The correct phono preamp for a Rega Planar 6 RS Edition is determined by the cartridge fitted to your turntable, not by the deck’s name alone. The factory configuration is the Nd9 moving-magnet (MM) cartridge, while the Ania option is moving-coil (MC). Use an MM input for an Nd9, an MC-compatible input for an Ania, and first check whether your amplifier already includes the matching phono input.
Rega’s own product paths are straightforward: the Fono MM MK5 is the named MM stage for the Nd9 route, and Rega offers an Ania-and-Fono-MC package for the MC configuration. The Planar 6 RS manual requires the tonearm’s external phono leads to connect to a suitable phono stage, so a separate unit is needed whenever the amplifier has only line-level inputs.

Start with the cartridge, not the turntable model
The Planar 6 RS Edition is sold with two relevant cartridge configurations. Rega lists the Nd9 as the moving-magnet choice and the Ania as the moving-coil choice on its official product page. Those cartridge types generate different electrical requirements, so the same phono input cannot be assumed to suit both.

| Planar 6 RS configuration | Cartridge type | Phono-stage input to look for | Named Rega path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Factory Nd9 | Moving magnet (MM) | MM input or dedicated MM stage | Fono MM MK5 |
| Ania option | Moving coil (MC) | MC-compatible input with settings that suit the Ania | Fono MC, included in Rega’s Ania package |
The Nd9’s nominal output is listed as 5–6 mV in the Planar 6 RS user manual. That figure identifies the cartridge’s published output; it is not a universal setting for every MM cartridge. For an Ania, use the cartridge and phono-stage specifications together rather than copying an MM setup.

If you bought the deck second-hand, the original packaging is unavailable, or the cartridge has been replaced, inspect the cartridge body and any invoice or setup record. Confirm the exact model before ordering a preamp. A Planar 6 RS with a replacement cartridge may no longer follow the factory Nd9 or Ania pairing.
MM and MC: what the distinction changes
MM input for the Nd9
An MM stage is the direct electrical match for the Nd9. Rega describes the Fono MM MK5 as a dedicated moving-magnet phono stage, making it the explicitly documented Rega choice when the deck retains its factory MM cartridge. An MM input on an integrated amplifier can perform the same role if its specification confirms MM compatibility.
MC input for the Ania
The Ania requires an MC-compatible stage. Rega’s announcement of additional Planar 6 RS options describes an Ania MC package supplied with a Fono MC stage: Rega’s announcement. Rega’s phono-stage range also discusses stages intended for typical low-output MC cartridges, but the exact gain and loading must still be checked against the Ania and the particular stage you select.

An MM-only input is designed for the signal level and electrical behaviour of moving-magnet cartridges. Plugging an Ania into it does not turn it into an MC stage; the result can be very low volume, excessive noise, or an otherwise incorrect operating condition. Choose an input explicitly labelled MC, or a configurable MM/MC stage whose published settings include the Ania’s requirements.
Check the amplifier before buying another box
Trace the signal path you already own. The Planar 6 RS tonearm terminates in external phono leads, and the manual states: “The tonearm external phono leads must be connected to a suitable phono stage.” The complete connection instruction appears in the Planar 6 RS User Manual.
- Look at the amplifier or receiver’s rear panel and manual for an input labelled Phono.
- Verify whether that input is MM, MC, or switchable. A socket labelled only “Line,” “Aux,” “CD,” or “Tape” is not a phono input.
- Match the input to the installed cartridge: MM for Nd9, MC for Ania.
- If the amplifier has no suitable phono input, connect the turntable to an external phono stage, then connect the stage’s line-level output to an Aux, Line, CD, or equivalent input.
Do not infer the specification from the amplifier’s price or age. Some integrated amplifiers include phono circuitry and some do not. What Hi-Fi?’s Planar 6 RS Edition review published October 8, 2026, described its review system without a built-in phono stage, but that observation does not establish what your amplifier contains.
Rega’s documented phono-stage routes
| Stage | Best-supported use | What the evidence establishes | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rega Fono MM MK5 | Planar 6 RS with Nd9 MM when the amplifier lacks a suitable MM input | Rega identifies it as a dedicated MM stage | That your cartridge is still Nd9 (or another compatible MM) and that your amplifier has an available line input |
| Rega Fono MC | Planar 6 RS with Ania MC | Rega offers it with the Ania in a Planar 6 RS package; Rega’s range covers typical low-output MC applications | Published gain, loading, and input details for the exact Ania-and-stage combination |
| Another MM stage | Nd9 or another MM cartridge | Potentially suitable if its manufacturer explicitly supports the cartridge | Input type, gain, loading, connectors, grounding, and regional power requirements |
| Another MC or configurable MM/MC stage | Ania or a future cartridge | Potentially suitable only when its specifications cover the cartridge | MC gain and loading range, noise performance, input capacitance or resistance where specified, and the maker’s compatibility guidance |
The table separates documented Rega pairings from general alternatives. No third-party model has been validated here against the Nd9 or Ania, so treat any other product as a specification-matching exercise rather than an automatic recommendation.

How to evaluate a third-party phono preamp
1. Confirm the cartridge input
Find the manufacturer’s technical page or manual and make sure the unit has an MM input for the Nd9 or an MC input for the Ania. A switch labelled MM/MC is useful only if the corresponding electrical ranges are published.
2. Check gain and loading information
For MM, look for a stated input capacitance or a clearly documented compatibility range when the cartridge maker provides one. For MC, check the available gain and load settings against the Ania’s published requirements. If a seller lists only “MM/MC” without numbers or a manual, obtain the full specification before purchase.
3. Verify the connection layout
The turntable uses external phono leads. Ensure the stage has the appropriate left and right phono sockets and a ground connection or grounding arrangement compatible with your amplifier and cables. The stage’s output must be line level for a normal Aux or Line input.
4. Consider adjustability only when you need it
A fixed MM stage can be simpler when you will keep the Nd9. A configurable MM/MC stage can make a future cartridge change easier, but extra switches do not guarantee compatibility. Select the unit by the installed cartridge’s requirements first, then treat future flexibility as a secondary benefit.
5. Separate compatibility from sound-quality claims
Electrical compatibility can be established from specifications. Claims that one stage sounds better with this turntable require a controlled comparison or reliable evidence specific to the combination. The official product pages and manual do not establish a universally best-sounding preamp, so do not choose on an unsupported “synergy” promise.
Questions to answer before shopping
Write down the exact cartridge before opening a retailer’s comparison page. The Planar 6 RS name identifies the turntable, but it does not tell a replacement-cartridge owner whether the fitted unit is still an Nd9 or Ania. A cartridge body marking, the purchase invoice, or the original product configuration can resolve that uncertainty. If none is available, ask a Rega dealer to identify the cartridge rather than guessing from photographs.
Next, identify the amplifier input that will receive the signal. A built-in phono input can eliminate the need for a separate box, but only when its MM or MC type matches the cartridge. If the amplifier has only line inputs, budget for an external stage and make sure its output is a normal line-level signal. Never connect a turntable’s raw phono leads directly to Aux or CD; those inputs expect a different signal level and equalisation.

For a third-party purchase, save the manufacturer’s manual before ordering. Confirm the input mode, gain, loading, left and right sockets, ground arrangement, and power-supply version for your region. For an MC stage, the published gain and load range is especially important. For an MM stage, note any stated input capacitance or cartridge-compatibility guidance. A retailer’s short “MM/MC” label is not enough evidence by itself.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What the Nd9 5–6 mV figure tells you
Rega’s Planar 6 RS User Manual lists the Nd9’s nominal output voltage as 5–6 mV. This is a published cartridge characteristic, not a promise that every MM input will perform identically or a substitute for reading the chosen stage’s specifications. It helps explain why the Nd9 belongs on an MM input, while the Ania must be assessed as an MC cartridge with its own gain and loading requirements.
Do not turn the 5–6 mV number into an arbitrary gain setting. A stage may state gain in decibels, loading in ohms, or capacitance in picofarads; those values have to be interpreted using the cartridge maker’s data and the stage maker’s instructions. If either document is missing, choose a better-documented alternative or ask the manufacturer for confirmation.
Connection procedure
- Turn off the amplifier. Lower the volume before handling the turntable leads.
- Identify the cartridge type. Use the product record or cartridge marking to establish Nd9 MM or Ania MC.
- Place the phono stage near the amplifier. Keep the signal cables secure and avoid placing the stage where its controls can be accidentally changed.
- Connect the tonearm leads to the stage’s input. Match left and right channels and attach the ground lead if the stage provides a ground terminal.
- Select the correct input mode. Choose MM for an Nd9 or the manufacturer’s specified MC setting for an Ania. On a configurable stage, apply the published gain and loading values rather than a generic default.
- Connect the stage output to a line input. Use Aux, Line, CD, or another input that is not itself a phono input. Do not feed a phono-stage output into a second phono preamp.
- Power up and test quietly. Start at low volume, select the amplifier input, and confirm that both channels play cleanly.
- Secure the final arrangement. Once the channel balance and grounding are correct, route the cables so they cannot be pulled from the tonearm or stage.
Symptoms that indicate a mismatch or wiring problem
- Very quiet sound from an Ania: check that the stage is in MC mode and that the amplifier is connected to the stage’s line output, not to a second phono input.
- Quiet or distorted sound from an Nd9: confirm MM mode, channel connections, and that the stage output is going into a line-level input.
- One channel missing: swap left and right connections one at a time to identify whether the fault follows a cable, input socket, or channel. Keep the amplifier volume low while testing.
- Hum or buzz: verify the ground connection, keep signal cables away from power leads where practical, and check that every plug is fully seated.
- Excessive brightness or dullness after changing stages: inspect the new stage’s loading or capacitance settings and compare them with the cartridge manufacturer’s published guidance. Do not alter settings randomly.
- Feedback or a low-frequency howl: separate the turntable and speakers physically and check that the stage and amplifier are not being driven through an incorrect input path.
If the problem remains, return the system to the simplest known arrangement: cartridge into the correctly typed stage, stage into a line input, and all channel and ground connections checked individually.
Choosing for a future cartridge change
If you intend to keep the Nd9 for the foreseeable future, an MM-only stage avoids paying for controls you will not use. If you may move to an MC cartridge later, an MM/MC stage can avoid another purchase, provided its MC specifications cover the future cartridge. Cartridge changes are not interchangeable by label alone: two MC cartridges can require different gain or loading, so re-check the new cartridge’s data every time.
When changing from Nd9 to Ania, replace the MM setting with the MC setting and confirm the stage’s published requirements before playing records. When changing in the other direction, return to MM mode and verify that the amplifier input remains line level after the stage.
Budget and purchasing checks
The official product pages establish the cartridge choices and Rega’s own stage paths, but they do not establish your country, current retail prices, taxes, shipping costs, or a universally appropriate budget. Compare the complete cost of the stage, required cables, and any regional power-supply version rather than relying on a headline price. A lower-priced unit is not a saving if it lacks the required MC range, ground connection, or return protection.

Practical decision guide
Choose the Fono MM MK5 path when
- Your Planar 6 RS has the factory Nd9 or another cartridge confirmed as MM.
- Your amplifier lacks a suitable MM phono input.
- You prefer a dedicated, straightforward MM setup and do not currently need MC adjustment.
Choose the Fono MC path when
- Your deck uses the Ania MC configuration.
- You want the stage documented by Rega as part of its Ania package.
- The published settings and connections match the Ania and your amplifier’s line input.
Choose another stage when
- Your existing amplifier or receiver already provides the required input and you do not need an external unit.
- A third-party model offers specifications that explicitly match your cartridge and system connections.
- You need both MM and MC support and have verified the ranges for the cartridges you plan to use.
Frequently asked questions
What phono preamp works with the Rega Planar 6 RS?
Identify the cartridge first. The factory Nd9 configuration needs an MM input, for which Rega names the Fono MM MK5. The Ania configuration needs an MC-compatible input; Rega offers an Ania package with the Fono MC. A compatible amplifier phono input can serve instead of either external unit.
Do I need an MM or MC phono stage for the Planar 6 RS?
Use MM for the Nd9 and MC for the Ania. The turntable model alone does not answer this question because Rega sells the deck with both cartridge configurations.
Can I connect the Planar 6 RS directly to an Aux input?
Not with the raw tonearm leads. The manual requires those leads to connect to a suitable phono stage first. The stage’s line-level output can then feed Aux, Line, CD, or another ordinary amplifier input.
Can I use my amplifier’s built-in phono input?
Yes, if the amplifier documentation confirms the correct cartridge type. Check whether the input is MM, MC, or switchable. Do not assume a socket labelled Phono supports both types.
Is the Rega Fono MM MK5 compatible with the Ania?
It is identified by Rega as a dedicated MM stage, so it is the documented route for the Nd9, not the Ania MC. Use an MC-compatible stage for the Ania.
Should I buy an MM/MC stage for flexibility?
Only if its published gain and loading ranges cover the cartridges you plan to use. Flexibility can help with a future change, but it does not remove the need to configure the stage correctly for each cartridge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes the Planar 6 RS include a phono preamp?
The turntable has external phono leads and the manual instructs you to connect them to a suitable phono stage. Whether you need an additional box depends on your amplifier: a matching built-in phono input can provide that function, while a line-only amplifier requires an external stage.

What should I check if the sound is very quiet?
Verify MM mode for an Nd9 or MC mode for an Ania, then check that the stage output goes to a line input rather than a second phono input. Recheck left, right, and ground connections with the amplifier volume low.
Final checklist before you order
- Identify Nd9 MM or Ania MC from the actual cartridge fitted.
- Inspect the amplifier for a compatible MM or MC phono input.
- Decide whether an external stage is necessary.
- Match the stage’s input type, gain, and loading to the cartridge specifications.
- Confirm that the stage output feeds a line-level amplifier input.
- Check grounding, channel connectors, power supply, warranty, and return conditions.
- Save the chosen settings so they can be restored after maintenance or a cartridge change.
For the standard factory setup, the answer is concise: Nd9 means an MM stage such as Rega’s Fono MM MK5; Ania means an MC-compatible stage, with Rega’s Fono MC as the manufacturer’s bundled route. If your amplifier already has the matching phono input, use it; otherwise insert the correctly matched external stage between the Planar 6 RS and a line-level amplifier input.
Frequently Asked Questions
What phono preamp works with the Rega Planar 6 RS?
Match the stage to the cartridge: Nd9 is MM and suits an MM stage such as Rega’s Fono MM MK5; Ania is MC and suits an MC-compatible stage such as the Fono MC included in Rega’s Ania package.
Do I need an MM or MC phono stage?
Use MM for the Nd9 and MC for the Ania. Confirm the cartridge actually fitted, especially on a used deck or one with a replacement cartridge.
Can I use the amplifier’s phono input instead of buying a preamp?
Yes, when the amplifier’s input type matches the cartridge. Verify MM or MC in the amplifier manual; a Phono label alone does not guarantee both modes.
Can the Planar 6 RS connect straight to Aux or Line?
The tonearm leads must first connect to a suitable phono stage. Connect that stage’s line-level output to Aux, Line, CD, or an equivalent amplifier input.
Is the Fono MM MK5 suitable for the Ania cartridge?
Rega identifies the Fono MM MK5 as a dedicated MM stage. The Ania requires an MC-compatible stage, so use the Fono MC route or another stage whose specifications support the Ania.
What does the Nd9’s 5–6 mV output mean?
It is the nominal output listed in Rega’s Planar 6 RS User Manual. Use it as cartridge information, not as a universal gain setting; follow the cartridge and stage specifications together.
The Bottom Line
Identify the cartridge first: Nd9 requires MM, while Ania requires MC. Use a matching amplifier phono input when available; otherwise choose a correctly specified external stage, such as Rega’s Fono MM MK5 for Nd9 or Fono MC for Ania, and connect its output to a line-level input.
