How to Choose a Retro Gaming Console for Classic 1980s Games

The best retro console is the one that contains the games you actually want to play. Choose the NES Classic Edition for its fixed library of 30 original NES games, the Super NES Classic Edition for its curated SNES-era lineup, or the Atari 2600+ if you want to use compatible Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. All three connect to modern displays over HDMI, but their game access, power accessories, multiplayer options and save systems differ.

Start with the games, not the console shape

“1980s games” covers several hardware generations. Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games and Atari 2600 titles have different controllers, audiovisual styles and cartridge formats. A compact console that looks right on a shelf can still be the wrong choice if its library misses your must-play titles.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Write down five to ten games you most want to play. Then identify the original platform for each game. For example, Super Mario Bros., Metroid and Mega Man 2 point toward an NES-focused system, while Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound and F-ZERO belong to the SNES generation. Atari 2600+ makes sense when your list is built around Atari cartridges rather than Nintendo releases.

Decide between a fixed library and physical cartridges

Fixed Nintendo libraries

The NES Classic Edition and Super NES Classic Edition are closed, ready-to-play systems. Nintendo states: “No. Additional games cannot be downloaded to the Classic Edition consoles, nor are these consoles compatible with external storage devices.” That means the included list is the complete practical library. You cannot buy a later download, plug in a USB drive or use an original Nintendo cartridge with either mini console.

This approach is convenient when the supplied games match your list. It also makes the purchase easy to evaluate: inspect the official list before paying, rather than assuming a famous franchise is present. The NES page lists 30 games, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Dr. Mario, Final Fantasy, PAC-MAN, Castlevania and Mega Man 2. The SNES list targets a later generation and includes Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-ZERO and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Cartridge-based Atari play

Atari 2600+ follows a different path. Atari says it plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges and supplies a 10-in-1 cartridge. “Most” compatible cartridges is not the same as every cartridge: cartridge revisions, regional variants and unusual peripherals can affect support. Look up the exact title and cartridge version in Atari’s compatibility list before treating your existing collection as usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This option is most attractive when you already own cartridges or want a physical-library experience. It is less predictable than a fixed mini console because the final game selection depends on the cartridges you possess and whether each one appears on the compatibility list.

Match the era and controller style to your game list

When an NES Classic Edition fits

Choose the NES model when your priority is Nintendo’s 8-bit catalog and the official 30-game list covers your favorites. It suits a player who wants a single small box, a controller in the familiar NES style and no cartridge hunting. Before buying, check the complete list rather than relying on the console’s name; a particular sequel or arcade conversion may not be included even when related games are.

When a Super NES Classic Edition fits

The Super NES model is the better match for games designed for the 16-bit generation. Its list includes Nintendo’s major platformers and action games as well as role-playing and racing titles. If your must-play list contains Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III or A Link to the Past, compare those names with the official SNES list before considering any other feature.

When Atari 2600+ fits

Atari 2600+ is the relevant choice among these systems for someone whose collection is made of Atari 2600 or 7800 cartridges. The included 10-in-1 cartridge gives you something to play immediately, while compatible original cartridges provide the expansion path. If you do not own Atari cartridges and do not plan to acquire them, a Nintendo fixed-library system may involve less uncertainty.

Compare ownership models before committing

The Nintendo consoles are easiest to understand as complete packages: the games are already in memory, and there is no accessory or software marketplace to manage. Their limitation is permanent. If your favorite title is absent, there is no supported way to add it later. That makes the official game list more important than nostalgia for the hardware shell.

The Atari 2600+ spreads the cost and effort over time. The 10-in-1 cartridge provides an immediate starting point, but a larger library means locating, buying and testing additional cartridges. Used cartridges can vary in label condition, connector cleanliness and regional version. Budget for the games you still need, not just the console, and preserve receipts when a listing claims compatibility without identifying the exact cartridge revision.

There is no dependable universal price comparison here. Nintendo availability and second-hand pricing can change substantially, while Atari’s official page links to Amazon stores in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. Treat any displayed price as a live-market figure, check whether the item is new or used, and compare the included controller, cables and return policy.

Check the modern-TV connection and power requirements

All three described systems are designed for contemporary displays, but the accessories in the box are not identical. Nintendo says each Classic Edition system is compatible with standard HDMI inputs on televisions and monitors. Atari specifies HDMI output and includes an HDMI cable.

Nintendo power setup

Nintendo documents USB power using a Type A-to-micro-B cable and a 5V/1A adapter. Confirm that your intended adapter provides the stated 5-volt, 1-amp output and that you have the correct cable. A console can have the right video cable and still fail to start if the power arrangement is missing or unsuitable.

Atari power setup

Atari’s listed package includes a USB-C cable but not a USB-C power adapter. Plan for a compatible adapter before the console arrives. The HDMI cable is included, so the missing item is power hardware rather than video connectivity.

Display and cable checks

  • Identify an unused HDMI input on the television or monitor.
  • Connect HDMI directly first, then select that input with the display remote.
  • Use the specified USB cable and a suitable power adapter; do not assume a phone charger has the required output without checking its label.
  • If the screen remains blank, confirm the display input and reseat both HDMI ends before investigating the console.

Plan for multiplayer before you buy

Controller contents and extra-accessory requirements can determine whether a console works for a particular family or group. Nintendo UK states that playing two-player NES games requires additional accessories sold separately. If local multiplayer is a deciding factor, verify the exact controller package for the listing you are considering and budget for any second controller or adapter rather than assuming the miniature console includes everything.

Understand how saving works

Nintendo’s Classic Edition support information says each preloaded game has four Suspend Point slots. A Suspend Point records the current state so you can return to it later; games that originally supported in-game saving may retain that original mechanism as well.

There is an important data-management warning: saving progress to a Suspend Point, or resuming from one, can overwrite newer in-game progress. Establish a simple routine: finish an in-game save when the title supports it, create a Suspend Point only when you need a snapshot, and avoid loading an older snapshot after making newer progress unless you intend to replace it.

No equivalent save feature is established in the cited Atari 2600+ product information. Treat the Atari system as a cartridge-playback purchase unless the documentation supplied with your particular unit specifies a separate save method.

Use this step-by-step buying process

  1. Build a must-play list. Write down the actual games, not just a preferred brand or console color.
  2. Identify each game’s original platform. Separate NES, SNES, Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 titles; similarly named games can be different releases.
  3. Choose your access model. Select a Nintendo Classic Edition if its fixed list is sufficient. Select Atari 2600+ if compatible cartridges are central to your plan.
  4. Verify every critical title. Use Nintendo’s official NES or SNES list, or Atari’s compatibility list for a specific cartridge. A console name alone is not proof that a game is included or supported.
  5. Audit the hookup. Confirm an HDMI input, the required USB cable and power adapter. For Atari 2600+, add the USB-C adapter that the package omits.
  6. Audit multiplayer needs. Count players, check the game’s mode and confirm whether an additional controller or other accessory is sold separately.
  7. Decide how important save states are. Nintendo provides four Suspend Point slots per preloaded game; do not assume the same feature on Atari 2600+.
  8. Check the seller’s condition and contents. A used listing may omit controllers, cables or adapters. Match the listing against the manufacturer’s package description before paying.

Verify cartridge compatibility methodically

For Atari 2600+, make a small inventory before shopping. Record the title printed on each cartridge, whether it is labeled 2600 or 7800, and any regional or special-edition markings. Search each entry in Atari’s compatibility information rather than relying on a seller’s broad statement that “Atari carts work.” If a listing uses a photograph instead of a model description, ask for a clear image of the label and cartridge edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean, undamaged cartridges are still not guaranteed to work if the particular design is outside the supported set. Conversely, a compatible cartridge may need more than one insertion to make reliable contact after decades in storage. Do not force a cartridge into the slot, and keep incompatible or untested games separate from the confirmed collection so another household member does not assume they are interchangeable.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “retro” means every 1980s game

A mini console is not a universal archive. A NES-focused list does not cover the SNES generation, and neither Nintendo system accepts your original cartridge collection. Start with titles and platform generation to prevent an attractive but unsuitable purchase.

Expecting to add games later

Nintendo explicitly rules out downloads and external storage for the Classic Edition consoles. If expandability is a requirement, remove both Nintendo mini systems from your shortlist instead of planning on an unsupported upgrade.

Assuming every Atari cartridge works

Atari’s wording is “most” Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Search the official compatibility information for each cartridge, especially uncommon releases or cartridges with unusual hardware. Keep the result of that check with your purchase notes so you can return an unsuitable unit promptly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the power adapter

The Atari 2600+ package lists a USB-C cable but no adapter. Nintendo’s documented setup also expects a 5V/1A adapter. Check the cable connector and adapter output independently; having one without the other does not complete the setup.

Buying on an inflated used market

Official Nintendo pages establish the feature sets but do not establish current new-stock availability or a fair used price. Atari’s official page says the 2600+ is available and links to regional Amazon listings, but stock, price and condition can change. Compare the seller’s package contents and return terms rather than treating an old list price as a current value.

Confusing a game title with a platform version

Several 1980s franchises appeared on more than one system, and a title’s name alone does not identify the version included. Confirm the platform and edition in the Nintendo list or the Atari compatibility list. This is especially important when a seller advertises a franchise rather than the exact game release.

Setup checklist for the first evening

  • Place the console where the HDMI and USB cables can reach without tension.
  • Connect HDMI to the display, then connect the console’s specified power cable to a suitable adapter.
  • Turn on the display and select the matching HDMI input.
  • For Nintendo systems, browse the built-in list and test the controller before starting a long game.
  • For Atari 2600+, insert the included 10-in-1 cartridge first, then test each owned cartridge only after confirming compatibility.
  • Create a Suspend Point on a Nintendo game and practice returning to it before relying on the feature for a long session.
  • If two-player NES play is planned, connect the separately required accessory before inviting a second player.

Which console should you choose?

Choose the NES Classic Edition when your must-play list is primarily original NES software and the 30 included games contain the titles you want. Choose the Super NES Classic Edition when your list is built around SNES-era games such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid or EarthBound. Choose the Atari 2600+ when playing a compatible Atari cartridge collection is the central requirement and you are prepared to supply a USB-C power adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In every case, make the decision from the exact game list and compatibility information first. HDMI makes the physical hookup relatively straightforward; library limits, cartridge support, controller requirements and saving behavior are what determine whether the console will remain useful after the novelty of the hardware wears off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which retro console has the games I want to play?

Start with the official list, not the console’s appearance. The NES Classic Edition has 30 preinstalled NES games, while the Super NES Classic Edition has a separate SNES lineup including Super Mario World, Super Metroid, EarthBound, Final Fantasy III, F-ZERO and A Link to the Past. Atari 2600+ is the match for compatible Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges.

Can I add games to the NES Classic or Super NES Classic?

No. Nintendo says additional games cannot be downloaded and the Classic Edition consoles do not support external storage. The included game list is therefore the practical library.

Can I play my old Atari cartridges on a modern TV?

Atari 2600+ provides HDMI output and is designed to play most Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges. Check Atari’s compatibility list for each exact cartridge before buying; compatibility is not universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Atari 2600+ come with a power adapter?

The listed package includes a USB-C cable but not a USB-C power adapter. Plan to supply a suitable adapter separately. Atari does include an HDMI cable.

How many games come with the NES Classic Edition?

Nintendo’s NES Classic Mini product page lists 30 preinstalled NES games, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Dr. Mario, Final Fantasy, PAC-MAN, Castlevania and Mega Man 2.

How do saves work on Nintendo’s Classic Editions?

Each preloaded game has four Suspend Point slots. Games that originally supported in-game saves may retain them. Be careful: saving to or resuming from a Suspend Point can overwrite newer in-game progress.

Do I need a second controller for two-player NES games?

Nintendo UK says additional accessories are required for two-player NES play and are sold separately. Confirm the controller contents and multiplayer requirements for the exact regional package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are current prices and availability guaranteed?

No. Nintendo’s feature pages do not establish current stock or a fair used price. Atari’s official page links to regional Amazon listings, but price, stock and condition can change, so compare live listings and package contents.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose by the exact games first. The NES Classic Edition is the straightforward 30-game NES option, the Super NES Classic Edition serves its distinct SNES library, and Atari 2600+ is the expandable cartridge-based choice for most Atari 2600 and 7800 collections. Verify every title, HDMI and power requirement, multiplayer accessory and save behavior before you buy.
