Some are simple reversible fleece throws; outdoor designs may add flannel or insulation.
What “sherpa” means on a blanket
Sherpa describes a plush, fleece-like surface, not one standard blanket construction. A couch throw may pair a velvety polyester face with a sherpa reverse, while an outdoor blanket can combine cotton flannel on one side and polyester sherpa fleece on the other. Check the materials listed for each side before buying.

For example, Good Housekeeping’s throw guide, updated March 4, 2025, describes a reversible polyester throw with a velvety face and sherpa reverse. REI’s Wallace Lake Sherpa Fleece Blanket pairs organic cotton flannel with polyester sherpa fleece.
Choose a blanket for its intended use
For a couch or an extra bed layer
A sherpa fleece throw blanket can work as a couch layer or an extra layer on a bed. Compare the blanket’s dimensions with the person who will use it and the furniture or bed it needs to cover. “Throw” alone does not guarantee a particular size.

For travel or outdoor use
Look for construction and care details that suit the setting, not just a plush backing. REI lists the Wallace Lake blanket at 70 by 54 inches. Its Rumpl Sherpa Puffy Blanket is described as having synthetic insulation and a sherpa fleece backing. REI’s pages said both products were unavailable when accessed, so those listings illustrate design differences, not current purchase options.
Compare the details that affect comfort and upkeep
- Dimensions: Check the listed measurements against the couch, bed, or travel use you have in mind.
- Materials on both sides: Identify the face fabric, sherpa backing, and any insulation. Do not assume all plush-backed blankets use the same fibers.
- Weight: If GSM (grams per square metre) is not stated, weight can serve as a general comparison cue. Good Housekeeping’s blanket buying guidance says heavier blankets are better suited to colder months; this is not a precise warmth rating.
- Care label: Instructions vary by product. The Good Housekeeping throw listing says machine wash and dry; REI says the Wallace Lake blanket can be hand- or machine-washed. Follow the specific blanket’s label, especially for drying.
- Appearance with use: Plush texture does not guarantee that a blanket will stay smooth. Good Housekeeping reports that the sherpa side of the throw it discusses showed some pilling and excess fuzziness after extensive use.
What published product evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Good Housekeeping’s coverage of the polyester reversible throw reports tester feedback on softness, comfort, and wash performance, alongside the pilling and fuzziness noted after extensive use. That is editorial product testing reported by the publication, not a guarantee of how another blanket—or every owner’s blanket—will perform.
