For repeatable neighborhood-noise tracking, choose an IEC 61672 Class 2 integrating sound level meter that records time-averaged LAeq and maximum levels, saves time-stamped data, and can be checked with a compatible calibrator. A phone app with a validated external microphone can help with preliminary observations, but it is not automatically suitable for a formal complaint. Confirm your local authority’s measurement rules before treating any reading as evidence.
Decide what “tracking” needs to prove
A meter for occasional curiosity has different requirements from one used to document recurring disturbances. Before comparing products, decide whether you need a pattern record or a measurement that another party might evaluate.

| Use case | What the record should show | Practical equipment level |
|---|---|---|
| Informal pattern tracking | When noise occurs, how long episodes last, and how levels vary | A reliable Class 2 meter or a carefully validated phone-and-external-microphone system |
| Discussion with a neighbor, landlord, or strata | Time-stamped observations that make the recurring pattern easy to understand | Prefer a Class 2 integrating meter with LAeq, maximum level, and data logging |
| Formal complaint, tribunal, or court | Measurements collected under the authority’s required method and equipment rules | Check the current local procedure first; a consumer meter may not satisfy it |
The sources available for this guide do not establish acceptance rules for any particular city, landlord, tribunal, or court. A reading can describe what your instrument measured without proving that a legal limit was exceeded.
Why IEC 61672 Class 2 is the sensible starting point
IEC 61672-1:2013 defines performance requirements for sound level meters, including time-weighting and integrating-averaging functions. It specifies two performance categories: Class 1 and Class 2. The standard covers a handheld meter and systems built from separate components.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For neighborhood tracking, Class 2 is generally the practical category to investigate because the goal is a repeatable record over time rather than laboratory-grade precision. The label alone is not enough: look for documentation showing that the specific meter, or the complete measurement system, conforms. A marketing statement about one microphone or sensor does not establish conformity for the assembled instrument.
- Class 1: the tighter performance category, normally chosen when the measurement specification or local rule calls for it.
- Class 2: the less stringent IEC category and a reasonable baseline for documenting recurring neighborhood events when local rules do not require Class 1.
- Unclassified meters: they may display decibels, but the display does not by itself demonstrate IEC performance or make readings suitable for a dispute.
If a seller claims “IEC 61672,” ask whether the claim applies to the complete meter and whether conformity documentation identifies the model. Keep that evidence with your measurement records.
Functions that matter more than a large decibel display
A momentary number that changes every second is hard to use when you are trying to explain a disturbance. Prioritize instruments that calculate and save measurements over a defined interval.
| Feature | Why it matters for neighborhood tracking | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Time-averaged LAeq | Represents the equivalent continuous A-weighted level over the selected period, making recurring episodes easier to compare | Confirm LAeq is a recorded metric, not merely an instantaneous display mode |
| Maximum level | Captures the highest level reached during an interval, which can reveal short peaks hidden by an average | Check how the meter labels and stores maximum readings |
| Time-stamped logging | Connects a reading to the exact time of a bang, party, vehicle, or other event | Look for internal memory, clock information, and an interval or event-log setting |
| Data export | Lets you retrieve the record instead of transcribing a screen | Verify the available export method and file format |
| Compatible calibrator | Provides a way to check the meter and microphone as a measurement chain | Confirm the calibrator opening, level, frequency, and microphone fit |
| Dedicated microphone | Allows the microphone to be positioned consistently and checked separately from the display unit | Confirm that the instrument’s conformity claim covers the microphone and connection |
NIOSH’s sound-level-meter app lists LAeq and maximum-level readings among its available metrics. That is a useful indication of the functions to seek in a dedicated meter, not a certification of any unlisted product.

A practical buying checklist
Use this checklist on a product page or in a conversation with a seller. A model that fails several of these checks may still be useful for a rough indication, but it is a poor choice for a repeatable log.
- Is the exact model documented as IEC 61672 Class 2 (or Class 1 if your local rule requires it)?
- Does the conformity statement apply to the complete meter and microphone system?
- Can it calculate and store LAeq?
- Can it store maximum levels for the same interval?
- Does it create time-stamped records and provide a way to export them?
- Can you perform a field check with a compatible acoustic calibrator?
- Are the microphone, cable, windscreen, and any extension approved or specified by the maker?
- Does the manufacturer explain how the instrument should be protected during outdoor or long-duration monitoring?
- Can you keep the clock, interval, weighting, and other settings consistent between sessions?
A useful search phrase is “IEC 61672 Class 2 sound level meter with data logging.” Treat that phrase as a way to find the category, not as proof that every result meets the standard. Confirm the model-specific evidence and the functions above before ordering.
Phone apps: useful screening tool, not an automatic substitute
A phone can help answer an initial question: does the noise happen often enough to justify a more controlled log? It is less dependable when the result must withstand scrutiny.

The NIOSH Sound Level Meter app is available for iOS. NIOSH reports accuracy within ±2 dBA under tests at the NIOSH acoustics laboratory and describes the app with a calibrated external microphone. NIOSH says Android-app accuracy verification is not currently possible. It also does not present the app as a replacement for a professional meter or as suitable for compliance purposes.

That limitation is important because the phone, operating system, app, microphone, cable, and any adapter function as one system. Changing the phone or microphone can change the result. Guidance from the World Health Organization cautions that built-in smartphone microphones are unsuitable for accurate sound-level measurement; a phone paired with an external microphone still needs validation as a system.
Use an app for preliminary observations, then move to a documented Class 2 meter when you need a repeatable record. If you continue with a phone, record the exact phone model, app version, external microphone, calibration method, weighting, interval, and position for every session.
Calibration: make the meter’s reading traceable to a check
Calibration is not an optional button that turns an unknown device into legal evidence. It is a check that the meter-and-microphone chain is responding as expected before and after measurements.

- Confirm compatibility. Check that the calibrator opening fits the microphone and that its output level and frequency match the meter’s calibration procedure. Do not assume a generic calibrator is suitable.
- Inspect the chain. Check the microphone, cable, connectors, battery, memory, clock, and windscreen. A damaged cable or loose connector can invalidate a session.
- Run the pre-session check. Couple the calibrator to the microphone, select the instructed setting, and verify the expected response. Record the date, time, meter identity, calibrator identity, and result.
- Keep settings fixed. Use the same frequency weighting, time weighting, interval, and logging mode throughout a comparable series unless your local method says otherwise.
- Run the post-session check. Repeat the check after monitoring and record the result. A material change means the session needs investigation before you rely on it.
- Retain service records. Keep any laboratory calibration certificate and note when the manufacturer or applicable standard says the equipment should be recalibrated.
The calibrator checks the measurement chain; it does not establish that a noise event violated a local limit. It also does not remove the need to position and protect the microphone correctly.
Set up a repeatable neighborhood monitoring session
Consistency is what turns separate readings into a useful pattern. Change as few variables as possible between sessions.
- Define the question. Write down whether you are tracking late-night music, construction, vehicle noise, impact sounds, or another source, and what time window matters.
- Choose a defensible location. Use the same position for each session and note whether the microphone is indoors, outdoors, near a window, or at a property boundary. Follow any local method that specifies placement.
- Configure the meter. Select the required A-weighting or other weighting, choose the time interval, enable LAeq and maximum-level logging, and verify the clock.
- Complete the pre-check. Perform the compatible calibrator check and write down the result before recording neighborhood sound.
- Start the log before the expected event. A record that begins after the disturbance has started cannot show when it began.
- Keep an event diary. Note the start and end time, what you heard, weather or unusual conditions, and anything that could have affected the microphone. Do not replace the instrument’s log with memory.
- Protect the equipment. For long-term outdoor monitoring, use the manufacturer’s specified protection for the instrument and microphone. A windscreen, stand, or tripod is only appropriate if it is compatible with the system.
- Finish with the post-check. Run the calibration check again and save the result with the session file.
- Export and preserve the original data. Keep an untouched copy, then make a working copy for charts or annotations. Record any conversion or editing you perform.
How to read LAeq and maximum levels together
LAeq and maximum level answer different questions. LAeq describes the average acoustic energy over the interval you selected; maximum level shows the highest recorded point in that interval. A short, sharp impact may produce a high maximum while contributing little to a long average. A steady source can produce a less dramatic maximum but a persistently elevated LAeq.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose intervals that match the event. Short intervals can show when a burst occurred; longer intervals make it easier to compare an entire evening or night. Whatever interval you choose, use it consistently and report it beside every result. A chart without the interval, weighting, location, and calibration information is difficult to interpret.

Compare like with like: the same microphone position, settings, and logging method. Separate background periods from event periods in your notes, and identify gaps or equipment changes rather than silently filling them.
Outdoor use and accessory decisions
Long-term outdoor monitoring exposes equipment to wind, moisture, temperature changes, and accidental movement. EPA Ireland’s draft guidance advises protecting the instrument and microphone according to the manufacturer’s recommended approach. It does not establish one universally suitable windscreen, tripod, or microphone stand.
- Windscreen: buy one specified for the microphone and the intended conditions; an ill-fitting cover can alter the response or fail to protect the capsule.
- Tripod or stand: use only when the microphone mount and cable routing are compatible, and secure the setup against movement.
- Weather protection: follow the maker’s outdoor instructions rather than improvising a sealed enclosure that could affect the acoustic response.
- Power and storage: verify battery life and memory for the complete monitoring interval, including time for the pre- and post-checks.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
| Mistake | Why it weakens the record | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Buying the cheapest meter that displays dB | The display does not prove IEC performance, averaging, or logging accuracy | Verify model-specific IEC 61672 evidence and recorded LAeq and maximum functions |
| Using a built-in phone microphone as a precision instrument | Smartphone hardware is not automatically suitable for accurate level measurement | Use a validated external microphone system for screening, or a dedicated meter for repeatable tracking |
| Recording only the loudest number | A peak alone does not show duration or the level across an interval | Save LAeq and maximum together with timestamps |
| Skipping calibration | You cannot identify response drift or a connection problem | Check before and after the series with a compatible calibrator |
| Moving the microphone between sessions | Position changes can look like changes in neighborhood noise | Use a consistent location and document unavoidable changes |
| Leaving equipment exposed without guidance | Wind, moisture, or movement can contaminate a long recording | Apply the manufacturer’s protection method and use compatible accessories |
| Assuming a reading proves a violation | Acceptance and limits depend on the local authority and procedure | Check the current rules before collecting evidence for a formal complaint |
When to involve an acoustics professional
Consider a qualified acoustics professional or an accredited laboratory when the outcome could affect a legal proceeding, tenancy decision, regulatory action, or substantial expense. A professional can advise on the applicable measurement method, equipment class, placement, calibration records, and report format. The available guidance does not identify a particular provider or guarantee that any consumer meter will be accepted by your authority.

A decision path you can use today
- Need only a quick indication? Start with a phone app, but treat the result as preliminary and document the phone, app, microphone, and settings.
- Need a repeatable multi-day record? Choose an IEC 61672 Class 2 integrating meter with LAeq, maximum level, time-stamped logging, and export.
- Need defensible evidence for a formal decision? Check the authority’s current procedure first; it may require a specified class, calibration, placement, or professional measurement.
- Need outdoor or overnight monitoring? Confirm the maker’s protection instructions, compatible windscreen or stand, battery capacity, memory, and a pre- and post-session calibration plan.
The best purchase is not the meter with the biggest number on its screen. It is the complete, documented system that can measure the metric you need, preserve when it happened, and be checked before you rely on the pattern.
