A POV action cam is an action camera mounted to show a first-person point of view: what the camera wearer or the equipment carrying it sees. “POV” means “point of view.” It describes how the camera is used, not a separate camera technology or a special type of camera.
What does POV mean on an action camera?
POV stands for “point of view.” In action-camera footage, it means the camera is positioned to represent a person’s or mount’s perspective. A camera attached to a helmet, for example, can show the scene from roughly the wearer’s viewpoint. GoPro describes a camera mounted on a person so they can record without holding it as a wearable camera in its wearable-camera guide.

How does the mounting position change the POV?
The camera’s position determines which perspective appears in the video. The same camera can produce different POV footage when moved to another mount.

- Helmet or head: The camera generally follows the wearer’s head turns, giving a view closer to where they are looking. GoPro discusses helmet placement and fit in its helmet-camera guide.
- Chest: The camera sits lower and shows a torso-level view. It may include the wearer’s arms or equipment in the frame.
- Equipment: A handlebar, seatpost, pole, or similar mount follows the equipment rather than every movement of the wearer’s head or body. GoPro’s handlebar, seatpost, and pole mount is one example of this kind of setup.
What should you consider when choosing a POV setup?
Start with the viewpoint you want, then check whether the mount suits the activity and is compatible with the camera. After that, consider how movement, weather, and framing may affect the recording.
- Mount position and fit: Decide whether you want a head-level, chest-level, or equipment-mounted perspective. Check that the mount fits both the camera and the place you intend to attach it.
- Stabilization: Movement can make action footage shaky. DJI identifies stabilization as an important action-camera consideration in its action-camera explainer; that is manufacturer guidance, not a comparative test of cameras.
- Durability and water resistance: Match the camera and mounting setup to the activity’s conditions, and verify the relevant specifications for the exact camera and mount.
- Framing and handling: Think about what the camera will include in the frame and whether the setup leaves your hands free as intended.
Is a POV action cam different from a regular action camera?
Usually, no. “POV action cam” describes an action camera being used to capture a first-person perspective. A compact, mountable camera can serve that purpose when paired with a suitable mount; the term alone does not identify a particular model or guarantee specific features.

Is a POV action camera safe to use on a helmet?
Helmet mounting needs care. GoPro says safety is the top priority when using its camera as a helmet camera and advises mounting it properly in its helmet-camera guidance. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent helmet-safety standard. Follow the helmet maker’s instructions and the rules for your activity, and do not assume that any adhesive, strap, or mount is suitable for every helmet.
