Use AI to turn your needs into a shortlist and a set of questions—not as the final authority on what to buy. Give the assistant your real constraints, require a comparison that shows evidence, then open the manufacturer specifications, seller listing, independent reviews, privacy policy and exact return terms yourself. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that ratings and reviews can be fake or misleading, and its consumer advice is aimed at U.S. shoppers; it is not a statement of consumer law in every country.
What AI is good at—and what it cannot prove
An AI assistant can help you describe an intended use, identify features that matter, organize a long list of products and expose trade-offs. It can also summarize text you provide. Those are useful research and planning tasks.

It cannot, by itself, establish that a product is in stock, that a specification is current, that a seller is reputable, that a review is genuine, or that a return promise applies to the exact item in your cart. A fluent answer may combine different model numbers, confuse regional editions, omit an accessory, or repeat an outdated listing. The FTC materials reviewed do not certify any shopping assistant as accurate, current, unbiased or safe for sensitive information.

How do I use AI to compare products?
1. State constraints, not just a category
“Find me a laptop” gives an assistant too little to work with. Describe the job and the boundaries that would make a purchase unusable. Include:
- Intended use, such as travel, gaming, home office, photography or occasional repair work.
- Must-have features and acceptable substitutes.
- Size, weight, power, connectivity or compatibility requirements.
- Your maximum total budget, including delivery, taxes and unavoidable fees.
- Deal-breakers, such as a noisy fan, proprietary charger, subscription requirement or unavailable local service.
- Delivery constraints, including a date by which you need the item and the destination country or region.
- Whether you are considering new, refurbished, open-box or used condition.
Ask the assistant to separate verified facts from assumptions, identify missing information and provide a source link or source name for every material claim. This is a practical workflow recommendation, not a method tested or endorsed by the FTC.
2. Ask for a decision-ready comparison
Request a table rather than a persuasive paragraph. A useful first-pass table has these columns:

Tell the assistant not to fill unknown cells with guesses. “Not stated” is more useful than a confident invention.
3. Use a prompt that forces uncertainty into the open
I need a product for [intended use]. My must-haves are [features], my maximum delivered budget is [amount], and my deal-breakers are [conditions]. Compare up to five exact models available to [country or region]. For each one, show model number, variant, condition, included items, compatibility, warranty, seller, delivery promise, total cost and return terms. Mark every fact as manufacturer, seller, independent review or customer report. Do not infer missing details. List claims that require me to open the original source.After the first answer, ask: “Which parts could be stale, variant-specific or unsupported? Give me a verification checklist in priority order.”
Verify every important claim at its original source
Manufacturer specifications
Open the manufacturer’s page or manual for the exact model and variant. Check dimensions, weight, capacity, ports, supported standards, power requirements, software compatibility and what is included in the box. A product family page may combine several configurations; the model number on the seller’s listing must match the specification you are reading.

Watch for wording that changes the practical result. “Up to” figures, optional accessories, regional radio bands, maximum theoretical capacity and laboratory battery estimates are not promises that every configuration delivers the same result. Record the date you checked the page if the specification is likely to change.
Seller listing and condition
Confirm who is selling and fulfilling the item. Marketplace pages can place a retailer’s description beside a third-party offer, and the same product title may cover new, refurbished, open-box and used units. Verify the exact condition, serial or model identifier where available, included accessories, warranty provider and whether the seller—not merely the platform—handles returns.
Compare the live listing with the AI summary immediately before payment. If the listing has changed, treat the current page as controlling and discard the earlier summary.
Compatibility, warranty and delivery
Check the requirements that are expensive or impossible to fix later: connector type, operating-system support, regional voltage, dimensions, mounting pattern, consumables and required subscriptions. Read the warranty’s exclusions, duration and geographic limits. A delivery estimate is not the same as a guaranteed arrival date; note whether the promise applies to your address and selected seller.
Can I trust AI product recommendations?
Trust should be assigned to individual claims, not to the assistant’s tone. Classify each statement as one of four levels:

Give greater weight to a must-have feature, safety claim, compatibility statement, delivery promise or return condition than to a minor convenience. If one unverified claim determines the choice, pause the purchase.

Comparison sites can save time, but the FTC cautions that some list or rank only sellers that pay them. A ranking is therefore evidence of how that site selected results, not proof that the top result is best. Look for disclosure of paid placement and search beyond a single list.
How can I tell if product reviews are fake?
Start with several kinds of evidence
The FTC advises shoppers not to rely on star ratings alone because some reviews and ratings are fake or misleading. Read narrative reviews from more than one place, including independent expert coverage when it exists. Examine who wrote the review, where it appeared, when it was posted and whether the reviewer discloses sponsorship, a free product or another incentive.
Customer feedback is most useful when it is specific: the environment in which the item was used, the exact variant, the problem encountered and what happened after contacting the seller. Repeated observations from unrelated reviewers are more informative than a single dramatic complaint or a single five-star endorsement.

- A burst of near-identical reviews in a short period.
- Generic praise or criticism that never identifies a feature, use case or model variant.
- Reviews that describe a different product, color, size or generation from the one you are considering.
- Reviewer profiles with little history, an unusual concentration on one seller or language that appears copied.
- Ratings that conflict sharply with detailed reviews or with independent testing.
- Clear sponsorship, affiliate disclosure or incentives that are not reflected in the wording of the review.
These are reasons to investigate, not proof of fraud. Fake reviews can be positive or negative, so a high average is not automatically safer than a low one.
“Verified” does not mean authentic
Some platforms restrict reviews to purchasers; others allow a wider group to post. FTC staff guidance says neither closed nor open review systems are immune to manipulation. A purchase badge can show that a transaction was recorded, but it does not prove that the text is independent, accurate or about the correct variant. Treat the control as one signal among several.
In 2024, the FTC announced a final rule addressing specified fake or false reviews and testimonials, including certain AI-generated reviews that falsely represent a real person or experience. The rule describes prohibited conduct; it is not a tool that can authenticate an individual review. The practical test remains source diversity, reviewer context, specificity and consistency.

Compare sellers and the full delivered cost
Record the exact manufacturer and model before comparing prices. Then calculate the amount you will actually pay:

Two offers with the same sticker price can have different total costs because of delivery, accessories, taxes or return terms. Save the checkout total and the seller identity; prices and stock can change after an AI assistant has produced its list.

Read the policy for the exact seller and item, not a general help page for the platform. The FTC specifically advises checking refund eligibility, return-shipping responsibility, the number of days available and restocking fees. Sale items may have different terms.

Save a screenshot or PDF of the policy, the item page and your order confirmation. Keep packaging, accessories and tracking information until you have decided to keep the product. If the listing and policy conflict, ask the seller to clarify in writing before checkout.
Protect your privacy when using shopping AI
Do not paste information that is unnecessary for comparing products. Shopping apps may collect contact, purchase and location data, according to FTC consumer guidance. Before sharing anything, read the app’s privacy policy and inspect available settings for personalization, location access, conversation history and data sharing.
- Use a general delivery region instead of a precise address until an address is required.
- Remove names, order numbers, phone numbers, payment details and account credentials from copied text.
- Ask whether a feature requires contact, purchase or location access; disable permissions that are not needed.
- Do not assume that an assistant will delete prompts or uploaded receipts unless its current policy says so.
- For sensitive purchases, perform the comparison locally with public specifications rather than uploading personal documents.
The sources available here do not establish how any named AI shopping assistant stores or uses prompts. Treat data handling as an unresolved product characteristic until you have read the specific service’s current policy.
A practical decision worksheet
Before paying, complete one row for each finalist. This turns a persuasive AI summary into an auditable decision.

Choose the option that meets every non-negotiable requirement with the strongest evidence and acceptable seller and return risk—not necessarily the one with the highest star average or the lowest headline price.
Common AI-shopping failures and how to recover
The assistant combines two variants
Recheck the model number, capacity, color, region and included accessories on the live seller and manufacturer pages. Start a new comparison using only exact identifiers.
A price or availability claim is stale
Open the listing and add the item to the cart far enough to reveal current shipping, taxes and stock status. Save the displayed total and timestamp. Do not rely on a cached answer.
The shortlist contains only one retailer
Search independently for the same model and compare seller identity, total delivered cost, warranty and return terms. A comparison page may rank only paying sellers, so inspect its disclosure and broaden the search.
Reviews disagree
Separate model-wide issues from variant- or seller-specific problems. Check review dates, usage conditions and whether the complaints repeat across independent sources. If the disagreement concerns a must-have feature, seek a manufacturer document or an expert test rather than averaging the stars.
The policy is vague or changes at checkout
Ask the seller for written clarification, capture the policy shown for your exact item and consider a different seller if the answer is not specific. A low price is not a bargain if you cannot determine how a return would work.

- I have read detailed reviews from varied sources and investigated suspicious patterns or incentives.
- I know the seller, fulfillment method, delivery promise and complete delivered cost.
- I know whether the item can be returned, the deadline, required condition, shipping responsibility and fees.
- I saved the listing, policy, price and order communications.
- I shared only the personal information necessary for this purchase and understand the shopping tool’s privacy settings.
If any answer is “no,” ask the AI for questions to investigate—not for reassurance—and finish the missing check before placing the order.
