A camera may accept a voice command and stream to a Nest Hub or Chromecast while offering no live view in the Google Home app. For the most complete Google experience, choose a current Nest Cam. For a lower-commitment third-party option, Tapo models can stream to compatible displays, but their live feed remains outside the Google Home app.
This guide compares the current Google and TP-Link options by viewing surface, integration depth, power, resolution, recording, privacy and stream limits. Specifications and subscription terms are manufacturer-published; availability and prices can change by country, firmware and date.

What “works with Google Assistant” actually means
Google-compatible cameras do not all expose the same features. Before buying, identify the exact screen or app you intend to use:
- Google Home app: Some cameras provide live view and, with newer integrations, event history and other controls directly in the app.
- Nest display: A compatible camera can be called up with a voice request on a Nest Hub or similar display.
- Chromecast-enabled TV: Google and TP-Link document streaming supported camera feeds to a television with Chromecast.
- Manufacturer app: Every model retains its maker’s app for setup and any features that Google does not expose.
Google’s help documentation describes linking compatible camera makers through Google Home and sending a feed to a Nest display. TP-Link’s setup documentation makes an important distinction: Tapo video can stream to a Nest or Chromecast device, but Tapo camera live view is not supported in the Google Home app. A “Google Assistant compatible” badge therefore does not prove that a camera appears in the Home app.
#1 Best Overall
- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
- Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)
Controls differ too. TP-Link says Tapo and Kasa cameras do not accept Google Assistant’s camera on/off voice command for security reasons. Google documents Nest camera controls separately. Treat voice-launched viewing, app viewing and camera power control as three different compatibility checks.
Quick comparison of the current choices
| Model | Power and placement | Manufacturer-listed video | Confirmed Google destinations | Recording and storage | Important limitation |

| TP-Link Tapo C120 | Indoor or outdoor, wired | 2K QHD; IP66 weatherproofing | Tapo app; Google Home compatibility listed by TP-Link | Storage and history terms depend on the Tapo service and region | Apply TP-Link’s general Google limitations unless current firmware says otherwise |
| Walmart onn Indoor Camera Wired | Wired indoor | Up to 1080p live view; intelligent alerts announced by Google | Intended for Google’s newer camera-partner platform | Full current storage terms not established in the announcement | Availability and specifications should be verified before purchase |
| Walmart onn Video Doorbell Wired | Wired doorbell | Up to 1080p live view; intelligent alerts announced by Google | Intended for Google’s newer camera-partner platform | Full current storage terms not established in the announcement | Announcement-stage product details may differ by market |
The table separates viewing destination from integration depth. It does not rank image quality or reliability because no independent hands-on test supports those claims.
Best Google-native fit: Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen)
For an indoor camera intended to live primarily in Google Home, the wired third-generation Nest Cam Indoor is the straightforward choice. Google’s current US Store comparison lists 2K HDR video, a 152° diagonal field of view and built-in alerts for people, animals and vehicles. Its wired design avoids charging interruptions, but installation must include a nearby outlet and a cable route that cannot be easily unplugged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google lists six hours of event video previews for its wired camera models. That is an included preview allowance, not unlimited recording. Google Home Premium can extend event history to 30 or 60 days depending on the plan, subject to the terms shown for your account and country.
When it fits
- You want the Google-native indoor model rather than a maker app plus display casting.
- A permanent power outlet is practical.
- You value the wider 152° field of view and 2K HDR specification listed by Google.
What to verify
- Whether the exact third-generation model is sold in your region.
- Current Google Home app and firmware requirements.
- Whether six hours of event previews is enough without a Premium subscription.
Best fixed outdoor option: Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen)
Google’s current comparison lists the Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) at 2K HDR with a 152° diagonal field of view. It is designed for a permanent outdoor position, so plan the cable path, weather protection for the power connection and a mounting surface before ordering. Google also lists person, animal and vehicle alerts for this model.
The recording allowance follows Google’s wired-camera terms: six hours of event video previews are included, while Google Home Premium provides longer event history. A wired outdoor camera is preferable when a high, difficult-to-reach position would make battery charging inconvenient.
Choose it when
- The camera will remain in one outdoor location for most of its life.
- You can provide continuous power safely and in accordance with local electrical requirements.
- You want the wider field of view and higher listed resolution of Google’s wired models.
Best flexible placement: Nest Cam (battery)
The battery Nest Cam is Google’s indoor/outdoor placement option. Google lists 1080p HDR video, a 130° diagonal field of view and three hours of event-based history included. Its lower listed resolution and narrower field of view than the wired models are the trade-offs for mounting without a permanent cable.

Battery cameras make sense for rental properties, temporary monitoring, locations without a convenient outlet and installations where drilling or cable routing is undesirable. Remember that cold weather, frequent motion events and a high mounting position can increase charging frequency. Check the manufacturer’s current operating and charging guidance for your climate.
Choose the battery model when
- Placement flexibility matters more than 2K HDR and the 152° view listed for wired Nest cameras.
- You can remove the camera safely for charging or have an approved power arrangement.
- Three hours of included event history meets your needs, or you have budgeted for Google Home Premium.
Third-party display-streaming alternative: TP-Link Tapo C125
TP-Link describes the Tapo C125 as a 2K QHD indoor camera with a 140° diagonal field of view, two-way audio and a physical privacy shutter. It supports local microSD recording up to 512 GB and offers optional cloud storage through TP-Link’s subscription service. TP-Link lists Google Assistant, Alexa and Apple HomeKit among its integrations.
The privacy shutter is a useful physical control when you want the lens blocked rather than merely disabled in software. Local microSD recording can reduce dependence on cloud history, but you must supply the card and manage its condition and capacity.
Its Google limitation
TP-Link’s Google Home setup guide says Tapo video can be streamed to a Nest display or Chromecast-enabled device, but Tapo live view is not supported in the Google Home app. The Tapo app remains the control surface for setup and camera viewing. This makes the C125 a display-streaming alternative, not a full Google Home app replacement.
Indoor/outdoor alternative: TP-Link Tapo C120
TP-Link’s 2025 product guide identifies the Tapo C120 as a 2K QHD indoor/outdoor camera with IP66 weatherproofing and a Google Home compatibility badge. The guide establishes its weather resistance and resolution, but it does not provide the same complete storage and viewing details as the C125 page.
Use the C120 when you need one camera design that can move between indoor and outdoor positions and you are comfortable operating it through the Tapo app while sending occasional streams to a Nest display or Chromecast. Confirm the regional model number, power arrangement, storage options and current firmware before purchase.
What Google Home Premium changes
Google’s US Store page observed on October 13, 2026 lists two Google Home Premium plans. Standard is listed at $10 per month or $100 per year and includes 30 days of event history. Advanced is listed at $20 per month or $200 per year and includes 60 days of event history plus up to 10 days of continuous video history. These are US prices and can change; check the current Google Store terms before subscribing.

| Tapo cloud storage | Optional subscription | Plan terms vary by region and should be checked in the Tapo app |
Do not compare a Nest history allowance directly with a Tapo microSD capacity as if they were the same service. One is cloud event history measured in time; the other is local storage measured in gigabytes.
How long Google Assistant camera streams stay open
Automatic stream limits matter if you use a display as a monitor. Google says streams from Nest battery cameras and doorbells to displays stop after five minutes. Wired Nest camera streams can remain for up to 12 hours. TP-Link says Tapo and Kasa Assistant streams stop after 10 minutes and can be restarted with another request. TP-Link’s support documentation states: “The camera live feed streamed via Google Assistant stops automatically after 10 minutes.”
These limits are expected behavior, not necessarily a connectivity failure. If a feed ends, ask Google to show the camera again. For continuous monitoring, use the maker’s app or a purpose-built viewing setup rather than relying on a voice-launched display stream.
How to link a camera and stream it to a display
- Install the maker’s app and camera first. Complete account creation, firmware updates and Wi-Fi setup in the Google, Tapo or other manufacturer app.
- Open Google Home. Use the add-device flow to link the compatible camera service. The exact labels can vary by app version and country.
- Assign the camera to a home and room. Use a short, unique name such as “porch” or “nursery” so voice recognition is less ambiguous.
- Check the destination before testing. Confirm that your Nest display or Chromecast-enabled TV is signed into the same Google account or home.
- Ask Google to show the camera. Use a natural request such as “Hey Google, show the porch camera on the kitchen display.” Camera names and command wording may vary.
- Test the app separately. If the stream works on a Nest display but the camera does not appear in Google Home, that can be an integration limitation rather than a failed setup. This is the documented behavior for Tapo live view.
Privacy, security and physical installation
The Tapo C125 has a physical privacy shutter, which is useful for indoor rooms where software controls are not enough. For any wired model, inspect the full cable path before mounting: the outlet must remain accessible, the connector must be protected from moisture outdoors and the cable should not create a trip or tampering hazard.
Google says Nest Cam video uses encryption and two-step verification, and that a green LED indicates when the camera is processing or streaming. Those are Google’s product claims, not an independent security certification. Use a unique account password, enable two-step verification and keep camera firmware current regardless of brand.
Google’s newer camera-partner platform
Google’s developer announcement describes a camera-maker program using an embedded software development kit for deeper integration of live view, event history and Google’s camera-intelligence features. Google contrasts these devices with earlier Works with Google Home cameras that may provide only live view.
The announcement names Walmart’s onn Indoor Camera Wired and onn Video Doorbell Wired as the first partner products, with up to 1080p live view and intelligent alerts. Because this information comes from an announcement rather than a checked, current retail catalog, treat both as emerging choices. Verify that the exact model is available in your country and confirm storage, subscription, app support, power and installation details before relying on it for security coverage.

Decision guide by room and priority
Indoor room where Google Home is the main interface
Start with the Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen). It is the clearest Google-native fit and carries Google’s listed 2K HDR and 152° field of view. Choose the Tapo C125 instead if a physical privacy shutter or local microSD recording is more important than live view in the Google Home app.
Outdoor area with an available power connection
The Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) is the Google-native fixed outdoor choice at the listed 2K HDR and 152° view. The Tapo C120 is an alternative when IP66 weatherproofing and 2K QHD matter, provided you accept the Tapo app and display-streaming workflow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Choose the battery Nest Cam for indoor or outdoor placement. Budget time for charging and accept the listed 1080p HDR, 130° view and three-hour included event history.
Display streaming is enough; app integration is not essential
The Tapo C125 or C120 can fit if you primarily want to ask Google to show a feed on a Nest display or Chromecast device. Do not buy either expecting Tapo live view inside Google Home.
Troubleshooting common problems
The camera streams to a Nest display but is missing from Google Home
Check the manufacturer’s support statement first. For Tapo cameras, this is documented behavior: display streaming is supported, while live view in Google Home is not. Use the Tapo app for direct viewing and settings.
Google cannot find the camera by name
Rename it with a short phrase, confirm it is assigned to the same Google Home, relink the maker account and verify that the display uses the intended Google account. Avoid duplicate names such as “camera” and “camera 2” in different rooms.

The stream stops after a few minutes
Check which product you own. Tapo and Kasa Assistant streams stop after 10 minutes; Nest battery-camera and doorbell streams stop after five minutes; wired Nest streams can stop after 12 hours. Restart the stream with another voice request.
A voice command to turn the camera off fails
TP-Link says Tapo and Kasa cameras do not support Google Assistant camera on/off commands for security reasons. Use the Tapo app or the C125’s physical privacy shutter where applicable. Do not assume a Nest command will work on a third-party camera.
Recorded events are unavailable
Check whether you are looking at included preview history, a Google Home Premium plan, Tapo local microSD footage or Tapo cloud storage. These are separate systems with different retention rules. Confirm the card is compatible and initialized if using local recording.
