Choose by matching a repeatable battery test to your workload, checking sustained performance and heat, then verifying charging standards and the exact regional model. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasted 18 hours 27 minutes and the Galaxy S26 Ultra 16 hours 40 minutes under that outlet’s test. HardwareZone Singapore’s separate 2026 test gave every compared Ultra-class Android phone at least 17 hours, with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra exceeding 20 hours. Those results use different methods, so they are evidence to interpret, not one universal leaderboard.
What “large battery and flagship performance” should mean
A large battery is useful only when it produces dependable runtime in the way you use your phone. Capacity in mAh is an electrical specification, not a promise of hours. Display brightness, refresh behavior, processor efficiency, software optimization, app activity, camera use, gaming, and mobile-network quality can all change the result. HardwareZone states: “We generally don’t take milliamp-hour (mAh) capacity numbers at face value, and newer chemical blends don’t always translate to longer uptime.”

Flagship performance also has several meanings. A phone can lead a short CPU benchmark yet throttle during a long game, while another may process photographs or on-device AI faster. Treat these as separate questions:
- Responsiveness: app launches, web browsing, multitasking, and short CPU bursts.
- Graphics: frame rates and rendering performance in games or 3D applications.
- Sustained speed: performance after 20 to 60 minutes of continuous work, when heat can reduce clock speeds.
- Specialized workloads: image processing, video export, and AI features that may favor a different chip than general CPU tests.
Begin with your actual workload
Write down what you do on a heavy day before comparing models. The right priority changes with the task.

| Primary use | Evidence to prioritize | Battery implications |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging, browsing, maps and calls | Battery test with a stated mixed workload; modem behavior in your network area | Screen brightness and weak signal can matter more than peak chip speed |
| Long gaming sessions | Sustained graphics tests, frame-rate stability and thermal measurements | High refresh rate, brightness and heat can drain the battery quickly |
| Photography and video | Camera-processing speed, storage options and sustained performance | Recording, image processing and a bright preview screen are intensive |
| AI or creative applications | Application-specific or AI benchmarks plus sustained-load testing | Repeated exports or model processing create heat and rapid drain |
| Frequent travel | Measured endurance, wired charging speed, wireless charging support and network compatibility | Roaming, poor reception and navigation can reduce runtime |
If your workload is mostly light, the phone with the fastest benchmark may not improve your day. If you play or render for hours, a short benchmark is insufficient evidence.
Use battery tests without mixing incompatible numbers
Read the test owner and workload first
Battery-test hours are meaningful only with the publisher, procedure and stopping point attached. Do not average results from different outlets or rank them as if they measured the same loop. GSMArena’s 2026 flagship guide similarly warns that flagship status alone does not guarantee long battery life.
Tom’s Guide comparison: two directly compared phones
Tom’s Guide reported these results in its 2026 iPhone 18 Pro Max versus Galaxy S26 Ultra face-off:
| Phone | Battery-test result | Benchmark leadership reported by Tom’s Guide |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | 18 hours 27 minutes (Tom’s Guide, 2026) | Led the listed Geekbench CPU and 3DMark graphics figures |
| Galaxy S26 Ultra | 16 hours 40 minutes (Tom’s Guide, 2026) | Led the cited Geekbench AI result |
Because both phones were tested by the same outlet, their two endurance figures are more useful as a head-to-head comparison than either figure is against a result from another publication. The same comparison demonstrates why “performance” cannot be reduced to one score: the leaders changed between CPU, graphics and AI categories.

HardwareZone Singapore’s Ultra-class Android test
HardwareZone Singapore reported that every model in its 2026 comparison reached at least 17 hours in its standardized test. The outlet stopped the test when a phone reached 20% remaining, and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra exceeded 20 hours. HardwareZone selected the OPPO Find X9 Ultra as its test pick and described the Xiaomi 17 Ultra as a viable alternative.
These figures cannot be directly equated with Tom’s Guide’s 18-hour-27-minute and 16-hour-40-minute results. The outlets used different procedures and stopping conditions. Use each set to compare phones inside that test, then look for a second test with a clearly described method before making a broader judgment.
Why capacity cannot settle the decision
Software optimization, screen brightness, usage intensity, installed apps and network quality all affect uptime. A newer battery chemistry or a larger stated capacity may not overcome an inefficient display setting or a weak cellular signal. Apple does not publish official iPhone battery-capacity figures according to Tom’s Guide, so an unofficial capacity number should not be presented as an Apple-confirmed specification.

Check sustained performance and heat
Separate burst speed from long-session speed
A benchmark that runs for seconds measures a burst. Gaming, 4K video work and repeated AI tasks can last much longer. During a sustained-load test, watch whether performance remains stable, whether the chassis becomes uncomfortable, and whether the software reduces brightness or frame rate to control heat.

- For gaming, look for long-session frame-rate data rather than a single peak score.
- For video work, check export times across repeated jobs and whether later runs slow down.
- For AI features, identify the exact benchmark or application; an AI score does not automatically predict CPU or graphics speed.
- For everyday use, prioritize consistent responsiveness and modem reliability over a tiny difference in a synthetic score.
Interpret the iPhone and Samsung results by category
In Tom’s Guide’s current comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max led the listed Geekbench CPU and 3DMark graphics results, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra led the cited Geekbench AI result. Select between them according to the work you actually perform, not the label “fastest.” A person who spends evenings gaming needs sustained graphics and thermal evidence; someone using AI-heavy tools should examine the relevant AI result and app support.
Treat charging as a separate purchase criterion
Runtime tells you how long a charge lasts. Charging tells you how quickly you can recover that runtime. Evaluate both wired and wireless options, because a phone that lasts slightly longer may still be less convenient if it recharges slowly or requires a charger you do not own.
What the current head-to-head test found
Tom’s Guide recorded 60W wired charging for both the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra. After 30 minutes, its test showed the iPhone at 80% and the Galaxy at 77%. These are that source’s measurements, not a guarantee for every charger, cable, software version or regional variant.

Verify the charging setup in your market
- Confirm the exact wired-power rating for the model number sold in your country.
- Check whether a compatible charger is included; if not, budget for one that supports the phone’s negotiated standard.
- Verify wireless charging technology and the required accessory, especially if you rely on a car or desk charger.
- Check regional electrical and network variants before importing a phone.
Tom’s Guide says its process times battery drain and checks charge percentage after 15 and 30 minutes. When a phone does not include a charger, it uses one capable of the phone’s rated maximum supported speed. That setup explains the test context; it does not promise the same result with an arbitrary charger.

How the current examples fit different buyers
| Model | Published evidence | Potential fit | What remains to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | 18h 27m in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test; led that comparison’s listed Geekbench CPU and 3DMark graphics figures; 80% after 30 minutes in its charging test | Users who want the strongest result in that head-to-head endurance and CPU/graphics set, and who use the iOS ecosystem | Local price, stock, warranty, support period, charger availability and carrier compatibility |
| Galaxy S26 Ultra | 16h 40m in the same Tom’s Guide test; led the cited Geekbench AI result; 77% after 30 minutes in that charging test | Users whose priority is the tested AI result or Samsung’s software and accessory ecosystem | Regional charging specification, included charger, price, stock, warranty, support and carrier bands |
| Xiaomi 17 Ultra | More than 20 hours in HardwareZone Singapore’s 2026 test, which stopped at 20% remaining | Users seeking the longest result within that HardwareZone comparison | How its local variant, network bands, software and charger differ from the tested unit |
| OPPO Find X9 Ultra | HardwareZone Singapore selected it as its pick in the 2026 Ultra-class comparison | Users who value that outlet’s overall choice rather than treating endurance as the only criterion | The outlet’s exact regional configuration, current availability, price, support and charging package |
No table row is a universal winner. The first two results come from Tom’s Guide; the latter two come from HardwareZone Singapore’s different test. Confirm local details before paying, because current prices, inventory, warranty terms and support periods were not established for every market.
Account for screen, size, software and network conditions
A very large display can make reading and gaming easier while consuming more power at high brightness. Weight and dimensions determine whether you can comfortably carry the phone, use it one-handed or mount it in a car. Decide whether that trade-off is worthwhile before treating a larger battery as an automatic advantage.
Software ecosystem is equally practical. Your existing apps, cloud services, wearables, payment tools and computer integration may make one operating system less disruptive. Network conditions matter as well: a phone searching for a weak signal can use more energy than the same model on a strong connection. When reading a battery review, note whether its workload and network setup resemble yours.

- Record the full model and region. Use the manufacturer’s model number, not only the family name. Storage, modem, charging and regulatory variants can differ.
- Check carrier compatibility. Confirm the bands and calling features used by your carrier, including any requirements for 5G, VoLTE or emergency calling.
- Confirm charging hardware. Read the local box contents and supported wired and wireless standards. Do not assume the charger shown in a review is included in your market.
- Check software support. Find the support-period terms for the exact region and confirm that your essential applications work on the operating system.
- Compare the complete cost. Include a compatible charger, case, wireless accessory and any import or warranty expense rather than comparing handset prices alone.
- Confirm seller and warranty. Verify stock, return rights, repair coverage and whether service is provided locally or only through an importer.
- Recheck immediately before purchase. Prices, availability and carrier offers change; a review’s test date does not establish today’s deal.
Use a repeatable scorecard instead of a single winner
The following weighting is a practical starting point, not a laboratory standard. Change it to match your workload and score each candidate only with like-for-like evidence.

| Category | Suggested weight | How to score it |
|---|---|---|
| Endurance | 30% | Use a same-publisher battery test with a stated workload and stopping point |
| Sustained performance and thermals | 25% | Prefer long-load gaming, graphics or creative tests over burst benchmarks |
| Charging convenience | 15% | Combine tested wired recovery, wireless support and charger availability |
| Workload-specific performance | 15% | Use CPU, graphics, camera or AI evidence that matches your tasks |
| Daily fit | 10% | Consider size, weight, display behavior, software and network reliability |
| Purchase certainty | 5% | Verify local model, price, stock, warranty and carrier compatibility |
Mark a category “unknown” when no comparable evidence exists instead of guessing. A phone with a spectacular endurance number but no local warranty or incompatible network may be a worse purchase than a slightly slower model you can reliably service.
Diagnose disappointing battery life after purchase
If your new flagship falls short of a published result, first compare conditions rather than assuming the battery is defective.
- Screen drain: reduce unnecessary brightness and check whether a high-refresh setting is active continuously.
- Network drain: compare battery use in a strong-signal location. Poor reception can force the modem to work harder.
- App activity: inspect battery statistics for background apps, navigation, social feeds, video and games.
- Workload mismatch: a review’s mixed test may not resemble hours of gaming, camera recording or hotspot use.
- Charging mismatch: verify the cable, charger and negotiated wattage before concluding that fast charging is malfunctioning.
- Thermal behavior: if sustained tasks slow down, note ambient temperature, case use and whether the software lowered performance to control heat.
These checks cannot turn one outlet’s result into a guarantee. They help explain why two owners of the same model can report different runtime.

Bottom-line decision rule
Choose the phone that wins your workload, not the one that wins a headline specification. Start with a same-publisher endurance comparison, then require sustained-load evidence for gaming or creative work. Treat charging speed, charger inclusion and wireless support as separate checks. Finally, verify the exact regional model, network compatibility, support and total cost. On the evidence available here, Tom’s Guide gives the iPhone 18 Pro Max the longer result in its direct comparison, while HardwareZone Singapore reports more than 20 hours for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra in a different test; neither finding is a universal ranking across all phones or markets.
