B550 is a sensible starting point for a typical single-graphics-card gaming PC; consider X570 if you need its broader PCIe 4.0 connectivity or a board designed for two graphics slots. A motherboard’s feature list can determine what you can install and connect, but it does not by itself establish higher gaming frame rates or better overclocking results.
What the Ryzen 5 5600X needs from a motherboard
AMD specifies the Ryzen 5 5600X as a 6-core, 12-thread processor with a 3.7 GHz base clock, boost up to 4.6 GHz, and a default 65 W TDP. It uses the AM4 socket, supports DDR4 memory and PCIe 4.0, and is unlocked for overclocking. The processor does not have integrated graphics, so a build needs a discrete graphics card; motherboard display outputs should not be treated as usable video outputs with this CPU. Start with the exact motherboard model’s CPU support page, not just the chipset name. AMD’s AM4 compatibility matrix includes B550 and X570 for Ryzen 5000 processors, while warning that some boards may need a BIOS update. AMD directs buyers to the motherboard manufacturer’s compatibility list. The matrix was accessed on October 7, 2026; firmware and board revisions can change, so check the current support page and the board’s shipped BIOS before buying or assembling the system. B550 or X570: which chipset fits your build?
AMD characterizes B550 as offering PCIe 4.0 connectivity for graphics and NVMe storage, and describes X570 as an enthusiast chipset with broader PCIe 4.0 bandwidth and support for two graphics slots. These are chipset-level capabilities, not guarantees that every board implements every feature. Check the individual board’s manual and specification page for actual slot wiring, storage support, and lane-sharing limitations.

| Choice | What the chipset brings | When to investigate it |
|---|---|---|
| B550 | PCIe 4.0 connectivity for graphics and NVMe storage, as described by AMD. | A typical single-GPU gaming build where the selected board has the slots, storage connections, and other features you need. |
| X570 | Broader PCIe 4.0 bandwidth and support for two graphics slots, as described by AMD. | A build that can use the board’s additional connectivity or dual-graphics-slot capability. Confirm the specific board’s implementation before choosing it. |
AMD calls B550 “perfect for power-users who value flexibility, overclocking control, and PCIe® 4.0 connectivity for NVMe storage and graphics.” Treat that as AMD’s description of the chipset, not comparative evidence that B550 or a particular motherboard will overclock the 5600X better. The available manufacturer specifications do not establish a performance winner.

How to choose the right board for your particular PC
Once socket, memory type, and CPU support are confirmed, compare the board’s physical layout and connections against the parts you plan to use. A higher-end chipset is useful only when its capabilities match a real requirement.
- Case and form factor: Match the motherboard’s ATX, micro-ATX, or mini-ITX size to a form factor supported by your case. Also check GPU clearance and whether a thick graphics card will obstruct other slots.
- Graphics and expansion slots: Check the number, physical size, and operating mode of PCIe slots in the board manual. The presence of two full-length slots does not by itself establish that both run at the same bandwidth or suit your intended hardware.
- Storage: Count the M.2 slots and confirm which generations and drive sizes they support. Review whether installing an M.2 drive disables or changes access to any SATA ports or PCIe slots.
- Networking and USB: Confirm whether the board has the wired LAN or built-in Wi-Fi you need, then compare rear USB ports and internal headers against your peripherals and case front-panel connections.
- BIOS recovery: If the board may arrive with firmware too old for the 5600X, look for a documented BIOS update method that works without a supported older CPU. The MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK specification lists a Flash BIOS Button; do not assume another model has an equivalent feature.
- Local price and availability: These vary by region and over time. Compare current listings for the exact model and revision rather than relying on an old price or a chipset-based value assumption.
What to expect from overclocking
The 5600X is unlocked, but that only means the processor supports overclocking; it does not prove that one motherboard will deliver a higher clock, lower temperature, or more stable result than another. Those claims require comparative testing that is not established by the manufacturer specification pages cited here.

For a system that will run at stock settings, prioritize confirmed firmware support, case fit, storage, networking, and the ports you need. If you plan to tune the CPU, consult the board manual for its firmware controls and power-related settings, and follow AMD’s guidance on operation beyond stock specifications. Do not select a board on the assumption that its chipset label alone guarantees overclocking headroom.

Pre-purchase and build checklist
- Confirm that the motherboard is an AM4 DDR4 model and that its manufacturer lists the Ryzen 5 5600X as supported.
- Check the listed minimum BIOS version and compare it with the firmware on the board, if known. If an update might be required, verify the model’s update procedure and whether it can be performed without an older CPU.
- Match the board’s form factor to the case and check graphics-card clearance, slot placement, and any storage or PCIe lane-sharing notes.
- Verify M.2 and SATA connections, wired or wireless networking, rear USB, and internal headers against the rest of the build.
- Choose between B550 and X570 based on the actual connectivity and expansion you need, then compare current local pricing for the exact board.
