No inflatable pool float makes a baby safe in the water. Pool seats can tip or flip, and a baby can slip underwater if a float deflates or shifts. For pool time, stay in the water and keep your baby within arm’s reach with a hand on them. For open water, use a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket—but keep supervising actively.
Why a baby pool float is not a safety device
Inflatable seats, rings and neck floats may look like they keep a baby above water, but they are not substitutes for an approved life jacket or an adult’s supervision. A seat can tip or flip. A float can deflate, or a baby can slip through it and end up underwater quickly.

Neck floats have additional concerns: a baby may slip through, and the position or pressure around the airway and neck may pose risks. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says inflatable swimming aids are not a substitute for approved life jackets. The AAP’s neck-float article, updated July 23, 2026, reports 115 incident reports involving neck floats received by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission from January 2019 through January 2024. Those reports included two infant deaths and two injuries requiring hospitalization. This is a count of reports, not a measure of risk or proof that a float caused every reported incident. What to do in a pool with a baby
Use touch supervision
For infants and toddlers in a pool, an adult should be in the water, within arm’s reach and providing touch supervision. Keep a hand on your baby rather than relying on a float to hold them up. Babies must not be left alone in or near water, even briefly, and another child should never be assigned responsibility for watching them. AAP: Water Safety and Young Children

Remember that shallow water is still dangerous
A baby can drown in just 1 or 2 inches of water, silently and within seconds, according to the AAP. That risk applies around water as well as during swimming, so stay close during any water play. AAP: Water Safety and Young Children
What equipment to use in open water
For a baby around or near open water, the AAP recommends a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. This is different from an inflatable pool toy or seat. Check that a specific jacket is approved and fits the infant; the guidance cited here does not identify a particular product. A life jacket does not replace active adult supervision. Build safety around the pool, not around a float
Secure access to the pool
The AAP recommends a four-sided fence separating the pool from the house. It should be at least 4 feet high, have gaps no wider than 4 inches, and use a self-closing, self-latching gate. These barriers help prevent unsupervised access; they do not replace watching a child who is in or near the water. AAP: Water Safety and Young Children
Prepare caregivers and children
- Learn infant CPR so you are prepared to respond in an emergency.
- Swim lessons may be appropriate for many children from around age one, depending on readiness. Lessons do not make a young child safe to leave unattended.
