The right PS5 rhythm game is the one whose songs you will actually play and whose controls feel natural—not necessarily the game with the largest advertised catalog. Match your preferred artists and genres first, then choose between drum patterns, stage-style button inputs, or VR motion controls. Finally, price the base game together with the specific packs or subscription access you need and confirm whether you already own the required hardware.
For Japanese pop, anime, game music and an arcade-drum feel, start with Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival. For a library built around Final Fantasy, choose Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. If you want to swing motion controllers in VR, compare Beat Saber and Synth Riders; consider Pistol Whip if its action-oriented presentation appeals to you. The sections below show how to make that choice without confusing song count, downloadable content, and actual play style.

What makes one PS5 rhythm game a better choice than another?
“Best” depends on four separate decisions:
- Music fit: Are your favorite tracks in the base game, a paid pack, a subscription catalog, or not available on the platform?
- Physical interaction: Do you want to strike drum patterns, press buttons along a stage route, or move your arms in three-dimensional space?
- Equipment: Will a standard DualSense-style controller work, or do you need a compatible drum peripheral, VR headset and motion controllers?
- Total ownership cost and support: How much will the base game plus the music you want cost, and is the PlayStation version still receiving content or multiplayer support?
A headline song total cannot answer those questions by itself. A smaller, focused catalog can be a better purchase than hundreds of tracks in genres you never play. Conversely, a broad catalog may be poor value if your desired songs are locked behind several packs.

Choose the music before you choose the game
Make a short list of ten to twenty songs, artists or franchises you would genuinely replay. Then check where each item appears:
- Included in the base game: No recurring purchase is needed for that track, although online features may have separate platform requirements.
- Included in a music pass: You may gain a large rotating or expanding catalog, but access depends on keeping the pass active and on the service’s current terms.
- Sold as downloadable content: You pay for a specific pack and retain access under the store’s licensing terms.
- Unavailable on your platform or in your region: A song listed in a trailer, another edition or another territory is not proof that you can buy it on your PS5.
Search the current in-game or PlayStation Store catalog for exact track names rather than relying on genre labels. “Anime” or “pop” can cover very different styles, while a franchise-focused game can omit artists you expected to find. Music licensing is regional and can change after launch; the store page for your account region is the final check.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival is the clearest non-VR fit for Japanese music
Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival suits players who want the physical logic of an arcade drum: hit the center for one note type, the rim for another, and follow increasingly complex patterns. The PlayStation description lists four difficulty modes, so beginners can learn the timing before moving to dense charts. It also supports a compatible Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Controller for PS5, PS4 and Windows PC, although the game remains playable with a normal controller.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its music identity is unusually specific. The catalog spans Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID and game music alongside other categories, making it a natural first candidate for players who use those terms when searching for a rhythm game. Bandai Namco states that the base game contains 76 songs and that the paid Taiko Music Pass gives access to more than 700 additional songs. Those are publisher figures and should be treated as current catalog claims rather than a guarantee that every song is permanently available in every country.
Modes and multiplayer
- Story mode: A structured single-player route for learning the game and progressing through its presentation.
- Taiko Land: Local activities support up to four players, useful for a shared-screen session.
- Dondoko Town: An online mode for playing and interacting with other players.
Budget checks for Taiko
The Music Pass is an additional paid commitment, and separate music packs are sold as well. Do not assume that buying the pass makes every separately sold pack unnecessary. Compare the base catalog, the pass’s current track list, and the individual packs containing your must-have songs. If you are considering the dedicated drum, confirm the exact model, regional availability and current compatibility on the official PlayStation listing; the listing establishes compatibility but does not guarantee a particular retailer’s stock.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is the focused choice for Final Fantasy fans
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is built around one franchise rather than a broad licensed-pop library. Square Enix describes three game modes, more than 100 Final Fantasy characters, and local and online multiplayer. Its standard game is listed at 385 tracks across the Final Fantasy series. That focus is its main advantage: if the music you want comes from Final Fantasy games, you can evaluate the purchase by checking which entries and arrangements are represented instead of sorting through unrelated genres.
The interaction is stage-based rather than drum simulation or free-form VR motion. You follow visual cues and execute timed inputs while your party and characters provide a role-playing layer. This makes it suitable for players who prefer a conventional seated controller and a progression system, and for households that want local play without buying a drum or headset.

“Final Fantasy music” is not one uniform playlist. Confirm the edition you are buying and read the downloadable track list for the particular games you care about. A song associated with a later title, spin-off or special arrangement may belong to a different edition or add-on. Territory can affect availability, so use the store page shown to your PSN account.
Beat Saber: excellent motion play, but its PlayStation support has a fixed cutoff
Beat Saber is a VR rhythm game in which you slash incoming blocks in time with music. The physical action is immediate and spatial: you are reading direction, timing and arm movement rather than tapping a two-dimensional chart. It is a strong match for players who specifically want immersive motion control and already have the required PlayStation VR headset and controllers.
Its PlayStation catalog needs a date-qualified decision. The official support information says that songs and music packs released on or before June 18, 2025 remain available for purchase. It identifies Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra,” released June 5, 2025, as the last PlayStation content release in that information. PlayStation multiplayer ended on February 26, 2026, while customer support continues. Therefore, do not buy the PlayStation edition expecting new music drops or an active multiplayer service. The existing catalog can still be worthwhile if your desired packs are already available and you are comfortable with a finished content schedule.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Synth Riders offers social VR and adjustable motion challenges
Synth Riders is another VR-first option, but its movement vocabulary differs from saber slashing. You reach, catch and guide targets, and play modifiers can alter how demanding the patterns feel. PlayStation’s guide lists a local Party mode and online multiplayer for up to 10 players, which gives it a different social profile from a purely solo VR purchase.
Recommended Free Tools
Optional downloadable content includes songs and stages from acts such as Gorillaz, Bruno Mars and The Offspring. Check the exact pack contents before buying: an artist’s presence in promotional material does not mean every song by that artist is included. Synth Riders is most compelling when you want electronic or licensed music, room-scale movement and a multiplayer group that will use the party features.
Where Pistol Whip fits
PlayStation’s rhythm and music-game guide includes Pistol Whip among its VR recommendations. It presents music-driven action built around shooting and movement rather than a conventional drum chart or stage-button sequence. The reviewed information does not provide a comparable song-count figure, so catalog size should not be used to rank it against the other games in this guide. Choose it for the action format and VR presentation, then inspect the current store description for its scenarios, music and add-on details.
Match the game to the hardware you already own
Hardware can change the practical winner more than a genre label does.
If you have only a PS5 and a standard controller
Start with Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival or Theatrhythm Final Bar Line. Both are designed to work without VR. Taiko’s dedicated drum is optional, while Theatrhythm keeps its stage inputs on the standard controller.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you own or plan to buy PlayStation VR equipment
Compare Beat Saber, Synth Riders and Pistol Whip. Confirm the exact headset and motion-controller requirements on the current store page for your PS5 model and territory. Do not infer compatibility from a trailer or from a version sold on another platform.
If you want a physical instrument
Taiko is the relevant choice among these options because the PlayStation listing explicitly confirms compatibility with a Taiko no Tatsujin Drum Controller. A peripheral changes the feel, noise level, storage and budget of the setup, so consider whether you will play standing or seated and whether other household members need access to the television.
Calculate total cost instead of comparing base-game prices
Use this formula for each candidate:
Total first-year budget = base game + the music pass period you will use + must-have music packs + required hardware.
Leave out optional purchases that do not contain songs you want. For Taiko, price the pass and any separate packs against your personal list; buying both without checking overlap can waste money. For Theatrhythm, compare the edition and any track add-ons tied to your favorite Final Fantasy entries. For VR games, include the headset and controllers if you do not already own them. Store prices and downloadable-content availability vary by region and can change, so record the price shown in your account rather than copying a figure from another country.
A practical decision process
- Write your must-play music list. Include exact tracks, artists, anime, game series or genres. Ten specific songs are more useful than “a big catalog.”
- Classify each candidate’s music access. Mark every desired item as base game, pass, individual pack or unavailable.
- Test the physical action in your imagination. Drum hits suit players who enjoy pattern accuracy; stage inputs suit players who want a seated chart with character progression; VR games suit players who want arm movement and spatial timing.
- Confirm equipment. Check whether a standard controller is enough, whether Taiko’s compatible drum is worth adding, or whether the VR title requires hardware you do not own.
- Check social needs. Count the people who will play locally, whether online play matters, and whether the mode is still supported on PlayStation.
- Price only the content you will use. Add the base game, relevant pass or packs and hardware. Ignore a low headline price if your preferred songs require several extras.
- Recheck the store page immediately before purchase. Verify region, edition, song list, accessory compatibility and current support notices.
Which game fits common player priorities?
| Your priority | Most logical starting point | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID or game music with drum patterns | Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival | Its catalog identity and drum-focused play directly match those preferences | Whether favorite songs are in the base game, Music Pass or a separate pack; optional drum-controller availability |
| Final Fantasy soundtrack and character progression | Theatrhythm Final Bar Line | Focused franchise catalog, stage play and party elements | Edition and downloadable tracks for the specific Final Fantasy titles you follow |
| Immersive saber motion and an established PlayStation catalog | Beat Saber | Direct block-slashing interaction and a large existing pack history | Required VR equipment, desired pack availability and the fact that PlayStation multiplayer and new content have ended |
| Motion play with local party and large online groups | Synth Riders | Modifiers, Party mode and online play for up to 10 players | Headset compatibility and the exact songs in optional artist packs |
| VR music combined with shooting and action | Pistol Whip | Action-led format rather than drum or stage charts | Current scenarios, music and add-on information; no comparable song total is established here |
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by song count alone
A large number can hide a poor genre match or paid access requirement. Start with your own track list and label the purchase type for each song.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Assuming every version has the same catalog
Platform, edition and territory can change the available tracks and packs. Read the PS5 listing attached to your account.
Forgetting the subscription condition
A pass can be economical for a heavy player, but its access terms differ from owning an individual pack. Check whether the songs you want remain available while the pass is active.
Buying VR software without checking the room and hardware
VR rhythm games require a compatible headset and motion controllers, plus enough clear space for safe arm movement. Confirm the current requirements before purchase.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Expecting Beat Saber on PlayStation to keep expanding
The PlayStation content cutoff and multiplayer shutdown are material to the value calculation. Treat the available catalog as an established library, not an actively growing service.
Buying a drum controller before confirming the game and region
Taiko’s official listing confirms compatibility with its dedicated drum controller, but model availability and stock are separate questions. Check the exact accessory and return policy in your territory.
Bottom line: choose by the songs you will replay
Pick Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival when Japanese pop, anime, VOCALOID or game music and drum-pattern play are your priority, provided the songs you want fit the base catalog, Music Pass or packs you can afford. Pick Theatrhythm Final Bar Line when Final Fantasy is the reason you are shopping. Choose Beat Saber, Synth Riders or Pistol Whip only if you want VR motion and have confirmed the hardware; for Beat Saber, also accept that PlayStation content and multiplayer have reached their stated endpoints. The strongest purchase is the one that matches your personal playlist, preferred movement and complete setup cost.
