The safest choice is not the provider with the broadest security slogan. It is the service whose exact GPU model, virtual machine or bare-metal configuration, image, region, and data path are backed by evidence you can verify. Start by defining what must be protected, then require proof for confidential computing, attestation, keys, network isolation, tenant cleanup, audit scope, and the controls you will operate yourself.

Confidential GPU services can extend hardware-backed isolation to data while a workload is being processed, but support is configuration-specific. A provider may document one confidential H100 offering while ordinary GPU instances lack the same protection. Treat every claim as applying only to the SKU, image, driver combination, and location named in the evidence.

What a secure cloud GPU decision actually covers

A rented GPU runs code and data on infrastructure you do not physically control. Security therefore has several separate questions: can another tenant observe your workload, can a cloud operator or compromised host inspect it, can an attacker reach management interfaces, can residual data survive after release, and can you prove that the controls apply in your region and contract?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These questions concern different layers. Hardware-backed confidential computing addresses some threats to data in use. Encryption and key management protect stored data and traffic. Network boundaries reduce exposure. Sanitization limits what remains after a job or tenancy ends. Independent audits provide evidence about a defined service scope, not a blanket guarantee for every product. Your identity system, operating system image, drivers, application, permissions, logging, and deletion process remain part of the security outcome.

Define the workload before comparing vendors

Write down the data classification, regulatory obligations, expected GPU model, region, operating system, storage pattern, network dependencies, job duration, and whether operators must be prevented from seeing plaintext. A training job using public data has a different threat model from inference over medical records or proprietary model weights. The same provider may be suitable for one and unsuitable for the other.

  • Confidentiality target: Decide whether protection is needed at rest, in transit, during GPU processing, or at every stage.
  • Trust boundary: State whether the cloud host, hypervisor, platform administrators, support staff, or other tenants are inside or outside your trust model.
  • Availability needs: Record acceptable interruption, capacity reservations, and whether a confidential SKU can be obtained when needed.
  • Evidence threshold: Identify which claims require a contract, independent report, machine-verifiable attestation, configuration document, or operational procedure.

Confidential GPU computing: verify the boundary, not the label

Confidential computing uses a hardware-backed trusted execution environment (TEE) to isolate memory and execution from parts of the host stack. For a GPU workload, the important question is whether the TEE includes the attached GPU and its memory, rather than only the CPU portion of a virtual machine.

Google Cloud describes confidential GPUs as using hardware-based encryption and isolation for data processed on a GPU. Its Confidential VM material says NVIDIA Confidential Computing extends hardware-based TEE protection to attached NVIDIA GPUs. This is an architectural capability, not proof that every GPU service, image, or region offers it. Confirm the exact product documentation and current regional availability before committing a deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents the NCCadsH100v5-series as a confidential VM configuration using AMD 4th Gen EPYC processors with SEV-SNP and NVIDIA H100 GPUs. The documentation says the TEE spans the confidential VM and the attached GPU. It also identifies compatible operating-system images and capabilities such as secure mounting and attestation support. Do not generalize those properties to other GPU VM series; ask for the SKU, image, driver, and region that will be used.

Questions that establish the in-use protection boundary

  1. What is the exact commercial SKU or instance type, and which GPU model is attached?
  2. Does confidential protection cover GPU memory and GPU computation, or only CPU memory and the virtual machine?
  3. Which host firmware, hypervisor, driver, and container combinations are supported?
  4. Which operating-system images are qualified, and are custom images permitted?
  5. Does enabling confidential mode change available features, performance, networking, storage, live migration, or debugging?
  6. Which regions offer this exact combination today, and what happens if capacity is unavailable?

Use a common evidence matrix for every candidate

Record the answer for the selected configuration rather than accepting a general security page. A simple matrix prevents a strong claim in one domain from hiding a gap in another.

Control area Evidence to request Decision question
In-use confidentiality Product specification naming GPU, VM, image, drivers, and region; description of the TEE boundary Is the data protected while GPU code and memory are active?
Attestation and trust Attestation format, verifier documentation, signing-chain details, and deployment integration Can your workload verify that the expected hardware and firmware are running?
Storage and keys Encryption design for local and network storage; key ownership, issuance, rotation, access, and revocation procedures Who can use a decryption key, and how quickly can you revoke it?
Network isolation Tenant-boundary design, private management paths, firewall or filtering controls, and administrative access restrictions Can an unrelated tenant or exposed management endpoint reach the workload?
Data lifecycle Sanitization procedures for GPU memory, system memory, disks, and replacement hardware, with operational evidence What prevents residual data after release, termination, or hardware repair?
Audit scope Independent report or certification naming the service, facilities, dates, and control domains Does the assessed scope cover your product, region, and data obligations?
Shared responsibility Responsibility matrix and service terms listing customer and provider controls Which protections must your team configure, monitor, or prove?
Regional fit Current capacity and availability statement for the exact GPU, confidential mode, image, and network design Can you deploy and recover in the required geography?

Attestation: turn a trust claim into something your workload can check

GPU attestation can provide evidence that hardware and firmware are genuine and that a confidential environment is in an expected state. It is most useful when a workload verifies the evidence before releasing secrets, model weights, or sensitive input.

What to ask for

  • Evidence contents: Determine whether the report identifies the GPU, firmware measurements, confidential-VM state, image or launch measurements, and policy-relevant configuration.
  • Verification method: Ask for the verifier, certificate chain, signing keys, revocation process, and examples of failed verification.
  • Freshness: Learn how nonces, timestamps, or equivalent mechanisms prevent replay of an old valid report.
  • Deployment path: Confirm whether attestation is integrated into the provider’s launch workflow or whether your team must build and maintain the verifier.
  • Failure behavior: Require a documented response when firmware changes, certificates expire, a measurement differs, or the service cannot produce evidence.

Do not treat a provider’s statement that attestation exists as proof that your instance is attested. Verify that the selected GPU, image, region, and software stack expose evidence your application can validate, and test that validation before production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Encryption and key lifecycle: ask who can decrypt

Encryption at rest is only one control. A useful review covers local ephemeral disks, persistent disks, network file systems, object storage, snapshots, backups, and data exchanged with the GPU service. Ask whether temporary caches, crash dumps, logs, and support bundles can contain sensitive material.

Key-management questions

  • Who generates and owns the keys: your organization, the provider, or a managed service?
  • Can keys be held in a customer-controlled or external key-management system?
  • How are keys issued to a confidential workload, and is release conditional on successful attestation?
  • What are the rotation intervals, emergency-revocation steps, and recovery procedures?
  • Which provider personnel, services, or support processes can request key use, and what authorization and logging apply?
  • Are backups and snapshots encrypted under the same policy, and are deleted keys actually unrecoverable after retention periods?

NVIDIA’s AI cloud requirements call for key and certificate lifecycle protections and encryption at rest. Use those requirements as a question list, not as evidence that a particular cloud service implements every item. Obtain the provider’s technical description and contract language for the service you will buy.

Isolation and network access are separate from confidential memory

A TEE does not automatically make an internet-exposed machine safe. Configure private management paths where possible, restrict administrative interfaces, and define which subnets can reach storage, control planes, license servers, telemetry, and external APIs.

Inspect the network design

  1. Identify every interface attached to the GPU instance, including public addresses, private interfaces, service endpoints, and out-of-band management channels.
  2. List permitted inbound and outbound flows. Replace broad rules with workload-specific firewall or security-group policies.
  3. Separate tenant traffic from management traffic and confirm how the provider enforces that boundary.
  4. Determine whether provider support can attach diagnostic tools, access consoles, or capture memory, and what approval and logging controls exist.
  5. Test that a terminated instance’s addresses, credentials, tokens, and mounted volumes are removed from subsequent jobs.

NVIDIA’s requirements identify network isolation and filtering as expected controls. Ask for the implementation details and the default posture; a control that exists only after a customer enables it belongs in your operating checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data sanitization: demand a lifecycle story for GPU memory

GPU memory is easy to overlook because it is not always represented as a normal disk volume. Ask how device memory, host memory, local scratch space, attached disks, snapshots, and replacement hardware are cleared between tenants and after termination.

Evidence worth requesting

  • The reset or zeroization procedure executed when a GPU is released.
  • How failed jobs, crashes, reboots, and forced termination differ from normal shutdown.
  • How storage is sanitized before reassignment, decommissioning, repair, or recycling.
  • Retention and deletion rules for backups, logs, telemetry, support bundles, and snapshots.
  • Operational records, testing results, or independent control descriptions showing that the procedure is actually run.

If the provider cannot describe GPU-memory handling separately from disk deletion, treat that as an unanswered control rather than assuming ordinary storage sanitization covers it.

Audit reports and compliance: evaluate scope, not acronyms

A compliance name has meaning only inside its scope. Confirm the legal entity, service, facilities, regions, systems, control domains, audit period, and exceptions covered by an independent report. A report for a general compute platform may exclude a specialized GPU service or a data center you plan to use.

NVIDIA’s AI cloud requirements specify SOC 2 Type 1 or better across stated service and infrastructure scope. This is a vendor-published requirement for AI clouds, not a measured statistic and not proof that an individual provider meets it. Ask to see the provider’s current report and the bridge letter or updated assurance information when the report period does not cover your deployment date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the report to your obligations

  • For geographic requirements, verify that the exact region and backup locations are included.
  • For regulated data, check whether the relevant processing service and support operations are in scope.
  • For contractual controls, map each obligation to a named control, test result, and responsibility owner.
  • Review exceptions, complementary customer controls, and subservice organizations rather than reading only the opinion page.

Shared responsibility: write down what your team must do

Cloud security is divided. NVIDIA’s data-processing addendum states that customers must independently decide whether the described technical and organizational measures meet their requirements and remain responsible for measures on components they control. The same principle applies broadly: a provider can secure the physical host while your exposed credentials, unpatched image, permissive firewall, or undeleted object storage defeats the workload.

  • Base image provenance, operating-system updates, GPU drivers, container images, libraries, and secrets management.
  • Application authorization, tenant separation inside your software, input validation, and logging.
  • Network rules, private endpoints, egress restrictions, and monitoring of administrative actions.
  • Data retention, deletion requests, backup lifecycle, and verification that jobs leave no sensitive artifacts.
  • Attestation policy, key-release policy, incident response, and evidence retention for audits.

Obtain a responsibility matrix for the selected service and convert every customer item into an owner, configuration check, and recurring review. If the document says a control is shared, ask which party performs each specific action.

A practical selection process

Step 1: Create a configuration record

Record the exact GPU, instance or bare-metal SKU, CPU and TEE technology, image identifier, driver and container versions, storage types, network topology, region, backup location, and expected launch date. This record becomes the reference for every answer and test.

Step 2: Send the same evidence request to each candidate

Ask every provider to answer the matrix above for that configuration. Require links or documents that identify scope, version, and date. Separate a marketing statement from a technical specification, contract clause, independent report, attestation sample, or operational procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Verify confidential-mode behavior in a non-production account

Launch the exact image and driver combination. Confirm that confidential mode is enabled, that the GPU is inside the stated boundary, that unsupported features are understood, and that your attestation verifier accepts only the expected measurements. Test key release with a deliberately incorrect measurement to ensure secrets are withheld.

Step 4: Test isolation and deletion

Apply the intended network policy, inspect reachable endpoints, terminate the instance, and verify that disks, snapshots, credentials, addresses, and job artifacts follow the documented retention rules. Ask the provider how GPU memory is cleared and retain the answer with your deployment record.

Step 5: Map audit scope and responsibilities

Annotate the independent report with your service, region, data type, and contractual controls. Mark every complementary customer control and assign an owner. Reject an apparently strong report if its scope excludes the infrastructure or location you need.

Step 6: Decide how to handle capacity changes

Confidential GPU availability can vary by region and configuration. Define an approved fallback: another region, another qualified GPU, a queued capacity arrangement, or a pause. Do not silently fail over to a non-confidential SKU when sensitive data is involved.

Gate Pass condition Stop condition
Configuration fit Required GPU, image, region, network, and capacity are documented Provider cannot identify the exact service in scope
In-use protection GPU and CPU boundary matches the threat model Only CPU confidentiality is established where GPU protection is required
Attestation Your verifier can validate fresh evidence for the deployed configuration No usable evidence or no defined response to failed verification
Keys and storage Encryption, ownership, release, rotation, and revocation are documented Unknown personnel or services can decrypt without accountable controls
Lifecycle GPU memory, host memory, storage, and backups have stated sanitization rules Residual-data handling is unspecified
Assurance Independent report scope matches service, region, and obligations Certificate is cited without relevant scope or current evidence
Operations Your team can implement and monitor its responsibilities Required controls depend on undocumented provider actions

Use scoring only after mandatory gates pass. The framework helps expose missing evidence; it cannot turn an unknown control into a low-risk one.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by a security badge

Problem: A general cloud-security page or compliance logo is treated as proof for a GPU workload.

Correction: Ask for the exact GPU service, region, image, report scope, and control evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming confidential VM means confidential GPU

Problem: The CPU is protected, but GPU memory and processing remain outside the boundary.

Correction: Require documentation that the attached GPU is included, then verify it with attestation or a provider-supported check.

Ignoring image and driver compatibility

Problem: A confidential SKU exists, but the selected operating system or driver cannot boot securely or produce attestation.

Correction: Use a qualified image and record the supported driver and container versions before deployment.

Stopping at encryption at rest

Problem: Keys, GPU memory, crash artifacts, backups, or network paths are not addressed.

Correction: Review the complete lifecycle and key-release path, including deletion and revocation.

Treating availability as permanent

Problem: A documented configuration cannot be obtained in the required region when production starts.

Correction: Recheck capacity and feature availability immediately before deployment and define an approved fallback.

Assuming the provider owns every control

Problem: Weak identity, images, firewall rules, or retention settings undermine a well-secured host.

Correction: Turn the responsibility matrix into named customer tasks with evidence and review dates.

Provider questionnaire

Send these questions in writing and ask for answers tied to the exact configuration:

  1. Identify the SKU, GPU, image, driver, region, and network arrangement covered by your answer.
  2. Does the confidential boundary include GPU memory and computation? Describe what remains outside it.
  3. Provide attestation documentation, certificate-chain information, verifier instructions, and failure-handling procedures.
  4. Explain encryption for local, network-attached, snapshot, backup, and temporary storage.
  5. State who controls keys and how issuance, rotation, access, revocation, and emergency response work.
  6. Describe tenant isolation, private management access, filtering, firewall defaults, and provider support access.
  7. Explain how GPU memory, system memory, storage, and replacement hardware are sanitized between tenants and after termination.
  8. Identify the independent reports or certifications, their dates, locations, services, exceptions, and complementary customer controls.
  9. Provide the shared-responsibility matrix and identify every control your customer must configure or operate.
  10. Confirm current regional availability and what changes if the selected confidential configuration is capacity-constrained.

When to reject a candidate

Reject or pause the evaluation when the provider cannot name the exact service in scope, cannot establish that GPU processing is protected when your threat model requires it, cannot provide verifiable attestation where secrets depend on it, leaves sanitization unspecified, or offers an audit acronym without relevant scope. Also reject a technically strong service if your team cannot operate its customer-side controls consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A provider can still be suitable for workloads with lower confidentiality requirements when confidential GPU processing is unavailable. Make that a deliberate classification decision, document the residual risks, and prevent sensitive workloads from being scheduled on the weaker configuration.

Final deployment checklist

  • Threat model and data classification approved.
  • Exact GPU, SKU, image, driver, region, storage, and network recorded.
  • GPU-inclusive confidentiality boundary documented.
  • Attestation verifier tested, with key release blocked on failure.
  • Key ownership, rotation, revocation, and access logging configured.
  • Private management access and least-privilege network rules applied.
  • GPU-memory, host-memory, storage, backup, and replacement sanitization procedures accepted.
  • Independent assurance scope mapped to the service, region, and obligations.
  • Customer responsibilities assigned, monitored, and reviewed.
  • Capacity changes and fallback configurations approved without weakening protection silently.
