Choose a smart lock with a built-in camera only after confirming three things: it fits your door, the lens has a useful view of visitors, and you understand exactly where recordings are stored. Then check battery fallback, network compatibility, installation requirements, weather protection, and the total cost of any required hub, memory card, or subscription.
An integrated lock-camera can reduce the number of devices at your entrance, but it is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated video doorbell. Camera position, lighting, storage rules, and offline access vary by model. Use the checklist below to evaluate the exact version sold in your region rather than relying on a product category label.

1. Start with the door, not the app
A lock that cannot be installed correctly is disqualified, regardless of its camera resolution or smart-home features. Before comparing models, record the measurements and conditions of your actual entrance.

Measure the existing lock and deadbolt
- Measure the backset from the edge of the door to the center of the deadbolt.
- Check the spacing between the deadbolt and any lower lock or handle.
- Measure door thickness and note whether the door has a narrow stile, decorative trim, glass, or an unusually deep frame.
- Identify the handing: viewed from outside, does the door hinge on the left or right, and does it swing inward or outward?
- Check whether the model replaces only the interior thumb-turn or requires changes to the exterior cylinder and strike.
Do not assume that “standard” means universal. The manufacturer describes the eufy Video Smart Lock E330 (T8531) as fitting most standard US and Canadian deadbolt spacings, but that is a model-specific statement. Its user guide also warns that a storm door can block the camera. Confirm your dimensions and the exact regional variant in the E330/E330 with Chime user guide before ordering.

Check the camera’s physical line of sight
Stand where a visitor would stand and look at the proposed lens height. A porch roof, storm door, wall, railing, mailbox, or the open door itself can hide faces or packages. If the lock is mounted unusually low or high, a stated field of view may still miss the approach. Sketch the area the camera must cover: the visitor’s face, the threshold, and the location where deliveries are normally placed.
Verify clearance and installation access
Confirm that the interior housing will not hit a window, screen, adjacent door, or handle. Check whether you can reach the inside of the door with it open and whether the frame accepts the supplied strike. In an apartment or rental, determine whether changing the cylinder, drilling, or replacing the strike is permitted.
2. Evaluate the camera as a security view
Read camera specifications as a starting point, not as proof that the lock will identify visitors at your entrance.
Field of view and composition
Look for the stated horizontal or diagonal field of view and compare it with the distance from the lock to the approach. A wide lens can include more of a porch but may make faces smaller. A narrow lens may show a clearer face directly in front of the door while missing a package placed to one side. The useful question is whether a person’s face and a delivery location appear at a practical size from the real mounting position.
Resolution and low-light behavior
Check the recorded resolution, frame rate if provided, infrared or other night illumination, and whether the manufacturer explains how night mode works. Ask whether the image is likely to be backlit by a porch light or bright outdoor background. A “2K” label alone does not establish identification quality, motion handling, or performance in rain and darkness.
Motion events and notifications
Find out what triggers recording, whether activity zones can be configured, and whether notifications include a preview or require opening the app. Determine if the camera records continuously, only on motion, or only when someone presses a doorbell button. Notification delay and recognition accuracy are not established by a resolution number, so treat them as model-specific capabilities to verify in current documentation.

Integrated camera versus a separate doorbell
An integrated camera places the view at the lock and can simplify wiring and mounting. A separate doorbell may offer a different height, angle, power source, or upgrade path. The available documentation does not establish that an integrated lock camera matches a dedicated doorbell camera in coverage, night performance, reliability, or notification speed. Choose based on the view your entrance needs, not on the number of devices.
3. Understand storage and privacy before you buy
“Local storage” can describe several different arrangements. Ask which component stores the original video, where event thumbnails are processed, and what happens when the network is unavailable.
Questions to ask about recordings
- Is storage built into the lock, a chime or hub, a removable card, or a cloud account?
- Is a subscription required for recording, playback, person detection, longer retention, or downloads?
- Does the device continue recording when the internet is down, and can you review that footage locally?
- How are files deleted when storage fills, and can you export important clips?
- Which household members can view clips or unlock the door, and how are accounts protected?
How the E330 storage arrangement works
For the eufy Video Smart Lock E330, the official guide covering the T8531 lock and E8531 chime states that the lock has 8 GB of built-in local storage. The chime can record to a microSD card, but the card is not included. The product page describes local storage without subscription fees; it also says thumbnail previews are temporarily stored in the cloud. Read those details together: local recording does not mean that every image or app function stays on the lock.
Use the E330 product page and the official guide to confirm the bundle you are buying, the recording path, card compatibility, retention behavior, and current privacy controls.
Privacy checks for any brand
Review the account permissions, two-factor authentication options, encryption statements, and procedures for deleting clips and removing a former household member. Place the camera so it observes only the approach you need; avoid pointing it into a neighbor’s window or a shared interior area. If several people will unlock the door, use individual accounts or codes where supported instead of sharing one login.

4. Plan power and entry when technology fails
A camera-equipped lock combines a motor, wireless radio, keypad or reader, and camera. Battery planning therefore matters more than it does for a simple mechanical deadbolt.

Battery questions
- What battery type and capacity does the exact model use?
- Is the battery removable, and can it be charged while the lock remains installed?
- How does the lock warn you about low charge, and how much warning time is provided?
- Does heavy video use, cold weather, frequent unlocking, or weak Wi-Fi reduce runtime?
- Can you buy a spare battery or use an emergency power input?
eufy lists a 10,000 mAh rechargeable battery for the E330. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independently measured runtime. The same listing describes app, voice-assistant, keypad, and physical-key access. Verify which of those methods remain available if the battery is low, the Wi-Fi network is down, or the cloud service cannot be reached.
Keep a dependable fallback
Retain a physical key if the design provides one, and decide where it can be retrieved without creating an obvious security weakness. Test the emergency charging procedure before you need it. Confirm that a keypad code is stored locally and that unlocking does not depend entirely on a phone or internet connection. If the lock supports temporary codes, establish how they are revoked when a guest or contractor no longer needs access.
5. Check network and smart-home compatibility
Do not buy on the assumption that every smart lock works with your existing platform. Compatibility can differ by region, hardware revision, firmware, or bundle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfirm the basics
- Which Wi-Fi band or wireless protocol is required?
- Does setup require a particular phone operating-system version?
- Is a hub or chime required for remote viewing, notifications, or recording?
- Which voice assistants are supported, and can they lock only, or unlock as well?
- Does the lock integrate with your current automation platform, and which functions are exposed?
- What happens to local unlocking if the router, internet service, or manufacturer account is unavailable?
The E330 documentation describes app control and voice-assistant support, but you should check the current support page for your country and exact bundle. Do not infer Matter or another platform integration unless the model’s current documentation explicitly lists it. A lock that works with a phone app may still lack the automation triggers you use elsewhere.
6. Treat installation, certification, and weather ratings separately
Follow the exact manual
Download the installation guide before purchase and compare every step with your door. Look for required hole sizes, strike alignment, cable routing, calibration, and a door-open test. After installation, operate the lock with the door open first; then close the door and check that the bolt extends without rubbing. Misalignment increases motor load and can cause unreliable locking.
Understand what ratings do and do not prove
The E330 product page lists BHMA certification and IP65 water resistance. Certification scope and test conditions matter: a rating is not a complete assessment of resistance to forced entry, installation quality, or long-term exposure. Check the current documentation for the exact model and region, and protect the camera and lock from conditions outside those instructions.

Account for doors with unusual exposure
Wind-driven rain, direct sun, salt air, freezing temperatures, and a covered or uncovered porch can change maintenance needs. A storm door can physically obstruct the lens even when the lock itself fits. If your entrance is exposed, confirm how the manufacturer defines the weather rating and whether the warranty excludes particular installations.

8. Use this buying process
- Document your door. Record backset, thickness, deadbolt spacing, handing, swing direction, frame condition, and storm-door position.
- Download manuals for candidate models. Check required tools, hole sizes, strike dimensions, clearance, calibration, and regional variants before looking at promotional features.
- Map the camera view. From the planned mounting height, confirm that faces, the threshold, and delivery areas are visible without obstruction.
- Write down the recording path. Identify the device that stores original video, whether a hub or card is needed, retention limits, and any cloud-only previews or detection features.
- Plan failure access. Verify physical-key, keypad, emergency-power, and offline behavior. Decide how you will recharge the battery and recover from a lost phone.
- Check your network and platform. Confirm wireless requirements, app support, voice assistants, hubs, and automation compatibility for your country and phone.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include the lock, chime or hub, compatible memory card, spare battery, installation hardware, and any recurring plan required for features you actually want.
- Buy only after checking the return policy. A lock can meet every published specification and still be unsuitable if the camera is blocked or the bolt does not align with your frame.
9. Test the installation before relying on it
- Install the hardware with the door open and confirm that the bolt moves freely by hand where the instructions permit.
- Complete calibration in the manufacturer’s app and test locking and unlocking several times.
- Close the door and check alignment, rubbing, and whether the frame prevents full bolt extension.
- Stand at the normal visitor position in daylight and at night. Check face visibility, glare, rain drops, and the delivery area.
- Trigger a motion event or doorbell press and verify that the expected notification, preview, and recording appear.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi briefly and test the keypad, physical key, and any local controls.
- Simulate a low-battery condition according to the manual so every household member knows the warning and charging procedure.
- Review account permissions, remove installer access, enable available security protections, and record the firmware and model numbers for support.
10. Common problems and how to prevent them
The lens sees the door, not the visitor
Recheck mounting height and obstructions. A storm door or a narrow porch can make an integrated camera unsuitable even when the lock fits. If the view cannot be corrected without moving the lock, consider a separate camera position rather than accepting blind spots.
Remote control works, but local entry fails
Check battery charge, bolt alignment, keypad power, and whether the lock is waiting for calibration. Test with the door open, then inspect the strike for pressure or debris. Keep the mechanical key or emergency-power method available while diagnosing.
Storage is unexpectedly unavailable
Confirm whether the footage is stored in the lock or chime, whether a microSD card is required, and whether the card is compatible and formatted as instructed. Check retention settings and available capacity instead of assuming that “local” means unlimited recording.

Notifications arrive late or not at all
Verify Wi-Fi signal at the door, phone notification permissions, app account status, and motion-zone settings. A delayed alert may reflect network or cloud processing rather than a camera failure. The documentation available here does not establish a universal notification latency.
Voice commands create an unacceptable risk
Review whether voice unlocking is enabled, which authentication is required, and who can issue commands. If the platform cannot enforce the level of confirmation you need, leave voice unlocking disabled while retaining other access methods.
11. When a separate camera is the better choice
Choose a separate lock and camera when the door geometry prevents a clear lock-mounted view, when you need a higher or side-on angle, when the entrance has a storm door that blocks the lens, or when you want to replace the camera without replacing the lock. An integrated unit is more attractive when a single installation point, shared app, and fewer visible devices matter more than camera placement flexibility.
