 4K/120Hz passthrough.

Match the speaker layout to the room
Consider the soundbar’s width, a practical spot for the subwoofer and whether rear speakers can be placed around the listening area. A system with dedicated satellites needs somewhere for those speakers to go. Up-firing drivers are part of the hardware design; an Atmos badge by itself does not tell you how convincing the effect will be in a particular room.
Detachable satellites, as on the JBL Bar 1000MK2, can make placement more convenient where running power or speaker cables is awkward. They do not eliminate the need to place surround speakers appropriately, and their battery-powered design is a different trade-off from permanently positioned speakers.
