Which pirate game should you play?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Shared-world sailing, discovery, and unscripted crew stories | Sea of Thieves | Rare describes Adventure as a shared pirate world for roaming, discovering, fighting, and looting. Its game information also describes ship-to-ship combat, quests, and player-created stories. |
| Linked story quests within a shared adventure | Sea of Thieves | Rare describes Tall Tales as linked cinematic narratives, and A Pirate’s Life as an original story campaign crossing into Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. |
| Naval combat and ship-build choice | Skull and Bones | Ubisoft frames it as an open-world naval action RPG in which ship combat and build choice define the captain’s journey, with PvE or PvEvP play. |
| A Caribbean pirate action-adventure in a historical setting | Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag | Ubisoft’s description places this 2013 pirate action-adventure in the Caribbean in 1715. |
| A classic mix of pirate activities | Sid Meier’s Pirates! | Take-Two’s announcement for the Wii edition lists treasure maps, missions, sword fighting, ship combat, and dancing. |

Compare the kind of pirate adventure you want
For open-ended sailing and crew stories: Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves is the clearest fit if you want to roam a shared pirate world and let encounters shape a session. Rare’s Adventure overview emphasizes roaming, discovery, fighting, and looting; its game information also includes ship combat, quests, and player-created stories. That mix means the adventure is not simply a linear, single-player campaign.
There are authored story experiences as well. Rare describes Tall Tales as linked cinematic narratives. Its A Pirate’s Life page and official FAQ describe a story campaign that brings Sea of Thieves together with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean; the FAQ calls it “an original story campaign that sees the worlds of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and Sea of Thieves colliding in epic fashion.”
#1 Best Overall
- Explore the Land of Ooo freely, discover secrets and collect loot with playable fan-favourite characters, Finn, Jake, BMO and Marceline
- Set sail across the high seas between kingdoms and venture into uncharted territories to figure out what's going on
- Upgrade your heroes, use items, spells, potions and unique ultimate hero abilities to battle bad guys in fast-paced tactical combat
- This product is code in box. It does not contain a disc or cartridge
For ship-focused combat and build choices: Skull and Bones
Skull and Bones is the most direct starting point if your priority is naval combat and choosing how to build your ship. Ubisoft describes it as an open-world naval action RPG and identifies ship combat and build choice as central to the captain’s journey. Its description also distinguishes PvE and PvEvP play. This is a statement of design focus, not independent evidence that its combat is better than another game’s.
For a Caribbean pirate action-adventure: Black Flag
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is framed by Ubisoft as a pirate action-adventure in the Caribbean in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic. That makes it the choice here for someone drawn to that setting and an action-adventure format rather than primarily to shared-world play or ship-build choice. The concise official description does not establish detailed claims about its story systems or current editions.

For a classic variety of pirate activities: Sid Meier’s Pirates!
Sid Meier’s Pirates! offers a different, classic alternative to the newer shared-world and naval-RPG framing. Take-Two’s announcement for the Wii edition names treasure maps, missions, sword fighting, ship combat, and dancing. The Firaxis / 2K manual documents additional systems. The Wii announcement should not be taken as confirmation that this edition—or any particular version—is currently available for your platform.

What to check before choosing
Decide whether you want shared play or a more authored adventure
Sea of Thieves foregrounds a shared world, crew play, and stories that can emerge from a session, while also offering linked Tall Tales. Skull and Bones describes PvE and PvEvP options. If playing with others is a deciding factor, check the current requirements for your platform and region rather than assuming every edition or mode works the same way.

Ubisoft’s current Skull and Bones page advertises cross-play and cross-progression, as well as a free trial on Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Sony’s PS5 page describes Skull and Bones as a co-op pirate open-world action RPG and currently mentions PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog access. Trial offers, catalog access, regional availability, and cross-play terms can change, so confirm them on the live platform and publisher pages.
Check the exact edition and store listing
Availability and edition details for Black Flag and Sid Meier’s Pirates! are not established by the cited publisher descriptions. Before purchasing any of these games, confirm that the listing matches your platform, region, and preferred format; a title’s older announcement or general brand page is not proof that a specific edition is currently sold.
