How to choose a Proton version for a game that won’t launch

Start with the Proton version Steam selected for the game. Valve’s own guidance is that most users should use the Proton supplied by the Steam Client. If that default fails, choose an alternative only when a current Proton changelog or compatibility report points to a relevant fix, and test one version at a time. The newest branch is not automatically the right branch.

Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux through Steam. A launch failure can also come from library permissions, graphics drivers, the Steam Linux Runtime, or the game’s own files, so changing Proton repeatedly is not a complete troubleshooting strategy.

What Proton version should you try first?

Leave the game on Steam’s default, client-provided Proton unless you have a specific reason to change it. The default is the baseline Valve supports for normal use and receives the broadest general testing. A numbered stable release is intended to arrive after extensive quality assurance and a public release-candidate phase.

Most users should use Proton provided by the Steam Client itself.

That recommendation matters because a game that will not launch is not necessarily using the wrong compatibility tool. A failed start may be caused by an inaccessible library, an unsuitable graphics driver, a runtime problem, corrupted game data, or a game-specific regression. Treat Proton switching as a controlled experiment rather than a sequence of random downgrades and upgrades.

When changing Proton is justified

  • A Proton changelog names your game and describes a fix for its launch, graphics, launcher, controller, video, or copy-protection problem.
  • Current compatibility reports show that a particular branch works for the same game and a closely matching Linux, GPU, and Steam setup.
  • The game recently stopped working after a Proton update and a previous stable branch is identified as a working fallback.
  • Valve has placed a targeted fix in Hotfix or a newer feature in Experimental that directly matches the failure.

If none of those conditions applies, keep the default selected and investigate the system-side causes described later in this guide.

How the Proton branches differ

Steam exposes several Proton flavors with different purposes and different levels of testing. The practical choice is not simply old versus new; it is whether a branch contains a relevant fix and what risk you accept while testing it.

Branch Intended role Testing and update behavior When to try it Main risk or limitation
Stable Normal everyday compatibility Numbered releases follow extensive quality assurance and a public release-candidate phase. First choice for most games and the fallback after testing an experimental branch. A newly fixed game issue may not have reached the stable release yet.
Experimental Public testing of newer Proton features and fixes Newer work is exposed before it becomes part of a numbered stable release. Games that work only with Experimental can be listed in its changelog and are tested for regressions before release. Use when the changelog or a current game report identifies a fix relevant to your title. New changes can introduce regressions in other games.
Hotfix Short-lived targeted repair Usually hosts an older build, but can carry an urgent fix for a new or important game until that fix moves to another flavor. Use only when the specific Hotfix notes cover your game or failure. It may be outdated for unrelated games and can disappear once its fix is integrated elsewhere.
Bleeding Edge Automated development snapshot Built automatically from development work in Proton and graphics-translation components; it is untested. Last-resort diagnostic experiment when a developer or compatibility report explicitly points to it. Valve warns it can damage a game prefix or saves. It is not a normal recommendation.

These roles explain why a newer branch can solve one game while making another worse. A branch is useful because of the change it contains, not because its version number is larger.

Identify the game and system before selecting a branch

The title of the game alone is not enough to prescribe a Proton release. Record the details below before changing anything. They let you match your case to a changelog entry or compatibility report instead of copying a recommendation made for different hardware.

  • Exact game name and edition, including whether it uses a separate launcher or online service.
  • Linux distribution and desktop session, plus whether Steam is installed through the distribution package or another supported packaging method.
  • GPU vendor and model, active graphics driver, and whether the game is running on a laptop’s integrated or discrete GPU.
  • Steam’s currently selected compatibility tool and the date the launch failure began.
  • The visible symptom: no window, an immediate return to the Play button, a launcher error, a black screen, or a crash after the first logo.
  • Whether the game worked previously and what changed immediately before it stopped.

Do not treat a report as a match merely because it names the same game. A report made with another GPU, driver, distribution, or game edition may point to a different cause.

Check for a game-specific fix

Before trying branches, read the current Proton changelog and compatibility reporting for the game. Look for the exact title and for wording that describes your symptom. A useful entry might identify a launch failure, a required launcher workaround, a video playback correction, or a regression introduced by a particular build.

How to interpret a changelog entry

  • Direct match: The entry names your game and the same failure. Select the branch containing that fix.
  • Related component: The entry names a graphics, video, launcher, or input change that your game relies on. Treat it as a reason to test, not proof that it will work.
  • Unrelated change: The entry concerns another title or feature. Do not switch merely because the branch is newer.
  • No entry: Keep the default and move to logging and system checks. Absence of a note does not prove Proton is innocent, but it gives you no evidence for a particular alternative.

Compatibility reports are most useful when they include the Proton flavor, game version, distribution, GPU, driver, and exact error. Prefer recent reports because branch availability and fixes change over time.

Change the Proton version in Steam, one variable at a time

Steam stores the compatibility-tool choice per game. Changing that setting does not establish that the branch caused the problem unless the rest of the test is held constant.

  1. Open Steam and find the game in your Library.
  2. Open the game’s Properties window.
  3. Select Compatibility.
  4. Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Choose the branch identified by the changelog or report. Start with one alternative, not several changes at once.
  6. Close Properties, let Steam finish downloading or updating that tool, and launch the game.
  7. Use the same launch options, display settings, controller, and account state as your baseline test.
  8. Record the result: whether a window appears, how far the game gets, the exact error, and whether the behavior changed.

If the first alternative fails, return to the default or test the next evidence-based branch. Do not change Proton, graphics drivers, launch options, and game files simultaneously; you will not know which action helped or caused a new failure.

A practical test matrix

Test Proton selection What to record Interpretation
Baseline Steam’s default client-provided Proton Launch symptom and any existing error Reference behavior for every later test
Targeted alternative Experimental or Hotfix named in a relevant note Whether the documented symptom changes A positive result supports a branch-specific fix
Stable fallback Numbered stable release recommended by a report Whether the game returns to the baseline or improves Useful for identifying a regression in newer work
Development diagnostic Bleeding Edge only when explicitly indicated Whether the issue changes, plus any prefix or save damage Evidence for a development fix, not a permanent default

When Experimental is the right next test

Experimental is the sensible alternative when the game needs a newer feature or a fix that has not reached a numbered stable release. Valve describes it as a public-testing branch. Its changelog can identify games that currently work only with Experimental, and those games are tested for regressions before release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That testing does not mean every Experimental build is safer for every title. If your game is working on stable, changing to Experimental without a matching fix adds risk without a clear benefit. If Experimental fixes the launch, keep a note of the working branch and check later whether the fix has moved into stable; do not assume the branch will remain unchanged.

When Hotfix is appropriate

Hotfix is not a general-purpose newer stable release. It usually hosts an older build and is maintained briefly for a targeted repair. Valve may put an urgent fix for a new or important game there while the change is prepared for another Proton flavor.

Choose Hotfix when its notes specifically mention your game or the failure you see. If no such note exists, Hotfix is unlikely to be a rational first experiment. Once the fix moves into a regular release, switch to that release rather than keeping Hotfix indefinitely.

Why Bleeding Edge should be a last resort

Bleeding Edge is an automated, untested release from Proton’s Experimental beta development work and graphics-translation components. Valve explicitly warns that it can damage a game prefix or saves. A prefix contains the Windows-style environment Proton creates for a game; damage can affect settings, installed components, or saved data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it only as a controlled diagnostic when a current developer note or compatibility report points to a specific change. Before testing, back up saves that are stored locally and make sure you can restore the game’s configuration. If the game launches under Bleeding Edge, that result is evidence that a development change matters; it is not proof that the branch is suitable for routine play.

Turn on Proton logging when switching versions does nothing

If the default and one evidence-based alternative behave the same, collect a Proton log instead of cycling through every available branch. Add the following to the game’s Steam launch options:

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%

Launch the game once with that option enabled, then inspect the resulting log for the first meaningful error rather than assuming the final line is the cause. The log is diagnostic evidence: it can show a missing library, failed process, graphics initialization problem, permission error, or launcher handoff that a version change cannot correct.

Make the log useful

  • Reproduce the failure once with the baseline Proton selection.
  • Remove unrelated launch options while collecting the baseline log, unless one is required to start the game.
  • Note the exact time of the test and the Proton branch shown in Steam.
  • When comparing branches, keep the game files, account, display, and hardware unchanged.
  • Share the relevant error and your system details when consulting a current compatibility report or reporting a bug; avoid posting personal account information.

After collecting the log, remove PROTON_LOG=1 %command% if you do not need ongoing diagnostics. Leaving extra options in place can complicate later tests.

Check causes that a Proton switch cannot fix

Library permissions and ownership

Valve’s FAQ identifies a Steam library on an NTFS partition that is not owned by the user as a possible reason games fail to launch. The FAQ is old, so treat this as a case to verify, not a universal explanation for every NTFS installation.

Confirm that your user account can read, write, and execute the library and the game’s Proton data. Check the mount and ownership settings using your distribution’s normal tools, and correct them only after confirming the affected path. Do not recursively change ownership of an entire disk without understanding what else uses it.

Graphics drivers

Some newer games require cutting-edge graphics drivers. A driver that is adequate for older titles may fail during graphics initialization for a newer one. Compare your installed driver with the current requirements for your distribution and GPU, and use the log to look for initialization or Vulkan-related errors.

Valve’s requirements documentation includes dated, distribution-specific examples. Those examples should not be treated as universal current minimums for every Linux system. Driver advice must be matched to your GPU, distribution, kernel, and the game’s present requirements.

Steam Linux Runtime

Proton versions use different Steam Linux Runtime generations. Valve’s runtime reporting guidance associates Proton 11 and later with runtime 4.0, Proton 8.0 through 10.0 with runtime 3.0, and Proton 5.13 through 7.0 with runtime 2.0. This mapping helps explain why two Proton branches can expose different system-library behavior even when the game itself has not changed.

Do not infer that a higher runtime number automatically fixes a launch failure. Use the mapping as context for a log or compatibility report, then match the runtime and Proton details to a known issue.

Game files and launchers

A separate game launcher, an interrupted update, or damaged local files can prevent startup under every Proton branch. Use Steam’s built-in file-verification function where appropriate and read the launcher’s exact error. If verification or the launcher reports a service problem, changing Proton is unlikely to repair it.

How to decide whether a test actually worked

Define success before switching. For a launch issue, success means the game reaches its menu or a reproducible playable state, not merely that a process appears briefly. Record whether videos play, the account signs in, the controller is detected, and whether the game remains stable for the same short test session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A branch that reaches the menu but loses saves, fails online services, or crashes at the first level is not a complete fix. Conversely, a branch that changes the error message has still provided useful diagnostic information: it may show that Proton code is involved while pointing to a separate driver or runtime failure.

Protect prefixes and saves while experimenting

Stable, Experimental, and Hotfix tests can still change a game’s compatibility environment. Bleeding Edge carries the clearest documented warning because its automated builds are untested and can damage prefixes or saves.

  • Back up local saves before testing a development branch, especially when cloud synchronization is not confirmed.
  • Do not delete a prefix just because a game fails to launch. Deletion can remove settings or locally stored data and may hide the original evidence.
  • Keep a written record of the branch that last worked and the date of each change.
  • Restore the last known-good branch before making another unrelated change.

If a prefix becomes damaged, stop experimenting and use the game’s documented save-recovery and verification options. A recovery decision depends on where the game stores saves and what the log shows; there is no universally safe deletion command.

A decision path for common situations

The game never launched on this system

  1. Run it once with Steam’s default Proton.
  2. Check current compatibility notes for your exact game and hardware.
  3. If a relevant Experimental or Hotfix fix is named, test that branch once.
  4. If no fix is identified, enable Proton logging and check permissions, drivers, runtime, and game files.

The game worked, then stopped after an update

  1. Record the Proton branch and game update associated with the change.
  2. Check the current changelog for a regression or targeted repair.
  3. Test the documented stable fallback or Hotfix, one at a time.
  4. Keep the branch that restores the same working behavior and report the regression with your log and system details.

The game works only on Experimental

Leave Experimental selected while it is the branch containing the needed fix, but monitor the changelog for the fix moving into a numbered stable release. Retest stable after that transition rather than assuming Experimental is permanently required.

Nothing changes between branches

Stop switching. Generate a log and investigate library ownership, graphics drivers, Steam Linux Runtime behavior, game files, and any separate launcher. Identical behavior across branches is evidence that the failure may be outside Proton’s version-specific code.

What to include in a support request or bug report

A useful report allows someone else to reproduce the same combination of software. Include:

  • Exact game edition and Steam app identity.
  • Distribution, desktop session, GPU model, and graphics-driver version.
  • Proton branch and version used for each test.
  • Whether the library is on an NTFS partition and how it is mounted, if relevant.
  • The visible failure, when it began, and what changed beforehand.
  • The Proton log from a clean reproduction, with personal information removed.
  • Which branch, if any, changed the outcome and whether the result was fully playable.

A report that says only “the newest Proton does not work” cannot distinguish a Proton regression from a permissions or driver problem. Exact details make the next compatibility fix more actionable.

The short rule to remember

Use Steam’s supplied Proton first. Choose Experimental or Hotfix only for a documented, game-specific reason; use Bleeding Edge only as a risky diagnostic experiment. Change one variable at a time, and switch to Proton logging and system checks when version changes stop producing meaningful differences.
