How to Choose a React Animation Library for Your Project

Choose a React animation approach by matching the interaction to its control model, then verify feature coverage, production bundle impact, React compatibility and licensing.

Choose a React animation approach by the interaction you need, not by a universal “best library” ranking. Use CSS for a small, isolated effect; evaluate Motion for declarative, state-driven interface animation; consider React Spring for hook-based spring values; and look at GSAP when imperative control and complex, changeable timelines are central. Before deciding, verify feature fit, production bundle impact, React compatibility, and the license terms for your product.

Start with the animation you need

First identify what the interface must do. A hover color change, a component entering or leaving the page, a drag gesture, and a long sequence of coordinated motion are different problems. A library is useful only if its control model and features suit the interaction.

  • One small, self-contained effect: Try CSS before adding a dependency. Motion’s documentation says, “For simple, self-contained effects (like a color change on hover) a standard CSS transition is a lightweight solution.”
  • State-driven interface motion: Consider a declarative React API when animation should respond to component state and props.
  • Interactive spring behavior: Evaluate whether a hook-and-value model fits the component and how you need to start, stop, or set motion.
  • Precisely sequenced choreography: Consider an imperative timeline when direct control over sequence and playback is important.

Also list any required gestures, scroll behavior, layout transitions, exit animations, SVG work, or shared-element movement. Check these against the library’s documented API rather than assuming that a popular package covers your exact case.

Compare the control models and documented fit

Approach Control model Documented fit What to verify
CSS Styles and transitions, typically driven by classes or state Small, isolated effects such as a hover color change Whether the interaction needs sequencing, gesture handling, or lifecycle-aware enter and exit behavior
Motion for React Declarative, with motion-prefixed elements and props such as animate, whileHover, and exit Motion documents hover, tap, focus, and drag gestures; scroll-triggered and scroll-linked animation; layout and shared-layout animation; exit animation through AnimatePresence; and SVG support Which API and feature package you will ship, how it fits your component architecture, and the resulting production bundle
React Spring Hook-driven spring values; useSpring returns an API that can start, stop, or set values The getting-started guide describes interactive, data-driven animated UI components and use of animated elements React-version compatibility and whether its spring-value model suits the interaction; the introductory guide does not establish comparative speed, size, or overall capability
GSAP Imperative control, commonly integrated with React through refs and timelines, as characterized by Motion’s comparison A candidate when direct timeline control and complex choreography matter Prototype the integration in your React architecture; the mutable-timeline comparison is Motion’s characterization, not an independent evaluation

When Motion is a strong first candidate

Motion is the successor name to Framer Motion. Its documented React setup is npm install motion, with imports from motion/react. The API uses motion-enabled elements and animation props, making it a natural candidate when changes in React state or props should drive the interface. The breadth of documented gestures, scroll effects, layout transitions, exit animation, and SVG support can reduce the need to stitch together separate mechanisms for those interactions. See Motion for React: Get started.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not select it just because an effect can be animated. For a simple transition, CSS may be sufficient. For more involved behavior, confirm that the documented APIs cover the exact lifecycle and interaction you need.

When React Spring may fit better

React Spring’s getting-started guide centers on @react-spring/web, animated element wrappers, and the useSpring hook. Its returned API lets a component start, stop, or set spring values. That model is worth evaluating when those values and controls map cleanly to an interactive, data-driven component. The introductory documentation is not evidence that React Spring is universally faster, smaller, or more capable than alternatives. See React Spring: Getting started.

Check React compatibility before installing

The guide distinguishes React 19 and later from earlier releases: it shows @react-spring/web for React 19+ and @react-spring/web@9 for versions below 19. Confirm the installed React version and current package guidance before copying either command.

When GSAP merits a prototype

GSAP is worth testing when a sequence needs direct imperative control or the timeline must change while playback is underway. Motion’s comparison describes GSAP as imperative and ref-oriented in React and points to mutable timelines as a reason to use it for tracks that may be added or removed after playback starts. That description comes from Motion, which publishes the comparison, so treat it as a reason to investigate rather than a neutral verdict. Build a small prototype in the same component and lifecycle patterns your application will use. See Motion’s GSAP vs Motion comparison.

Measure bundle impact without mixing unlike figures

Package-size claims are meaningful only when they describe comparable entry points, features, compression, and build conditions. Motion’s documentation illustrates why: its React bundle guide says the regular motion component cannot be tree-shaken below 34kb in the described setup, while m with LazyMotion can bring initial render to just under 4.6kb with features loaded separately. It also describes domAnimation and domMax feature packages with different capability trade-offs. These are Motion-published figures, not a promise about every build. See Motion’s bundle-size guidance.

Motion’s comparison page separately lists Motion mini animate() at 2.6kb, full animate() at 18kb, and GSAP at 23kb. Those figures refer to different APIs and configurations from the React-specific figures above, so they should not be treated as a direct React-library league table. The same comparison reports Motion benchmarks of 2.5 times faster than GSAP for animating from unknown values and 6 times faster between different value types. Those are Motion’s own claims; the available evidence does not independently reproduce them or review their methodology.

Read the license in the context of your product

GSAP’s published standard license describes a no-charge license that covers commercial use subject to its terms. The license defines prohibited use around tools that let users build visual animations without code in a way that competes with Webflow’s visual animation-building capabilities. The page gives an effective date of April 30, 2025, a last-modified date of May 30, 2025, and says Webflow may update the license. If your product embeds a visual animation builder, read the current terms carefully and seek qualified advice if the boundary affects your plans. See the GSAP Standard License.

Make the decision with a short project checklist

  • Interaction: Name the exact effect and its lifecycle, including whether it enters, exits, responds to input, follows scroll, or coordinates a sequence.
  • Integration: Decide whether component state, spring values, CSS, or imperative timelines provide the clearest control model for your team.
  • Feature fit: Confirm the APIs needed for gestures, layout, SVG, or other required behavior in current documentation.
  • Payload: Measure the production build with the imports and features you actually intend to ship.
  • Compatibility and license: Verify React-version requirements and read current license terms against the product you are building.
  • Accessibility: Make reduced-motion behavior a project requirement. The documentation reviewed here does not establish implementation details, so consult dedicated accessibility guidance and test the experience.

For an initial shortlist, start with CSS for isolated effects, Motion for broad declarative interface needs, React Spring when its hook-driven values fit, and GSAP when timeline control is the decisive requirement. Then validate the shortlist against a representative interaction and your actual build.
