Choose the games first, then choose the device. Make a list of the platformers you actually want, confirm that each is sold for your region and preferred edition, and check its operating-system and hardware requirements. After that, compare where you will play, whether you prefer keyboard or gamepad controls, the game’s accessibility settings, and—if you are considering a handheld—the screen, built-in controls, and performance on that exact model.

There is no universally best platform for platformers. A precision 2D game, a three-dimensional exploration game, and a cooperative party platformer can favor different setups. The framework below helps you make a purchase that fits your library and habits rather than a generic platform ranking.

1. Begin with a must-play list

Write down the titles that would justify the purchase. Include games you already own, games you plan to buy, desired downloadable content, language requirements, and whether you need a physical or digital edition. Then verify each title on the store or platform listing for the exact region in which you will buy it.

Check availability, not assumptions

A game’s presence on one storefront does not prove that the same edition exists on another platform. Confirm the supported platform, edition, downloadable content, language options, and any account or online requirement shown on the listing. Platform exclusivity and regional catalogs change, so use the current listing instead of an old recommendation.

#1 Best Overall
Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Check technical requirements on PC

Steam Support advises checking both the hardware requirements and the compatible operating systems when a game may not run on your current platform. Compare the listing with your PC’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, and operating-system version. A game that launches is not necessarily a good fit for precise platforming if it cannot maintain stable performance at your chosen resolution.

Verify a handheld separately

A handheld PC still needs the game’s operating system and hardware requirements, but the comparison does not end there. Check whether the particular device can sustain the game’s intended performance, whether menus work with the built-in controls, and whether text and interface elements remain readable on its screen.

2. Match the device to where you play

Where you play PC Home console Handheld PC
Typical setting Desk monitor or TV; can also support couch play Couch or TV-centered sessions Portable sessions with a small integrated screen
Primary input choice Keyboard, mouse, or a supported controller Gamepad supplied or paired with the system Built-in gamepad controls, with external options on some devices
Main checks Operating system, hardware requirements, controller support Game availability, edition, accessories, and display setup Handheld compatibility, legibility, controller navigation, and device-specific performance
Best reason to choose it Flexible hardware and input options Simple TV-based setup and consistent gamepad use Play away from a desk or TV while retaining a PC library

These are tendencies, not guarantees. A PC can be your living-room machine, a console can support a monitor, and a handheld can be docked. Use the table to identify the questions to verify, not to infer that every game behaves identically on each device.

3. Decide how you want to control the game

Keyboard versus gamepad on PC

On PC, a controller is optional and depends on the title and your preference. Some platformers feel natural with directional keys and a few nearby buttons; others are designed around analog movement, triggers, or a gamepad’s layout. Check the game listing, manual, or in-game settings for keyboard and controller support before buying an accessory.

Steam describes Big Picture mode as an interface designed for TV and controller play. That makes a PC controller relevant for couch sessions, but it does not establish that every platformer requires one. If you are unsure, test the game with your existing input device during a refundable purchase window where the store’s policy allows it.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.

Consider remapping before judging a layout

Look for a control-remapping menu, separate bindings for movement and actions, sensitivity controls for analog sticks, and options to toggle rather than hold a button. A layout that is uncomfortable by default may become suitable after remapping, while a game with no alternatives may remain difficult even when the platform itself supports your preferred controller.

Use accessibility guidance as a checklist

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 107 recommends in-game remapping and less demanding alternatives when a game uses repeated taps, long presses, or simultaneous inputs. Treat those as features to look for, not as a promise that a particular platform provides them automatically. Check the game’s own settings for remapping, hold-to-toggle options, reduced input sequences, adjustable timing, and other controls that address your needs.

4. Treat a handheld as a distinct format

Microsoft’s handheld guidance says the form factor combines a small screen, gamepad input, and different defaults from a desktop PC. Developer guidance calls for an appropriate resolution, legible fonts, gamepad defaults, and controller navigation. In practical terms, a game can be technically compatible yet frustrating if its menus require a mouse, its text is too small, or important prompts are difficult to read at the device’s normal viewing distance.

“Gamers expect console-like experiences on handhelds.” — Microsoft, Guidelines for the Handheld Compatibility program, designed by Xbox, current page accessed October 13, 2026.

Check the four compatibility labels

Microsoft’s Xbox-designed Handheld Compatibility guidelines use four labels. Read the label for the exact device or storefront listing rather than assuming that a result for one handheld applies to another.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Label What it indicates How to use it
Handheld Optimized The game should be playable with the embedded controller without changing in-game display, performance, or input settings. Best starting point when you want a console-like setup with minimal adjustment.
Mostly Compatible The game works in most respects but may require a change or have a limited issue identified by the program. Read the noted limitation and decide whether the workaround is acceptable.
Unsupported The game does not meet the program’s handheld requirements. Do not buy it for that device without confirming a specific, reliable workaround.
Unknown The title has not received a published result in the program. Check community reports cautiously and test only when the store’s return policy protects you.

Microsoft’s test language is explicit: “Default setup on a handheld device must enable full gameplay access without requiring players to modify any in-game settings for display, performance, or input to run well on the handheld using only the controller.” The statement describes the program’s test expectation, not a guarantee that every game will feel equally good to every player.

Separate compatibility from performance

Microsoft’s August 20, 2025 announcement distinguishes Handheld Compatibility from Windows Performance Fit. Compatibility covers controller input, iconography, text input, resolution, and legibility. Performance Fit estimates how a game performs on a particular supported device. At the time of that announcement, “Should play great” represented an average of 60 frames per second or better on the device, while “Should play well” represented an average of 30 frames per second or better.

Those thresholds are Microsoft’s announcement criteria, not a universal definition of smooth platforming and not independent testing. A 30-frame-per-second result may be acceptable for one slower-paced game and unsatisfying for a precision challenge. Microsoft also reported that thousands of games had been tested and verified by the program at that time; that vendor-reported total is not a platformer-specific statistic.

5. Match the platform to the kind of platformer you enjoy

“Platformer” describes a broad family of games. Before choosing hardware, identify the traits that matter to you:

  • Movement feel: Decide whether you prefer immediate jumps, inertia and momentum, grappling, wall movement, or vehicle-based traversal.
  • Pace: Fast reaction stages place different demands on input latency and frame consistency than relaxed exploration.
  • Challenge: Look for the difficulty curve, checkpoint frequency, assist options, and whether failure costs progress.
  • Structure: Choose between linear levels, connected exploration, puzzle rooms, open zones, or a mixture.
  • Perspective: Two-dimensional and three-dimensional games differ in camera behavior, depth perception, and interface needs.
  • Co-op: If local or online cooperation is essential, verify the supported player count and the required services on the platform you select.
  • Text and menus: Story-heavy or inventory-heavy games need readable fonts and practical navigation, especially on a handheld.

Use examples to clarify taste, not to rank platforms

PC Gamer’s editorial examples show why one platformer label is not enough to choose a device. Rayman Legends is presented as emphasizing cooperative play and varied levels; Mark of the Ninja: Remastered leans toward stealth and puzzles; Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom centers on momentum-based movement and open zones. These examples illustrate different control and display demands. They are editorial examples, not an objective ranking or compatibility data for every platform.

6. Compare setup and ownership requirements

PC

Confirm the operating system, minimum and recommended hardware, available storage, display resolution, and controller support. If you plan to play on a TV, check that your chosen controller works in both the game and the launcher interface. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for setup or menus if the game does not offer complete controller navigation.

Home console

Confirm that the exact game and downloadable content are sold for the console generation you own. Check whether local co-op needs additional controllers and whether online play requires a platform service. These requirements vary by system and title, so rely on the current store page rather than a general platform comparison.

Handheld PC

Check battery and power settings only after confirming the game’s baseline compatibility. A title may run acceptably while plugged in but fall short on a lower power profile. Verify that the default display mode is readable, that every essential menu can be reached with the built-in controls, and that the game’s performance indicator refers to your specific device or a genuinely similar configuration.

7. Use a simple decision path

Choose PC when flexibility is your priority

PC is the broadest fit when your must-play list spans different storefronts, you want to choose between keyboard and gamepad, or you already own suitable hardware. It requires the most checking: operating-system support, hardware requirements, display setup, and controller behavior are all your responsibility.

Choose a home console when the TV experience matters most

A console suits a reader who wants a straightforward couch setup and expects to use a gamepad. The deciding questions are whether the required games are available for that console and region, whether the desired editions and co-op modes are supported, and whether the ongoing online requirements fit your use.

Choose a handheld when portability is decisive

A handheld is appropriate when playing away from a desk or TV outweighs the compromises of a small screen and device-specific performance limits. Do not buy on portability alone: verify the compatibility label, performance indicator, controller navigation, and legibility for every must-play title.

Choose more than one device only for a clear split

Owning multiple platforms makes sense when your essential games are divided between them or when you genuinely need both TV and portable play. List the games that require each device and the sessions each format enables; otherwise, a second platform may duplicate a library you already can play comfortably.

8. Follow this pre-purchase checklist

  1. Write your must-play platformer list, including editions, downloadable content, languages, and co-op needs.
  2. Check the current store listing for each title in your region.
  3. On PC, compare the listed operating-system and hardware requirements with your machine.
  4. Decide whether you prefer keyboard, a controller, or both, and verify support in each game.
  5. Review remapping, toggle, sensitivity, and other input-accessibility options in the game settings or documentation.
  6. For a home console, confirm the correct console generation, accessory requirements, and online-service conditions.
  7. For a handheld, read the device-specific compatibility label and performance result.
  8. Watch for small-screen issues: font size, HUD clarity, camera readability, and controller-only menu navigation.
  9. Consider your normal session length, location, and whether you will play plugged in or on battery.
  10. Buy the platform only after every must-play title passes the checks that matter to you.

9. Troubleshoot before returning the platform

The game launches but controls do not work

Confirm that the game recognizes the controller in its own settings, not only in the launcher. Try a supported input mode, reconnect the controller, and inspect the game’s binding screen. If menus still require a mouse or keyboard, decide whether that limitation conflicts with your intended setup—particularly on a handheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The text or interface is unreadable

Check the game’s resolution, display scale, subtitle, and HUD options. On a handheld, compare the default screen mode with the compatibility guidance. If the game requires repeated manual adjustments to make basic menus usable, it does not meet the convenience promised by an optimized default setup.

Performance is inconsistent

Compare your device with the listed requirements and the device-specific Performance Fit result, if available. Distinguish a compatibility problem from a performance problem: controller navigation and legibility can be correct while frame rate remains inadequate for your preferred style. Lowering settings may help, but do not assume a result measured on one handheld transfers to another.

The title is marked Unknown

Treat Unknown as an invitation to verify, not as a positive or negative verdict. Search the game’s current documentation and reliable owner reports for your exact device, then use the store’s return policy as a safety net where applicable. Avoid assuming that an untested game will behave like a similar-looking title.

10. The practical rule

Buy the platform that clears the most important games on your list with the fewest compromises in your actual play setting. Availability is the first gate; controls and accessibility determine whether you can play comfortably; handheld compatibility, legibility, and device-specific performance determine whether portability is worth the trade-off. Once those checks pass, let your preferred movement style, challenge level, co-op needs, and session habits make the final decision.
