How to choose a portrait lens for an OM System OM Pen camera

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most OM SYSTEM PEN owners, start with the M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8. It is the more portable and flexible portrait prime of the two lenses covered here, while still offering a bright f/1.8 aperture. Choose the M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm F1.8 when you have more room to stand back and specifically want tighter framing, such as in a studio.

That recommendation comes from OM SYSTEM’s published specifications and lens positioning, not from a controlled side-by-side image-quality test. Your PEN body, shooting distance, available space and willingness to carry a heavier lens should determine the final choice.

What the PEN system supports

OM SYSTEM PEN cameras use the Micro Four Thirds lens system. OM SYSTEM states that PEN bodies work with its M.Zuiko lens range and compatible Micro Four Thirds lenses. Because the title does not identify a specific PEN model, treat compatibility as a system-level starting point rather than a guarantee that every camera feature behaves identically on every body.

Before ordering, check the manual or support page for your exact camera. This is especially important for an older PEN body or when a particular autofocus, stabilization, electronic-control or firmware function matters to your work. The lens mount standard may be shared, while feature support can still vary by body and firmware.

The two portrait primes at a glance

Lens 35mm-equivalent field of view Maximum aperture Closest focus Weight Best fit
M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8 90mm f/1.8 0.5m 116g Portable, flexible portraits and locations with limited working room; the space advantage is an inference from the specifications.
M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm F1.8 150mm f/1.8 0.84m 305g Tighter framing when you can work farther away; OM SYSTEM positions it for studio portraits.

Both lenses have the same maximum aperture, so the key choice is not which one is brighter. The practical divide is angle of view, working distance, minimum focusing distance and carrying weight. The 45mm lists a 27-degree angle of view and a seven-blade circular diaphragm; the 75mm lists 16 degrees and a nine-blade circular diaphragm. Those are design specifications that can inform composition and out-of-focus highlight shape, but they do not establish a tested bokeh or image-quality winner.

How focal length changes a portrait session

Working distance and communication

A 90mm-equivalent view generally lets you make a head-and-shoulders or half-length portrait without moving as far back as you would with a 150mm-equivalent view. That matters in a small room, a narrow street or a busy event where walls, furniture and people limit your position. The shorter lens also gives you more freedom to change from a tighter portrait to a wider environmental frame without continually backing away.

The longer lens narrows the view substantially. You need more distance for the same framing, so measure the room or location before choosing it. In a studio with a clear shooting lane, that distance can be easy to provide; in a living room or at a dinner table, it may make the lens impractical. The distance trade-off here is an inference from the published focal-length equivalents and minimum focus distances, not a laboratory measurement.

Framing and background inclusion

The 45mm-equivalent view includes more of the surroundings at a given camera position. Use it when the place, clothing or activity is part of the portrait. The 75mm’s narrower view excludes more of the edges, which can simplify a distracting background and make a face or upper body fill the frame from farther away.

Neither field of view is automatically “better.” Decide whether the portrait should explain where the person is or isolate the person from the setting. If you cannot predict the location, the wider of these two options gives you more room to reframe by moving and by cropping within a composition.

Minimum focusing distance

The 45mm focuses as close as 0.5m, while the 75mm’s closest stated distance is 0.84m. A shorter minimum distance gives you more flexibility for close details, such as a face crop, hands, jewelry or a small product held by the subject. The 75mm’s longer minimum distance reinforces its need for a clear shooting lane.

Minimum focus is not the same as a promise of a particular magnification or image quality at that distance. If close-up rendering is central to your assignment, verify the camera-and-lens manual and inspect the manufacturer’s detailed specifications before purchase.

What the f/1.8 aperture does—and does not—decide

Both lenses open to f/1.8. That gives each the same stated maximum aperture, so aperture alone does not separate them in this comparison. A wide aperture can help you work in dim interiors and can reduce depth of field when you focus carefully, but the visible result also depends on subject distance, background distance, sensor framing and focus accuracy.

OM SYSTEM describes the 45mm as suitable for low-light interiors, action and defocused-background portrait effects. That is manufacturer marketing language, not an independent test. OM SYSTEM describes the 75mm as a high-grade, fast-aperture portrait lens with metallic construction and a light weight of 10.7 ounces; the published specification table here lists its weight as 305g. Neither description proves that one lens resolves more detail, renders skin differently or produces superior blur.

Choose by shooting situation

Small rooms and home portraits

Start with the 45mm. Its shorter equivalent focal length and nearer focusing limit are easier to use when you cannot put many metres between camera and subject. Leave enough space around the person for the composition you want, then move closer or farther rather than relying on a narrow room to accommodate the longer lens.

Studio portraits with a defined shooting lane

The 75mm becomes a logical candidate when the studio gives you the distance it requires. OM SYSTEM specifically positions this lens for studio portraits, and its narrow view can help you fill the frame while keeping the camera farther from the subject. Confirm that your lighting, backdrop and camera position leave a clear path at the distance required by your intended framing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel and walk-around portrait work

The 45mm weighs 116g compared with 305g for the 75mm. That difference is substantial in a small kit, especially when you are already carrying a PEN body, spare batteries and other lenses. If you expect to walk all day or move between locations, the lighter prime is the lower-burden option documented by the specifications.

Stage, outdoor and distance portraits

The 75mm can suit situations in which you must stay back, such as a performance area or a portrait made across a courtyard. Its usefulness depends on having sufficient light and a position from which you can achieve the framing you want. Do not select it solely because a longer focal length sounds more professional; verify the available distance first.

Environmental portraits and family groups

The 45mm is the safer starting point when the surroundings are part of the story or when several people may enter the frame. The 75mm’s 16-degree angle of view is more restrictive, so a group or a room may require a much longer camera-to-subject distance than you have available.

A step-by-step selection method

  1. Identify your usual portrait type. Write down whether you make headshots, half-length portraits, full-length portraits, environmental scenes, studio work or distant candid images. A lens that suits one category may be awkward for another.
  2. Measure the real shooting space. Stand where the camera will be and measure to the nearest position your subject can occupy. Repeat this in the room, studio or location where you work most often. If the distance is uncertain, favour the lens that leaves more framing flexibility.
  3. Choose the framing priority. Select the 45mm when you need context or rapid reframing. Select the 75mm when excluding the edges and filling the frame from farther away are more important.
  4. Set a carrying limit. Compare the listed 116g and 305g weights with the rest of your kit. Decide whether the longer lens will stay at home because of its additional mass; a lens that is not carried cannot make the portrait.
  5. Check close-subject needs. If you regularly move close for details, the 0.5m closest-focus specification of the 45mm gives you more stated room than the 0.84m limit of the 75mm. Confirm the exact magnification in the official documentation if that detail matters.
  6. Verify your PEN body. Look up your exact model’s compatibility notes and current firmware guidance. Confirm that the functions you care about—such as the camera’s focus modes or electronic controls—are supported with the chosen lens.
  7. Buy from a listing that identifies the exact model. Search for “OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8 lens” or “OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm F1.8 lens.” Check the current product name, stock, condition, regional warranty and return terms. Prices and inventory were not established here and can change.

How to test your choice before committing

If you can borrow or rent a lens, recreate your normal portrait rather than photographing a generic test chart. Put the camera at the distance you measured, frame the subject at the intended crop and make several images while the subject turns or moves naturally. This reveals whether you can maintain communication, avoid backing into a wall and keep the desired background in the frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeat the exercise at the closest distance you expect to use. Check whether you can focus where you intend and whether the composition still works when the subject leans forward. For the 75mm, deliberately test the farthest location you can access; for the 45mm, test how much context remains at your normal position.

Use the same PEN body, focus settings, aperture and light when comparing files. Keep conclusions limited to your own handling and workflow. The cited manufacturer pages are not an independent side-by-side image-quality test, so they cannot support a claim that one lens is sharper, has better autofocus or produces more attractive blur.

Composition and handling practices

Place the subject before changing lenses

Choose the camera position and the subject’s relationship to the background first. Then select the focal length that gives the required crop from that position. This prevents a common mistake: choosing a lens by reputation and discovering that the room cannot provide the necessary distance.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Keep the focus target intentional

At a wide aperture, decide which eye or facial feature should be the focus target before you press the shutter. Recheck focus when the subject moves toward or away from the camera. The lenses’ identical f/1.8 maximum does not remove the need for careful focus technique.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch the edges of the frame

With the 45mm, inspect the surroundings for bright objects, signs or people that compete with the subject. With the 75mm, inspect for accidental cropping of hair, shoulders or hands because the narrow view can make small camera movements significant. These are composition checks, not claims about optical performance.

Balance the kit

The lighter 45mm is less demanding for a compact PEN setup. The 75mm adds 189g over the 45mm, so consider the grip, strap and support you will use for a long session. Weight is a published lens specification; comfort depends on the complete camera configuration and your own carrying habits.

What the published specifications cannot tell you

The available product information establishes focal-length equivalents, aperture, closest-focus distance, weight, angle of view and diaphragm-blade count. It does not establish a controlled ranking for sharpness, contrast, chromatic aberration, flare resistance, autofocus speed, stabilization behavior, weather sealing, skin-tone rendering or bokeh quality.

Those omissions matter because a portrait lens is used interactively. A lens may fit a room perfectly yet be unsuitable for a particular camera feature, lighting setup or handling preference. Use the specifications to narrow the choice, then consult the exact PEN manual and, where possible, make your own controlled trial.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Buying the longer lens without measuring distance

Symptom: You cannot step back far enough to fit the desired crop. Fix: Measure the shooting lane first; choose the 45mm if the space is constrained.

Assuming the same aperture means the same perspective

Symptom: You expect both lenses to show the same amount of background at the same camera position. Fix: Decide the camera-to-subject distance and framing together. The different equivalent fields of view produce different compositions.

Treating marketing copy as a test result

Symptom: You expect guaranteed blur, sharpness or action performance from descriptive language. Fix: Treat OM SYSTEM’s statements as product positioning and verify performance with independent evidence or your own trial.

Ignoring the body-specific manual

Symptom: The lens mounts but a desired camera feature behaves differently than expected. Fix: Check compatibility notes, firmware guidance and operating instructions for your exact PEN model before buying.

Choosing by weight alone

Symptom: The lighter lens is easy to carry but does not provide the framing you need, or the heavier lens stays unused. Fix: Apply the complete sequence: subject type, available distance, framing, close-focus need, then weight.

Which lens should you buy?

Choose the M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8 if you want one broadly useful portrait prime for a PEN, often work indoors or in changing locations, need a lighter kit, or want more flexibility when moving close. Its published specifications make it the balanced starting choice for those conditions.

Choose the M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm F1.8 if you routinely have room to stand back, prefer a tighter 150mm-equivalent view, and are comfortable carrying the additional weight. Its intended studio-portrait positioning aligns with that spacious setup.

If your decision depends on autofocus behavior, stabilization, weather resistance, a particular PEN generation or measured image quality, stop at the specification comparison and consult the exact camera documentation or a credible independent test. Those details are not established by the manufacturer specifications summarized here.
