“Physical” Nintendo Switch 2 games do not all include the game on a cartridge-sized card. A regular game card is the physical game medium; a game-key card unlocks a download; and some physical packages contain only a download code. Check the exact edition and format on the package before buying. Then compare its storage requirement with the space available on your console or a compatible microSD Express card.
What do you actually get in the package?
The word “physical” can describe different products. Check the specific game’s packaging or listing rather than assuming every box contains the full game on a card. Nintendo explains the distinctions in its Nintendo Switch 2 information and game-key card overview.

| Regular game card | A physical game card. Check the title’s packaging for its storage requirements. | Use the card as the physical game medium. Do not assume there will be no updates or additional downloads. |
| Game-key card | A card that unlocks a download; it does not contain the full game data. | Download the game first, then keep the card inserted to play. |
| Download code in physical packaging | A code, not a game card. Nintendo says some publishers sell Switch 2 Edition games this way. | Redeem the code and download the game. Verify the title’s instructions and storage needs. |
| Digital purchase | Downloadable software bought through Nintendo eShop. | Download and access the software through the applicable console and account licensing arrangement. |
Does a game-key card need an internet connection?
Yes, for the initial download and first launch. Nintendo says a game-key card needs an internet connection when you launch the game for the first time; the download also needs enough free space in console storage or on a microSD Express card. The key card must be inserted to play. After that first launch, Nintendo says an internet connection is not required to start the game.
How much storage does a Switch 2 game need?
It depends on the title. Nintendo’s guidance is that storage requirements vary by game: check the physical package for a physical version, or the game’s Nintendo eShop listing for a digital version. Check the available space before purchase rather than relying on the format name.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo lists the console’s internal storage as 256 GB, with some of that space reserved for system use, so the full capacity is not available for games and other content. To see remaining space, open System Settings → Data Management.
Do you need a microSD Express card?
Not necessarily. Whether you need more storage depends on the games you choose and the free space already available. If you do expand storage, Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Standard microSD cards cannot be used to store or load digital games on Switch 2. Nintendo also says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used.

- NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
A compatible microSD Express card can store downloaded software, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and video. Before buying one, make sure the product is explicitly identified as microSD Express and compare its capacity with your expected downloads.

Save data stays in the console’s system memory whether you play from a game card or downloaded software. It cannot be copied to a microSD Express card. Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data; after redownloading the software, you can resume using that data.

A quick check before you buy
- Identify the format. Confirm whether the package contains a regular game card, a game-key card, or a download code.
- Check the space requirement. Use the package information for a physical version or the Nintendo eShop listing for a digital version.
- Compare it with available storage. On the console, open System Settings → Data Management.
- Choose expansion storage only if needed. Switch 2 requires microSD Express to store or load digital games from a card; older standard microSD cards are not compatible for that use.
- Plan for saves separately. Game saves remain in console system memory, not on the game card or microSD Express card.
