Choose a portable power station by matching two separate requirements: the energy you need in watt-hours (Wh) and the power your devices draw in watts (W). Make a load list, account for motor-start surges, confirm how you will recharge the battery, then check weight, ports, safety features and transport rules. A large battery is not automatically suitable if its inverter cannot start an appliance, and a powerful inverter is not useful if the battery runs out too soon.

Road and RV trips are realistic uses for many power stations. Passenger-aircraft travel is different: the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says lithium battery-powered generators above 160 Wh are forbidden on passenger aircraft, so most full-size stations cannot be carried on a flight.

Start with the load you actually need to run

Do not begin with a product’s advertised capacity. Begin with the devices that must operate, for how long, and whether they will run together. The result is a small worksheet that lets you compare any model on equal terms.

Record running wattage and hours

For each device, write down its running wattage from the label, manual or manufacturer specification. Then record the number of hours it must operate during the outage, trip or activity. For a continuous load, estimate energy with:

Energy (Wh) = power (W) × operating time (hours)

For rechargeable electronics, use the device’s stated watt-hour rating when one is available. If only volts and amp-hours are given, the FAA explains that watt-hours can be calculated as volts multiplied by amp-hours: Wh = V × Ah.

Device or load Running power (W) Required time (h) Estimated energy (Wh) Runs simultaneously?
Example: communications device Use its label Enter your requirement W × h Yes or no
Example: refrigerator or pump Use running and starting data Enter your requirement Running W × h Usually with other loads
Example: laptop Use charger rating or device data Enter your requirement W × h or stated Wh Often yes

Add the energy figures for loads that must run over the same period. Then allow a practical margin for inverter losses, charging losses, temperature and the fact that manufacturers’ usable-capacity figures may be measured under stated conditions. Do not treat the printed Wh number as guaranteed AC runtime.

Separate continuous loads from occasional loads

A device that cycles, such as a compressor, may have a modest average consumption but a high startup demand. Note both its normal running wattage and its starting or surge requirement. If a specification does not state the startup demand, ask the appliance manufacturer or measure it with suitable equipment rather than assuming the station will cope.

Match stored energy and output separately

Capacity in watt-hours determines runtime

Wh describes how much energy the battery stores. A station with more Wh can support a given load for longer, subject to conversion losses and operating conditions. Capacity does not tell you whether the inverter can power a particular appliance.

Continuous output in watts determines what can run now

Continuous AC output is the load the inverter can sustain at one time. Compare it with the sum of devices that may operate simultaneously, not just with the largest single device. Check the station’s output rating for the voltage and socket configuration you will use; regional mains assumptions matter.

Surge output handles starting motors and compressors

Refrigerators, freezers, pumps, fans and some power tools can draw a brief surge when starting. Check both the duration and magnitude of the station’s surge rating, and compare them with the appliance’s startup specification. A station can have ample Wh yet fail to start a motor if its inverter’s surge capability is too low.

Choose a recharge plan before choosing a battery size

A station is useful only if you can restore its energy when needed. Compare every charging path you expect to use and the conditions in which it will be available.

AC mains charging

Check the manufacturer’s stated AC recharge time, the input power and the voltage or plug version for your region. A fast AC charger can shorten an outage recovery window, but it may require a suitable circuit and may not be available at a campsite or during a prolonged blackout.

Vehicle charging

For road trips and RV use, verify the exact vehicle-input voltage, connector, maximum input current and charging behavior. A 12-volt accessory socket, an RV connection and a dedicated alternator or DC charging system are not interchangeable. Confirm that the vehicle or RV circuit can supply the station’s requested input without exceeding its fuse or wiring limits.

Solar charging

Solar input is model-specific. Before buying a panel, confirm the station’s maximum solar wattage, allowed voltage range, connector type and whether the panel’s electrical characteristics fall inside those limits. A panel that physically plugs in may still be electrically incompatible. Solar recharge time changes with sunlight angle, weather, shading, temperature and the station’s input limit; do not promise a fixed time without a defined scenario.

Plan for charging during an outage

For home backup, decide whether the station can be recharged from mains between interruptions, from solar during daylight, or from a vehicle. If none is dependable, size the battery for the entire period you need rather than assuming a later recharge will be available.

Priorities by use case

Use Prioritize Important caveat
Home backup Essential-load list, runtime, continuous and surge output, recharge speed, and UPS or expansion behavior when required A portable station does not automatically power an entire house or connect safely to house wiring. Use appropriate transfer equipment and qualified installation.
Camping Energy for the actual devices, manageable carrying weight, direct USB/DC ports, quiet operation, and solar or vehicle charging More capacity generally means more weight and cost. Match it to the trip length rather than buying the largest unit.
Road or RV travel Vehicle-input compatibility, capacity, weight, outlet types and RV-specific connections Verify voltage, connector, input limits and the electrical constraints of the exact vehicle and station.
Air travel Exact battery Wh rating and current airline approval rules Many full-size stations exceed passenger-aircraft limits. Never assume a carrier will accept one in checked baggage.

Use published ranges only as starting points

Anker SOLIX’s 2026 buying guidance gives broad starting ranges, not a universal sizing standard. Its recommendations are useful for framing a shortlist, but your load worksheet, startup surge, losses and recharge opportunities remain decisive.

Scenario Anker SOLIX illustrative capacity range Anker SOLIX illustrative output range How to interpret it
Phone and laptop charging Under 600 Wh 300–600 W Suitable only when your actual devices fit those energy and output limits.
Weekend camping 600–1,500 Wh 600–1,200 W A starting point for several days of personal electronics and small loads, not a guarantee for heating or cooking appliances.
Short home power cut 1,000–2,000 Wh 1,000–1,800 W Build the list around essential circuits and check motor-start surges.
Multi-day backup with appliances 2,000 Wh or more 2,000 W or more Large appliances may still exceed the inverter or surge rating; expansion and recharge planning become important.

Read the full manufacturer explanation at Anker SOLIX’s “What to Look for in a Portable Power Station Explained” and its portable power station buying guide. These pages are UK-focused, so socket and voltage details may not match your country.

Check ports, simultaneous use and electrical behavior

Count the connections you will use at once

List the AC outlets, USB-A or USB-C ports, 12-volt DC sockets and any other outputs required simultaneously. Check the rating of each port, not merely the station’s headline output. Some models reduce available power when several output groups operate together; read the simultaneous-use limit.

Confirm voltage and socket format

Choose the version intended for your region and verify AC voltage, frequency and socket type. An adapter can change a plug shape but cannot make an incompatible voltage or frequency safe for an appliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether UPS behavior matters

If the station will support a router, computer, medical device or other outage-sensitive equipment, check its UPS mode and switchover time. “UPS” is not a guarantee that every device will remain powered; compare the stated transfer behavior with the equipment’s tolerance and follow the station manufacturer’s instructions.

Review weather resistance and operating limits

Camping and vehicle users should look for the stated weather or splash resistance, operating temperature, storage temperature and ventilation requirements. Do not infer outdoor suitability from a rugged case alone. Keep vents clear, protect the unit from water unless its rating explicitly allows exposure, and follow the manual for charging and storage.

Home-backup setup: support essentials, not the whole house by default

Start by deciding which loads matter during an outage: communications, networking, lighting, refrigeration, medical equipment or selected work devices. Calculate their combined Wh requirement and simultaneous W demand, including surge. Then determine how the station will connect.

Use outlets safely

The simplest arrangement is to plug individual appliances directly into the station. Do not energize a home circuit by plugging the station into a wall outlet. Backfeeding can expose utility workers and damage equipment. Whole-circuit backup requires correctly rated transfer equipment and installation that complies with local electrical rules.

Keep combustion and battery systems distinct

A battery station produces no combustion exhaust while operating. Fuel generators burn fuel and must be used outdoors, away from doors, windows and other openings. A battery station still needs ventilation, dry storage and protection from physical damage according to its manual.

Consider expansion only when the use case needs it

Some systems support extra batteries or multiple units; others do not. Expansion adds capacity and often weight, cost and complexity. Confirm that expansion works in the operating mode you need and that the manufacturer states how capacity and output behave when modules are added.

Camping and off-grid use: weight is part of capacity

For a campsite, list lights, phones, cameras, laptops, refrigeration, medical equipment and cooking or heating devices separately. USB and DC outputs can avoid inverter conversion for compatible electronics, improving practicality even when the headline Wh is unchanged.

Choose a carrying limit

Compare the station’s mass and dimensions with the distance from vehicle to campsite, stairs, storage space and the number of people who will move it. A larger battery that stays in the vehicle may be sensible; the same unit can be impractical for a remote tent site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Balance quiet operation and recharge access

Noise matters at a campsite and in a sleeping area. Check the manufacturer’s operating-noise information if provided, and confirm whether fast charging, vehicle charging or solar charging is available where you will camp. Solar panels need unobstructed exposure and cannot be treated as an always-on fuel source.

Road and RV travel: verify the vehicle system

Road travel removes the airline Wh restriction but introduces vehicle and storage constraints. Check that the station fits securely, remains within the vehicle’s payload limits and can be charged without overloading an accessory circuit. RV owners should verify the exact shore-power, DC and appliance connections; a station’s AC outlet is not automatically an RV inlet or a substitute for an installed electrical system.

Plan for parked operation: determine whether the vehicle can recharge the station while driving, whether the input is limited by the vehicle socket, and how the station behaves when the engine is off. Secure cables so they cannot chafe, become trip hazards or disconnect while moving.

Battery rating FAA passenger guidance summarized in the cited page Practical implication
Up to 100 Wh Rechargeable batteries up to this rating are generally allowed for personal use on passenger aircraft. Carry the exact rating and follow the airline’s packing and protection rules.
101–160 Wh Airline approval is required; the cited US guidance allows up to two spare batteries per person. Obtain approval before arriving at the airport and verify whether the airline adds conditions.
Above 160 Wh Lithium battery-powered generators in this category are forbidden on passenger aircraft. Most full-size portable power stations fall here; do not check one as baggage or assume cabin acceptance.

The FAA battery guidance is available at Airline Passengers and Batteries. Keep the manufacturer’s Wh marking visible. If the label gives only volts and amp-hours, calculate Wh as V × Ah, but ask the carrier whether it accepts that documentation.

Worked sizing examples

These examples show the method with hypothetical label values. Replace every assumed wattage and time with your own device data, then add a margin for losses and operating conditions.

Example: communications kit for an evening

Assume a router rated at 20 W for 6 hours and a laptop charger rated at 65 W for 4 hours. The estimated energy is 20 × 6 = 120 Wh plus 65 × 4 = 260 Wh, or 380 Wh before losses. The simultaneous load is 85 W, so a station must provide at least that continuous output, with the appropriate regional AC or DC connections. If the laptop’s charger is intermittent, use measured or manufacturer data rather than assuming its maximum rating is constant.

Example: refrigerator plus electronics

Suppose the refrigerator’s documentation states a 150 W running draw and a separate startup requirement, while communications devices total 60 W. Energy depends on the refrigerator’s duty cycle and the number of hours required; do not multiply 150 W by every hour unless the documentation says it runs continuously. The station must handle the refrigerator’s startup surge and at least 210 W of simultaneous running load, plus any other device that may overlap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: weekend camping

List each device for the actual trip: phones, camera batteries, a laptop, lights and any cooler or medical equipment. Sum their Wh requirements over the planned hours, identify which items charge at the same time, and compare the result with a station’s usable capacity, USB/DC ratings and recharge options. If the station will be carried far from the car, treat weight as a hard limit rather than an afterthought.

How to compare two models without being misled by headline numbers

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Usable or stated capacity What Wh figure is published, under what conditions, and is usable energy specified separately?
Continuous and surge output What can run at once, and for how long can the surge rating support motor startup?
Ports Which AC, USB and DC outputs are included, what does each port supply, and are there simultaneous-use limits?
Charging What are the AC, vehicle and solar input limits, connectors, voltage ranges and recharge times?
Size and weight Can you lift, carry, secure and store it where it will be used?
Battery chemistry and cycle life What chemistry is used, and under what test conditions is the stated cycle life measured?
UPS behavior What is the switchover time, and is it suitable for your sensitive equipment?
Weather and storage What resistance, temperature limits and storage procedure does the manufacturer state?
Warranty and regional availability Does the warranty apply in your country, and is the exact voltage or socket version available?
Price Compare the delivered price for the exact regional model and included accessories; promotional pricing can change.

Illustrative product specification

TechRadar’s 2026 guide reports the Jackery Explorer 1000 V2 at 1,070 Wh, 1,500 W output and 10 kg, with AC, USB and car outputs plus solar input. TechRadar presents it as a camping option but notes that its weight matters and that 1,500 W will not run every household appliance. Treat those figures as a dated example of the trade-offs to compare, not as a recommendation or a universal sizing rule. See TechRadar’s portable power station guide for its source context; specifications and availability can change.

Common buying mistakes and how to correct them

  • Choosing by Wh alone: Check continuous and surge watts against every simultaneous load.
  • Ignoring startup demand: Obtain compressor, pump or motor surge data before purchase.
  • Assuming advertised Wh equals runtime: Account for conversion losses, cutoff behavior, temperature and the actual duty cycle.
  • Buying a solar panel first: Match panel voltage, connector and maximum wattage to the station’s solar-input specification.
  • Overlooking simultaneous-use limits: Add the outputs you will use at once and read port-group restrictions.
  • Using a station to backfeed a house: Use direct appliance connections or a properly installed transfer system; never energize a wall outlet from the station.
  • Carrying a full-size unit to the airport: Check the exact Wh rating and current airline policy; units above 160 Wh are forbidden on passenger aircraft under the cited FAA guidance.
  • Ignoring regional electrical details: Confirm voltage, frequency, socket type and warranty coverage for your country.
  • Buying more capacity than you can move: Set a carrying and storage limit before comparing models.

A practical buying checklist

  1. List every required device, its running W, required hours and any startup surge.
  2. Calculate Wh for each load and total the energy for the period you need.
  3. Identify which loads operate simultaneously and calculate their combined continuous W.
  4. Choose a station whose capacity, continuous output and surge output exceed those requirements with a practical margin.
  5. Confirm AC voltage, frequency, socket type and every required AC, USB and DC port.
  6. Choose at least one dependable recharge path and verify its input limits, connector and recharge time.
  7. Check weight, dimensions, carrying points, operating noise, weather resistance and storage limits.
  8. Review UPS behavior, battery chemistry, cycle-life test conditions, warranty and regional support if those factors matter to your use.
  9. For home backup, plan a safe connection method and select only the circuits or appliances you intend to support.
  10. For travel, verify vehicle or RV compatibility; for flights, check the exact Wh rating and the current carrier rules before departure.

The right station is the smallest, lightest and easiest-to-recharge model that safely meets both your energy and output requirements. As Anker SOLIX puts it, “The right choice should run your essential devices for long enough without becoming unnecessarily heavy, expensive or difficult to recharge.”
