The right retro console is determined first by the games and media you want, not by its appearance. Choose an HDMI cartridge system if you own compatible Atari or other original cartridges; choose a subscription library for convenient access to a broad, changing catalog; choose a cartridge handheld if portable play matters and add a dock when you need the television. Then verify controller support, multiplayer rules, display format, CRT limitations, and the cost of required adapters, docks, cables, or memberships.

Start with the games you actually want to play

“Retro console” can mean several very different products. Some read cartridges you already own, some stream or download a curated library while your membership remains active, and some are handheld cartridge systems that need a dock for television play. Those approaches are not interchangeable.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Own Atari cartridges: an Atari 2600+ or 7800+ provides HDMI output while using compatible 2600 and 7800 cartridges.
  • Want many classics without collecting hardware: Nintendo Switch Online supplies NES, SNES, Game Boy and, at higher tiers, additional libraries through a membership.
  • Want portable cartridge play: Analogue Pocket supports Game Boy-family cartridges and optional adapters for other systems; its Dock adds 1080p HDMI television play.
  • Want original N64 cartridges on a modern display: Analogue 3D is a focused N64 cartridge option with HDMI output, but it does not support CRT televisions.

Before comparing specifications, write down the exact games, cartridge formats, number of players, and television you intend to use. A console that cannot run your preferred titles is the wrong choice regardless of its video quality.

Choosing an HDMI cartridge console

Atari 2600+: a straightforward 2600/7800 cartridge route

The Atari 2600+ is a modern cartridge-compatible console rather than original 1970s or 1980s hardware. Atari says it uses emulation technology to play Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and sends the picture over HDMI. The package includes a CX40+ joystick and a 10-in-1 game cartridge.

#1 Best Overall
Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition Console, Game & Wireless Joystick
  • Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition: The iconic console, now in PAC-MAN yellow with illuminated character icons across the front.
  • Backward and Forward Compatible: Play retro games just like you remember them on a system upgraded for today. Play both Atari 2600 and 7800 games on this 2600+ console. Compatible with everything in the Plus Platform, as well as with most original accessories and cartridges.
  • New Arcade-Style PAC-MAN Game: Includes PAC-MAN: Double Feature 2-in-1 game cartridge. Featuring an all-new, arcade-style version, PAC-MAN 7800 and the very first home version of the game, PAC-MAN 2600.
  • Wireless Joystick: Also includes a PAC-MAN Edition of the Atari CX-40+ Wireless Joystick.
  • HDMI Output: Connect instantly to modern TVs with HDMI output and widescreen mode.

“Supports Atari cartridges” does not mean every cartridge is guaranteed. Atari describes compatibility as covering most 2600 and 7800 cartridges and links to a compatibility list. Check that list against each cartridge, especially unusual revisions, third-party releases, or titles using uncommon hardware, before buying.

The box includes an HDMI cable and a USB-C power cable, but no USB-C power adapter. Plan for a suitable power source in your setup. This is an easy detail to miss when replacing an old console whose original power supply is no longer relevant.

Atari 7800+: choose it for its controller and display options

The Atari 7800+ also accepts Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and connects to a television through HDMI. Its included game is Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, and the package includes a wireless CX78+ gamepad.

Atari advertises near-perfect compatibility with original and third-party games, but that wording still is not a guarantee for every cartridge. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact titles you plan to play. The console offers 4:3 and widescreen viewing settings. Widescreen changes the presentation format; it does not mean that every game was designed for a wider image, so 4:3 may better preserve the original proportions.

Confirm regional availability and the included configuration where you live. Retail packages and supported games can vary by market, and the product page is the authoritative place to check before ordering.

What cartridge systems can and cannot do

  • They let you use supported physical cartridges instead of relying on a membership catalog.
  • They do not recreate the original console’s internal hardware: the 2600+ explicitly uses emulation, while compatibility is defined by the manufacturer’s tested support.
  • A cartridge you own may still require cleaning, may be damaged, or may fall outside the published compatibility list.
  • One included controller does not automatically provide a four-player setup; verify ports, wireless pairing and the game’s own player limit.

Choosing a curated digital library

What Nintendo Switch Online includes

Nintendo’s classic-games catalog currently claims “over 150 classic games.” That is Nintendo’s service count, not an independently audited total, and the catalog can change. The basic membership tier includes NES, SNES and Game Boy libraries. The Expansion Pack adds Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Genesis and Virtual Boy libraries. Nintendo GameCube classics are exclusive to Switch 2.

A platform name in the catalog does not tell you which Switch hardware or subscription tier is required. Check the game’s listing, your region and the current membership details. Nintendo’s library access instructions explain how to download the relevant classic-game applications on supported systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Membership access is not permanent ownership

Nintendo says classic games can be played offline after they are available on the system, but the console must periodically connect to the internet to verify an active membership. You therefore retain convenient local play while the membership and service rules remain valid; you do not acquire an unrestricted, permanent copy of every title. A changing catalog and regional availability are part of the decision.

When a subscription is the better fit

  • You want a broad selection without sourcing, storing and maintaining cartridges.
  • You already use a supported Switch system and value save states, portable play or a single digital interface.
  • You accept recurring membership and the possibility that availability changes.

Choose a cartridge solution instead when ownership of specific physical games, long-term independence from a service, or original cartridge collecting is your priority.

Choosing a portable cartridge system

Analogue Pocket and its core cartridge support

Analogue Pocket supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Optional adapters extend it to Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine and SuperGrafx HuCard games.

Pocket uses FPGA hardware to reproduce the behavior needed for legacy cartridges. Analogue describes it as playing the cartridges themselves rather than copyrighted ROM files. That distinction matters if you want a physical-media workflow and do not want a device whose primary purpose is loading downloaded game images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adding television play with the Dock

The separate Analogue Dock connects Pocket to an HDTV over 1080p HDMI. It supports wireless Bluetooth controllers, 2.4 GHz controllers and wired USB controllers. Include the Dock in your setup budget if television play is essential; the handheld alone is not the same as a docked living-room console. Include any system-specific adapters as well when your library extends beyond Game Boy-family cartridges.

  • User Guide Languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Japanese and Arabic. Dynamic RGB LED lights.

Analogue says Pocket OS is designed to connect to virtually every 8BitDo Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz and next-generation controller, with button mapping available per controller and system. That is a vendor statement about Pocket and should not be generalized to unrelated consoles or software.

Who should choose Pocket

  • Players whose priority is authentic access to Game Boy-family cartridges in a portable form.
  • Collectors who want one handheld to cover several cartridge families through optional adapters.
  • Households that want both portable play and a television setup, and are willing to buy the Dock separately.

Choosing an N64-focused option

Analogue 3D is designed around original N64 cartridges and HDMI television output. It is a useful example of why “TV compatible” needs a precise connection and display type: Analogue explicitly says the system is not compatible with CRT televisions.

The 8BitDo 64 controller is not included, so account for a controller purchase if you do not already have a suitable one. Verify the specific N64 games you care about and the product’s current regional availability before committing. An HDMI television is a requirement, not merely a recommended display.

Check controllers before you plan multiplayer

Included controllers are not universal

Look at the controller’s connection method and the software it was designed for. Nintendo’s Switch Online NES controller FAQ says the wireless NES controller is designed for NES Classics and is not guaranteed to work with other software. It is also distinct from the NES Classic Edition controller.

On a cartridge console, a bundled joystick or gamepad may be ideal for its target system but unsuitable for another platform. On a docked handheld, controller compatibility can depend on Bluetooth profile, 2.4 GHz receiver, USB support and the game’s button mapping. Confirm all four before buying several controllers.

Multiplayer has separate limits

Hardware may accept multiple controllers while a particular game or library does not support the mode you expect. Nintendo’s multiplayer instructions tell players to provide a compatible controller for each participant in supported classic games. The Game Boy and Game Boy Advance libraries do not support same-system multiplayer, according to Nintendo’s support information.

  • Please review full game list. For better gaming experience, please update the firmware for the product as soon as you plug the item in.

For any system, check the game’s original player count, whether simultaneous or alternating play is supported, and how many controllers the console or Dock can pair. Do not infer four-player support from the presence of multiple controller ports or wireless pairing alone.

Controller checklist

  • Is the controller included, optional, or sold separately?
  • Does it connect by USB, Bluetooth, a proprietary wireless receiver or a console-specific port?
  • Does the target game recognize it, or is it only intended for a specific classic application?
  • Can each player use a compatible controller at the same time?
  • Can buttons be remapped for the system and game you want?

Verify television compatibility step by step

  1. Inventory the TV inputs. Identify available HDMI inputs and whether you are trying to use an older CRT set instead. HDMI is directly advertised for Atari 2600+, Atari 7800+, Analogue Pocket when used with its Dock, and Analogue 3D.
  2. Match the console’s output. A direct HDMI console can connect without a dock. Pocket requires the separate Analogue Dock for HDMI television play.
  3. Check the image format. Atari 7800+ offers 4:3 and widescreen settings. Select the format that suits the game and preserves the proportions you prefer; a widescreen option does not redesign every original game.
  4. Confirm CRT support explicitly. Analogue 3D excludes CRT televisions. Do not assume that an HDMI product can drive a CRT through an unlisted adapter.
  5. Check every cable and power item. Atari 2600+ includes HDMI and a USB-C power cable but no USB-C power adapter. Pocket television play requires the Dock in addition to the handheld.
  6. Plan the living-room layout. Leave room for cartridge insertion, wireless receivers, controller charging and ventilation, and place the console where HDMI and power cables can reach without strain.

Use compatibility lists instead of broad marketing terms

“Most compatible” and “near-perfect compatibility” are useful starting points, not guarantees. Before purchase, search the manufacturer’s official compatibility information for each important title. Pay particular attention to games that use unusual cartridge hardware, third-party releases, regional variants or accessories.

For the Atari 2600+, start with the compatibility information linked from the official product page. For the Atari 7800+, use the details on its product page and confirm the cartridge and region. For Nintendo Switch Online, verify the current catalog, system model and membership tier because Nintendo can change availability. For Pocket and Analogue 3D, confirm that the cartridge family and individual game are supported before adding optional adapters or a controller.

Account for the complete setup, not just the console

A fair comparison includes everything required to play the games you named:

  • Media: physical cartridges you already own, newly purchased games, or access through a membership catalog.
  • Display hardware: an HDMI television for the systems that specify HDMI, and a compatible HDTV plus Dock for Pocket.
  • Power: a suitable USB-C power adapter for the Atari 2600+ package, since its cable is included without the adapter.
  • Expansion hardware: Pocket adapters for Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket/Color, Atari Lynx or TurboGrafx-16-family HuCards; the separate Pocket Dock for television play.
  • Controllers: one compatible controller per player where the game supports multiplayer; a separate 8BitDo 64 controller for Analogue 3D if needed.
  • Ongoing access: a Nintendo Switch Online membership and periodic internet verification when using its classic libraries.

Do not compare a low console price with an all-in setup that includes several adapters, controllers and a membership. List the required items for your actual games first, then compare the resulting setups.

A practical decision process

Choose Atari 2600+ when

  • Your collection centers on Atari 2600 or 7800 cartridges.
  • You want direct HDMI output and a bundled joystick.
  • You are comfortable checking a compatibility list and supplying a USB-C power adapter.

Choose Atari 7800+ when

  • You want the same broad Atari cartridge families with a bundled wireless CX78+ gamepad.
  • You value selectable 4:3 and widescreen presentation.
  • You will verify the exact cartridge list and regional package before purchase.

Choose Nintendo Switch Online when

  • You prefer a curated digital catalog over physical cartridges.
  • You want NES, SNES and Game Boy access in the basic tier, or the additional Expansion Pack libraries.
  • You accept membership-based access, periodic verification and a catalog that may change.

Choose Analogue Pocket when

  • Portable Game Boy, Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance cartridge play is central.
  • You want optional coverage for several additional cartridge families.
  • You are prepared to add the Dock and adapters for television play or expanded media support.

Choose Analogue 3D when

  • Your priority is original N64 cartridges through HDMI.
  • You use an HDMI television rather than a CRT.
  • You have a compatible controller or plan to obtain the separately sold 8BitDo 64 controller.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying for a platform name instead of a title

A console may advertise a system family while excluding particular cartridges, regions or hardware revisions. Build your purchase around a title list and check each entry.

Assuming every classic controller works everywhere

Nintendo’s NES controller is not guaranteed outside NES Classics, and a controller’s physical resemblance does not establish software support. Confirm the exact console, application and connection method.

Forgetting the dock or adapter

Pocket is portable by itself; HDMI television play requires the separate Dock. Additional cartridge families require their own adapters. Include those accessories before deciding that a setup fits your budget.

Assuming “HDMI” means every television

Analogue 3D’s explicit CRT exclusion demonstrates the issue. HDMI compatibility describes the output connection, not universal display support. Check the television type, input and required accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a subscription as a permanent collection

Switch Online classic games can work offline after installation, but periodic membership verification is required and the catalog may change. Keep physical media or another supported option when long-term ownership is essential.

Final checklist before you buy

  1. Write down the exact games and cartridge formats you need.
  2. Decide whether you want physical cartridges, a changing digital catalog or portable play.
  3. Check the official compatibility list for every must-have title.
  4. Match the console’s output to your television, including CRT restrictions.
  5. Add the required dock, adapters, controller(s), power adapter and membership to the setup.
  6. Verify multiplayer support for the specific game, not just the hardware.
  7. Confirm regional availability and the current product configuration before ordering.

The best retro console is the one that runs your chosen games with the media, controller setup and display connection you already have—or can realistically complete. Starting with that checklist prevents the most expensive mistake: buying a convincing-looking system that cannot play the games or connect to the screen you intended to use.
