Choose a smartwatch by confirming it works with your exact phone first. Then compare battery estimates under similar settings, check that it tracks the activities you care about, and verify that its payment service supports your country and card. Before buying, confirm the case fits your wrist and that any replacement band or charger is compatible with that specific model.
1. Check phone compatibility before comparing features
A watch’s feature list matters only if it can pair with your phone. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility guidance for the exact watch generation, phone model and operating-system version—not just whether the box says “Android” or “iPhone.” Requirements and feature access can vary by generation and phone brand.

For example, Samsung’s US guidance says Galaxy Watch models running Wear OS, from Watch4 onward, are not compatible with iOS. Android requirements vary by generation, and some manufacturer-specific functions may be limited when a Galaxy Watch is paired with a non-Samsung phone. Review Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and phone compatibility guidance for the relevant model and market. Apple’s Apple Watch support page covers pairing generally, but does not establish current model-specific iPhone requirements; check the exact model’s current listing before purchase.
2. Compare battery estimates on equal terms
Battery claims are useful only when the conditions are clear. Record the watch model and case size, whether the always-on display is enabled, and whether the quoted figure uses a battery-saving mode. Also account for your likely use: built-in GPS, mobile network use and weak signal can affect runtime. Manufacturer estimates are not independent, like-for-like tests.

Think about your charging routine as well as the headline number. If you want overnight sleep tracking, consider whether the watch can be charged at a time that does not interrupt it. For GPS workouts, check whether the watch uses its own GPS or relies on the phone; Google notes that built-in GPS can use more battery. Its guidance on GPS on Fitbit devices and Pixel Watch explains the distinction.
3. Match fitness tracking to your activities
Start with the workouts and health-related data you actually plan to use. A broad list of sensors or metrics is not, by itself, proof that a watch measures them accurately or is suitable for medical decisions. Treat fitness features as tracking tools, not as a clinical diagnosis.

- GPS: Determine whether GPS is built into the watch or supplied by a paired phone. This affects phone dependence during an outdoor workout and can affect battery use.
- Sleep and health-related tracking: Confirm which measurements are offered on the exact model and whether you need a particular app or compatible phone. Samsung documents activity, steps, exercise, sleep, heart-rate and other health-related tracking for the Galaxy Watch5 in its Watch5 feature information.
- App and phone dependencies: Check whether the metric or workout feature requires a companion app, account, particular phone brand or subscription. A feature listed by the manufacturer may not be available in every pairing or region.
4. Verify contactless payments for your country and card
Do not treat “supports payments” as a guarantee that your card will work. Wallet eligibility depends on the watch hardware and software, the country or region, the card issuer and device security requirements. Confirm the exact combination before relying on the feature.

Compare case dimensions and how the watch sits on your wrist, especially if you plan to wear it overnight or during exercise. If you want another band, confirm its compatibility with the exact generation and case size; materials can differ in sweat and water resistance. Google’s Pixel Watch technical and device specifications list band compatibility and materials.

Do not assume a charger will work across watch brands—or even across every generation in one brand’s range. Match a replacement charging dock to the precise watch family and model. Samsung lists compatible charging options in its Galaxy Watch charging guidance.
