A monitor that looks right on paper may still be a poor fit if the text is hard to read or the connection cannot support the display mode you want.
Start with your desk and the work you need to see
Monitor size is measured diagonally in inches. Dell’s Monitor Buying Guide offers these size bands as starting points, not ergonomic standards or a universal prescription:

Think about what the second screen will hold: a reference document, email, a video call, or another application. The relevant question is how much of that material you want visible at once, not simply whether a larger screen sounds better. Measure the desk’s usable width and depth, account for the primary display, and consider viewing distance and placement before choosing a diagonal size.

Resolution is the number of pixels across and down. For example, 1920 × 1080 means 1,920 pixels wide by 1,080 pixels high. Dell’s video-cable guide lists common labels and dimensions, including FHD at 1920 × 1080, WUXGA at 1920 × 1200, QHD at 2560 × 1600, 4K at 3840 × 2160, 5K at 5120 × 2880, and 8K at 7680 × 4320. Some product listings use “QHD” for 2560 × 1440 instead, so compare the stated pixel dimensions for the exact model rather than relying on the label alone.

More pixels can show more detail, but they do not guarantee larger or more comfortable text. Usability also depends on the monitor’s physical size, operating-system scaling, viewing distance, application, and computer support. Dell’s buying guidance does not prescribe one best resolution for office work, so compare the candidate’s size and native resolution together and check that your computer can output that mode and your operating system can scale it to a readable size.
Check every link in the video connection
Before buying, identify the computer’s video output, the monitor’s video input, and anything between them, such as a dock or adapter. The entire connection chain—including the port versions and cable—must support the monitor’s desired resolution and refresh rate. Dell’s guide gives these examples; actual capability depends on the devices and implementation:

USB-C
USB-C is not automatically a video connection. Dell states, “Not all USB-C ports support video.” Check the computer’s specifications or port markings for DisplayPort Alt Mode or appropriate Thunderbolt support. A compatible USB-C connection may carry video along with data, audio, and laptop charging, but charging support and power delivery vary by model.
HDMI and DisplayPort
Both are common digital choices for monitors, and both can carry audio as well as video. Match the port and cable version to the resolution and refresh rate you want; the interface name by itself does not confirm that the complete setup supports that mode.

DVI and VGA
DVI may be useful on older equipment, but its supported mode depends on whether it is single-link or dual-link, and it does not carry audio. VGA is an analog legacy connection. If you have a choice, Dell’s guidance favors a direct digital connection for modern monitors.
Adapters and docks
An adapter can bridge different port types, but check its directionality and supported display mode, as well as the specifications of the dock and both devices. A matching direct cable is simpler when the computer and monitor have compatible ports.

Use a short pre-purchase checklist
- Measure the available space. Account for the primary display, the second monitor’s stand or mount, and whether it will sit beside or above the first.
- Match size to the work. Decide what content you want visible on the second screen and use the size bands as prompts, not rules.
- Compare the exact resolution. Check the monitor’s native pixel dimensions, then consider readable scaling at its physical size.
- Verify the connection chain. Check the computer, dock, monitor, adapter if any, and cable for support of the desired resolution and refresh rate.
- Confirm any USB-C extras. If you want a single cable for video or charging, verify video support and power delivery for the particular computer and monitor models.
These checks reflect Dell’s size guidance and connection guidance. Both are vendor materials; the size ranges are suggestions, not independent ergonomic findings. The cited guidance does not establish a universally ideal office-monitor size or resolution, or a guaranteed productivity gain from adding a display.
