Choose the laptop first, then the SSD. Asus gaming laptops do not share one universal storage layout. Before comparing speed or price, identify the complete model number, confirm that a second M.2 position is present and unused, and match the slot’s length, PCIe interface, generation limit, and clearance. Asus lists two M.2 PCIe expansion slots on current TUF Gaming F16 (2026) and TUF Gaming 16 (2026) configurations, while other families and regional variants can differ. The procedure below shows how to verify your machine and buy a drive that actually fits.
Why the exact Asus model matters
A product-family name such as TUF Gaming or ROG Strix is not specific enough for an SSD purchase. The same family can contain different motherboards, regional configurations, revisions, and factory storage options. Asus’s own upgrade material treats compatibility as model-dependent, so use the full product identifier printed on the underside label, packaging, Windows system information, or your Asus support registration.

Write down the identifier exactly, including letters, numbers, and suffixes. Search that identifier on Asus’s specifications and support pages, then open the maintenance or upgrade guide for that exact machine. Do not assume that a specification for one TUF or ROG model applies to another with a similar name.
First question: is a second M.2 slot available?
The specification must either list a second M.2 PCIe slot or show a second SSD position in the model’s service documentation. A line such as “2x M.2 PCIe” establishes the platform’s slot count, but it does not prove that the slot is empty in the particular configuration you own. One position may already contain the factory drive, or a regional SKU may use a different arrangement.

| Asus documentation | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| TUF Gaming F16 (2026) specifications | Two M.2 PCIe expansion slots are listed for the cited configuration. | It does not establish that every F16 SKU has an empty second position, nor a universal capacity limit. |
| TUF Gaming 16 (2026) specifications | Two M.2 PCIe expansion slots are listed for the cited Canadian configuration. | Regional specifications do not automatically describe another market or revision. |
| ROG Strix SSD upgrade guide | The guide describes ROG Strix laptops with two separate SSD positions. | It is not evidence that every ROG Strix model has the same slot length, generation, or clearance. |
After opening the exact service guide, compare its motherboard diagram with the installed hardware. A listed second slot can be occupied, covered by a shield, or subject to a configuration restriction. Treat “two slots” as the starting point for inspection, not as permission to order any M.2 drive.
Match the M.2 length and interface
M.2 2280 is a physical size, not an interface
M.2 2280 describes a module approximately 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. Your laptop must have a mounting point and screw position for that length. The Asus FX506H/FX706H upgrade guide covers M.2 2280 positions; another laptop may use a different length or mounting arrangement. Confirm the standoff location in the model-specific guide before buying.
PCIe/NVMe versus M.2 SATA
An M.2 connector does not guarantee that every M.2 protocol will work. The FX506H/FX706H guide states: “The M.2 2280 slots do not support M.2 SATA SSD.” For those covered models, select a PCIe NVMe drive rather than an M.2 SATA module. Do not transfer that rule to a different Asus laptop without checking its own documentation; interface support is a motherboard feature, not a property of the M.2 shape alone.

Generation limits differ by slot
The same FX506H/FX706H guide gives separate ceilings: M.2 slot 1 supports up to PCIe Gen4 x4, while M.2 slot 2 supports up to PCIe Gen3 x4. Those figures are specific to the covered models. If your laptop’s second position is documented as Gen3 x4, a drive marketed for a newer generation cannot raise that slot’s electrical ceiling. Use the slot’s stated limit when deciding whether paying for a higher-rated model has any practical value.

| FX506H/FX706H upgrade guide (approximately 2020) | M.2 2280 | M.2 SATA is not supported; use the documented PCIe/NVMe type. | Slot 1: up to PCIe Gen4 x4; slot 2: up to PCIe Gen3 x4. |

Check sidedness and physical clearance
Two drives with the same 2280 dimensions can have different thicknesses. Components mounted close to the connector may leave room for memory chips on only one face of the SSD. The TUF Gaming F16 specification warns: “Due to surface-mounted components near the motherboard’s M.2 slot, only single-sided SSDs are supported.” If the exact product page or service guide contains that warning, choose a single-sided module; a double-sided design can press against the board, shield, or bottom cover.
Also check whether the laptop reuses a thermal shield, pad, or cover over the slot. Asus documentation does not establish one heatsink rule for every gaming laptop. Keep any factory hardware that the guide tells you to remove, and reinstall it in the same position. Do not force a drive under a shield or close the cover against resistance.

Choose capacity from the model documentation and your workload
There is no single Asus-wide maximum capacity established for second SSDs. The factory drive size shown on a product page is not proof of the largest module that the second slot accepts. Look for a capacity limit in the exact model’s specification or service guide; if none is stated, treat the maximum as unconfirmed rather than guessing.

- Game library: estimate the installed size of the titles you intend to keep locally and leave room for updates.
- Creative or development projects: include source files, scratch space, virtual machines, and exported builds rather than counting only the current project folder.
- Secondary library: decide whether the new drive will hold active work or less frequently used games and archives; that decision affects how much free space you need.
Capacity is a model-specific compatibility question before it is a price question. If Asus does not publish a maximum for your machine, select a capacity that the seller allows you to return and verify it after installation.

How to compare compatible SSDs
Only compare performance, endurance, or cost after a candidate passes the physical and electrical checks. A fast drive that cannot fit, is double-sided where the laptop requires single-sided media, or uses an unsupported interface is not a bargain.
| Decision factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | M.2 length, PCIe/NVMe versus SATA, supported PCIe generation, and single- or double-sided construction. | These are hard limits imposed by the laptop’s slot and surrounding hardware. |
| Capacity | The exact model’s documented support and the amount of data you plan to store. | The factory drive size does not define the second-slot maximum. |
| Thermal and physical fit | Clearance beneath the cover and whether a factory shield or pad must be reused. | Excess thickness can prevent the cover from closing or create pressure on the board. |
| Cost per usable capacity | Compare current prices only among drives that already meet the requirements. | A lower price per terabyte is irrelevant if the module is incompatible. |
| Warranty and returns | Seller-specific warranty, return window, and conditions for opened hardware. | These terms vary by product and seller and should be checked before purchase. |
Do not promise a particular reduction in game loading times from these specifications alone. The cited Asus pages describe slot capability, not independent benchmark results. A Gen4-capable SSD in a Gen3-limited position, for example, remains constrained by the laptop’s documented slot ceiling.

Use the exact maintenance guide for your model. Asus recommends professional supervision or an authorized service center in the FX506H/FX706H upgrade guide. If you install the drive yourself, work on a clean, nonconductive surface and use the screwdriver bit specified by the guide rather than forcing a mismatched tool.

- KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
- Back up important data. Confirm that files on the existing drive are copied elsewhere before opening the chassis. A second SSD is storage expansion, not a substitute for a backup.
- Shut the laptop down completely. Use the operating system’s Shut down command, wait for the display and status lights to go dark, and disconnect peripherals and the AC adapter.
- Read the model-specific opening instructions. Note the screw locations, clips, battery connector procedure, and any shield or pad covering the empty M.2 position. Do not rely on a teardown for a visually similar model.
- Remove the bottom cover as directed. Keep screws organized by location. Do not pry against ports or lift the cover while a cable remains attached.
- Make the board safe before handling the slot. Follow the guide’s battery-disconnection instruction. Asus’s 2023 gaming-notebook notice describes an Ambient Light Sensor that cuts system power when the bottom cover is removed, but it still directs owners to power off before upgrading; the sensor is not a reason to skip shutdown or battery precautions.
- Inspect the second position. Confirm that it is the slot identified by the guide, that the mounting post is present at the correct length, and that no existing module occupies it. Check for a single-sided restriction and identify any thermal pad or shield that must be reused.
- Insert the SSD at the guide’s angle. Align the connector notch with the slot, slide the module fully into the socket without twisting, and lower it onto the mounting post. Secure it with the specified retaining screw; stop if the hole or height does not align.
- Reinstall the thermal hardware and cover. Replace a shield or pad exactly as shown. Ensure that no cable is trapped and that the cover closes without pressure from the new module.
- Reassemble before reconnecting AC power. Asus’s safety notice specifically instructs owners to reinstall the bottom cover before connecting the AC adapter so the system’s power-off protection can be released. Follow that sequence for the exact model.
- Boot and verify detection. Check the firmware or operating system storage list. If the drive appears but has no usable volume, initialize and format it using the operating system’s disk-management tool only after confirming that it is the new, unallocated device.
Make the new drive usable in Windows
A newly installed SSD may be electrically detected but still absent from File Explorer because it has no partition or drive letter. In Windows, right-click the Start button and open Disk Management. Identify the new device by its capacity and status, then initialize it if Windows requests initialization, create a new simple volume, assign a drive letter, and format it with the file system appropriate for your use. Never initialize or format the disk containing your existing system and personal files.
If the drive is not listed in Disk Management, return to hardware checks before changing partitions: verify that the module is fully seated, the retaining screw is not lifting it, and the slot is the supported second position. A drive that is absent from both firmware and Windows is a physical, interface, or configuration problem rather than a missing drive letter.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The laptop does not detect the SSD anywhere
- Recheck the full model identifier and confirm that the slot is documented as usable for storage.
- Power down again, disconnect the battery as the guide directs, and reseat the module with the connector fully inserted.
- Verify that you bought PCIe/NVMe when the model excludes M.2 SATA; the FX506H/FX706H guide expressly excludes M.2 SATA.
- Inspect the mounting post and screw. A module held at the wrong height may not make reliable contact.
- Check the firmware storage page before troubleshooting Windows. If firmware cannot see the device, formatting or assigning a drive letter cannot solve the underlying issue.
The SSD fits the connector but the cover will not close
Stop rather than tightening the screws. Confirm the documented length, single-sided requirement, and any shield or pad arrangement. The TUF Gaming F16 warning about surface-mounted components is a reminder that clearance can be the limiting factor even when the connector and key appear correct.
The drive appears slower than its packaging suggests
Compare the SSD’s advertised generation with the slot’s documented ceiling. In the FX506H/FX706H example, slot 2 is limited to PCIe Gen3 x4 while slot 1 supports up to Gen4 x4. The slot limit, not the label on the drive, determines the interface available to that position.
The system powers on only after the cover is replaced
Follow Asus’s reassembly sequence. The 2023 notice explains that listed gaming models use an Ambient Light Sensor as a protection feature when the bottom cover is removed, and instructs owners to reconnect AC only after the cover is back in place. Treat this as a safety mechanism, not a replacement for a complete shutdown and the model’s battery procedure.
What to verify before ordering
- Full Asus model and product number, including regional or revision suffixes.
- A documented, physically available second M.2 slot.
- Supported module length, such as M.2 2280 where explicitly stated.
- PCIe/NVMe or SATA interface requirement; never infer it from the connector shape.
- PCIe generation and lane ceiling for the specific slot, not merely the laptop family.
- Single-sided or double-sided clearance requirement.
- Documented capacity limit, or an explicit acknowledgement that Asus has not stated one for that SKU.
- Whether a factory shield, thermal pad, or cover must be transferred.
- Return and warranty terms in case the module does not match the documented fit.
- A backup and the exact opening and power-off procedure before installation.
Use Asus’s own upgrade material for the final check
For a ROG Strix machine, Asus’s guide is titled How to upgrade the RAM and SSD of your ROG Strix laptop; use it to locate the storage positions for the particular Strix generation rather than relying on a family-level assumption. For the FX506H/FX706H family, consult the FX506H/FX706H Notebook PC Upgrade Guide, which supplies the 2280, interface, and slot-generation limits cited above. Asus’s 2023 Gaming New Series Laptop Hardware Upgrade Guide Notification, updated October 31, 2023, provides the cover-removal power-safety instruction. Specifications can vary by market and SKU, so the exact product page remains the deciding authority.
