For most homes, the right winter setup is three separate tools: a manageable snow shovel for paths and around the house, rock salt or another labelled de-icer for melting thin ice, and sand or traction grit when you need underfoot grip. A windshield ice scraper belongs in the car, not as a replacement for a path shovel. Choose equipment that matches your strength, height, surface and local weather, then clear fresh snow before treating ice.
The short answer: what to buy
Start with the area you must clear and the person who will do the work. A snow shovel should be light enough to handle safely, with a comfortable height and head width. Push snow whenever possible and take small loads rather than trying to lift a deep, heavy layer. For icy paths, salt is the treatment that melts ice or helps stop it forming; sand or grit mainly provides traction. Keep a separate windshield scraper and brush for vehicle windows.

| Equipment | Primary job | Choose it when | Do not use it as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snow shovel | Move loose or accumulated snow from paths, entrances and around the home | You need to remove snow physically and the tool fits your height and strength | A de-icer; it does not melt ice |
| Rock salt or labelled de-icer | Melt existing ice or snow and help prevent ice forming | Temperatures are at or below freezing and moisture is present or forecast | A substitute for removing deep snow or compacted ice |
| Sand or traction grit | Increase friction under shoes and tyres | You need grip, or salt is unavailable or unsuitable | An equivalent to salt: it does not de-ice |
| Windshield ice scraper and brush | Clear frost and ice from vehicle glass | You are preparing a car for winter driving | A home-path shovel or walkway treatment |
Official guidance does not establish one universally best blade width, material, brand or shovel design. The useful comparison is whether a particular tool is light, comfortable and suitable for the area you can safely clear.

Assess the job before buying anything
Measure the clearing area in practical terms
List the surfaces that need attention: the route from the door to the pavement, steps, the entrance, sloped sections, and areas around the foundation or downspouts. The Government of Canada specifically includes walkways and areas near the foundation and downspouts in home snow-clearing guidance (Clear snow and ice). A narrow entrance and a long driveway are different jobs, even if both are described as “clearing snow.”

Identify where ice is most likely
Prioritise entrances, steps, slopes, shaded sections and places that stay wet. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises identifying pedestrian areas prone to ice, while GOV.UK calls for extra attention on steps and steep paths (HSE slips and trips FAQs; GOV.UK: Clear snow from a road, path or cycleway). These locations determine how much physical clearing and traction treatment you need.
Match the tool to the person
Consider the user’s height, strength, balance and ability to work repeatedly in the cold. Derbyshire County Council recommends a shovel with a comfortable height and head width that is not too heavy (Adverse Weather Guidance 2024). If more than one person will clear snow, a tool that the smaller or less-strong user can control is the safer shared choice.
How to choose a snow shovel
1. Choose manageable weight before maximum capacity
A large head can move more snow per pass, but a full load of wet snow can become difficult to lift. A shovel that is light enough to control when empty and loaded is generally more useful than one that encourages oversized loads. No source reviewed here supports a universal “best” width, so treat head size as a fit decision rather than a performance ranking.
2. Check height and head width while standing naturally
The handle should allow a comfortable working posture for the person using it. Head width should let that person clear the intended path without forcing awkward reaches. If you must bend sharply, stretch far ahead or twist to one side to discharge a load, the shovel is a poor fit regardless of its advertised capacity.
3. Match the shovel to the snow you normally face
Fresh, loose snow is the easiest material to push or lift. Snow becomes harder to move after foot traffic compacts it, and deep or wet loads are more strenuous. Buy for the conditions you can safely handle, not for an occasional extreme depth that may tempt you to overload the tool. For compacted layers, physical clearing still has to be done; salt alone will not remove compacted snow or ice (Gloucestershire County Council snow-clearing guide).

- SNOW SHOVEL AND SHOW PUSHER: 18-in combination blade shape is ideal for shoveling and pushing snow
- DURABLE BLADE: Nylon wear strip prolongs blade life and does not cause damage to deck, patio and other ground surfaces
- ERGONOMIC HANDLE: Ergonomic handle for easier shoveling; 37.4 in. ergonomic handle for more comfortable shoveling
- OVERSIZED HANDLE: Oversized D-Grip handle for comfortable grip with gloved hands
4. Prefer a tool you can push when conditions allow
Derbyshire guidance recommends pushing snow where possible. A pushable load reduces repeated lifting, but only if the shovel remains controllable and the path gives you room to move snow aside. You still need a safe way to place snow without blocking doors, drains or the walking route.
5. Ignore unsupported “best shovel” rankings
There is no evidence in the cited official guidance for a single optimal blade width, a specific material, or one design that is best for every property. Compare actual products on weight, dimensions, handle comfort, intended task and the surface you must clear. Be cautious of claims that promise universal superiority without stating conditions or measurements.

- Map the route. Note the entrance, steps, slopes, shaded or wet areas and the total path length.
- Set a handling limit. The person doing the work should be able to carry, push and empty the shovel without straining or losing balance.
- Check dimensions. Compare handle height and head width with that person’s stance and the path width; there is no official one-size specification.
- Plan snow placement. Decide where snow can be pushed without blocking access, creating a slippery pile or covering drainage points.
- Keep the load small. During use, push where possible and lift only manageable amounts, keeping the load close to your body and avoiding twisting, as Derbyshire advises.
- Reconsider the job if it exceeds your capability. Arrange help before a storm rather than attempting a task that is unsafe for you.
Safe and efficient snow-clearing technique
Clear early, while snow is loose
GOV.UK advises clearing early in the day when snow is fresh and loose. Early clearing reduces the chance that foot traffic will compress it into a harder layer (GOV.UK snow-clearing guidance). If snow continues, you may need more than one lighter pass instead of waiting for one deep accumulation.
Push first; lift only what you can control
Use a pushing motion for thin or moderate snow where the route permits. When lifting is necessary, take a smaller load rather than trying to clear deep snow in one scoop. Keep the load close to your body, avoid twisting while throwing it, and place it to the side with a controlled movement. These handling points come from Derbyshire’s adverse-weather guidance (Derbyshire County Council guidance).
Never pour water onto snow or ice
Water can refreeze and create a more dangerous glaze. GOV.UK expressly advises against using water to clear snow. Remove snow mechanically, then use an appropriate de-icer or traction material for the remaining conditions.

Inspect the route after clearing
Pay particular attention to steps, steep sections, entrances and shaded or persistently wet patches. A path that looks clear may still have a thin layer of ice where temperatures remain below freezing, so these areas deserve the closest check before anyone walks on them.

Use a scraper for vehicle windows
An ice scraper is primarily a car-preparation tool. The National Weather Service includes a windshield scraper and brush in a winter survival kit (Prepare! Don’t Let a Winter Storm Take You by Surprise). Staffordshire County Council likewise lists an ice scraper and de-icer among winter driving supplies (Winter driving).
Do not substitute it for path equipment
A windshield scraper is not designed to move snow from a walkway or provide lasting traction. Keep it with the vehicle, and buy a separate snow shovel plus a path treatment for the home. If a car is parked outside, the scraper and brush solve a different problem from the one addressed by your shovel and grit.
Salt, sand and grit: the important difference
| Material | What it does | What it cannot reliably do | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rock salt or another labelled salt de-icer | Helps prevent ice forming and melts existing ice or snow when moisture and temperatures allow | It does not instantly work, and it does not remove deep snow or compacted ice | After physical clearing, on icy or potentially icy pedestrian areas |
| Sand or traction grit | Adds friction underfoot | It is not equivalent to a de-icer and does not melt ice | Immediate grip, or when salt is unavailable or inappropriate |
| Ash or sand when salt is unavailable | Can provide grip | Does not provide salt’s melting action | Temporary traction according to local advice |
How salt works
HSE says rock salt is the most commonly used grit and can stop ice forming and melt existing ice or snow. It needs time to dissolve into moisture, so it is not an instant fix. Heavy rain can wash it away, reducing its effect (HSE slips and trips FAQs).
What “grit” means locally
Terminology varies. In some public guidance, “grit” refers to rock salt; in everyday shopping, “grit” may mean a non-melting traction aggregate. Read the product label for its intended function. If the label describes traction, do not expect it to melt ice. If it is a salt de-icer, follow the stated surface and application instructions.

Use only enough salt
Gloucestershire County Council warns that excessive salt is unnecessary, wasteful and harmful to the environment (How to clear snow and grit a path or driveway). More material is not automatically faster or safer. Apply sparingly and distribute it over the areas people actually use.
How much salt or grit should you apply?
There is no universal dose in the official sources cited here. Recommendations depend on the surface, temperature, moisture and local policy, so use the product label and local authority advice first.
| Published example | Amount described | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| West Lothian Council | About one tablespoon per square metre | A local public leaflet recommendation, not a universal product specification (Winter Service in West Lothian) |
| Gloucestershire County Council | A small handful for a metre of surface | A local guide’s example; conditions and terminology may differ (How to clear snow and grit a path or driveway) |
These examples illustrate why copying a single number across every path, product and weather event is inappropriate. Do not treat either figure as a guaranteed treatment rate for a different salt, surface or climate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to apply salt or traction grit
- Check the forecast and surface. HSE advises gritting when frost, ice or snow is forecast, or when pedestrian walkways are likely to be damp or wet while temperatures are at or below freezing.
- Clear loose snow first. Shovel the walking route so treatment reaches the remaining icy or wet surface. Salt is not a replacement for removing snow or compacted ice.
- Select the function you need. Use a labelled salt de-icer for melting or preventing ice; use sand or traction grit when the immediate requirement is grip.
- Spread a light, even application. Follow the package directions and local advice rather than estimating a heavy layer.
- Allow time to work. Salt must dissolve into moisture, and heavy rain may wash it away. Recheck the path instead of assuming one application remains effective.
- Re-treat priority points. Entrances, steps, slopes, shaded areas and persistently wet sections deserve attention first.
Decision guide for common home situations
Fresh snow on a level front path
Use a manageable shovel early, push where possible and move small loads. If freezing conditions follow, inspect the cleared surface and apply a modest amount of salt or traction grit according to the product label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA shaded step that stays damp
Make this a priority area because shade and retained moisture increase the chance of ice. Physically clear snow, then use salt if melting is required or traction grit if grip is the immediate concern. Recheck it because salt can be washed away by rain.

Compacted snow after heavy foot traffic
Do not expect salt alone to remove the compacted layer. Use a suitable physical clearing method within your capability, then treat residual ice. If the work requires force or lifting you cannot safely manage, arrange assistance.
A car covered in frost
Use the windshield scraper and brush kept for the vehicle. Do not take the scraper as evidence that you have the equipment needed for the home’s paths.
A large or steep area you cannot safely clear
Stop rather than overexerting yourself. Canadian government guidance says people unable to complete the work can seek help from a local professional, friend, family member or neighbour (Clear snow and ice).

- Is the route physically cleared rather than merely covered with salt?
- Have steps, slopes, entrances, shaded sections and wet spots been checked separately?
- Is the shovel light and short enough for the person using it to control safely?
- Are loads small, kept close to the body and lifted without twisting?
- Has water been avoided so it cannot refreeze on the path?
- Was salt applied sparingly, with time allowed for it to dissolve?
- Could rain have washed the treatment away?
- Is the task beyond the resident’s strength, balance or medical limits?
If the final question is yes, arrange help instead of treating personal safety as an afterthought. A well-chosen tool cannot make an unsafe workload safe.
A compact winter equipment checklist
- Snow shovel: comfortable height and head width, manageable weight, and suitable for pushing and small-load lifting.
- Salt de-icer: a labelled product for the surface and conditions, used according to local instructions.
- Traction grit or sand: for grip where melting is not the objective or salt is unavailable.
- Windshield scraper and brush: stored with the car for vehicle windows.
- Plan for help: a friend, neighbour or local professional if the area or conditions exceed your capability.
The safest setup is not the largest shovel or the most salt. It is a combination that lets the user clear fresh snow early, treat the genuinely icy parts of the route, and avoid work that cannot be done without strain or loss of control.
