Choose a power bank by matching its stored energy to your devices and time away from outlets, then check output wattage, port and cable compatibility, weight, and the printed watt-hour (Wh) rating. For flights, keep it in carry-on baggage, verify the operating airline’s current limits, and apply the 2026 international rule allowing no more than two power banks and prohibiting recharging them onboard.
Start with the trip, not the biggest number on the box
A power bank is a spare battery. The right one depends on what you will charge, how long you will be away from a wall outlet, and how much weight you are willing to carry. Capacity and charging speed answer different questions: capacity is how much energy the bank stores; output wattage is how quickly it can deliver power to a compatible device.

Inventory every device
List the phone, tablet, headphones, camera, handheld console, hotspot, or laptop you might need to charge. Note each device’s charging connector and, where the manufacturer publishes it, its required input power. A phone-only day away from an outlet has a different requirement from a trip involving several devices or a computer.

- Identify which device is most important if the bank cannot charge everything at once.
- Check whether you will need one connector type or several.
- Decide whether the bank itself can be recharged between uses; a high-capacity bank is less useful if your itinerary offers no practical recharge opportunity.
- Include the cable in the compatibility check. A bank, cable, and device must all support the charging mode you intend to use.
Use the following priorities for common trips
| Trip pattern | What to prioritize | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Phone-only day with regular access to outlets | Moderate capacity, low weight, a connector that matches the phone, and enough output wattage for the phone | You are carrying the bank for occasional top-ups rather than extended off-grid use. |
| Long day or weekend with a phone and tablet | More stored energy, clearly labeled Wh, adequate output for the tablet, and a size you can carry comfortably | Multiple devices increase energy demand, but the bank still has to remain portable and flight-compliant. |
| Several small devices | Enough ports for the intended charging pattern, stated output for each port or simultaneous use, and cable compatibility | A large mAh figure does not tell you whether the ports can deliver the required speed. |
| Laptop plus smaller devices | Output wattage that meets the laptop’s stated input requirement, suitable cable and connector, labeled Wh, and verified airline acceptance | Laptops generally impose a higher power requirement; capacity alone cannot establish that a bank will charge one. |
These are selection priorities, not promises of a fixed number of charges. Actual results vary with the device, its battery condition, the charging mode, conversion losses, and how much power the device uses while charging.

Capacity: read mAh, but make travel decisions in Wh
What mAh tells you
Milliamp-hours (mAh) are commonly printed as a shorthand for battery capacity. A larger number generally indicates more stored charge within a product’s stated battery system, but mAh is not a charging-speed rating and cannot be compared directly with an airline’s Wh limit.
Why voltage is required
Watt-hours measure energy. The Federal Aviation Administration gives this conversion: Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × voltage. Read the voltage from the product’s specification or label before converting. The same mAh value can produce a different Wh result at a different voltage. See the FAA’s passenger guidance at Airline Passengers and Batteries.
For an arithmetic illustration only, a label stating 10,000 mAh at 3.7 V would calculate as 37 Wh: (10,000 ÷ 1,000) × 3.7. That is not a claim about every 10,000 mAh product. If the stated voltage changes, the result changes. When a bank prints a Wh value, use that value for travel decisions rather than estimating from mAh.
Capacity and output are separate specifications
| Specification | Question it answers | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity (mAh or Wh) | How much energy the bank stores | How quickly it will charge a particular device |
| Output power (watts) | How much power the bank can deliver through a port or charging mode | How long the bank will last without knowing the device and conditions |
| Port and cable specification | Whether the physical connection and charging mode can work | That every connected device will receive the advertised maximum simultaneously |
| Weight and dimensions | How portable the bank is in your actual bag or pocket | Its energy capacity or charging speed |
Check the label before buying
Choose a bank whose capacity and Wh marking are easy to read. If the Wh value is missing, obscured, or unreadable, do not assume that an airport agent or airline will accept a mAh figure without the voltage needed for a conversion. Photographing the specification label before a trip can help you retrieve the information, but it does not replace carrying a legible marking on the product.
Charging speed: compare watts, ports, and the complete cable path
Start with output wattage
Inspect the stated output in watts for the port you will use. Then compare it with the target device’s required or supported input. A bank with more mAh may still charge more slowly than a smaller bank if its output wattage is lower. Conversely, a high-wattage bank does not force a device to accept more power than the device and cable support.
Confirm port and cable compatibility
- Match the bank’s physical port to the cable you carry.
- Check the cable’s connector at the device end as well as the bank end; a cable that fits is not automatically one that supports the intended charging mode.
- Read the bank’s specification for the output of each port and, if you will use more than one port, the stated behavior when ports operate together.
- Check the device specification for its input requirement. For a laptop, use the manufacturer’s stated input power as the comparison point rather than assuming a phone-oriented bank will work.
- Verify the bank’s own input specification so you know what charger and cable can replenish it between outings.
Manufacturers can state output differently across ports or operating modes. Use the specification sheet for the exact configuration you plan to carry; do not infer performance from the headline mAh number.
Do not promise charge counts from capacity alone
It is tempting to translate a capacity label into a fixed number of phone charges. That calculation would need the phone’s battery energy, the bank’s voltage and conversion behavior, charging losses, and the device’s use during charging. Without product-specific and device-specific data, a precise charge count would be misleading. Use capacity to compare relative endurance, then leave room for real-world variation.

Size, weight, and labels are part of the specification
Higher capacity often comes with a larger or heavier product as a practical trade-off, but there is no universal size-to-capacity ratio. Compare the manufacturer’s stated dimensions and weight for each candidate. Measure the space in the bag or pocket you will actually use, and account for the cable and any protective case.
Choose portability for the itinerary
- For walking-heavy travel, prioritize a weight you will carry willingly all day.
- For remote work or long transfers, accept additional size only when the extra stored energy and output solve a real need.
- For air travel, keep the bank accessible in cabin baggage rather than buried where it may be difficult to present for inspection.
- Keep the capacity and Wh marking visible. A bank that is technically suitable but impossible to identify at the gate can create avoidable delays.
Airline rules: the U.S. FAA baseline and the 2026 international update
U.S. passenger guidance
The FAA classifies power banks and portable chargers as lithium-ion spare batteries. Spare batteries must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. The FAA baseline limits a lithium-ion battery to 100 Wh per battery without airline approval. Airlines can impose stricter quantity or Wh limits, so the FAA number is not a guarantee that a particular carrier will accept a particular bank.
For a bank in the 101–160 Wh range, confirm the operating airline’s approval process and limits before departure. Do not apply rules for a battery installed inside an electronic device to a power bank; a power bank is a spare battery. The FAA’s detailed passenger guidance, including the mAh-to-Wh formula, is at https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsafe/airline-passengers-and-batteries.
ICAO’s 2026 passenger restrictions
ICAO approved Addendum No. 1 to the 2025–2026 Technical Instructions on 27 March 2026. The addendum limits passengers to two power banks, prohibits recharging power banks during flight, and recommends against using them to recharge other portable electronic devices onboard. ICAO states:
“Following the improvements agreed today, these devices will now be limited to two per passenger, and passengers will be prohibited from recharging them during flights.”
The publication record for the technical instructions lists Addendum No. 1 and Corrigendum No. 2, dated 7 May 2026, at ICAO Doc 9284. The addendum information is available from ICAO’s official addendum notice.
These are international provisions, but implementation can vary by country and carrier. An airline may set a lower quantity, a lower Wh threshold, additional handling requirements, or restrictions on using a bank in the cabin. Check the operating airline shortly before departure, including each carrier when an itinerary has connections.

What IATA tells travelers to check
The International Air Transport Association advises travelers to inspect the power bank’s Wh rating and confirm the rules with their airline. Its current traveler page reports that 44% of surveyed passengers travel with a power bank; the page does not state the survey year, so it should not be read as a dated market statistic. See IATA’s Safe Travel with Lithium Batteries guidance.

Pre-flight checklist
- Read the bank’s printed Wh rating and make sure the marking is legible.
- Confirm whether the bank is at or below 100 Wh, or whether your airline must approve a 101–160 Wh battery.
- Check the operating airline’s current page or contact its baggage desk for quantity and handling limits.
- Pack the power bank in carry-on baggage, never in checked baggage.
- Keep it accessible in case security or airline staff need to inspect the label.
- Plan not to recharge the power bank onboard, and do not rely on using it to recharge another portable device during the flight.
- If your carry-on is taken at the gate, remove the power bank and follow the airline’s instructions instead of allowing the spare battery to travel in the aircraft hold.
A repeatable method for choosing between candidates
- Write down the devices and the days or hours between outlets. Include the device you cannot afford to lose power on.
- Set a capacity range. Use the devices and itinerary to decide how much stored energy is useful; do not choose solely by the largest mAh label.
- Record the labeled Wh. Use the printed value, or calculate it only when both mAh and voltage are stated.
- Set the output requirement. Compare the bank’s stated watts with the input requirement of the most demanding device.
- Map the ports and cables. Confirm every connector and the manufacturer’s output behavior for the ports you will use.
- Compare dimensions and weight. Reject a bank that is too heavy or bulky for the way you travel, even if its capacity is attractive.
- Inspect the physical marking. The capacity and Wh information should remain readable after the bank is placed in its case or pouch.
- Apply the itinerary’s airline rule. Check the carrier, route, Wh value, quantity, and carry-on requirement immediately before travel.
- Choose the candidate that passes every filter. A bank that fails output compatibility or airline acceptance is not rescued by extra capacity.
How to compare several power banks without being misled
| Comparison axis | What to record | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Stored energy | mAh, labeled Wh, and the voltage used if conversion is necessary | Does the energy suit the time away from outlets and the devices you listed? |
| Charging output | Maximum watts by port and any stated multi-port behavior | Can the bank meet the target device’s input requirement? |
| Connector compatibility | Bank ports, device connectors, and cable specifications | Can you make the complete connection with the cables you will carry? |
| Recharge input | The bank’s own input port and supported input power | Can your existing wall charger and cable replenish it in the time available? |
| Portability | Verified dimensions and weight | Will you carry it comfortably, and does it fit the intended pocket or bag? |
| Air-travel evidence | Legible Wh marking and the carrier’s current policy | Can you carry it in the cabin on every flight in the itinerary? |
When a specification is not stated, treat it as unknown rather than filling the gap with an assumption. A product page that lists mAh but omits voltage, Wh, output wattage, or weight does not provide enough information for a confident travel decision.

Worked decision examples
Example: a phone-focused day
List the phone, expected time away from outlets, and the phone’s connector. Compare candidate capacity and Wh, then select a weight you will carry. Check that the output wattage and cable match the phone. There is no need to pay for laptop-level output if no laptop is part of the itinerary, but the bank still needs a legible Wh marking for air travel.
Example: phone, tablet, and headphones
Prioritize enough stored energy for the combined devices and inspect the output for the tablet, not just the phone. Confirm the available ports and the manufacturer’s stated behavior when more than one port is used. Compare the complete kit’s weight, including cables, with the convenience of carrying one bank instead of several smaller ones.
Example: a laptop workday
Read the laptop’s input requirement first. Eliminate candidates whose stated output is below that requirement, regardless of their mAh figure. Confirm the connector and cable, read the bank’s Wh marking, and ask the operating airline whether the battery is accepted. If the label places it in the 101–160 Wh range, obtain the carrier’s approval before travel rather than relying on the general FAA baseline.
What to do when a specification or airline answer is unclear
- Wh is absent: Look for the manufacturer’s voltage and calculate using the FAA formula; if voltage is not stated, choose a product with a printed Wh value.
- Output is listed only as a connector name: Treat the wattage as unknown and request the full specification before buying.
- Several ports have one combined output figure: Ask the manufacturer or read the detailed table to determine how that figure applies to simultaneous charging.
- The airline website and airport staff appear to differ: Follow the operating carrier’s current instruction and carry the bank where it can be inspected; do not place it in checked baggage.
- The bag is gate-checked: Remove the power bank before the bag enters the aircraft hold and keep it with you in the cabin.
- The trip has multiple airlines: Check every operating carrier, not only the airline that sold the ticket.
The most reliable choice is the smallest, lightest bank that has enough labeled energy for the itinerary, the required output for the most demanding device, compatible ports and cables, and a Wh marking and airline status you can verify.
