Choose a portable music player by checking it against the files you own, how much music you want to carry, and the headphones you use. “FLAC support” alone is not enough: formats, file restrictions, storage, transfer steps and playback controls all vary by model.
Start with the library you actually want to carry
Inventory your files
List the formats in your collection—such as FLAC, MP3, WAV, ALAC or DSD—and note any unusual bit depths or sample rates you rely on. Check the exact model’s manual or official specifications for those formats and limits. A format name on a product page does not guarantee that every file using that format will play.

Also identify where the files came from. Some platform-downloaded FLAC files may be encrypted or otherwise restricted and may not work as ordinary local files. FiiO’s ECHO MINI FAQ says this can happen with some downloads and recommends converting supported-range files to compatible, ordinary files. Check the relevant service’s terms and download options before converting or transferring anything.
Estimate how much space you need
Check the size of the folders you intend to take with you, rather than assuming every player needs to hold your entire archive. Decide whether you want the full library on the device or a smaller, rotating selection. That choice affects both the required card capacity and how often you will manage music.

Check storage and card requirements before buying
Storage limits are model-specific. For example, FiiO lists the ECHO MINI with 512MB/8GB storage and microSD expansion up to 256GB on its product page. The HiBy R6III (2025) manual describes 64GB of internal storage and microSD support up to 2TB. These examples do not establish a general limit for music players—or guarantee that every card within a stated maximum will work.
Distinguish a card slot from included storage. HiBy’s R1 manual says the player has no internal storage and instructs users to prepare a microSD card for local music. Before choosing a card, confirm the exact model’s maximum card capacity, supported filesystem, whether a card is included, and the manufacturer’s formatting and library-scan instructions.

Verify import, scanning and metadata handling
A player can support your audio formats and still be inconvenient if its transfer and library workflow does not suit you. Look for instructions explaining how to connect it to a computer or prepare a card, where music files should go, how the library is scanned, and whether it reads the tags and artwork you use. Manuals are more useful than broad brand-level claims because import steps can differ between models.
Prefer a device whose documented process matches how you organize music. If you use folders, confirm that folder browsing is available; if you rely on artist, album or genre tags, check how the player indexes them. When the documentation does not describe a feature you need, do not assume it exists—ask the manufacturer or choose a better-documented model.

Choose between a focused player and an Android-based one
Dedicated local playback
A simpler player can be a good fit if your priority is selecting music and pressing play, especially if you value physical controls or fewer app and notification distractions. Check that its navigation, screen and playback controls work for your routine; “simple” does not automatically mean easier for every listener.
Android and app flexibility
An Android-based player may suit you if you want an app environment alongside local playback. The HiBy R6III (2025) manual documents Android 12 and local playback. Confirm that the particular apps and services you need are available and compatible with the device; Android does not by itself ensure that protected service downloads can be used as local files.

Match portability, battery and controls to daily use
Compare the exact device’s dimensions, weight, screen and physical controls with where and how you plan to carry it. A large screen can help with browsing but may take more pocket space; a small device can be easier to carry but less comfortable to navigate. Treat battery figures as manufacturer claims, not independent test results. FiiO lists 15 hours for the ECHO MINI on its product page; real use can vary with settings and use patterns, including Wi-Fi, screen activity, output settings and headphone load.

Confirm the player has the connection you intend to use: the right wired plug, any balanced connection you specifically need, or Bluetooth if you listen wirelessly. For wired headphones, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the player and your headphones rather than relying on a general claim that a device can drive “high-end” headphones. Available documentation does not support a consistent cross-model output-power ranking, so avoid choosing by unsupported power comparisons.
Use model examples as checks, not as a brand-wide ranking

These examples illustrate why specifications should be checked at model level. The cited documents do not provide a consistent basis for comparing current prices, stock or real-world battery endurance across the models.
Test the setup before transferring the full library
- Back up your music and card. Keep a separate copy of the library before changing cards or formatting one.
- Prepare the card using the exact model’s instructions. Follow the manual’s filesystem and formatting directions; do not assume the player will accept a card simply because it is below the stated capacity limit.
- Transfer a small test set. Include representative formats, folder structures and tagged files from your collection.
- Scan and inspect the library. Check that files appear in the expected folders or categories and that artist, album and other metadata display correctly.
- Play each important file type and test your headphones. Confirm playback, navigation and the connections you plan to use before copying the rest of the collection.
Make the final choice from the exact model’s documentation
Before buying, confirm the current manual or official product listing for format limits, storage, card support, transfer steps, battery claim and headphone connections. Check current price and availability separately, since they change and are not established by the specifications above. Choose the least complicated device that meets your library and listening needs; step up to app flexibility or more storage only when those features solve a real requirement.
