Capacity is a limit, not a measure of comfort or fit, so sit in a chair when you can, especially if getting in and out easily matters.
Start with how you will carry and use the chair
For backpacking, prioritize packed weight and the full packed dimensions: a light chair can still be awkward if its case is too long for your pack. For car or front-country camping, you may be able to trade extra weight and bulk for a roomier, more comfortable chair. REI makes the same distinction in its camping-chair buying guide.

Check capacity and fit as separate questions
Compare your weight with the stated capacity for the exact chair version. Then check seat width and depth against your body and preferred sitting position. A capacity rating does not tell you whether a chair will feel roomy, and the cited manufacturer and retailer pages do not establish a universal fit formula or safety margin.

Use seat height to judge entry and exit
REI says standard-height chairs are generally easier to get in and out of. A low chair may feel less tippy on sand or uneven ground, and may work where venues limit chair-back height. Since ease of standing depends on the person as well as the chair, try the seat if possible. The REI guide recommends a sit test for unfamiliar designs.
Compare packed weight and packed dimensions
Use packed weight when comparing what you will carry; chair-only weight can be lower. Check the complete case dimensions against your pack or storage space as well.

Match the chair design to the ground and stability you need
- Four-legged chairs: REI describes classic designs as stable and typically high enough to make sitting down and standing up easier.
- Low chairs: They can be less tippy on sand or uneven terrain.
- Three-legged chairs: They can weigh less than four-legged counterparts but may be less stable, according to REI.
- Rockers: They work best on even ground.
- Two-legged designs: They can pitch backward if the sitter leans too far.
These are general design trade-offs, not a guarantee that every chair of a given type behaves the same way. Consider the campsite surface and how you tend to sit.
