The right robot lawn mower is determined by the grass it must cut, the steepest slope it must climb, and the way your property is divided—not by your total lot size. Measure the mowable lawn, test the worst incline, map every zone and narrow passage, then compare each mower’s area rating, slope limits, traction, navigation system, and installation requirements. A published maximum is a specification, not a promise that every yard will perform identically.

This guide gives you a repeatable way to assess your property and eliminate unsuitable models before you buy. It also explains why two mowers with similar headline ratings can behave differently on wet slopes, around obstacles, or in tree-covered sections.

1. Measure the lawn the mower will actually cut

Start with the grass, not the property deed or estate-agent lot figure. A robot mower only needs capacity for the areas where it will be allowed to mow.

Calculate mowable area

Measure each lawn section and add the results. Subtract the footprint of the house, driveway, patios, paths, ponds, play surfaces, permanent garden beds, sheds, and any other space the mower will not enter.

Designed for complex yard layouts and personalized lawn care.

For a simple rectangular section, multiply length by width. For an irregular section, divide it into rectangles or triangles, calculate each part, and add them. Keep a written total and a sketch showing where each measurement came from. If a section is separated from the others, record it as a separate zone rather than hiding it in one large total.

Leave capacity headroom

Compare your measured mowable area with the manufacturer’s rated capacity. Do not treat the rating as a guaranteed completion time. Manufacturers may calculate capacity under different mowing modes: a systematic pattern can have a different stated area from irregular mowing. Husqvarna’s US Automower 420 iQ page, for example, gives a capacity of up to one acre and distinguishes irregular from systematic area figures. Those are US-market specifications for that listing, not a universal one-acre performance promise.

Capacity also depends on how often the mower is allowed to run, weather interruptions, charging cycles, growth rate, and the shape of the lawn. A model whose maximum exactly matches your measured area leaves little margin for a long wet spell or a period when you restrict operating hours. Treat the maximum as an upper boundary and choose a model with practical reserve after checking the manufacturer’s calculation method.

Record the measurements in a comparison sheet

Property detail What to record Why it matters
Mowable area Total square metres or square feet after exclusions Must fit the model’s rated capacity
Separate zones Number of lawn areas and whether a usable route connects them Determines multi-zone and transport-path requirements
Narrow passages Width of the tightest route, measured at its narrowest point Some models cannot turn or navigate through constrained gaps
Obstacles Trees, posts, slopes, drains, play equipment and temporary objects Affects mapping, boundary layout and collision risk
Operating restrictions When people, pets or irrigation make mowing unsuitable Reduces the available daily mowing window

2. Measure the steepest slope, not the average

A broad lawn can have a modest average grade but contain one short bank that exceeds a mower’s limit. Measure the steepest incline the mower would encounter, including the approach to a boundary and any turn at the top or bottom.

Use the percentage-slope formula

Husqvarna states the calculation as: Slope (%) = vertical height / horizontal distance × 100. Measure the vertical rise and the horizontal run separately; do not substitute the diagonal distance.

For example, a bank that rises 0.8 metres over a 4-metre horizontal run is 0.8 ÷ 4 × 100 = 20%. A 1-metre rise over 2 metres is 50%. Use a long enough run to avoid making a small bump appear to be an entire hill, but measure short steep sections separately when the mower must cross them.

Check two limits on the specification sheet

Many manufacturers publish one limit for the mower’s work area and another, lower limit near the boundary. Husqvarna’s support information lists 40% work-area and 15% boundary limits for several Automower families, with higher values for certain all-wheel-drive models. The limits apply only to the models listed on that support page and can change by region or product revision.

Do not compare a work-area percentage with a boundary percentage as though they were the same test. If your steep bank is next to a perimeter wire or virtual boundary, the boundary limit is the relevant one. Look for separate figures labelled work area, inside the boundary, near the boundary, or equivalent wording.

Why the headline grade is not the whole answer

A mower may climb a straight, dry slope at its rated angle and still struggle when it turns across the slope, stops near an edge, or encounters wet grass. Honda’s guidance notes that turning across an incline, edge mowing, wet conditions and installation choices make operation more demanding than the number alone suggests. Traction depends on wheel tread, drive system and weight distribution as well as the percentage grade.

Exclude any section that exceeds the manufacturer’s applicable limit. If only the outer edge is too steep, move the boundary onto flatter ground rather than allowing the mower to approach the drop. Never assume that a software boundary will prevent a physical slide on slick grass.

3. Match drive and traction to the ground

Understand what the drive system changes

Two-wheel-drive machines can be adequate on level, firm lawns, while steep, soft or uneven ground places greater demands on powered wheels and weight distribution. An all-wheel-drive design can improve climbing and turning capability, but it does not remove the need to respect the model’s published work-area and boundary limits.

Read the maker’s terrain guidance for the exact model. A family name is not enough: traction hardware and allowable grades can differ between variants.

Account for wet grass and wheel condition

Wet grass reduces grip for any mower. Schedule operation when the surface is less slippery if your model and local conditions allow it, and keep the wheels free of packed clippings and mud. Husqvarna says most of its models offer an optional terrain kit with heavier rear wheels and wheel brushes; availability is model-dependent. Confirm compatibility with the precise model and revision before buying an accessory.

Inspect ruts, loose soil and transitions

A rated incline does not describe deep wheel ruts, loose topsoil, exposed roots, abrupt steps, drainage channels or a sharp transition from lawn to paving. Mark these features on your property sketch. A mower that can climb the clean portion of a bank may lose traction when one wheel drops into a rut or crosses a wet patch.

4. Choose navigation that fits your yard

Navigation determines how the mower knows where to work and how reliably it returns to that area. No method is universally best; installation, tree cover, signal conditions, obstacles and the number of zones all matter.

Navigation approach How it defines the lawn Important conditions
Boundary wire A physical wire marks the perimeter and restricted areas Requires careful installation, buried or secured wire, and reliable connections; later landscape changes may require moving it
Satellite or RTK positioning Positioning signals support virtual boundaries and mapped work areas Needs usable sky view and a dependable correction or reference signal; trees and structures can affect reception
Virtual mapping without a perimeter wire An app or positioning system stores digital boundaries and routes Check signal coverage, setup requirements and whether the model supports every zone you need
LiDAR mapping Laser sensing builds a map and detects surroundings Confirm how the model handles dense vegetation, narrow routes and changing obstacles
Vision-based navigation Cameras and software identify lawn edges and objects Performance can depend on lighting, visibility, grass-edge contrast and obstacle types

Manufacturers increasingly combine these approaches. Segway describes multi-zone controls and LiDAR-based wire-free mapping for its i2 family, and separately markets an i2 AWD model for complex terrain. These are manufacturer feature claims, not independent comparative test results. Evaluate the underlying requirements rather than choosing a technology because its label sounds newer.

Check signal conditions before choosing wire-free operation

Walk the property and note tall tree canopies, walls, roof overhangs, dense hedges and narrow side yards. Ask whether the proposed system needs a clear view of the sky, a reference station, Wi-Fi or another communication path. A wire-free map is useful only where the mower can maintain the positioning and communication conditions specified for that model.

Check routes between zones

Several lawns may count as one property but still require separate work areas. Some systems can manage multiple zones in an app; others need a physical or mapped transport path wide enough for the mower. Husqvarna says the 420 iQ can use mapped work areas and transport paths, while Segway describes app-based multi-zone management and safe channels connecting zones. Verify the exact model’s zone count, channel rules and passage limits.

5. Map zones, passages and obstacles before purchase

Draw a scaled property sketch

  1. Outline every mowable section. Label front, back, side and detached lawns separately.
  2. Mark the narrowest passage. Measure between walls, fences, raised beds and tree trunks at the tightest point, not at the entrance.
  3. Mark permanent obstacles. Include trees, posts, benches, play equipment, ponds, drainage covers and irrigation hardware.
  4. Show connecting routes. Draw the path a mower would use to reach each zone and identify slopes or steps along it.
  5. Mark no-go areas. Include soft ground, drop-offs, steep edges and places where people or pets regularly occupy the lawn.

Dreame’s buying guidance identifies zones, tree cover and narrow passages as key planning factors. Its examples are manufacturer guidance, not a universal passage-width rule, so use the exact model’s stated clearance and turning requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for changing obstacles

A mower may map a lawn successfully when it is empty but encounter trouble after you add a paddling pool, temporary tent, garden furniture or seasonal decorations. Decide whether those objects will be fenced, mapped as exclusion areas or removed before each mowing window. Do not rely on collision detection to protect fragile objects or prevent every edge incident.

6. Install a sloped yard conservatively

Installation can determine whether a mower remains stable even when the slope is within its published limit.

Choose the docking location carefully

Place the dock on ground the mower can approach and leave without a difficult cross-slope turn. Keep the route clear of ruts, standing water and sharp transitions. If the only possible dock is at the bottom of a steep bank, check the model’s approach, departure and boundary limits rather than measuring only the main lawn.

Lay boundaries away from risky edges

Husqvarna recommends excluding areas beyond the model’s maximum slope, moving an outer boundary onto flatter ground where an edge is too steep, and adjusting path or guide-wire placement for the installation type. Its guidance warns that turning around obstacles on a steep slope can increase slipping risk, especially when the surface is wet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Honda likewise advises careful dock and boundary planning and recommends excluding very steep, heavily rutted or obstructed inclines when appropriate. Follow the exact installation manual for your model; generic spacing advice cannot account for every drive system or boundary method.

Test before leaving the mower unattended

  1. Run the mower in daylight on the flattest part of each zone.
  2. Observe its approach to the slope, turns, boundary and dock.
  3. Stop the test if wheels spin, the body slides, the mower becomes high-centred or it repeatedly loses its route.
  4. Reposition the boundary, add an approved traction accessory or exclude the section according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Repeat after rain only if the manual permits operation in those conditions; wet grass changes traction.

7. Compare candidate models with one yard-specific scorecard

Use identical measurements for every candidate. A model that wins on area may fail on boundary slope or navigation, while a terrain-focused model may require a more involved installation.

Comparison item Questions to answer Evidence to record
Rated mowable area Does the figure cover your net lawn, and which mowing mode produced it? Manufacturer capacity, mode and region
Work-area slope Is the steepest internal incline below the stated limit? Percentage and test condition stated by the maker
Boundary slope Is the edge or perimeter bank below the separate boundary limit? Boundary percentage and applicable model family
Drive and traction Are wheel tread, powered wheels and weight distribution suited to your surface? Drive type, terrain notes and compatible kits
Navigation Will positioning, wire, LiDAR or vision work through your trees and structures? Installation and signal requirements
Zones and passages Can it reach every lawn through the available routes? Zone count, channel rules and minimum passage information
Installation equipment What must be supplied, buried, mounted or configured? Included components and site work
Serviceability Can you obtain compatible blades, wheels and other wear parts? Model-specific replacement and accessory information

8. What official specifications illustrate

Husqvarna Automower 420 iQ (US listing)

Husqvarna’s US product information describes the Automower 420 iQ as using EPOS satellite positioning and virtual mapping. It lists capacity up to one acre and slope capability up to 45% within the boundary area, while explaining that capacity varies by mowing mode. Treat these as US-market manufacturer specifications and recheck the exact listing and model year before purchase.

Honda Miimo figures (UK listing)

Honda UK lists the Miimo HRM 1000, HRM 1500, HRM 2500 and HRM 4000 for slopes up to 47%. The Miimo 40 and Miimo 70 are listed up to 27%. The same guide places the HRM range in lawns from 1,000 to 4,000 square metres. These are UK manufacturer figures, not a cross-brand test or a guarantee that every model performs identically on wet or obstructed ground.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Published example Area or slope figure How to interpret it
Automower 420 iQ, US Up to one acre; up to 45% within the boundary area Check mowing mode, US specification and exact model revision
Miimo HRM 1000/1500/2500/4000, UK Up to 47% slope; HRM range listed for 1,000–4,000 m² lawns UK figures; confirm the individual model’s installation limits
Miimo 40 and 70, UK Up to 27% slope Do not transfer the HRM rating to these smaller models

9. A practical buying procedure

  1. Measure net lawn area. Exclude buildings, paving, beds and other no-mow surfaces.
  2. Measure the worst incline. Record both the internal slope and the steepest perimeter or boundary section using rise divided by run times 100.
  3. Separate the zones. Note whether each area has a mower-sized route or needs manual relocation.
  4. Inspect signal and visibility. Identify trees, walls and rooflines that could affect satellite, RTK, LiDAR or vision systems.
  5. Shortlist by hard limits. Remove models whose capacity, work-area slope, boundary slope or passage specification is insufficient.
  6. Compare traction and installation. Read the model-specific instructions for wheel drive, dock placement, boundary routing and wet conditions.
  7. Verify accessories and parts. Confirm that terrain kits, wheel brushes and replacement blades fit the exact model.
  8. Plan a controlled first run. Test every zone, route and slope while you can intervene, then refine boundaries or exclusion areas.

10. Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

Using the property size instead of lawn size

A large lot with a small lawn can be over-specified, while a compact lot with several broad grass sections can exceed a mower’s capacity. Always calculate the grass the mower will maintain.

Using the average slope

One short, steep bank can determine suitability. Measure the worst section and compare it with both work-area and boundary limits.

Assuming all percentage ratings are equivalent

A work-area rating, a boundary rating and a figure for a particular drive mode are different pieces of information. Keep the label and model attached to every number in your notes.

Choosing wire-free navigation without checking the site

Satellite, RTK, LiDAR and vision systems have different dependencies. Tree cover, structures, lighting, communication paths and map setup can all matter. Select the system that fits your physical environment, not the one with the most impressive terminology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring wet-weather traction

Rain can turn an acceptable slope into a slipping hazard. Wet grass, mud and wheel buildup reduce grip; include those conditions in your risk assessment and follow the manufacturer’s operating guidance.

Assuming a terrain kit solves every problem

Heavier wheels or brushes may help when the accessory is approved for the model, but they do not override slope limits, unsafe edges, poor routes or an unsuitable dock location.

Final decision rule

Choose the mower that clears every hard constraint on your measured property: enough capacity for the net mowable area, separate work-area and boundary slope ratings above your steepest sections, traction suited to the surface, navigation compatible with trees and structures, and routes that connect every zone. If a section falls outside any limit, exclude it or redesign the boundary rather than hoping a maximum specification will cover it. Manufacturer pages are useful for confirming specifications, but they do not establish independent comparative performance; the safest choice is the model whose published requirements fit your yard with room for real-world conditions.
