Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A carrier-discounted phone is usually not free in the way a store giveaway is free. The discount commonly arrives as monthly bill credits tied to a device-financing agreement and a qualifying wireless plan. If you cancel the line, switch to an ineligible plan, pay off the phone early, or upgrade before the promotion ends, you may lose future credits while still owing the remaining device balance. Before accepting any offer, compare the complete cost of the required plan and phone against buying an unlocked phone and choosing service separately.
What a “free” or discounted phone offer actually includes
Most carrier promotions combine two separate contracts: a device installment agreement and a wireless-service plan. You finance the phone over a set term, then receive a promotional credit on each monthly bill. The credit may offset some or all of the installment payment, but it normally continues only while every promotion condition is met.

The Federal Communications Commission documented historical examples of 24- and 36-month credit schedules. In August 2022, published examples included up to $700 off an iPhone 13 through 36 monthly credits, up to $800 through 36 monthly credits, and up to $800 through 24 monthly credits that required adding a line and selecting a specified plan. Those figures are historical examples, not current prices or a prediction of what a carrier offers today (Federal Communications Commission, FCC 22-103, 2022).

Calculate the total cost over the period you expect to keep the line
Compare offers over the same time horizon, such as the 24 or 36 months used by the promotion, or the shorter period you realistically expect to remain with the carrier. Include both phone and service costs. A low device payment can be outweighed by an expensive required plan.
Use a complete cost formula
For the carrier offer, add the down payment, all device installment payments, taxes and fees, activation or connection charges, and the price of the required service plan. Subtract only the promotional credits you expect to receive during the comparison period. If you may leave early, calculate a second total that includes the remaining device balance and removes credits that would be forfeited.
For an unlocked-phone alternative, add the phone purchase price, taxes and fees, and the independent service plan over the same period. Include any trade-in value you could obtain without joining the promotion. The useful comparison is not “free phone versus expensive phone”; it is the total amount paid for equivalent service and hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Input | Carrier promotion | Unlocked-phone option |
|---|---|---|
| Phone price before discount | Enter the advertised retail price. | Enter the exact model’s purchase price. |
| Down payment | Enter the amount due at purchase. | Enter the amount paid upfront. |
| Installments | Monthly payment multiplied by the number of months. | Usually zero if purchased outright; include financing if used. |
| Credits | Monthly credit multiplied by the months you will remain eligible. | Usually none. |
| Service plan | Required plan price multiplied by the same number of months. | Chosen plan price multiplied by the same number of months. |
| Taxes and fees | Use the carrier’s written estimate and timing. | Use the seller and provider’s written amounts. |
| Activation or connection | Include any one-time charge. | Include any applicable service activation charge. |
| Trade-in value | Subtract only after confirming eligibility and condition rules. | Subtract the value available outside the promotion. |
Do not treat a trade-in as a guaranteed discount until the carrier confirms the device model, condition, inspection result, and deadline. Also compare what the same device could earn if sold or traded in independently.
Test the early-exit case
Run the calculation at the month you might realistically leave, not only at the final credit month. A promotion can look inexpensive at month 36 and expensive at month 12 because the remaining device balance may still be payable while future credits disappear. Check whether the carrier requires the phone to be paid off before an unlock or before moving the device to another provider.

Check the qualifying plan, not just the phone headline
The required service plan is often the largest hidden cost. Compare its regular price with the cheaper plan you would otherwise select, including taxes, regulatory fees, line-access charges, and any connection fee. Confirm whether the advertised price assumes AutoPay, paperless billing, a specific account type, a new line, or multiple lines.
Compare features you will actually use
- Data allowance and the point at which speeds may be reduced.
- Hotspot or tethering limits.
- International calling, texting, roaming, or travel passes.
- Video-streaming quality and other included services.
- Multi-line pricing if you are adding family members.
- Coverage at home, work, school, and regular travel locations.
A plan that costs more but includes features you already pay for elsewhere may be competitive. Conversely, paying for benefits you never use can erase the phone discount.

Ask whether the plan can change later
Get a written list of plans that remain eligible. “Any unlimited plan” or “eligible postpaid service” can exclude lower-priced tiers. Ask whether a future price change, line removal, account conversion, or loss of AutoPay ends the credits. The answer should identify the exact plan names or eligibility rules, not just a marketing label.
Events that can stop credits or leave a balance
Promotional credits are conditional. The following events commonly affect them, but the exact rule is offer-specific:
| Change | Possible result | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Cancel the promoted line | Future credits stop; the remaining device balance may become due. | Whether cancellation immediately accelerates the balance and whether any grace period exists. |
| Move to an ineligible plan | Credits stop even though service continues. | Which lower-cost plans, if any, preserve the promotion. |
| Pay off the device early | Future credits may stop. | Whether the offer permits early payoff without forfeiting credits. |
| Upgrade early | Credits may end or the device may need to be returned or paid off. | How an early-upgrade program interacts with the specific promotion. |
| Fail a trade-in condition | The expected credit may be reduced or denied. | Inspection standards, deadlines, and what happens if the device is rejected. |
| Remove a required line | An offer requiring a new or additional line may terminate. | Whether the line must remain active for the entire credit term. |
The installment agreement and service plan are separate obligations. Losing a credit does not normally erase the device debt. Keep the signed device agreement so you can see the payoff rules instead of relying on a verbal explanation.

What current carrier terms illustrate
Carrier rules change frequently by device, plan, account type, trade-in, state, and date. Use these examples to identify questions, not to assume that every promotion has the same terms.
Verizon
Verizon’s support FAQ says monthly promotional credits can stop when a customer cancels the promoted line, pays the device agreement early, upgrades early, or changes to an ineligible plan. It also explains that a discount can end before all scheduled credits are received. Ask for the exact credit schedule and the payoff amount at each point in the term.
AT&T
AT&T offer examples require eligible postpaid service and state that taxes and fees apply. Credits are applied over an installment term. The offer language warns that canceling service can stop credits and make the remaining device balance payable; early payoff or an early upgrade may also end credits. These are offer-specific terms and should not be generalized to every AT&T promotion.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile examples show qualifying-plan price thresholds, AutoPay conditions, taxes and fees, a device connection charge, and trade-in requirements for some deals. Credits are monthly, and cancellation or early payoff can stop credits or make the remaining financed balance due. T-Mobile’s promotion FAQ says service is generally required for promotional pricing and directs customers to each offer’s eligibility rules.
Because these conditions and prices are volatile, save a copy of the exact offer page, checkout summary, trade-in receipt, and device agreement on the day you enroll.

Trade-ins, upgrades, and payoff decisions
Trade-in requirements
A trade-in can increase the credit but adds another failure point. Confirm the eligible model, storage capacity, cosmetic and functional condition, activation-lock requirements, shipping deadline, and inspection process. Photograph the device, back up your data, remove accounts, and retain the tracking receipt. If the carrier rejects the trade-in, calculate whether the promotion still works without the expected credit.
Paying off early
Early payoff is not automatically a money-saving move. If the carrier stops promotional credits after payoff, paying the balance early converts a subsidized installment into a larger immediate expense and forfeits future credits. Obtain a payoff quote and a written statement of whether credits continue before making the payment.
Upgrading before the term ends
An early upgrade may require returning the phone, paying its remaining balance, or surrendering future credits. Compare the value of keeping the current phone until the credit term ends with the total cost of the new upgrade. Do not assume that an “upgrade eligible” message preserves the original promotion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the offer with an unlocked phone
Buying an unlocked phone separately can cost more upfront but preserves the ability to choose among compatible providers. The FCC has described unlocking as giving consumers greater freedom and flexibility when changing between compatible wireless service providers. That flexibility has a financial value if you expect to switch plans, move, or respond to coverage and price changes.

Compatibility is not automatic. Verify the exact phone model and hardware configuration with the network you intend to use. Check the provider’s compatibility tool, supported services, and any restrictions on devices purchased from another seller. Do not assume that an unlocked label guarantees full compatibility with every network or feature.

| Carrier-financed promotion | Unlocked purchase |
|---|---|
| Lower upfront device cost may be available. | Higher upfront payment is common. |
| Credits can reduce the installment payment. | No promotional credits, but no credit-term lock-in. |
| Changing plans or providers can forfeit credits. | Changing compatible providers is generally simpler. |
| Trade-in and plan eligibility rules apply. | Trade-in value can be obtained independently. |
| Remaining device balance may be due after an exit. | No carrier device balance if purchased outright. |
The unlocked option is especially worth modeling when the required plan costs substantially more than the plan you prefer, when you may move or change providers before the credit term ends, or when the promotion requires a trade-in you would rather sell independently.
A step-by-step process for choosing
- Define your service horizon. Write down how long you expect to keep the line and the phone. Use a shorter stress-test period if your job, address, budget, or coverage needs may change.
- Request the complete promotion terms. Obtain the device price, installment length, monthly credit, qualifying plan, trade-in rules, taxes, fees, connection charge, and cancellation, payoff, and upgrade conditions.
- Confirm eligibility before handing over a trade-in. Verify the account type, line requirement, phone model and condition, AutoPay requirement, and any plan-price threshold.
- Calculate the full carrier total. Add device payments, required service, taxes, fees, and one-time charges. Subtract only credits you expect to receive during your chosen horizon.
- Calculate the early-exit total. Use the carrier’s payoff schedule at likely exit months. Remove future credits and add any remaining balance.
- Price an unlocked alternative. Use the exact compatible model, independent trade-in value, and the service plan you would actually choose.
- Compare service value. Check coverage and the features that matter to you, not only the advertised monthly price.
- Read the final checkout documents. Make sure the device agreement and service order match the promotion. Save copies and receipts.
- Choose based on your likely behavior. Take the carrier deal when you are comfortable keeping the required plan and line for the full credit term. Choose independent hardware when flexibility or a cheaper plan is more valuable.
Illustrative break-even example
Consider a hypothetical $900 phone financed for 36 months with a $25 monthly credit. If the required plan costs $75 per month and the plan you would otherwise choose costs $50, the plan premium is $25 per month. Over 36 months, that premium is $900, exactly equal to the maximum device credit, before taxes and fees. In that illustration, the “free” phone does not create a saving against the cheaper plan; it exchanges a device discount for a more expensive service commitment.
If you leave after 18 months, you would have received $450 of credits in the illustration. The device could still have about $450 of scheduled installments remaining, while the remaining $450 of credits would be forfeited under terms that stop credits after cancellation. The actual result depends on the agreement, but this is why the early-exit calculation matters.
Final checklist before you accept
- Do I have the written promotion and device agreement?
- What is the exact qualifying plan and its price after taxes, fees, and AutoPay assumptions?
- How long do credits last, and when does the first credit appear?
- What happens if I cancel, change plans, pay off the phone, or upgrade early?
- What device balance remains at months 6, 12, and 24?
- Is a trade-in required, and what condition and deadline apply?
- What upfront taxes, activation or connection charges, and other fees are due?
- Would an unlocked phone plus my preferred plan cost less over the same period?
- Is the exact unlocked model compatible with the network I may use?
- Does the plan provide the coverage and features I need at all regular locations?
The right decision is the one that remains affordable if your circumstances change. Treat the phone credit as conditional, price the service plan as part of the phone’s cost, and keep an unlocked alternative in the comparison.
