Choose a portable power station by adding up the energy your priority devices need during the outage, then compare that total with the station’s usable watt-hours. Separately check that its continuous and surge output can run each device. A large capacity number alone does not guarantee that a station can start or operate a particular appliance.
How many watt-hours do you need for a power outage?
Estimate each device’s energy use over the hours you expect to run it, then add the estimates for the devices you plan to use during the same period:

Energy (Wh) = average power draw (W) × operating time (hours)

For an initial estimate, use the device’s stated operating draw or a measured draw when available. A nameplate’s maximum rating may not match typical use, while a guessed figure can make the total unreliable. If a device cycles on and off, use its average draw over the time it will be powered rather than assuming it runs continuously at its peak.

| Illustrative load | Assumed average draw | Planned use | Estimated energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone charging | 10 W | 2 hours | 20 Wh |
| LED light | 5 W | 5 hours | 25 Wh |
| Small radio | 3 W | 8 hours | 24 Wh |
| Example total | 69 Wh |
These figures are hypothetical arithmetic examples, not measurements or recommendations for particular products. Replace them with the specifications or measured draws for your own devices. Add the energy for every planned use over the outage period, including repeated charging or operation on multiple days.
Compare your estimate with the station’s usable energy specification, not just a headline capacity number. A station’s stored energy is not necessarily all available to power connected devices. The sources cited here do not establish a universal usable-energy percentage, so do not apply a generic percentage to every model; consult its manufacturer’s specifications and manual.

What should you plan to power?
Start with the consequences of losing power, not with a capacity tier. A plan focused on staying in touch and having light can be very different from one that includes a critical medical device or an appliance. The Government of Canada recommends tailoring outage preparations to household needs, including medical equipment, refrigerated medicines, and devices that depend on the internet. Discuss medical contingencies with a doctor when a health condition or essential equipment could be affected. Government of Canada: Power outages – Get prepared
Canada’s emergency-kit guidance recommends being equipped for at least 3 days (72 hours), and says to tailor the kit to household needs and location and add supplies for a longer emergency if possible. Treat 72 hours as a preparedness horizon for your household, not as a promise that a portable station can power every device for that long. The checklist includes a mobile-phone charger and power bank, battery packs, and a battery- or wind-up radio. Government of Canada: Emergency kit checklist

- Medical or medication needs: Make a household plan for electrical medical devices and refrigerated medicines; do not assume a station is adequate without checking the exact equipment requirements and arranging appropriate medical advice.
Check output as well as capacity
Watt-hours describe stored energy; watts describe the rate at which a station can supply power. A station may have enough stored energy on paper but still be unable to operate a device if the device’s running draw exceeds the station’s continuous output. Some appliances also need more power briefly when starting, so compare their starting or surge requirements with the station’s surge capability.
- Read the appliance manual or nameplate for its operating and, where specified, starting requirements.
- Read the station manual and specifications for continuous output, surge capability, supported output types, and any relevant limits.
- Confirm the station can meet the device’s requirements before relying on it. Check each intended appliance rather than using a universal threshold: the sources cited here do not establish one for refrigerators, pumps, or other appliances.
A portable battery station should not be treated as whole-home backup simply because its watt-hour rating is large. High-draw appliances can exceed its output, and a station does not provide household heat merely by having more stored energy.

Account for charging and storm conditions
Grid recharge may be unavailable during an outage. A compatible solar panel can be a charging option only if the station supports that panel and its input limits are respected. Check the station’s solar-input specifications, the panel’s compatibility, and the manufacturer’s charging instructions. Solar output during a Canadian storm is not established here, so do not count on a particular amount of energy from solar without conditions and equipment-specific information to support the estimate.

Consider whether you can move the station to where priority devices will be used. Portability, charging access, and the location of the loads can affect whether a capacity that works on paper is practical in your household.

Keep food safety separate from battery runtime
A battery station’s runtime estimate does not determine how long food will remain safe during an outage. Health Canada says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours; a full freezer keeps food frozen for about 48 hours; and a half-full freezer for about 24 hours. These are food-storage intervals, not estimates of how long a station can run a refrigerator or freezer. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed and use thermometers to assess food. Health Canada: Food and drinking water safety in an emergency
Include safe alternatives in the outage plan
A portable battery is one part of preparedness, alongside emergency supplies, communications, and a household plan. Government of Canada guidance says battery- or solar-powered portable generators do not produce carbon monoxide. Fuel-burning generators have different risks: operate a portable one at least 6 m (20 feet) from homes or buildings, direct exhaust away from windows and doors, and follow its safety instructions. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet or connect backup generation to a home electrical system except through an approved transfer panel and switch installed by a qualified electrician. A final selection checklist
- List the devices that matter most to your household and the hours you expect to use them.
- Estimate their watt-hours using actual or manufacturer-stated operating draws, then total the planned energy demand.
- Compare the total with the station’s specified usable energy; do not assume a universal conversion from advertised capacity.
- Check continuous and surge output against each device’s own requirements.
- Verify charging options, compatibility, and practical placement before counting on them.
- Make separate arrangements for medical needs, refrigerated medicines, food safety, and household backup connections.
Public Safety Canada reports that “1 in 3 Canadian adults have experienced a major weather-related emergency or disaster in their lifetime.” That is national context, not a prediction of the chance or duration of an outage in any particular community. Public Safety Canada: Get prepared
