How to Choose a Powerline Ethernet Adapter for Your Home Network

Choose a powerline Ethernet kit when you need a wired network connection in a distant room but cannot conveniently run Ethernet cable. Buy at least two adapters that use the same powerline standard, connect the first to a router LAN port, and plug the second into a wall outlet near the device you want to network. Treat every advertised speed as a physical-link rating, not a promised internet speed: household wiring, distance, electrical noise and protocol overhead determine the result in your home.

Before buying, verify that the two outlets are connected through usable wiring, that the remote adapter has the ports or Wi-Fi you need, and that the kit can be plugged directly into the wall. A powerline connection can be practical for a television, game console, desktop or access point, but it is not automatically faster or more reliable than Wi-Fi.

What a powerline Ethernet adapter does

A powerline adapter carries network data over the electrical wiring already installed in a building. A basic network has two units:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Router-side adapter: connects to a LAN port on your router with an Ethernet cable and injects the network signal into the electrical circuit.
  • Endpoint adapter: plugs into an outlet in the destination room and provides Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both, depending on the model.

TP-Link describes its setup as requiring at least two units connected to the same electrical circuit. In a home with multiple circuits or electrical phases, the outlets may communicate weakly or not at all. NETGEAR notes that multi-phase installations can cause noticeable performance loss or prevent the adapters from communicating.

Powerline is therefore an installation option, not a guaranteed replacement for Ethernet cabling. The only dependable way to know the delivered rate is to install compatible adapters at the intended outlets and test the link there.

Decide whether powerline fits your installation

Check the physical requirements

Powerline is worth considering when all of these conditions are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your router has an available Ethernet LAN port.
  • The destination device can use Ethernet, or you specifically want a powerline model that provides Wi-Fi.
  • You can identify a wall outlet near the router and another near the destination.
  • Running a dedicated Ethernet cable would be difficult, unattractive or expensive.
  • The two outlets are likely to share a usable electrical path.

If the building has separate electrical phases, long or old wiring, or heavily filtered outlets, the signal may be weak. A different outlet can produce a better result, so avoid judging the technology from a single convenient socket.

Know when another connection is preferable

Use ordinary Ethernet whenever you can install a cable safely and neatly; it provides a dedicated link with fewer variables. Wi-Fi may be simpler for mobile devices and can outperform a weak powerline path. Powerline makes the most sense for a fixed device in a room where cabling is impractical and the wireless signal is unreliable.

Match the powerline standard before you buy

Compatibility is the first buying check, especially when expanding an existing network. Identify the standard printed on your current adapters and compare it with the proposed kit.

Standard or family What the documentation establishes Buying implication
HomePlug AV TP-Link lists physical signal rates of up to 600 Mbps for HomePlug AV. Use the same compatible HomePlug family when adding units; the figure is not expected application throughput.
HomePlug AV2 TP-Link describes AV2 as delivering gigabit-class physical speeds; its 2024 catalog labels the TL-PA7017 KIT “HomePlug AV2 1000 Mbps.” Confirm that an existing HomePlug AV/AV2 network accepts the exact new model and hardware revision.
G.hn TP-Link lists G.hn products with catalog reach of up to 300 m over existing electrical wiring. Do not assume G.hn units will extend a HomePlug AV or AV2 network.

TP-Link explicitly states that its G.hn adapters do not work with HomePlug AV/AV2 adapters. Standards that sound similar are not automatically interoperable, so read the exact product’s compatibility notes rather than relying on the speed number or the brand name.

Interpret advertised speed correctly

Powerline packaging normally reports the maximum physical signal rate under specified conditions. It is not a measurement of internet throughput in your house. The delivered rate can be reduced by:

  • Electrical appliances that introduce line noise.
  • Separate circuits or phases between the adapters.
  • Protocol, encryption and Ethernet overhead.
  • Limits imposed by the adapter’s Ethernet port or the router’s internet service.

For example, TP-Link’s “up to 600 Mbps” HomePlug AV figure is a physical signal-rate claim. Its “up to 300 m over existing electrical wiring” figure for listed G.hn products is catalog copy, not a guaranteed in-home distance. Likewise, “HomePlug AV2 1000 Mbps” for the TL-PA7017 KIT identifies a rated product class, not an independent household speed result.

No independent head-to-head measurements establish a representative throughput for current retail kits in the evidence available here. Compare speed classes to understand the product tier, then plan to assess the actual link after installation.

Compare the endpoint features that affect daily use

Buying axis What to check Why it matters
Ethernet ports Number of ports and each port’s speed rating on the remote adapter. One port supports one wired endpoint unless you add a switch. A slower port can constrain a faster powerline link.
Wi-Fi Wired-only adapter or powerline adapter with a wireless access point. Choose Wi-Fi at the far end only when phones, laptops or other wireless devices need coverage there.
Passthrough outlet Whether the adapter includes a power socket that remains available. A passthrough design can preserve the outlet occupied by the adapter; a direct-plug model does not.
Speed class HomePlug AV, AV2 or G.hn rating and the Ethernet port rating. Useful for comparing product tiers, but not a promise of internet throughput.
Placement flexibility Whether you have a second wall outlet available for testing. Moving the adapter to another outlet may improve a noisy or weak link.

For one wired device

A wired-only adapter with one Ethernet port is usually sufficient for a television, game console or desktop. If two or more wired devices will share the endpoint, select a model with multiple ports or plan to attach an Ethernet switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For wireless coverage

A Wi-Fi powerline extender is appropriate when the remote room needs a local wireless access point. It adds wireless configuration and coverage considerations, so do not pay for that feature if every endpoint will remain wired.

For a frequently used outlet

A passthrough model is useful when the adapter would otherwise consume the only convenient socket. It does not improve the powerline signal by itself; it simply preserves access to power.

Use this buying process

  1. Map the endpoints. Identify the router-side outlet, the destination outlet and every device that must connect at the far end.
  2. Check the electrical path. Consider whether the outlets are on the same circuit and whether the building uses multiple phases. If you cannot determine this, treat performance as uncertain and make sure the retailer’s return policy allows testing.
  3. Identify any existing powerline standard. Read the labels or specifications on current adapters. Do not combine G.hn with HomePlug AV/AV2 unless the manufacturer explicitly documents compatibility.
  4. Set the port requirement. Count the wired devices and check whether the remote Ethernet ports are fast enough for your local network and internet service.
  5. Choose Wi-Fi only when needed. A wireless endpoint can serve mobile devices; a wired-only kit is simpler for fixed equipment.
  6. Decide whether passthrough matters. Select it when losing the occupied wall socket would be inconvenient.
  7. Compare the nominal speed class last. A higher number may indicate a newer physical-link class, but it cannot overcome poor wiring or severe interference.
  8. Confirm the exact model instructions. Pairing controls, encryption settings and compatibility can vary between models in the same product family.

Install and pair the adapters

Follow the model’s manual, but this sequence reflects TP-Link’s current setup guidance and the common installation pattern.

  1. Place both adapters close together initially. Plug each directly into a wall outlet, not into a power strip, surge protector, UPS or extension cord.
  2. Connect the router-side unit. Use an Ethernet cable from a router LAN port to the adapter.
  3. Allow automatic pairing to complete. TP-Link says automatic pairing may take two to three minutes. Wait for the indicators specified by your model.
  4. Use manual pairing if necessary. Press the pair buttons in the order and for the duration given in the product instructions. Button names and timing differ by model.
  5. Move one adapter to the destination outlet. Keep the router-side adapter in its direct wall outlet and place the second unit near the endpoint device.
  6. Connect the endpoint. Run Ethernet from the remote adapter to the television, console, desktop or switch. If it is a Wi-Fi model, configure its wireless settings according to the manual.
  7. Check the link and test the intended use. Confirm that the powerline indicator remains connected, then test file transfers or the applications you actually care about at that location.

Why direct wall outlets matter

Power strips, surge protectors, UPS devices and extension cords can filter the high-frequency signals powerline adapters use. NETGEAR states that it does not recommend those accessories with Powerline products because they can reduce the data rate or block communication.

  • 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Adapters must be on the same electrical circuit for connectivity. Requires direct outlet plug in. Does not work with surge protectors. Speeds may be lower due to wiring quality, adapter distance, and network interference and conditions.

Plug both units directly into wall outlets whenever possible. If the connection is weak, move the adapter to another wall outlet before changing settings or replacing hardware. A passthrough adapter still needs to be plugged directly into the wall; connect other equipment to its filtered or unfiltered passthrough socket only as the manufacturer allows.

Troubleshoot a weak or missing link

The adapters do not detect each other

  • Verify that both units are powered and connected directly to wall outlets.
  • Bring them into the same room and repeat the pairing process.
  • Check that both adapters use the same standard and are approved for use together.
  • Try a different outlet on the same circuit.
  • Consider whether the outlets are separated by electrical phases or circuits that do not communicate effectively.

The link works but is slow

  • Remove a power strip, surge protector, UPS or extension cord from the adapter’s connection.
  • Move the adapter away from outlets serving appliances that may generate electrical noise.
  • Test another outlet in the destination room.
  • Check the Ethernet cable and the port speed shown by the connected device.
  • Compare the result with the internet service and router LAN capability; the slowest segment sets the practical ceiling.

NETGEAR identifies appliances, distance, wiring age and operational overhead as factors that affect observed data rates. A high nominal rating cannot diagnose or eliminate those local conditions.

The connection drops intermittently

  • Return both units to direct wall outlets and repeat the test.
  • Look for appliances that switch on or off near the electrical path, then test with them disconnected where safe.
  • Update or reset the adapters only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Re-pair the units and set a new powerline network key if the model supports it.
  • If changing outlets does not help, the building’s wiring or circuit arrangement may be unsuitable for powerline.

Secure the powerline network

Pair only the adapters you intend to use and follow the product’s instructions for setting its powerline network key. NETGEAR’s Powerline Utility documentation describes configuring an encryption key and gives a default key for the specific models covered by that software article. That default must not be generalized to every brand or product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After pairing, review the utility or management page for the connected units and change any default credential or network key the manual tells you to change. Keep the key private, particularly in multi-unit buildings where electrical wiring may extend beyond your household.

Example of how to read a product listing

TP-Link’s 2024 catalog lists the TL-PA7017 KIT as a two-adapter HomePlug AV2 1000 Mbps gigabit starter kit with one gigabit Ethernet port on each adapter. That description tells you the standard, nominal class, kit size and port capability. It does not establish the speed you will receive in a particular home, and current regional stock or hardware revisions should be confirmed before purchase.

Use any product listing in the same way: verify the standard first, then ports, Wi-Fi, passthrough and installation requirements. Do not infer that a G.hn model can extend an AV2 network, and do not treat the catalog distance or speed as a household guarantee.

Final checklist before ordering

  • At least two compatible adapters are included or available.
  • The proposed kit matches your existing HomePlug AV/AV2 or G.hn standard.
  • The router-side adapter can connect to an available LAN port.
  • The remote adapter has enough Ethernet ports and the correct port speed.
  • Wi-Fi is included only if the destination actually needs it.
  • Passthrough is selected if preserving the occupied outlet matters.
  • You can use direct wall outlets and test another outlet if necessary.
  • You understand that wiring, noise, distance and overhead determine the delivered rate.
  • The model’s pairing and security instructions are available for reference.
