How to Choose a RISC-V Single-Board Computer for Ubuntu

Choose a RISC-V single-board computer for Ubuntu by starting with Canonical’s supported-board directory, then verify the exact board revision, Ubuntu image, RISC-V ISA profile, boot method, storage path, and peripheral support. Do not treat every RISC-V board as interchangeable: Ubuntu compatibility is board- and release-specific.

The StarFive VisionFive 2 is a clearly documented option. Canonical provides Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS server images for it, a microSD preinstalled-image workflow, and a USB-UART console procedure. Installing directly to eMMC, USB, or NVMe is also documented, but requires a U-Boot bootloader on SPI flash. If you need a different board, use the same evidence-led process rather than relying on a vendor claim or a community listing alone.

What Ubuntu support means on a RISC-V board

A board can be advertised as RISC-V capable without having a complete, maintained Ubuntu path. For a practical Ubuntu decision, support should mean that Canonical identifies the exact board or revision, publishes an installation guide, provides an image for a stated Ubuntu release, and documents boot requirements and known hardware limitations.

Canonical’s supported-board index, reported as updated on September 24, 2026, is the right place to create a shortlist. Each entry leads to a board-specific guide. That guide is more useful than a generic architecture statement because it tells you whether the image is a server build or another variant, which storage devices can be used, how the board reaches its bootloader, and which peripherals are not yet usable.

Support also changes over time. A board may have an image for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS but not meet the baseline for Ubuntu 25.10. Firmware, kernel versions, board revisions, and image availability can change independently, so check the guide for the release you actually intend to run.

Start with the supported-board index

Confirm the exact model and revision

Search for the complete product name, not merely the chip family. The regular StarFive VisionFive 2 and VisionFive 2 Lite have separate Canonical guides. A procedure for one should not be assumed to apply to the other. The same caution applies to carrier boards and compute modules: a module guide can describe different ports, boot media, or firmware from a similarly named development board.

Separate Canonical support from community listings

Community directories, including developer-board catalogs maintained outside Canonical, are useful for discovering hardware. They are a different evidence level from a Canonical installation guide. Use them to find candidates, then verify the candidate in Canonical’s index before treating Ubuntu installation as documented support.

Read the limitations section before buying

A board can be listed as Ubuntu-supported while still lacking a feature you consider essential. Graphics acceleration, PCIe devices, Wi-Fi, USB ports, and display output may depend on a particular kernel and firmware combination. The limitations are part of the compatibility result, not an optional footnote.

Match the RISC-V ISA profile to the Ubuntu release

The instruction-set profile is now a release-selection constraint. Canonical states that Ubuntu 25.10 requires RVA23 as its minimum RISC-V baseline. A board designed around RVA20 therefore should not be selected with the assumption that it will boot every newer Ubuntu release.

If your board is RVA20

Canonical’s stated route for RVA20 users is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Ubuntu Pro. Canonical says this combination can provide up to 15 years of support, subject to using Ubuntu Pro and the terms of that offering. This is a support-lifecycle choice, not a performance claim: it lets an RVA20 board remain on a supported long-term release instead of forcing an upgrade to a release whose ISA baseline it cannot meet.

If you require Ubuntu 25.10 or newer

Verify that the exact board implements RVA23 and that Canonical publishes an image for it. Do not infer RVA23 support from a board’s CPU brand, clock specification, or a reseller description. The ISA profile must be confirmed for the board and the image combination.

Interpret the Ubuntu 26.04 outlook carefully

Canonical’s 2025 retrospective and 2026 outlook describe Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as an RVA23-baseline target. That statement provides policy context, not a substitute for an installable board image. Check the current board guide when that release is available and confirm that your board’s firmware and peripherals are covered.

Compare installation friction before comparing hardware

Two boards with similar processors can have very different setup experiences. Record the following for every candidate:

  • Whether Canonical supplies a preinstalled server image, a live installer, or both.
  • Which device starts the board: microSD, eMMC, USB storage, NVMe, SPI flash, or another documented path.
  • Whether a USB-UART adapter is required for first boot and recovery.
  • Whether you must write or replace a bootloader in SPI flash.
  • Whether the documented kernel supports the peripherals you need.

A preinstalled image is usually the least invasive way to confirm that the board boots. A live installer offers more storage choices but can add bootloader work and recovery risk. Treat those as separate workflows when planning your build.

What the VisionFive 2 documentation establishes

Preinstalled Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS server image

Canonical identifies the StarFive VisionFive 2 as a RISC-V single-board computer and documents Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS server images. The preinstalled route uses a microSD card. The published console workflow connects a USB UART adapter to the UART pins on the GPIO header, allowing you to see boot messages and complete first-boot work on a headless board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The microSD and UART requirements are practical prerequisites, not optional accessories if you are following that documented path. Canonical’s guide does not establish a particular card capacity or a particular adapter model, so choose hardware that meets your own storage and electrical requirements rather than treating an unverified model number as mandatory.

Live installation to eMMC, USB, or NVMe

The VisionFive 2 live server route can target eMMC, USB, or NVMe. Before using it, Canonical requires U-Boot on the board’s SPI flash. This is the key distinction from simply writing an image to removable media: the board needs a bootloader that can locate and start the installer and the eventual system on the selected target.

Canonical warns that the vendor-supplied U-Boot is not EBBR-compatible without manual changes. Plan for that firmware preparation explicitly. If you skip it, a correctly written eMMC, USB drive, or NVMe device may still fail to boot because the board is starting with an incompatible bootloader.

A sensible first-boot sequence

  1. Open the VisionFive 2 guide and confirm that the 24.04.5 LTS image matches your board revision.
  2. Use the documented preinstalled server image on microSD for the first boot rather than beginning with a storage migration.
  3. Connect a USB UART adapter to the GPIO-header UART as described by Canonical, then power the board and observe the console.
  4. After the board boots reliably, decide whether the operational system should remain on microSD or move to eMMC, USB, or NVMe.
  5. For a live installation, prepare U-Boot on SPI flash first and account for the EBBR compatibility warning before writing the target storage.
  6. Keep the microSD boot path available as a recovery method until the new storage device and bootloader have both been verified.

This sequence separates an image problem from a bootloader problem. It also gives you a working console if a later storage change does not start correctly.

Do not assume the VisionFive 2 Lite is identical

The VisionFive 2 Lite has its own Canonical guide and its own Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS images. Use that guide for the Lite model’s image, boot source, console wiring, and limitations. The existence of a regular VisionFive 2 procedure does not establish that the Lite has the same firmware, ports, or installation steps.

Review peripheral limitations against your workload

Graphics and desktop use

If your goal is a graphical desktop, verify GPU and display support in the exact board guide and kernel version. Server-image availability does not imply a supported accelerated desktop. A board that boots Ubuntu successfully may still be better suited to SSH, services, automation, or development without local graphics.

PCIe and high-speed storage

Check whether PCIe is complete enough for the device you intend to attach. In Canonical’s Milk-V Mars CM documentation, PCIe support is reported as incomplete. That makes the module a poor choice for a project whose success depends on a particular PCIe peripheral unless the guide explicitly confirms that device path.

USB and onboard devices

The same Mars CM guide reports that its USB 2.0 port is unsupported by the documented 6.8 kernel. A board can therefore have a physical connector that is unusable with the published Ubuntu setup. Count only the ports that the guide says work with your intended kernel and image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless, cameras, and other add-ons

Do not infer Wi-Fi, camera, audio, or GPIO usability from connector presence. Look for an explicit support statement, driver requirement, or tested device class in the board guide. If the documentation is silent, record the feature as unestablished and plan a fallback rather than treating silence as compatibility.

Choose by workload, not by a generic “best board” label

Headless server or network service

Prioritize a documented server image, reliable console access, and the storage medium you can recover easily. The VisionFive 2’s microSD server path and UART procedure fit this evaluation style. Confirm networking and any required storage device in the current guide before deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software development and continuous integration

Check the Ubuntu release and ISA baseline first, then verify that your toolchain, containers, interpreters, and build dependencies are available for RISC-V. A board that meets the ISA requirement can still be unsuitable if a required device driver or package is missing. Use documented support rather than assuming that an x86 or Arm workflow transfers unchanged.

Desktop, graphics, or display projects

Require an explicit GPU and display-support statement. The Mars CM limitation illustrates why a physically present graphics device is not enough. If the guide does not document working acceleration for your intended kernel, classify the board as headless or experimental for that project.

Storage-heavy or peripheral-heavy systems

Map every required device to a documented interface. For the VisionFive 2, NVMe, USB, and eMMC are listed as live-install targets only when the SPI U-Boot prerequisite is satisfied. For any board, incomplete PCIe or unsupported USB can invalidate an otherwise attractive design.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A repeatable selection checklist

  1. Define the job. Write down whether the board will run headless services, development workloads, a desktop, or storage and peripheral experiments.
  2. Select an Ubuntu release. Decide whether you need Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Ubuntu 25.10, or a later release, then check its RISC-V baseline.
  3. Verify the ISA profile. Confirm RVA20 or RVA23 for the exact board rather than relying on a family name.
  4. Open the exact Canonical guide. Match the model, Lite or regular variant, and hardware revision.
  5. Record the image type. Note whether the guide provides a preinstalled server image, a live installer, or both.
  6. Record the boot path. Include microSD, SPI, eMMC, USB, NVMe, and any UART requirement.
  7. List blockers. Mark unsupported GPU, incomplete PCIe, unsupported USB, or any other limitation that conflicts with the workload.
  8. Plan recovery. Keep a known-good boot medium and console method until the final storage and firmware arrangement has been tested.
  9. Recheck before purchase or deployment. Confirm image availability, kernel version, board revision, and support status because these details can change.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Choosing from a processor specification alone

Symptom: The CPU appears suitable, but Ubuntu will not boot or a required port does not work. Fix: Start over with the board-specific Canonical guide and its limitations; architecture compatibility is not the same as complete board support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a newer Ubuntu release will work

Symptom: An RVA20 board is paired with Ubuntu 25.10. Fix: Use Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Ubuntu Pro when that is Canonical’s supported route, or choose a board that meets the RVA23 baseline.

Writing storage before preparing SPI boot firmware

Symptom: An eMMC, USB, or NVMe installation is present but the board falls back to the old boot device. Fix: For the VisionFive 2 live route, prepare U-Boot on SPI first and account for the vendor-U-Boot EBBR warning.

Skipping the serial console

Symptom: A headless board appears dead because there is no video output or network service yet. Fix: Follow the documented USB-UART connection to the GPIO-header UART so boot errors and firmware messages are visible.

Equating a connector with a working peripheral

Symptom: A USB, PCIe, or GPU-dependent project fails despite the board having the physical interface. Fix: Treat the guide’s kernel-specific limitation as authoritative for that Ubuntu setup and select a different board or workload if necessary.

What the documentation does not tell you

Canonical’s compatibility pages do not establish a comparable current price, stock position, or measured speed for these boards. They also do not justify labels such as fastest, best value, or most powerful. Those claims require separate, controlled testing and a clearly defined workload.

Likewise, a listed guide is not a promise that every future Ubuntu release, firmware revision, or peripheral will remain compatible. Recheck the board page when you change releases, replace boot firmware, or move from a development setup to production.

Bottom line: a practical shortlist method

For the least ambiguous documented path, begin with the StarFive VisionFive 2 and Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS server on microSD, using the USB-UART console procedure. Move to eMMC, USB, or NVMe only after preparing U-Boot on SPI and understanding the EBBR warning. Choose the VisionFive 2 Lite only from its separate guide.

For other boards, use Canonical’s index as the gate: confirm the exact image, ISA baseline, bootloader work, storage path, and peripheral limitations. If your project needs Ubuntu 25.10, require RVA23. If it can remain on RVA20, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Ubuntu Pro is Canonical’s documented long-support route. This process produces a defensible board choice without pretending that compatibility documentation is a performance or price comparison.
