Choose the Galaxy model and storage first, then compare each carrier offer by the total you would pay for the phone and service during the time you expect to keep that plan. A low advertised phone payment—or a “free” phone—may depend on a qualifying plan, trade-in, installment term, and monthly bill credits that stop or change under conditions in the offer.
Choose the Galaxy model and storage before comparing deals
Start with the phone that suits your needs, rather than letting a promotion decide the model for you. Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy S26 purchase pages list 256GB and 512GB configurations and carrier purchase options; the configurations and prices shown at checkout can change, so confirm the exact model and storage on the day you shop. Make sure every offer you compare is for the same Galaxy model and storage. A carrier offer for one configuration is not directly comparable with a different configuration, even if the monthly payments look similar.

Work out the phone and service cost over a realistic period for you—not just the phone payment shown in an ad. Include the plan you would actually choose, the device installments, any upfront charges or fees stated in the offer, and discounts only when you meet their conditions.

Ask the carrier to show how it calculates the offer for your account and intended plan. A device discount tied to a more expensive plan may not reduce your overall spending. Do not treat a future credit as an immediate discount: note when it starts, how often it is applied, and the conditions attached to it.
Understand how the trade-in credit is paid
Samsung distinguishes its instant trade-in credit from carrier bill credits. The instant credit is applied toward a qualifying Galaxy purchase; carrier trade-in promotions are paid as monthly credits on billing statements. Samsung says those carrier credits can take one to three billing cycles to appear after the trade-in is accepted. It also says instant Samsung trade-in credit and carrier bill-credit promotions are separate and cannot be combined. Compare the timing and conditions, not just the headline value. Ask who receives the old device, when it must be sent, what condition it must meet, and what happens if the inspection rejects it. Samsung’s general FAQ identifies requirements such as the device powering on, having a functioning display, and having anti-theft locks disabled; an individual promotion may set additional or different terms.
Check deadlines and charge-back terms
Deadlines and remedies are offer-specific. For its March 2026 Galaxy S26 launch offer, Samsung required an eligible device to be sent within 15 days after the new purchase arrived and said it could charge back the applied trade-in credit if the device was late or failed review. That was a dated promotion, not a universal deadline. Check the terms attached to the checkout you are considering before counting the credit in your budget. Read the installment and early-exit terms closely
Promotional language such as “free” or “up to” does not by itself explain the payment arrangement. Check the qualifying plan, installment length, how and when credits are applied, and the agreement’s consequences if you leave the carrier or pay off the phone early. Those outcomes depend on the exact carrier offer and agreement; do not assume credits will continue or stop under a particular scenario without confirming the current terms.
For example, AT&T’s 2026 launch announcement described eligible discounts as 36 monthly bill credits tied to a qualifying installment plan and eligible unlimited plan. Before accepting, ask the carrier to point to the current policy and the specific agreement language covering early payoff, cancellation, and device unlocking. The applicable rules can vary, and a promotion announcement alone may not answer what happens on your account.

- Choose the model and storage. Compare the same configuration across offers.
- Write down the full terms. Record the phone payment, installment term, required plan, fees, trade-in method and amount, credit schedule, and conditions.
- Calculate your combined cost. Add phone and service costs over the period you realistically expect to keep the carrier plan; include a promotion only as its terms allow.
- Check what happens if plans change. Confirm the offer’s stated consequences for leaving, paying off the device, or failing to meet plan conditions, plus the carrier’s current unlocking policy.
- Verify trade-in logistics. Confirm eligibility, condition, shipping deadline, acceptance process, and any charge if the trade-in is rejected or late.
- Compare with an alternative purchase. If considering Samsung’s direct trade-in, compare its instant credit separately from carrier bill credits, since Samsung says the two promotions cannot be combined.
Samsung reported that U.S. Galaxy S26 series pre-orders were nearly 25% above the S25 series during the reported launch period, and that the S26 Ultra made up 80% of those S26 series pre-orders.
