The right replacement appliance is the one that physically fits its opening and delivery route, handles your household’s actual workload, and remains affordable after energy, water, delivery, installation and disposal costs. Start by measuring and documenting the installation space, then shortlist models that meet those constraints before comparing efficiency and price.
For refrigerators and dishwashers, use the model’s installation manual, EnergyGuide estimates and ENERGY STAR criteria as your baseline. Treat published savings as standardized estimates rather than promises: local utility rates, usage, configuration and service fees determine what you will really spend.

Start with the constraints you cannot change
A low price is irrelevant if the appliance cannot enter the house, clear a cabinet, connect safely or open fully. Make a short list of non-negotiables before looking at features:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The maximum width, height and depth of the opening, measured at several points.
- Required ventilation and installation clearances from the exact model manual.
- Door, drawer and hinge movement without striking an island, wall or adjacent cabinet.
- Electrical, water, drain, gas or ventilation connections required for that appliance.
- The complete delivery route, including exterior doors, interior doorways, halls, turns and stairs.
- The total installed budget, including recurring utility costs and one-time services.
These checks prevent the most expensive mistake: buying a model that looks suitable in a showroom but cannot be installed without construction, returned at a fee or left outside.

How do I measure for a new refrigerator?
Consumer Reports’ refrigerator guide, updated July 10, 2026, recommends measuring both the opening and the route to it. Record each dimension in writing and keep the measurements with the model comparison sheet.
Measure the opening at multiple points
- Width: Measure near the front, middle and back of the opening. Use the narrowest result. Include trim, baseboards and any part of a wall or cabinet that reduces the usable opening.
- Height: Measure at the left, center and right. Uneven floors or ceilings can make the opening smaller than one measurement suggests.
- Depth: Measure from the rear wall to the front edge of the surrounding counter or cabinets. Note whether the measurement includes a baseboard, outlet box or other obstruction.
- Floor and wall conditions: Record slopes, bowed walls and protruding molding. A nominal opening can be smaller at the point where the appliance actually has to pass.
Compare these minimum opening measurements with the candidate’s published body dimensions and its installation diagram. Do not assume that a listed width is the same as the required opening width; hinges, handles, leveling feet and ventilation zones can add space.
Allow ventilation and working clearances
Refrigerators need airflow around specified sides, the top and the rear. The required distances vary by model, so use the candidate appliance’s installation manual rather than a generic rule. Insufficient clearance can obstruct cooling airflow, prevent doors from opening and invalidate an installation plan.
Check the full depth with doors and handles installed. A refrigerator may project beyond the counter even when its cabinet fits the opening. A counter-depth label usually means less projection, not a guaranteed flush fit; verify the actual product dimensions, hinge position and usable capacity.
Check door swing and drawer travel
Open both doors to their intended angles on the floor plan. Confirm that doors clear walls, an island and neighboring cabinets, and that drawers can extend far enough to remove shelves or bins. Some configurations need additional hinge-side space to open past 90 degrees. Include the swing area in your measurements, not just the appliance box.
Measure the delivery path
Measure every narrow or low point between the unloading location and the kitchen:

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow big a refrigerator should I buy?
Choose capacity from household behavior, not from the largest cabinet that fits. List what you store, how often you shop, whether you freeze meals, and whether a second refrigerator already handles overflow. A larger refrigerator generally consumes more energy; ENERGY STAR states, “Generally, the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption.” The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) also warns that an oversized refrigerator increases purchase cost and wastes energy.
Match capacity to use
- Frequent fresh-food shoppers: Prioritize usable refrigerator shelving, produce-bin layout and door storage over a large freezer section.
- Batch cooks or bulk buyers: Check freezer volume, shelf adjustability and whether large containers fit without blocking airflow.
- Small households: Avoid paying for unused volume if a smaller model meets your shopping pattern.
- Large households: Verify that the stated capacity translates into accessible shelves and drawers; a nominally large interior can be difficult to organize.
Compare usable capacity, exterior dimensions, configuration, door swing and energy use together. A model with a slightly smaller advertised capacity may work better if its layout lets you use all of the interior and still clears the room.
Understand configuration tradeoffs
Top-freezer refrigerators tend to use the least energy, according to ENERGY STAR. DOE FEMP cautions that side-by-side designs and through-the-door ice typically use more energy than some alternatives. Those features can still be worthwhile when eye-level freezer access, narrow door swing or exterior ice access solves a real household problem. Treat the extra consumption as a deliberate tradeoff rather than an automatic upgrade.
How do I check fit for an appliance other than a refrigerator?
Refrigerator measurements do not transfer safely to washers, dryers, ranges, ovens, freezers or dishwashers. The current evidence does not establish universal dimensions or clearance rules across appliance categories. For each exact model, obtain the installation guide before purchase and verify:
Recommended Free Tools
- Required opening width, height and depth, including trim and leveling space.
- Electrical circuit, outlet location, gas line, water supply, drain and vent requirements.
- Side, rear, top and front clearances for heat, airflow, servicing and door movement.
- Whether the floor can support the appliance and whether leveling is required.
- Delivery access, stair restrictions and any need to remove doors or panels.
For a dishwasher, measure the opening under the counter and confirm that the door can drop without hitting the plinth or opposite cabinet. Check the water inlet, drain-loop arrangement, electrical connection and whether a junction box, cord or hose is included. For laundry appliances, verify vent diameter and route for a dryer, drain and supply-hose reach for a washer, and stacking-kit compatibility if machines will be vertical. These are model-specific checks; rely on the manufacturer’s installation instructions for the final dimensions.

How do I know whether an appliance is energy-efficient?
Use EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR for different purposes. EnergyGuide provides standardized estimates of annual energy use and operating cost so that similar models can be compared. ENERGY STAR certification indicates that the model meets the program’s applicable efficiency criteria for its category. Neither label guarantees a particular household’s bill.
Read EnergyGuide as a comparison estimate
Compare models in the same product class and use the annual kilowatt-hour, water-use or operating-cost estimate as a common baseline. Your actual cost changes with local electricity and water rates, room temperature, load size, settings, maintenance and how often the appliance runs. A model’s estimate is most useful when the competing models are evaluated under the same assumptions.
Use ENERGY STAR certification appropriately
Certification is a screening tool: it identifies products that meet the program’s current category requirements. Verify that the exact model and product class qualify. Criteria can change, and a standard dishwasher is evaluated differently from a compact dishwasher.
Published examples and their assumptions
| Product or comparison | Published figure | Conditions and limits |
|---|---|---|
| ENERGY STAR refrigerator versus models meeting the federal minimum efficiency standard | About 9% more energy efficient | ENERGY STAR refrigerator guidance accessed October 13, 2026; this is a program estimate, not a household guarantee. |
| Replacing an old refrigerator with a certified refrigerator and recycling the old unit | About $150 in energy savings over a 12-year product lifetime | ENERGY STAR estimate; the result depends on the comparison, recycling and usage assumptions used by the program. |
| DOE FEMP modeled 18.1-cubic-foot automatic-defrost top-freezer refrigerator | $45 estimated lifetime energy-cost savings | 2023 FEMP example using stated federal electricity-price assumptions, a 16.2-year assumed life and December 2023 criteria. It is not interchangeable with the ENERGY STAR estimate above. |
| DOE FEMP modeled ENERGY STAR dishwasher | $94 estimated lifetime combined utility-cost savings | 2023 example assuming 215 cycles per year, federal electricity and water/sewer rates and a 15.2-year assumed life. |
| ENERGY STAR standard dishwasher | Maximum 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle | Criteria effective July 19, 2023. Compact dishwashers have separate thresholds; compare within the correct class. |
The refrigerator figures differ because they use different reference products, lifetimes and utility assumptions. Keep each estimate tied to its stated conditions instead of combining them into one universal savings claim.
What does a new appliance really cost after delivery and installation?
Build a total-cost worksheet before choosing a model. The purchase price is only the first line.
Separate one-time and recurring costs
| Cost category | What to include | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Appliance price | Exact model, configuration, capacity and finish. | Save the written quote, including taxes and any time-limited promotion. |
| Energy and water | EnergyGuide annual estimates and any relevant water-use figure. | Apply your local utility rates and realistic cycles or usage. |
| Delivery | Standard delivery, stairs, long carry, restricted access or redelivery charges. | Request a local quote tied to your address and route. |
| Installation or hookup | Connection, leveling, venting, electrical work or plumbing labor. | Confirm exactly what the seller’s service includes and what requires a licensed contractor. |
| Haul-away | Removal, recycling or disposal of the old appliance. | Ask whether the old unit must be disconnected and placed at the curb. |
| Required supplies | Hoses, cords, shutoff valves, adapters, stacking hardware or anti-tip hardware. | Compare the installation manual with the parts included in the box. |
Consumer Reports’ retailer guidance, updated January 19, 2023, notes that delivery, installation and haul-away may be included, charged separately or offered through promotions. Terms change, so obtain the complete delivered and installed price from the seller before paying.

Evaluate an efficiency premium
Use a simple lifecycle test: estimate the added upfront price, estimate the annual utility difference using local rates, and multiply by a realistic ownership period. An efficiency premium is easier to justify when plausible lifetime utility savings exceed the added price without relying on optimistic usage. DOE FEMP presents this lifecycle-cost logic, but its examples use federal purchase and utility assumptions; substitute your own figures for a household decision.
What should I compare on a refrigerator shortlist?
After eliminating models that fail the fit check, compare these attributes side by side:
- Usable refrigerator and freezer capacity.
- Cabinet, hinge and handle dimensions, plus required clearances.
- Door swing, drawer extension and access to shelves and bins.
- Configuration, including top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door or side-by-side layout.
- Annual energy use and estimated operating cost.
- Ice-maker and water-dispenser features, with their connection requirements.
- Noise, shelf adjustability and temperature-control features that matter to your household.
- Delivery, installation, haul-away and warranty terms in the actual quote.
Through-the-door ice and water can save daily effort but may increase energy use and add plumbing or maintenance points. Choose them when the convenience is worth the cost and the required water connection is available.
What should I compare on a dishwasher shortlist?
Compare standard models with standard models and compact models with compact models. ENERGY STAR’s criteria are category-specific, so a lower number from one class is not automatically a fair comparison with another.
- Place-setting capacity and rack geometry for your usual cookware.
- Annual energy consumption and water per cycle.
- Estimated annual operating cost under your local utility rates.
- Opening width, height and depth, including door-drop clearance.
- Water inlet, drain and electrical requirements.
- Cycle options that match your habits, such as half-load or delayed start.
- Installation, old-unit removal and whether hoses, cord or fittings are included.
The current ENERGY STAR criteria page lists a maximum of 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle for a standard ENERGY STAR dishwasher under criteria effective July 19, 2023. Compact machines follow separate thresholds, so identify the product class first.

A discount is only real after checking condition, missing accessories, remaining useful life, warranty coverage, return rules and delivery terms. A bundled purchase may reduce service charges, but compare the bundle’s installed total with separate quotes rather than assuming every add-on is cheaper.
A step-by-step buying workflow
- Document the need. Write down the appliance’s job, household size, shopping or laundry pattern, preferred features and any existing utility connections.
- Measure the space. Record width, height and depth at multiple points, then note trim, uneven surfaces, outlets, plumbing and ventilation zones.
- Measure the route. Check every doorway, turn, stair and landing from the delivery vehicle to the installation location.
- Collect installation manuals. For each candidate, verify opening dimensions, clearances, utilities, leveling and service access.
- Build a fit-qualified shortlist. Remove any model that fails a dimension, swing, connection or route requirement before considering aesthetics.
- Compare operating data. Record EnergyGuide annual energy or water estimates and ENERGY STAR status within the correct product category.
- Price the complete job. Add delivery, installation, hookup, haul-away, accessories, taxes and any contractor work to the appliance price.
- Apply local incentives. Check current rebate rules and retain the model number, receipt and recycling documentation required for a claim.
- Confirm the written order. Ensure the quote names the exact model, services, fees, delivery conditions and return policy.
- Prepare the home. Clear the route, protect floors and walls, arrange utility shutoffs and decide how the old appliance will be handled.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Measuring only the cabinet opening
Symptom: The appliance fits on paper but cannot pass a doorway or turn. Fix: Measure the complete delivery route before ordering and ask the seller for its delivery-access requirements.
Using a nominal dimension as a guaranteed fit
Symptom: Handles, hinges or ventilation clearance cause interference. Fix: Compare the installation drawing and all listed dimensions, not just the headline width or a counter-depth label.

Choosing capacity by exterior size alone
Symptom: The household pays for unused volume or cannot organize the interior. Fix: Match usable shelves, bins and freezer space to actual shopping and cooking habits.
Treating an efficiency label as a bill prediction
Symptom: The utility bill differs from the label estimate. Fix: Recalculate with local rates, realistic cycles, room conditions and household behavior. Keep the standardized estimate for comparing similar models.
Assuming services are included
Symptom: The delivered price increases at checkout or the installer lacks a required part. Fix: Get a written quote listing delivery, stairs, hookup, haul-away, cords, hoses and other supplies.
Ignoring category-specific requirements
Symptom: A dishwasher, washer or dryer needs a connection or clearance the room does not provide. Fix: Read the exact installation manual and arrange qualified electrical, gas or plumbing work where required.

When should you replace rather than repair?
Use the same worksheet for a repair decision: compare the repair quote and expected remaining life with the installed price and operating cost of a fit-qualified replacement. A replacement becomes more compelling when the existing appliance is unreliable, cannot meet current capacity needs, lacks a required safety or utility connection, or has substantially higher estimated consumption. Do not assume that a newer model always pays back quickly; use local rates and a realistic ownership period.
