How to Choose a Secure Robot Lawn Mower: Network, App, and Update Features to Check

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

A secure robot lawn mower is not defined by one badge or a claimed number of years. Choose a model whose network dependencies, pairing controls, update process, support dates, and data practices you can verify for your exact model and country. Before paying, document which radios it uses, whether mowing works without cloud access, how the owner account is protected, how firmware is authenticated and installed, and when security support ends.

Manufacturers publish most of the available information, so treat their statements as declarations to verify rather than independent security audits. The checklist below lets you compare models on the same evidence.

What “secure” should mean for a robot mower

A connected mower can expose several control paths: Bluetooth during setup, Wi-Fi at the charging station, a cellular modem on some models, a phone app, and the manufacturer’s cloud service. A weakness in any one of these paths could affect location data, schedules, navigation information, or commands. Security is therefore a lifecycle question, not just a question about the radio in the mower.

Start by defining your own risk. A mower in a fenced suburban garden has different consequences from one operating on a shared property, beside a public footpath, or where children and pets are present. Decide whether you need only local scheduling, remote status, theft alerts, or control while away. Every internet-dependent feature adds another service and account that must remain available and protected.

(Includes 2 rolls of trimming line, each covering approximately 3km of edging.)
  • High-Power 32V Platform for Thick Grass - Designed for American lawns with Bermuda, Zoysia, Fescue, and St. Augustine grass. The 32V motor and dual-blade disc system provide stronger cutting torque and faster blade rotation, helping this robotic mower handle dense, fast-growing grass and uneven terrain.*Compared to previous GOAT models, based on ECOVACS lab testing.
  • Fast Charging Robotic Mower for Medium to Large Yards - Equipped with a durable 3.0Ah battery and 113.4W fast charging, this robot lawn mower recharges in about 50 minutes. Ideal for homeowners looking for automated lawn care with minimal downtime and consistent scheduled mowing performance.
  • Smart App-Controlled Lawn Mower with Custom Zones - Control your smart lawn mower through the ECOVACS app. Create multiple mowing zones, set no-go areas, adjust cutting height and speed, define travel paths between zones, and customize mowing schedules. Designed for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care.
  • Control: Can an unauthorized person start, stop, locate, or reconfigure the mower?
  • Privacy: Does the app collect precise location, garden maps, photographs, audio, or diagnostic data?
  • Availability: Will mowing and safety routines continue if Wi-Fi, cellular service, or the cloud is unavailable?
  • Maintenance: Will the maker deliver and install security fixes for the useful life you expect?

No industry-wide incident rate establishes how often robot mowers are hacked. Evaluate the documented controls and the manufacturer’s support commitment for the specific product instead of assuming a category-wide risk level.

1. Map every connection and what it controls

Product listings often say “app control” without explaining which functions need an internet connection. Obtain the owner’s manual or support page for the exact model and write down each radio, service, and dependency.

Bluetooth for setup and nearby control

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is commonly used to pair a phone with a mower at close range. Ask whether BLE remains enabled after setup, whether a physical button or PIN is required for a new pairing, and whether a stranger standing near the mower could claim it. Husqvarna says its Automower models use BLE encryption and require a PIN to establish a connection; those are the manufacturer’s statements and should be checked against the model’s manual (Husqvarna connection security answer).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi-only models

Some mowers reach the cloud only through Wi-Fi at the charging station. A weak signal can prevent remote commands and firmware downloads even when the mower itself is working. Husqvarna says Wi-Fi-only models need a strong connection at the charging station and that some models check for updates weekly (Husqvarna Wi-Fi and FOTA guide). Confirm the required band, supported encryption, maximum distance to the router, and whether the mower continues its programmed schedule offline.

Wi-Fi plus cellular models

A cellular modem can preserve remote access when home Wi-Fi is unavailable, but it introduces a subscription, carrier coverage, and another service account. Ask who pays for connectivity, what happens when the included period ends, which countries are supported, and whether the mower falls back to local operation when the modem cannot connect.

Cloud and app dependencies

Find out which actions are local and which pass through a cloud service. A mower may continue a stored schedule without internet while geofencing changes, map edits, theft alerts, or firmware updates wait for cloud access. Ask whether there is a documented outage mode and whether you can export or recover schedules if the service is discontinued.

Connection or service Questions to document Possible consequence of losing it
Bluetooth Is pairing protected by a PIN, button press, or account authorization? Can BLE be disabled? New pairing or local control may fail; existing schedule may still run.
Charging-station Wi-Fi Which bands and security modes are supported? Does the mower need to be docked? Remote commands and Wi-Fi firmware downloads may stop.
Cellular Which network, territory, subscription, and end-of-service rules apply? Remote access and alerts may stop outside coverage or after service expiry.
Cloud account What functions require the vendor’s servers? Is there an offline or local-control mode? Maps, schedules, notifications, or commands may be unavailable during an outage.

Husqvarna’s security documentation distinguishes models with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile connectivity and gives model-specific examples (Husqvarna security documentation). Do not generalize the capability of one model to the rest of a product family.

2. Check pairing, PINs, passwords, and account recovery

Secure connectivity starts at first setup. Before buying, locate the setup guide and look for the following controls.

Change any factory credential immediately

Husqvarna states: “The factory PIN code is 1234 on all mowers produced 2024 or later.” Change that code during setup and record it in a password manager rather than on a label attached to the mower (Husqvarna security documentation). A statement about one manufacturer does not establish the default for another brand or an older model; verify the serial-number range and production date.

Separate mower access from the owner account

Determine whether the app requires a unique online account, a strong password, and multi-factor authentication (MFA). Check how additional household users are invited and removed, whether permissions can be limited to viewing status, and whether a lost phone can be revoked remotely. If MFA is unavailable, use a unique long password and protect the email account used for recovery with MFA.

Verify pairing boundaries

Ask whether pairing requires pressing a button on the mower or entering a code shown on its display. A physical confirmation prevents someone nearby from silently claiming an unpaired device. Also ask whether a mower can remain linked to a previous owner after resale and what the factory-reset process removes.

Protect the home network

Place the mower or charging station on a guest or Internet-of-Things network when practical. Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a unique Wi-Fi password, disable universal plug-and-play on the router if you do not need it, and keep the router firmware current. Husqvarna describes WPA2/WPA3 Wi-Fi and recommends a private network in its security material; treat that as guidance for its products, not a guarantee for every mower (Husqvarna security documentation).

3. Examine how firmware updates are delivered

Updates are the mechanism that turns a published vulnerability into a fix. A useful product page should explain who initiates the update, what connection is required, how installation is confirmed, and how the package’s authenticity is checked.

Automatic checks and installation conditions

Husqvarna says some models check weekly, download updates automatically when available, and typically download while parked. Wi-Fi-only models need strong Wi-Fi at the charging station; app notifications report available and installed updates (Husqvarna firmware update guide; Husqvarna Wi-Fi and FOTA guide). Ask whether installation pauses mowing, requires a minimum battery level, or can be postponed. A mower that is routinely stored offline may miss an automatic update unless the owner deliberately docks and connects it.

Authenticity and rollback protection

Look for plain-language information about signed firmware, encrypted transport, verification before installation, and recovery if an update fails. “Encrypted download” alone does not explain whether the mower verifies that the package came from the manufacturer. TerraMow says its update channels are verified and use TLS 1.2 or higher; this is a TerraMow claim, not an independent certification. Ask the maker whether a failed update leaves the mower usable and whether older vulnerable firmware can be blocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Owner visibility

The app should show the current firmware version, the date of the last successful update, and any failed attempt. If it only says “up to date,” ask how to obtain a version history or release notes. Keep screenshots or exported records when you set up a mower for a shared property so another caretaker can verify its patch status.

4. Compare the security-support promise by date, scope, and region

“Three years of support” is not a universal measure. One maker may count from manufacture, another from public launch, and a policy may apply only to named models in one market. Record the start date, end date, covered software, and territory in your comparison sheet.

Manufacturer policy Published commitment How the period starts or is limited
Husqvarna At least 3 years of security updates for Automower models that support FOTA. Counts from the manufacturing date; manufacturer statement checked in 2026. Confirm that the exact model is FOTA-capable. Policy details
Roborock Minimum 2 years of software security updates for lawn mowers. UK policy lists model launch and end dates and warns that timing can vary by model and region. Do not apply those dates to another country. UK policy
EGO Three-year periods for the named UK-market mower models, including RMR models listed from 1 February 2026 to 30 January 2029. Scope is explicitly the UK market; dates are model-specific and are a manufacturer statement. UK-market policy
TerraMow At least 3 years of software-security-update support. Starts from the product’s official launch or market-release date; the maker provides a model table for specific dates. Product Security page

Use the shortest applicable date when planning ownership. If a policy does not state whether fixes include the app, cloud backend, cellular modem, and mower firmware, ask for that scope in writing. A support period is a commitment to provide fixes, not proof that no vulnerability exists during the period.

5. Read the privacy policy before creating an account

A mower can generate a detailed map of your property even when its cutting function seems simple. Read the privacy policy for the exact mower, app, and region before scanning a QR code or accepting terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Data collected: Look for precise location, boundary maps, images from cameras, audio, device identifiers, diagnostics, usage schedules, and contact details.
  • Transmission: Identify what leaves the mower, when it is uploaded, whether data is encrypted in transit, and whether processing occurs in your country or another jurisdiction.
  • Sharing: Check disclosures about service providers, analytics companies, affiliates, dealers, law-enforcement requests, and sale or transfer of a business.
  • Retention: Find deletion periods for maps, images, logs, and inactive accounts. Ask what remains in backups after deletion.
  • User controls: Confirm whether location sharing, camera uploads, diagnostics, or marketing can be disabled independently of essential operation.
  • Account closure: Verify how to delete the account, erase the mower from the cloud, and transfer ownership when selling.

Mower-specific privacy disclosures are not uniform enough to infer one model’s practice from another. Save a copy of the policy and note its effective date; app permissions can change through updates.

6. Treat certifications and security ratings as evidence to investigate

A certification can be useful when it identifies the exact product, software version, requirements, test date, and certifier. It is not a blanket guarantee that the mower is risk-free. Ask for the certificate or conformity statement, the scope of testing, unresolved findings, and the renewal or expiry date. A badge that applies only to a phone app, a factory process, or a different product should not be presented as certification of the mower.

Also distinguish a security-management certification for the manufacturer from a technical assessment of the mower. If a vendor cites a standard such as ETSI EN 303 645, verify that the cited model is in scope and that the document is current for your region.

7. Build a side-by-side buying worksheet

Fill this table from the model’s manual, support pages, privacy policy, and sales terms. “Not stated” is a useful result: it tells you to ask before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy controls and deletion Documented controls Documented controls Current privacy policy

Do not award a model a higher score merely because its page uses stronger marketing language. Award points for specific, dated, model-level documentation that you can keep.

8. Set up the mower securely

  1. Verify the model and region. Match the serial number, hardware revision, app name, and country to the documentation you used when buying.
  2. Update the router first. Install current router firmware, use WPA2 or WPA3, and create a separate network with a unique password.
  3. Install the official app. Use the vendor’s published app store listing, enable MFA on the account and its recovery email, and reject permissions unrelated to the mower’s documented functions.
  4. Pair locally. Stand beside the mower, press any required physical pairing button, and use the setup PIN or code. Do not accept a pairing request you did not initiate.
  5. Replace defaults. Change the mower PIN, app password, and any default Wi-Fi credentials. Store them in a password manager.
  6. Apply pending firmware. Dock the mower, provide the required Wi-Fi or cellular connection, and wait for the app to show a successful version change. Do not remove power during installation.
  7. Limit users. Invite only the people who need access, choose the least-privileged role available, and remove the installer’s account after commissioning.
  8. Test offline behavior. Temporarily block internet access and verify what still works: scheduled mowing, emergency stop, local Bluetooth control, map viewing, and alerts. Restore connectivity afterward and confirm that updates and logs synchronize.
  9. Record recovery details. Save the reset procedure, current firmware version, support end date, privacy-policy date, and account owner. Keep these records with the property’s maintenance information.

9. Troubleshoot common security and connectivity failures

The mower will not pair

  • Stand within the documented Bluetooth range and turn off an old owner’s phone connection.
  • Confirm that the mower is not already bound to another account; use the manufacturer’s ownership-transfer or factory-reset procedure.
  • Check that the PIN has not been changed by another administrator, then contact support rather than repeatedly guessing.

Updates never appear

  • Dock the mower where the charging station has a strong, supported Wi-Fi signal.
  • Check the app’s model and region, battery level, schedule, and notification settings.
  • Look for a release-note page or support bulletin; some updates are staged and may not arrive to every device at once.
  • Do not install firmware files from forums or third-party download sites unless the maker explicitly provides and authenticates that process.

Remote control fails but local mowing works

Check the router’s internet connection, cloud-service status, cellular coverage, and account session. If the mower follows its stored schedule, this is an availability problem rather than evidence that its local controls are compromised. Document the outage and ask the manufacturer how long offline operation is designed to continue.

You are selling or handing over the mower

Remove additional users, delete maps and schedules where the app permits, perform the documented factory reset, cancel cellular service, and obtain confirmation that the device is unlinked from your cloud account. The buyer should create a new account and change every credential.

Questions to ask before purchase

  • Which exact radios are installed, and which functions stop when the internet or cloud is unavailable?
  • Does setup require a physical action and a unique PIN? What is the factory default, and how is it changed?
  • Is MFA available for the owner account and for invited users?
  • How often does the mower check for firmware, what connection and battery state are required, and how is a successful installation shown?
  • How are firmware packages authenticated, and what recovery exists after a failed update?
  • What is the security-support start date and end date for this model, hardware revision, and country?
  • Does support cover mower firmware, app software, cloud services, and cellular components?
  • What location, map, image, audio, and diagnostic data is collected, where is it processed, how long is it retained, and how can it be deleted?
  • Can I operate the mower locally and recover schedules if your service is discontinued?
  • Which certification or assessment covers this exact product, version, and market?

Final pre-purchase checklist

  • Connectivity and offline behavior are documented for the exact model.
  • Pairing requires a deliberate local action, and all default credentials can be changed.
  • The account supports MFA or can otherwise be protected with a unique password and secure recovery email.
  • Updates have a stated trigger, installation condition, authenticity check, and owner notification.
  • The support policy gives a dated, region-specific period with a clear starting point.
  • The privacy policy names data collection, sharing, retention, and deletion controls.
  • Any certification identifies the product, scope, date, and certifier rather than displaying an unexplained badge.
  • You have saved the manuals, policy URLs, firmware version, reset procedure, and support end date.
