How to Choose a Secure Platform for Sharing Machine Learning Models

The secure choice depends on who should receive the model, where it may be reachable, how identities are managed, and what happens when someone loads the file. A public download, a private collaboration repository, and an internal cross-account registry have different security requirements.

Compare each candidate against six controls: visibility and authorization, identity lifecycle, network exposure, encryption and key management, artifact trust, and traceability. Hugging Face Hub and Amazon SageMaker Model Registry document useful controls for different workflows, but their feature lists are not an independent security ranking. Your configuration, plan, region, contracts, and loading process determine the actual risk.

Start with the sharing boundary

Write down the intended audience and the most damaging failure before comparing services. The same platform can be reasonable for one boundary and inappropriate for another if repositories, networks, roles, or artifact-loading practices are configured differently.

Sharing job Minimum controls to verify Typical fit
Public distribution Explicit public visibility, release versioning, provenance, license information, malware and unsafe-file scanning, and a safe loading format. A public model repository or download endpoint.
Private external collaboration Private repositories, individually scoped tokens or roles, MFA or SSO, collaborator offboarding, access review, encrypted transport, and audit evidence. A private Hub repository or an equivalent managed registry.
Internal sharing across cloud accounts Account-level roles, resource policies, private networking, customer-managed keys where required, approval workflow, lineage, and centralized audit logs. A managed model registry integrated with the organization’s cloud accounts.

Also classify the model and its metadata. A model can reveal training data, proprietary features, regulated information, or intellectual property even when the weights themselves look harmless. The repository may contain configuration files, tokenizer files, notebooks, containers, and serialized objects that deserve the same review as the main model file.

Use a security checklist, not a brand label

Visibility and authorization

Confirm whether the service supports private, organization-wide, public, and cross-account sharing separately. A login requirement alone does not make a resource private: an internet-facing endpoint with a valid account is still exposed to the public internet. Look for repository-level permissions, resource groups, role granularity, token scopes, expiration, and a process for removing a departing collaborator.

Hugging Face documents private repositories for models, datasets, and Spaces, along with access tokens, resource groups, MFA, and SSO options. These controls reduce accidental exposure only when the repository is private, tokens are narrowly scoped, and membership is reviewed. For an AWS registry, evaluate IAM users and roles, resource policies, and the separation between the role that publishes a model and the role that consumes it.

Identity lifecycle

Prefer SSO tied to the organization’s identity provider for human access, with MFA enforced by policy. Use short-lived or narrowly scoped machine credentials rather than a single shared token. Record who approved access, when it expires, and which resources it can read or write. Test offboarding: revoke a user’s group membership and any personal tokens, then verify that cached credentials and automation no longer work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A least-privilege design normally separates read, publish, approve, and deploy permissions. A developer may upload a candidate version without being able to approve it for production. A deployment role may read only approved versions in a release account. This separation is more useful than a generic claim that a service supports roles.

Network exposure

Determine whether model downloads and registry APIs travel over the public internet, through a private endpoint, or across an isolated virtual network. TLS protects traffic in transit, but it does not make a public endpoint equivalent to private connectivity. For sensitive workflows, verify endpoint policy, DNS routing, egress restrictions, firewall rules, and whether build or inference jobs can reach outside services.

AWS Security Hub guidance for SageMaker includes network isolation, placing notebooks in a custom VPC, using private registries for model containers, and enabling inter-container encryption for applicable jobs. These are configuration checks, not proof that a deployment satisfies a particular compliance program.

Encryption and key handling

Ask what is encrypted at rest, which key protects each storage location, and who can use or rotate that key. Include repository objects, temporary build storage, notebook volumes, logs, caches, backups, and cross-account copies. If customer-managed keys are required, verify that the service supports them for the exact artifact and region, and that the publishing and consuming roles have only the necessary key permissions.

AWS states that SageMaker model artifacts and other system artifacts are encrypted in transit and at rest and that API and console requests use SSL. Its documentation also discloses internal service traffic that is not encrypted in some control-plane and distributed-job communications. If your policy requires encryption for every in-network hop, identify the traffic used by your workflow and determine whether inter-container encryption or another isolation control is available.

Artifact trust and loading behavior

Scanning is a useful gate, not a guarantee that a model is safe. A model file can contain executable or deserialization behavior that activates when a framework loads it. Prefer formats and loading modes designed to avoid arbitrary code execution, pin the exact revision, and test the artifact in a restricted environment before deployment.

Hugging Face lists malware and pickle scanning, commit signatures, and third-party scanner integrations in its security documentation. Its security policy separately warns about the documented load-time risk of a malicious model, dataset, configuration, or pickle chosen by a user. That distinction matters: a platform’s ordinary API security does not remove the risk of voluntarily loading an untrusted artifact.

For every artifact, record the publisher, repository or package identifier, commit or package version, hash where available, scanner result, license, training-data statement, and approval decision. Reject a download whose revision changes unexpectedly, whose signature cannot be verified, or whose metadata is incomplete for your policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provenance, approvals, and audit

Security teams need to answer which source produced a deployed model, who approved it, what changed, and which environment received it. Look for immutable or signed revisions, model-version metadata, lineage from training data and code, approval states, and API audit logs. Retention and export options matter if logs must be kept in a central system.

AWS’s enterprise machine-learning architecture describes a central registry, versioned model packages, metadata, lineage, and CloudTrail audit trails in a multi-account design. Treat that as an architecture pattern to adapt, not a requirement that applies to every organization. A Hub workflow can provide commit history and signatures, but you may need additional systems for deployment approvals, data lineage, and centralized audit retention.

Compare the two common managed patterns

The following comparison describes documented controls and the work that remains yours. It does not rank either service as universally safest.

Decision axis Hugging Face Hub Amazon SageMaker Model Registry
Best fit Sharing model repositories with public, private, or selected collaborators. Managing versioned model packages inside AWS accounts and release workflows.
Access controls Private repositories, access tokens, resource groups, MFA, and SSO are documented features; verify the entitlement and configuration for your account. AWS IAM roles and policies, account boundaries, and resource-sharing controls; design separate publisher, approver, and deployment roles.
Cross-account sharing Use organization and collaborator controls documented for the repository; confirm how external guests are handled. AWS announced cross-account sharing through AWS Resource Access Manager on June 28, 2024. The announcement covered SageMaker Model Registry regions except GovCloud regions; check the current regional feature matrix before implementation.
Network model Repository access is generally an internet service; private visibility is not the same as a private network endpoint. Can be integrated with AWS VPC, private registries, and network-isolation controls, subject to the workflow and region.
Artifact safeguards Malware and pickle scanning, commit signatures, and named third-party scanner integrations are documented. Use private container registries, controlled build jobs, safe loading formats, and independent scanning as required by your pipeline.
Governance Repository history and organization controls help collaboration; deployment lineage and enterprise retention may require additional tooling. Model packages, lineage, approvals, and CloudTrail can fit a multi-account release process when configured.
Key caveat Private access and scanning do not prove that a model is harmless, correctly licensed, or safe to load. Encryption and IAM settings do not automatically provide private networking or encrypt every internal service path.

How to share a private model with collaborators on a Hub

Use this sequence when collaborators need repository access rather than a model deployment inside your cloud account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Classify the contents. Remove secrets, credentials, personal data, and unnecessary training artifacts. Document the model license and any restrictions on redistribution.
  2. Create a private model repository. Set visibility to private before uploading the first revision. Confirm that an unauthenticated browser session cannot list or download it.
  3. Choose the collaboration boundary. Use an organization or resource group when several people need controlled access. Avoid granting write access to everyone who only needs to download.
  4. Issue scoped credentials. Create separate access tokens for people and automation, grant only read or write permissions required for the task, and set expiration or rotation procedures. Never put a personal token in a notebook, container image, or source repository.
  5. Require strong sign-in. Enable MFA for individual accounts and SSO where the organization’s plan and identity setup support it. Test that a disabled identity cannot continue to access the repository.
  6. Protect the revision. Use signed commits where available, record the commit identifier and hash, and require a review before a version is promoted to deployment.
  7. Scan before loading. Review the platform’s malware and pickle results, add an approved external scanner if your policy requires one, and load the artifact in a sandbox with no unnecessary network or filesystem permissions.
  8. Record release evidence. Store the repository, revision, scanner result, license, approver, and deployment destination in your change record. Recheck permissions after the collaboration ends.

Private repository status controls who can fetch the files; it does not validate the model’s provenance or behavior. Treat a collaborator-uploaded update as untrusted until its exact revision passes the same review as an external download.

How to share models across AWS accounts

An AWS-centered workflow is appropriate when the model must move through controlled development, testing, and production accounts. The core design is a central registry with explicit consumers, rather than copying files into broad shared storage.

  1. Define account roles. Identify the training account, central model-management account, test accounts, and production account. Give each account only the publishing, approval, or consumption permissions it needs.
  2. Create versioned model packages. Store model metadata, source commit, training-data reference, evaluation evidence, container digest, and license with each version. Do not overwrite an approved version with a new file.
  3. Configure encryption. Select the required KMS keys for artifacts and associated storage, grant key use to the exact publishing and consuming roles, and test rotation and revocation in a nonproduction account.
  4. Share through the registry mechanism. SageMaker Model Registry cross-account sharing uses AWS Resource Access Manager according to the June 28, 2024 announcement. Confirm that the target regions and account types are supported now; do not assume GovCloud availability from the announcement.
  5. Apply consumer policies. Require the receiving account to accept only approved package versions. Use resource policies and IAM conditions to restrict who can read, approve, or deploy a package.
  6. Keep network paths private where required. Put notebooks and processing jobs in the approved VPC, use private endpoints or private registries where supported, restrict egress, and enable network isolation or inter-container encryption for applicable jobs.
  7. Capture audit trails. Enable CloudTrail and retain events for registration, sharing, permission changes, approval, and deployment. Send logs to a protected central destination so a compromised workload cannot erase its own evidence.
  8. Validate the release. Recalculate or verify the artifact digest, scan the container and model files, test loading in isolation, and compare the deployed version with the approved registry record.

AWS Marketplace documentation describes Marketplace SageMaker products running without network access in the buyer’s account and advises sellers to encrypt output artifacts. That statement applies to Marketplace product execution; it should not be generalized to every model that a customer creates or registers in SageMaker.

Decide whether you need supplementary scanning

Platform scanning is one layer in a defense-in-depth pipeline. Add another scanner when your threat model includes untrusted public uploads, many external contributors, regulated workloads, or frameworks with risky serialization formats. Hugging Face names Protect AI as a third-party scanner, and JFrog announced an integration in March 2025 intended to expose JFrog Xray and Advanced Security results for AI and machine-learning artifacts. Verify the current integration, supported formats, retention, and licensing before depending on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not turn a scanner result into a blanket trust decision. A clean result may not detect a backdoor implemented through model behavior, a license violation, poisoned training data, or a newly disclosed vulnerability. Combine scanning with provenance, code review, sandboxed loading, evaluation, and an approval gate.

  • Are private repositories, SSO, MFA, resource groups, signed commits, scanner integrations, and audit exports included in the exact plan?
  • Which regions support the registry, cross-account sharing, private endpoints, customer-managed keys, and required deployment services?
  • What data is retained, for how long, and where are backups and support copies stored?
  • Can the provider sign the organization’s required data-processing, confidentiality, or regulatory agreements?
  • Can access logs and version metadata be exported to the organization’s monitoring and retention system?
  • What happens to repositories, tokens, keys, and backups when an account or contract is closed?

Hugging Face’s security documentation points to enterprise terms for certain contractual requirements. AWS regional and service documentation should be checked for the exact account type and workflow rather than inferred from a general service page.

Common selection mistakes and how to correct them

Calling an authenticated public endpoint private

Symptom: Anyone on the internet can reach the login page or discover metadata, even though downloads require credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Decide whether internet exposure is acceptable. If not, use private connectivity, endpoint policies, network isolation, or a registry inside the approved network boundary.

Using one permanent token

Symptom: A token is embedded in scripts, shared by a team, or never expires.

Correction: Replace it with individual identities and short-lived, scoped automation credentials. Rotate and revoke the old token, then search logs and repositories for copies.

Trusting a scan without reviewing the loader

Symptom: A model passes malware scanning but executes unexpected code when deserialized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Prefer safer formats, pin revisions, disable unnecessary code execution, and load in a sandbox with restricted network, filesystem, and operating-system permissions.

Overwriting a released model

Symptom: The registry name is unchanged, so a deployment cannot prove which bytes it received.

Correction: Use immutable versions, hashes or digests, signed revisions where available, and an approval record that names the exact version.

Assuming encryption covers every path

Symptom: At-rest encryption is documented, but internal job or control-plane traffic is not covered by the organization’s policy.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Map each network path, read the provider’s exceptions, and enable inter-container encryption or other isolation controls where applicable.

Ignoring region and tier differences

Symptom: A feature works in a trial account or one region but is unavailable in production.

Correction: Test the production account, region, plan, and contract before migrating sensitive artifacts. Record the result as an acceptance criterion.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Choose the boundary: public, private collaboration, or internal cross-account governance.
  2. Set the failure tolerance: decide whether public metadata, internet exposure, untrusted loading, or cross-region storage is acceptable.
  3. Reject candidates missing a required control: private access, SSO or MFA, key management, safe loading, version immutability, or audit export.
  4. Map the workflow: upload, scan, approve, share, download, load, deploy, revoke, and audit. Check every handoff rather than evaluating only the repository.
  5. Run a small security test: attempt unauthorized access, revoke a credential, load a deliberately untrusted test artifact in a sandbox, inspect audit events, and verify the deployed digest.
  6. Document the operating procedure: name owners, rotation intervals, approval rules, incident contacts, retention, and the steps for deleting or quarantining a model.

The platform is only one component of that sequence. A service with extensive documented features can still be unsafe when repositories are public, roles are broad, keys are unmanaged, or artifacts are loaded directly on production workers.
