Choose a portable sump pump by the water it must handle and the flow it can deliver at your actual lift and discharge setup—not by its headline gallons-per-hour rating alone. Before buying, measure the vertical rise and pipe route, check that the pump fits the sump, and plan how it will get power and where it will send water.
What size sump pump do you need?
There is no universal gallons-per-hour (GPH) target for an unspecified home. The right capacity depends on how quickly water enters the sump and how much flow the pump can provide against the installation’s lift and pipe resistance. FEMA identifies pump capacity, head (the vertical lift), and electrical power as selection factors in its residential retrofit guidance; its floodproofing guidance also discusses piping friction and switch type.

First distinguish routine seepage management from a temporary water-removal job. A portable pump may suit a temporary task, but it should be rated for the intended use and installation. If you do not know the likely inflow or cannot assess the site, do not treat a product’s maximum rating as a sizing recommendation; ask a plumbing or drainage professional to assess the system.

Measure the installation before comparing pumps
A pump’s maximum flow is generally not the flow it will deliver at every lift. Compare the manufacturer’s flow data at the vertical rise the water must travel, then account for resistance from pipe length, diameter, bends, fittings, and the discharge outlet. The Flotec FPCC5030 specifications, for example, list different flow figures at maximum lift and at a 10-foot lift.

Compare delivered flow, not headline GPH
Use the pump’s flow-at-lift chart or table. Find the row or curve closest to your measured lift and compare candidates at that point. If a manufacturer does not publish enough performance data for your setup, contact the manufacturer or choose a model with clearly documented operating specifications rather than assuming its maximum GPH will hold.
For a model-specific illustration, Pentair lists the Flotec FPCC5030 at a maximum of 4,200 GPH for its primary pump and 2,700 GPH for its backup; at a 10-foot lift, the listed figures are 3,000 GPH and 1,260 GPH, respectively. These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not general sizing targets. Its listed maximum lift is 22 feet for the primary pump and 15 feet for the backup; maximum lift does not mean the pump will deliver its maximum GPH at that height.

Check pump type, placement, and physical fit
Portable sump pumps commonly use a submersible or pedestal arrangement. FEMA’s residential guidance prefers submersible pumps in its discussed applications because they can continue to operate if floodwater rises above the pump. That general guidance does not establish that every portable submersible model is appropriate for every sump or flood scenario.
Use the exact model’s manual to confirm pit dimensions, pump dimensions, discharge connection, and float-switch clearance. For example, the Flotec FPCC5030 specifications call for a minimum 14-inch sump diameter and 18-inch sump depth, with a 1½-inch discharge connection. Those are requirements for that model only, not standard sump dimensions.

Prior to operation, gently submerge the pump into the water at an inclined angle to facilitate the release of any trapped air bubbles
Switch designs also differ. FEMA’s floodproofing guidance discusses diaphragm, vertical-action float, tethered-float, and electronic free-float switches. Check the chosen pump’s operating instructions and understand how its switch works in your sump; the available guidance does not establish one switch style as best for every installation.
Plan for power outages and pump failure
A primary pump is only useful while it has power and can operate. The National Flood Insurance Program’s FloodSmart guidance recommends a working sump pump and water alarm, plus a battery-operated backup pump in case power goes out. The Government of Canada also recommends an alternate power source and a backup pump, and advises periodically testing the backup system in its sump-pump guidance.

- Flexible Use Without Extension Cords: 25ft power cord allows easy use in basements, yards, and outdoor areas without extra cables, while the durable PP construction supports stable and reliable operation.
- Check whether the backup is a separate pump or an integrated system, and what triggers it.
- Confirm battery type and compatibility with the exact backup system. For the Flotec FPCC5030, Pentair specifies compatible flooded or sealed AGM deep-cycle batteries; do not assume other battery types are supported.
- Compare backup flow at your required lift, not just its maximum-flow figure.
- Follow the manufacturer’s battery care and test instructions. Do not infer runtime or outage protection from a battery’s name or capacity alone.
- Consider a water alarm so you can be alerted if the water rises or the pump fails.
Route discharge water away from the foundation
Make sure the discharge has a suitable destination and does not simply return water to the foundation or create a drainage problem elsewhere. The Government of Canada advises directing the discharge at least 1.5 m (5 ft.) from the foundation if possible, toward an area with good drainage. A discharge hose can extend a short pipe, but confirm it fits the outlet and route it so water can flow safely. Check local rules and site-specific drainage constraints before installation.

A pump recommendation for an unknown home cannot be reduced to a single GPH number. If the inflow, lift, pipe setup, sump, or discharge destination is uncertain, a licensed plumbing professional can assess whether a sump pump is appropriate and install it. The Government of Canada notes that a licensed electrician may be needed for a dedicated circuit. Follow local electrical and plumbing requirements as well as the pump’s instructions.
